Flip creature sprites based on the direction they're looking
« on: April 07, 2024, 12:08:16 pm »

Most of the existing creature sprites already face left by default, although a few face right so that would need to be changed.

Creature sprites should be flipped right when the creature is looking NE, E or SE.

The sprites wouldn't need to be flipped if they are looking NW, W or SW.

If they are facing N or S the sprite should be flipped right only if the last direction they looked that wasn't N or S was NE, E or SE.

I think this would help make it easier to see the direction people are facing in adventure mode without using sneak mode. It would also make it possible to see which way people are looking in fort mode.

Does facing even exist in fort mode?

They could always go whole hog and create eight sprites, one per direction. Of course, it would be lots of work, and less easy to recognize north-facing dwarves by sight. That would be less convenient since, somewhat amazingly, I have actually gotten familiar enough with each dwarf's appearance to do that routinely. Maybe the best thing would be an optional sprite overlay that indicates everyone's facing direction, like a small triangle on the sprite's border. But players would probably ask for that to be represented in ASCII mode as well.

Face direction exists in adventure mode, it's based on the last motion/attack you've done and is shown using ASCII tiles. Any visual indicator is unimplemented in premium but it's likely to be a sprite overlay like that.
