Can I drop items somewhere, like in an abandoned house and then get them back? are items not lost?
-
Once I dropped some stuff next to a river and retrieved it, so no, it shouldn't disappear.

To be safe, put them in a lair, they'll be preserved.

In addition to baddy lairs, fortresses (the size of which make it easier to sort stuff into orderly piles) count as "lairs", in that they don't scatter stuff on offload.
[edit] By "fortresses" I mean the human fortresses.

"Dropping my junk" sounds like a rap song.

If you mean dwarven (aka player-created, dwarf mode) fortress, that's wrong.
Not only stuff scatter all accross the map, but half of it disapear too...

I think he means human fortresses.
The stuff underground there (or even in their building) never scatters.
Ever.
I think.
If it does, the scatter is extremely low.

Yep, that's what I meant. And it doesn't scatter at all, ever.

Confirmed, i left my things in a house in a town, went to other town and came back, my stuff was still in the same place.
