Title: Silver Age Superhero RTD
Post by: The_Two_Eternities on July 20, 2019, 06:10:02 pm
Comic books were a pretty crazy place back in the day. A paragon of truth and justice would have an entire story devoted to meeting a monkey wearing the same costume, or playing amateur baseball, or even taking over the world, none of which are really superheroic activities. And it all goes back to normal by the next issue. Sounds kind of like an RTD, doesn’t it?

Spoiler: Mechanics (click to show/hide)

But before monkeys, or baseball, or world domination, each superhero has to have an origin story. No superhero starts out as an established force, and few games work well without a little testing of the mechanics.

Ah, whoops. It seems there's been a misunderstanding @Dustan @Shadowclaw @Fallacy. Skills are mundane things like "Detective Work" or "Brawling". The Catalyst section describes what your powers are. The Magnitude stat represents how strong they are. The Precision stat represents how much control you have over them.

Ah, I’ve always heard that villains are evil, though good and evil are simply words we use to define actions, so I guess no one is specifically a hero or villain, just...neutral. There are grey zones

Yes. hence why the saying “the road to hell is paved with good intentions” exists.
you can have a villain who genuinely means well, but is using immoral or unethical means to try and achieve his goal. equally, you can have a hero who only helps because it furthers his own personal motivations, be they revenge or some other more sinister goal.

Ethan Summers, Orion Schulz, Peter Pevrett, Burt Goldstine, Dora Trisha: Your sheets look good. But a few questions about the details.

Burt: Does your power require tactile contact, or is it vision-based? Does it affect sapient beings?

Dora: How much of the reanimated being's body and mind remain intact? Do you have any control over them? Does it affect nonsapient beings?

So, would it be accurate to assume we can't be an already established hero?

That assumption would be accurate.

It’s as if they never died
I don’t have control over them
It does affect nonsapient beings

Alright, so I’m not doing Erin, because I don’t really want to have identical stats to someone else. Instead, have a magic Roman who’s pretty much a jack of all trades.

I’m not sure if this is really quite the quality that there should be in the backstory and catalyst stuff, but hopefully the idea here is clear enough.

The question was about whether it would work, not whether it should be done

The Negotiator:

Page: A man lies in bed. [This man is Ethan Summers.] Ethan sits up, [He volunteers at the fire station and hospital when he's not struggling to keep his job as a store clerk.] and heads outside to check the mail. Reading a letter as he eats breakfast, Ethan looks worried. The words "NOTICE OF FAILURE TO PAY INSTALLMENT" are visible at the top of the letter.
Page: Ethan gets into his car and begins driving. (Driving (Wits) check: 3+1(close) = 4, 3+0 = 3) Ethan parks his car by the side of a building, and walks into a building with a logo of three concentric red circles. [He works at Bullseye Retail, a small retail chain with a few stores scattered across about half as many counties.] He heads to a room in the back, where the managers and employees are gathered. After a few moments, the store manager speaks. Store Manager: "As you know, the results of the drug tests are coming in throughout today. We'll be pulling employees aside to inform them of the results and administer disciplinary action if necessary. I’m sorry that the tests were mandatory and on such short notice, but with the ongoing wave of drug abuse in this area it was a necessity."
Page: Several panels of Ethan working, with a clock in the background ticking forward from 9:00 to 10:00 to 11:00. A panel of Ethan eating lunch. As Ethan is finishing his lunch, the shift manager looms over him. [The people who evaluate drug tests are, sadly, not all paragons of moral righteousness.] Shift Manager: “Ethan, the drug test came back positive. You’re fired.” [Not knowing that Ethan’s name had been picked at random to swap with the name of an employee who knew he would test positive, the manager’s reaction was perfectly understandable.]

What does Ethan say or do in response?

Anathema:

Page: A small group of tourists are milling around while a man in a pith helmet stands in front of an entrance to a pyramid. Pith Helmet Man: “Alright, everyone, it’s safe to enter now.” [Hard to tell who you should be looking at, isn’t it?] The tourists look apprehensive. The man in the pith helmet quickly backpedals verbally. Pith Helmet Man: “Safe for the archeologists and artifacts, that is! Wouldn’t want any tourists going past the caution tape into the unexplored areas of this newly-discovered pyramid!...” [Well, pay attention to Orion Schulz. He’s the tall one in the back.]
Page: The group is heading down a wide stone hallway of the pyramid. A panel showing the man in the pith helmet and a few tourists. Pith Helmet Man: “Now, as I’m sure most of you know, the pyramids were built by the Ancient Egyptians.” [Orion is an anthropology student. Needless to say, he knows this already.] A panel showing an annoyed Orion, a few tourists, and a cut-off word balloon from the man in the pith helmet, who is at the front of the group. [Orion doesn’t look happy about how the tour guide’s dumbing it down. He came here to learn new stuff, not hear the absolute basics.]

What’s Orion going to do?

Contingent:

Page: A splash panel of a Titan Industries building in the early morning. [Titan Industries. Founded in 1971, it is one of the largest companies in the world, based on reverse-engineering metahuman-created technology.] A line of people in lab coats are streaming through a security checkpoint into the lobby.
Page: A panel showing the lobby. A panel zooming in on one man in particular. [This man is Peter Pevrett. He’s been working at Titan Industries for a few years now.] Several panels of Peter walking through the building. He opens a door, and heads into a laboratory with several scientists inside. [He was just placed in charge of a team researching a nanogoo sample with unknown behavior.] Peter picks a white hazmat suit off the wall and puts it on. (Wits check: 4+0 = 4) He suddenly looks down at the suit, alarmed. A panel showing the hand of the suit, with a square hole visible on one of the fingertips. Peter takes the suit off, scribbles a quick notice that the suit had a hole on a sticky note that was then stuck to the suit, and puts a different suit on. [Unfortunately, Peter didn’t think to check the new suit for holes, believing the problem to be simple wear and tear.]
Page: Splash panel of a glass enclosure. Inside are Peter, another a hazmat suit-wearing scientist and a pedestal with a purple blob on it. [He was deemed experienced enough to head the team, but not trusted enough to know where it came from.] Scientist: “So what tests do we have planned today?”

What’s Peter’s plan to investigate the nanogoo?

Dr. Mutagen:

Page: The inside of a laboratory, with assorted occupied animal cages and a man bustling about. [Dr. Burt Goldstine always wanted to know how animals worked, deep down.] Several panels of Burt running experiments on a tray of samples. [He learned much in the process of getting his PhD. in genetic engineering, but it wasn’t enough for him.] A panel of Burt turning his head to look at a large piece of scientific machinery on the other side of the lab. An extension cord is visible in the corner of the panel. [He would end up learning more than he expected, on one fateful day.]

What specific thing is Burt researching, and what’s the machine he’s about to take the tray of samples to?

The Lifebringer:

Page: A splash panel of a woman holding a lantern in a graveyard at night. [Dora Trisha works the night watch in a cemetery, making sure that any graverobbers or necromancers are reported to city law enforcement.]
Page: Several panels of Dora walking around. (Wits check: 3+1(obvious) = 4) A panel of Dora turning her head to the side to see a purple light on the ground near one of the graves.

How’s Dora going to respond to this phenomenon?

Traveler:

Page: Several panels of a man running through dark rooms gradually becoming more well-lit. Some are bedrooms, some kitchens, some living rooms, but none of them have doors or windows, only doorframes. [Followers of the Infinity Mansion series will know who this man is.] [For everyone else: He is Octavian Grey, an Ancient Roman noble once trapped inside a constantly-shifting mansion.] [Now, he is still trapped inside a mansion, but instead of running from animated suits of armor, he is running from a black goo that devours all in its path.] [The mansion hasn’t dealt with that very well.] [But as Octavian is about to find out, it’s still got a few surprises.] Octavian runs into a room, and stops abruptly. The room is small, well-lit, unadorned, and has exactly one doorframe on the opposite side... with a door in it, just barely open. Octavian glances back nervously, pushes the door open, and rushes through.
Page: A splash panel showing Octavian next to a door in the middle of a field of grain at sunrise.
Page: Octavian slams the door shut. A panel showing the hinges rip out of the doorframe. Several panels showing the door fall backward onto the ground as Octavian watches, with the sunrise visible behind him.

What will Octavian do with his newfound freedom?

The Man of Stone:

Page: Splash panel of a caveman village. A caveman wearing a red-and-blue-dyed animal skin is standing on top of a rock, making a speech to a crowd of other cavepeople.
Page: Zoom in on the caveman and the rock. Caveman: “That conclude Thrak’s talk about why Freedom and Justice are what the chiefs ought support.” A panel showing the crowd’s reaction: A mix between angry hecklers and silent, fearful faces. A group of cavemen armed with clubs push their way through the crowd. Member of the group: “Club Council say this is last drinking tube! You big bad so we sacrifice you to water dinosaurs!”

What Thrak do?

Cuddle Team Leader:

Page: Several panels of a woman rushing through the hallways of a laboratory building. [This woman is Sofia Ramirez, and she is late for Research Intern Orientation.] (Physique check: 4-1(late) = 3) Sofia pushes a door open and enters an auditorium. The speaker on the stage is clearly several minutes into the talk. [She works at Vindertech, a company that employs metahuman technologists who want to make money instead of change the world.] She sits down. (Wits check: 3-1(late) = 2) Several panels of Sofia looking bored, with a few cut-off word balloons about safety. The lecture ends, and the interns start scurrying off to their assigned laboratories, Sofia among them. When she arrives, she is met by a man in a lab coat with several other researchers visible in the background. Lab Coat Man: “Ah, you must be Miss Ramirez. This way to the large-scale mass-energy equivalence field projector.”
Page: A splash panel of a cubical device the size of a room. Lab Coat Man: “We won’t be using this for a while, since there’s no need for it, but it was fun to build.”
Page: Several panels of Lab Coat Man and Sofia looking at each other. Lab Coat Man: “It’s not even big enough to fit a human inside, too! With current technology, the necessary thickness is proportional to the square of the size. The proof-of-concept was the size of a marble and had walls as thick as a soap bubble!” Sofia: “Then why is this the first thing I’m being introduced to?” Lab Coat Man: “I said “With current technology”, didn’t I? You’ll be acting as my assistant while I work on improving the containment field.” Several panels showing Sofia carrying assorted gadgets around, as a clock in the background ticks forward. A panel showing Lab Coat Man look up. Lab Coat Man: “It’s time for the lunch break! Now, I’ll just work here a few more minutes, but you can go have lunch, there’s food in the fridge over there.” A panel showing Lab Coat Man gesture vaguely to one side, without looking up from his workbench. A panel showing Sofia look at a metallic, industrial-looking refrigerator with confusion. Sofia: (That doesn’t look like any fridge I’ve ever seen…) A panel showing Sofia walk over to it while shrugging. Sofia: (Must be part of the Vindertech aesthetic or something.)

What’s Sofia hoping will be inside?

The Stranger:

Page: An unkempt man lying in an alley next to a cardboard box. He stands up, brushes himself off, and walks out of the alley. Unkempt Man: “... can’t keep living on that sort of jobs … need to find something steady …”
Page: (Street Smarts (Wits) check: 4+0 = 4, 3+0 = 3) Glancing out of the corner of his eye, he looks slightly alarmed. He ducks back into another alley, heads out the other side, and starts walking towards the small business district of the city.

What kind of job is the unkempt man looking for?

Ringer:

Page: Several panels of a blurry ceiling slowly getting less blurry. A speech balloon reads “And Maxwell is the winner!”, with several speech balloons filled with cheering. A panel showing a bleeding man lying on the floor with a confused expression on his face. [This man is an amnesiac, a word which here means “Someone who has lost all memories about themself.”] Amnesiac Man: “Who… whuh?”
Page: The amnesiac man sits up, and the cheering speech balloons cut off. A panel showing the scene: A dimly lit wrestling arena-like setup, with the amnesiac man in the middle, a blond man wearing only red shorts off to one side, and about a dozen shadowed figures outside of the arena. The blond man throws a twisting punch in the amnesiac man’s general direction, and a ball of fire flies from his fist straight at the amnesiac man. (Physique check: 5-1(surprise) = 4) The amnesiac man scrambles out of the way and then stands up.

What are the amnesiac man’s plans for survival?

The Negotiator:

Page: A panel of Ethan staring in shock at his manager. Ethan: “That’s impossible… I’ve never done drugs in my entire life, there must be an error! Can’t you double check the results, or send me in for another test?” (Wits check: 3-1(doubt) = 2) A panel of the shift manager looking at Ethan, exasperated. Shift Manager: “The testers are booked through the next month, and I’m not inclined to doubt their results.” Ethan: (How could the test have came back positive? Could someone have wanted me fired to give someone else my position?) (Wits check: 5-2(little data)+1(narrow question) = 4) A close-up panel of Ethan’s shocked face. Ethan: (No, that doesn’t make sense. I’ve only been working here for a few months, and I remember overhearing the store manager say that they needed more entry-level workers, so that doesn’t seem like the reason.) A panel of the shift manager looking at Ethan, annoyed. Shift Manager: “Are you going to leave now?”

Will Ethan keep trying to make the shift manager see reason?

The Stranger:

Page: A panel of the unkempt man wandering through the small business district. (Wits check: 3+0 = 3) A panel of him standing next to a storefront. A panel zooming in on the storefront showing a sign reading “Genescent Postproduction Services” in flowing letters, and below that, a sign reading “Help Wanted”.

Is this a satisfactory opportunity?

The Lifebringer:

Page: A panel of Dora walking towards the light. (Wits check: 4+0) Dora: (It’s coming from one of the tombstones, like something’s hidden behind it…) A large panel of Dora looking at a tombstone glowing an unearthly purple. Dora: (No.. the tombstone itself is glowing!)

What does Dora do?

Dr. Mutagen:

Page: A panel of Burt picking up the tray. [He was researching the possibility of using genetic engineering on an egg cell to partially determine the appearance of an animal.] A panel of Burt walking across the room. An extension cord is visible just in front of him. [He would soon be able to do much more than that.] (Physique check: 2-1(distracted)+1(easy) = 2) A panel showing the exact moment that Burt tripped over the extension cord. A panel showing Burt falling to the ground, the tray of samples still in his hands. A panel showing the samples shatter. A panel showing the outside of the laboratory. Burt: “AIEEEEEEEE!”
Page: A panel showing Burt sit up groggily. A panel showing Burt open a box on the wall labelled “First Aid”. A panel showing Burt driving. A panel showing Burt collapsed on a bed.

When Burt returns to his laboratory, what does he do?

The Traveler:

Page: A panel showing Octavian crying tears of joy. Octavian: (The sunset… so beautiful…) [It was sunrise.] A panel showing Octavian’s knees buckle. Octavian: (No, wait… sunrise!) A panel showing Octavian collapsed on the ground, eyes closed and a smile on his face.

Okay, when Octavian wakes up, then what will he do with his newfound freedom?

Anathema:

Page: A panel showing Orion scowling. A panel showing Orion walking up to the head of the group. A panel showing Orion looking at the man in the pith helmet. Orion: “Hey, I’m going back to take a smoke break.” (Wits check: 5-1(hard)+1(distracted) = 5) Pith Helmet Man: “Wha? Yeah, sure, whatever.” A panel showing Orion walking away from the group, smiling.

Anything in particular that Orion’s interested in?

Cuddle Team Leader:

Page: A panel showing Sofia tug on the refrigerator’s handle. A panel showing Sofia look in confusion at the unopened door. A panel showing Sofia tug and turn the refrigerator’s handle. Sofia: (Okay, this is a really weird fridge.) A panel showing the refrigerator’s contents: several dozen unmarked metallic containers of various shapes and sizes. A panel showing Sofia grabbing a soda can-sized cylindrical container. Sofia: (This is soda, right? This had better be soda.) [It was not soda.] A panel showing Sofia fiddling with the top of the canister. Sofia: (There, got it!) A panel showing Sofia raising the canister to her mouth. A panel showing Sofia drinking the canister. Sofia: (Hey, this actually tastes really good! And fizzy! Guess it is soda.)
Page: A splash panel showing the man in the lab coat standing awkwardly with his hands in his pockets. In the foreground is a surprised Sofia, and in the background is a perfectly normal fridge. Lab Coat Man: “The fridge that stores food is on the other side of the room.”

Oops?

Contingent:

Page: A panel showing the nanoblob being placed on a very fancy scale by a long pair of tongs. Scientist: “Density is about 930 kg/m3.” A panel showing one of the scientists manning a complicated-looking piece of machinery. Scientist: “The sample we took self-destructed when it got separated from the main blob, but joke’s on it: We analyzed the scraps and determined it’s made out of mostly carbon with some silicon.” A panel showing the nanoblob inside a microwave-like device. Scientist: “When we cooled it slightly, it heated itself back up, and when we heated it slightly, it started slowly falling apart, which is poor performance even for nanobots, which aren’t exactly heat-resistant at the best of times.” A panel showing a scientist looking at Peter. “We’re waiting for your ideas on further tests, since this thing hasn’t “gone crazy” like some other nanogoo samples.”

Ideas for further testing?

The Man of Stone:

Page: A panel showing Thrak looking at the approaching club-armed cavemen. Thrak: “You no need do this! You have Freedom of Choose!” (Wits check: 4-2(hard) = 2) A panel showing one of the cavemen looking angrily at Thrak. Caveman: “Freedom of Choose ought be used for good, not bad! Disobey chiefs is bad!” A panel showing the cavemen almost at the rock.

Do Thrak think something wrong with caveman logic?

Ringer:

Page: A panel showing the amnesiac man running away from the blond man. A panel showing the blond man standing in place and launching another fire-punch. (Physique check: 4+0 = 4) A panel showing the amnesiac man dodging it. A panel showing the blond man running after the amnesiac man. (Physique check: 4+0 = 4) A panel showing the amnesiac man running in the foreground and the blond man running while launching a fire-punch in the background. (Physique check: 4+0 = 4) A panel showing the amnesiac man dodging it. (Physique check: 4+0 = 4) A panel showing the amnesiac man running in the foreground and the blond man running while launching a fire-punch in the background. (Physique check: 5+0 = 5) A panel showing the amnesiac man dodging it. Amnesiac Man: (Wait… I know how to do that punch! I don’t know how, but that sounds like a question for later.)

What are the amnesiac man’s plans for survival?

”Fine. do what you will, but believe me when I say that there is something fishy going on, and that I have been clean my entire life.
Something is wrong with those results, maybe a mislabeling, maybe something far more malicious. Do me a favor, and Do a surprise test next month or the month after.
I’d bet my job someone else comes up positive, but you already took it from me. Best of luck to you, sir.”

I’m not going to press the point regarding my job. if they wanna fire me, so be it. but there is something fishy going on, and I should at least try to talk them into doing another test to confirm it.
Afterwards, head home and start searching for a new Job. maybe i’ll find something in a less drug-ridden part of town.

Explore the tombs of the ancient pyramids, anything about ancient civilizations culture/symbology that looks interesting that Orion can take a quick pic on his phone while trying to get as many picture as possible, while exploring the depths Orion whistle a chill tune.

"So much time and effort wasted because I didn't take a few second to make sure I wouldn't trip on this stupid cord, but its to late to get upset about it now."
First he'd have to clean up all the broken glass, ruined samples, and probably some blood, then make sure he didn't contaminate anything around the area of the accident and make sure he wouldn't trip on the cord again, after all that was done he'd need to go check on the lab animals.

(Sorry, I’m in probably too many games right now).

Upon awakening, it took Octavian a moment to regain his bearings again. The first thing he needed to do, of course, was figure out if this world really was a world, and not just another room - albeit a large one - of the demented Mansion.

After that was to find a library and learn what he could.

See how the nanogoo reacts to proximity to life: specifically a common lab rat.

The Negotiator:

Page: Several panels of Ethan looking at his shift manager. Ethan: “Fine. Do what you will, but believe me when I say that there is something fishy going on, and that I have been clean my entire life.” Ethan: “Something is wrong with those results, maybe a mislabelling, maybe something far more malicious. Do me a favor, and do a surprise test next month or the month after.” Ethan: “I’d bet my job someone else comes up positive, but you already took it from me. Best of luck to you, sir.” (Wits check: 4-1(doubt) = 3) A panel of the shift manager looking contemplative. Shift Manager: “Maybe in two months, if the drug wave hasn’t stopped by then.”
Page: A panel of Ethan walking out of Bullseye. A panel of Ethan driving. A panel of Ethan looking at a newspaper. (Wits check: 5+1(easy) = 6) The headline “Emergency Services Expanding” is visible. Ethan: (Hmm. Another store clerk opening, and an opening at someplace called Vernon’s Tile and Terrace, but nothing much else.)

Are either of those good enough for Ethan?

The Stranger:

Page: A panel of the unkempt man entering the store. A panel of a man with a goatee looking up from a counter. Unkempt Man: “I saw that you had a Help Wanted sign and I was wondering if I could get a job here.” (Wits check: 3-1(appearance)+2(easy) = 4) Goatee Man: “Of course! It’s somewhat strenuous work, but the starting salary is good. Now, let me just get the paperwork out…” A panel of the man with a goatee placing a few sheets of paper on the counter. Goatee Man: “Now, I’ll need to know a few standard pieces of information. Name, previous work experience, long-term health conditions, that sort of thing.”

What does Victor say in response?

Anathema:

Page: Several panels of Orion walking through the pyramid, taking pictures on his phone as he goes. (Resilience check: 4+0 = 4) A panel of him looking down a sloping hallway. (Wits check: 5+1(easy) = 6) Orion: (There’s something down that hallway. An artifact of Ancient Egypt. I can feel it somehow…)

What does Orion do with this new piece of knowledge?

The Lifebringer:

Page: A panel of Dora reaching her hand towards the tombstone. Dora: “Hmm. I wonder why this is glowing…” A zoomed-in panel of Dora’s fingers about to make contact. A zoomed-in panel of Dora’s fingers touching the tombstone. A zoomed-in panel of Dora’s fingers brightly glowing the same shade of purple. A zoomed in panel of Dora’s fingers returning almost to normal.
Page: ([unknown]’s Physique check: 5-2(hard) = 3) A splash panel of a tanned hand punching out of a grave nearby, as Dora glances over in surprise.

Wait, what?!?

Dr. Mutagen:

Page: Several panels of Burt cleaning up the lab. A panel of Burt moving the extension cord to one side. A panel of Burt walking over to the lab animal cages. (Wits check: 4-1(hard) = 3) The lab animals look the same as always. Burt: (Something feels different about the lab animals. Maybe they’re just scared…)

What does Burt do now?

Ringer:

Page: A panel showing the amnesiac man turning around. A panel zooming in on the amnesiac man’s arm throwing a twisting punch. (Precision (Magnitude) check: 6+0, 7+0 = 6, 7) A panel showing a fireball shoot from the amnesiac man’s fist. (Blond man’s Physique check: 3-1(surprise)-1(speed)-1(accuracy) = 0) A panel showing the fireball slam into the blond man’s face, reversing his momentum and sending him crashing onto the floor.
Page: A splash panel showing a German man extending a hand towards the amnesiac man from behind. The amnesiac man is in the foreground, looking anxious. In the background are several shadowy figures. German Man: “Good show, good show! Excellent performance!”

To punch, or not to punch?

The Man of Stone:

Page: A panel showing Thrak on top of the rock as a caveman steps onto it next to him. Thrak: “They can kill me, but no can kill justice! Remember what I say! Cavepeople can be free!” (Caveman’s Wits check: 2+0 = 2) A panel showing the caveman looking angrily at Thrak. (Wits check: 4+0 = 4) A panel showing some of the cavemen in the crowd writing with lumps of coal on animal hide. A panel showing the cavemen close in on Thrak. A panel showing one place a hand over Thrak’s mouth.

It seems that the time for speeches is over. What now?

The Traveler:

Page: A panel showing Octavian open his eyes. Octavian: (Is this some form of dream, or merely another room, just unimaginable in scale?) (Wits check: 3+2(easy)) = 5) A panel showing Octavian rise to his feet. Octavian: (No. No dream is this, and never even at the height of the Mansion’s power did I encounter a room of this size.) Several panels of Octavian trudging through the field of grain. (Resilience check: 3+0 = 3) Octavian: (This farm is truly large. The master of these fields is likely a person of great import.)

What does Octavian seek, and how will he reach it?

Contingent:

Page: A panel showing Peter looking at the scientist. Peter: “Seems mostly inert, whether active or dormant I can’t say. Let’s see how it reacts to life that’s not in one of these suits. Bring in a lab rat!” A panel showing a scientist putting a bungee harness on a lab rat. A panel showing Peter, standing next to the pedestal, slowly lowering the rat onto the nanogoo using a pulley system, while scientists look on through various scopes. A zoomed-in panel showing one of the rat’s paws touch the nanogoo. A zoomed-in panel showing the nanogoo surge up around the rat, trapping it. Scientist: “Fascinating! The X-ray apparatus shows us that the rat remains unharmed; the nanogoo seems to be evaluating it in some manner.” A panel showing the rat be tossed out of the nanogoo… (Physique check: 4-1(surprise) = 3) and barely miss Peter. Peter flails around in momentary surprise… (Physique check: 4+0 = 4) but recovers his balance. In the background, one of the scientists is placing the rat in a cage. Scientist: “Well, I don’t think this rat passed the test.” Other Scientist: “Do you think the nanogoo meant to do that?”

Any other tests?

Cuddle Team Leader:

Page: A panel of Sofia staring at the man in a lab coat with a mixture of shock and anger. Sofia: “What. Did I. Just drink?” Lab Coat Man: “To use a simplified term: Pure energy.” A panel showing the man in a lab coat, slightly worried. Lab Coat Man: “Inside the mass-energy equivalence field, it behaved like a liquid, but now that you, well, drank it, there’s no telling what it’ll decay into.” A panel showing the man in a lab coat, contemplative. “Of course, “decay” might not be the right word…”

Does that answer the question?

Alright, first things first, look for a structure somewhere. Even if it's far away, it at least probably won't be wheat-colored (or green, for that matter). After that, it's just a matter of walking for a while.
Nothing particularly difficult.

"Well it ejected that rat with far more force than needed, so it can't have been accidental. And furthermore it aimed it in my direction specifically. It seems safe to say that that was on purpose. I'm thinking this nanogoo may be a symbiote or parasite type, intended to take a human host based on how it targeted me. Check the rat, it might be stuffed full of of nanogoo or something. Everyone remember your minimum distance protocols, assume this is a symbiote or parasite type until we prove otherwise."

Give the rat a more thorough examination, checking to see if there's nanogoo inside it. Ensure everyone follows the minimum safe distance protocols.

Were it possible to start either job the same day, he might have sprung for them. however, due to the nature of the employment process, it could take upwards of a week, possibly two or three before he would get the job, and another week before he got his first paycheck. he did not have a week to spare.

the other half of that problem was the drug test. Even though he knew there had to be some kind of error, anyone who checked the records would see it as a black mark, which might bar him from even a low-tier job such as the tile and terrace shop.

With a sigh of defeat, he turns the paper to the article about the emergency services expanding, and starts pondering which would be worse to him: losing his vehicle, his remaining lunch and gas money, or his house.

The Traveler:

Page: A panel of Octavian putting his hand above his eyes, squinting, with wheat stalks visible at the bottom of the panel. (Wits check: 4+0 = 4) A panel showing the roof of a barn, barely visible above densely packed stalks of corn. Octavian: (This plant is unlike any I have ever heard tell of.) A panel showing Octavian walking out of the wheat field and into the corn field. Several panels of Octavian pushing his way through the corn field. (Resilience check: 3+0 = 3) Octavian: (Though these plants stymie me, my destination is near.)

What’s Octavian’s plan for “first contact”?

Anathema:

Page: Several panels of Orion walking down the hallway, taking pictures of the walls. (Resilience check: 4+0 = 4) A panel of Orion coming to a corner, with a faint yellow light visible. A panel of Orion walking around the corner. A panel of Orion looking into a doorway. A panel of a room covered in hieroglyphics, with one pedestal in the center holding a small bronze statue of a coiled snake that glows with a faint yellow light.

What to do with the statue?

The Stranger:

Page: A panel of the unkempt man filling out the form. The word “Victor” is visible in the section marked “Name”. Victor: “Is it okay if I don’t put down a last name?” Goatee Man: “Hm? Oh, sure.” A panel of the man with a goatee looking over the form. (Wits check: 2+1(easy) = 3) Goatee Man: “Health problems… unknown?” A panel showing the man with a goatee look at Victor contemplatively. Goatee Man: “I’m sorry, but I can’t in good conscience hire you… until you’ve been checked over by a medical professional. Luckily for you, the miracles of modern medical technology made last year’s universal healthcare law possible without digging the country any deeper in debt.”

What does Victor do as a result of that conversation?

The Lifebringer:

Two hands: Better, or worse, than one?

Dr. Mutagen:

(Precision (Magnitude) check: 3+0 = 3, 6+0 = 6) A panel of the rabbit’s fur turning green. A few panels of the rabbit morphing into a rabbit-sized hamster.

Wait, what?!?

The Man of Stone:

Page: A splash panel showing Thrak fall backward as his eyes roll back into his head.
Page: A panel showing the cavemen dragging Thrak away. [The blow was powerful, but cavemen have survived worse injuries.] A panel showing the cavemen present a restrained Thrak to a shadowed figure wearing a strange headdress as firelight warms the night. A panel showing Thrak in a cage suspended over a cliff as dawn grows near. A panel showing a worried caveman slip Thrak a club through the bars of the cage. Worried Caveman: “Fight sea dinosaurs. Beat sea dinosaurs. If not, we remember you.” A panel showing the worried caveman sneak off. A panel showing a team of cavemen use a pulley system to let the cage fall into the water. A panel showing the cage slowly sinking as Thrak holds his breath. [But Thrak did not drown, and he was not eaten by sea dinosaurs. Instead, the water froze around him and he was trapped in an iceberg for thousands of years.]

What event caused Thrak’s iceberg to melt, and what does he wake up to?

Scientist: “There’s no nanogoo inside the rat, but we’ve found residue in the brain. It seems that the nanogoo probed the rat’s brain and decided, based on the results, to eject it. Which supports your theory, considering that most symbiote/parasite nanogoos only accept human hosts.”

What to try next?

Probably not that second one.” A panel showing the man in a lab coat briskly walking to another location in the laboratory, with Sofia following behind anxiously. First off, Octavian will be starting with English, since that’s what everyone else in the Mansion spoke; if he is answered in some other language, he will switch to that. Aside from that, be polite, and ask about my whereabouts in both space and time, as well as for directions to the nearest population center where I might be able to learn more.

Thrak floated around in his iceberg for countless summers, until finally being recovered by a museum for study. Thrak was then brought to the city in which our story takes place and left in a refrigerated chamber. At that point, a freak electrical accident shut down the heat pump. Thrak was freed into the modern world. But, what other strange creatures had been frozen along with him?

You can’t miss it.” A panel showing Victor leaving the building, looking back at the man with a goatee. Victor: “I’ll come back here with a doctor’s note as soon as I can.” Several panels showing Victor walking through the city. In the last panel, a street sign saying “Sherman Street” is visible. A panel showing a medium-sized hospital, about three floors. A panel showing Victor walking through a set of double doors. A panel showing a receptionist sitting behind a desk looking at Victor. Receptionist: “Do you have an appointment?”

No, but how to arrange one?

Anathema:

A panel showing Orion holding the statue in both hands. A panel showing Orion looking in slight disappointment at the statue. Orion: (Oh. I was expecting something to happen. Ah well, I’ve still got something like a month left in Egypt.)

Now that he has the statue, what will Orion do with it?

Well? Are you?

Dr. Mutagen:

What now?

The Man of Stone:

The Negotiator:

He had to run some tests to find out how much control he has over these new found powers, first he had to find out if he could actually chose what the creature would become, then find out if he had any control over what it did like could he give it orders and such, then finally see if he could handle animals with out changing them.

What does that even mean, Common Era?” A panel showing the farmer blink back to awareness. Farmer: “As I was saying, about six and a half centuries later Julius Caesar took over, and then got assassinated... I forget when. That turned the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. Four hundred years and maybe a dozen, two dozen emperors later, the Western Roman Empire got destroyed by an alliance of barbarians or something.” A panel of the farmer snapping his fingers. Farmer: “Oh, right! Sometime between Augustus’s rule and then, the Roman Empire split in half. Western, ruled from Rome, and Eastern, ruled from… some place in… you’d call it Asia Minor? And then… I think a thousand years after that, the Eastern Roman Empire turned into the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire lasted five centuries before its colonies were taken away at the end of the Great War, which was about seventy years ago. It’s called Turkey now. At least, I think that’s how it went.”

start making arrangements to have my co-workers from my most recent job as well as from the volunteer fire department come to testify, given that the main charge they have against me is for selling drugs. The big flaw in that is I rarely stop working, with the exception of sleeping.
I even do volunteer runs after my shift is done, and more than once have I slept over at the fire department after a particularly long day.It would be physically impossible for me to have time to FIND drugs to sell, let alone someone to sell them to.
That’s just one angle of the accusation that can be easily deconstructed and proven false. Two more are where the money i supposedly made from selling drugs went and the unusual drug test, which all point to this being a framing possibly to evict me from my home by preventing me from making payments to it (as if I wasn’t struggling to do that as it was.)
I’ll discuss all of that with my attorney and try to sell off my house, given there’s no way i’ll be able to afford another payment on it with all this nonsense going on.

(spoiler=Charsheet)
Name: What name does your character go by?
Alias: What name will the citizens one day cheer?
Backstory: Not the origin story, that’s something different. What life has your character led up to this point, and where are they in life now?
Catalyst: How did your character gain superpowers, and what are they? If the answer to the first question is “Intense training”, what made you go out and do your first act of heroism? If the answer to the first question is “Innate superiority of an alien species”, how did your character get to (and decide to stay on) Earth? This is what you’ll be starting out doing. Details may change depending on your actions, but the broad strokes will stay the same.

Fallacy and SM have yet to post.

As amusing as the rolls would be, I can't put that on the waitlist because it violates a part of the rules meant specifically to keep people from being too cartoonish, bouncing from terrible failure to grand success to terrible failure to grand success  again and again.

It appears this was fixed

Huh?

Orion emails his anthropology professor in the university campus about a weird relic he... acquired from a stall huckster yet doesn’t originate from any known culture, so requesting an appointment to get to the bottom of what Orion acquired. After that he makes sure his entire month trip and it’s essay report are all finalized for the anthropology finals.
“Finally that hassle of a trip is done and my report is basically completed, but that weird relic that I found is still... glowing I wonder.. why though?”

"Should have seen that coming."
Lets skip the IQ test for now, instead he'll try to figure out if it can use tools and if it can run through a maze better than a regular rabbit, then he'd try all the same experiments with a dog that he made able to walk on two legs and talk.

“did you come to cheer me up while i deal with losing my house because i can’t job-hunt while I deal with this?”
Ethan would be trying to find something to be happy about, which wasn’t forthcoming with recent developments.
