Title: Relicdips
Post by: vp on March 11, 2018, 06:13:36 am
Hi, I'm the guy who built a magma-spitting shark (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=165094.0) and a weird megakobold statue (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=169000.0).

So I started a new fort two months ago and now it's grown to a some kind of sharable condition. So I've started a new thread for the fort of Relicdips. If you read Russian you'd better read the full story in my main blog at https://vadim-proskurin.livejournal.com/tag/relicdips

My dwarves embarked in a freezing land named Full Frost, beside eternally frozen brooke named Roastedmagic:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Embark's western part belongs to a different biome named Heroic Hill:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Seven dwarves arrived. Strike the Earth!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Few weeks later surface snow got stained with something yellow:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Lower caves are beautiful:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Middle caves have very high gothic-like ceilings, more than 20 z-levels. Giant bats fly high in the caves:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Next spring all the snow has become yellow:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Kobolds arrived:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Human caravan arrived:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Wild muskoxen graze on the surface:

I'm going to obsidianize a lot so the fort needs a lot of water. Dwarves built a cistern and a whole field of wells over there:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Magma crabs infested metallurgic factory, a taylor woman killed three with bare hands. She's got a 2 months old son, his name is Kogan:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ogres spotted in lower caves:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A stupid marksdwarf spotted one through a narrow diagonal slit, jumped through, attacked an ogre and immediately got killed. RIP, stupid woman.

First invaders arrived, 3 goblins and 2 dwarves thinking that they are goblins too. It looks a bit retarded:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

They made it to the fort's entrance:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then got caught or killed by the traps.

Langur monkeys arrived, it's OK, they are totally normal arctic animals:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The construction grows:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Tavern opened and soon there are a lot of human and goblin visitors. They behave peacefully, recite poems, sing, dance, do rap with bagpipe accompanement etc:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In the temple people sing and dance for the deity of festivals:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Gorlak woman arrived, she's a poet, a normal poet girl, nothing to see here:

There are a whole lot of people in the tavern:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The fort is 4 years old:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Surface has been covered by vomit, it's easy to see favourite routes of the dwarves:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dwarves take a bath at the obsidian factory. Blood condenses on factory's walls, they are dirty as fuck:

https://i.imgur.com/fRaA82E.gifv

The fort is 5 years old:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Bartender nicknamed 'Tavern' got strange mood and created a wooden bracelet that she bestowed with her own name, it's weird as fuck:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The fort is 6 years old:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Once dwarves sat in the library and discussed reproductive behavior of creatures. Then accident happened, just like when a highlander teenage boy first time hears jokes about his mother:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

One more shitty siege happened:

https://i.imgur.com/vKwfWbC.gifv

The fort is 7 years old:

Some soldiers do some strange kung-fu:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Gremlins spotted in caves:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A teenage boy and a preteen girl killed a 1646-kg voracious cave crawler barehanded:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Human macewoman bashed to death 8 tonne bumblebee right in the air in single strike:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A giant rat somehow sneaked in fort's mines. The rat is by no means agressive, it's a pathetic frightened animal, overcome in terror almost all of the time. It hid in dark corridors for two years and then suddenly died in new unfinished trapline dedicated to make a shorter way to lower caves:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Pathetic animal entered this dead end for no reason and died horribly. I suggest it was a suicide.

Dwarves make selfies with terrified crundles:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Reachers spotted in caves. Fithy creatures. don't like them:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

All in all, dwarves take control over the caves, soldiers routed all agressive creatures, civilians gather webs and bones undisturbedly:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Eastern edge of the map has got a great gap 24 z-levels high:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It should be walled out.

Creeping eyes spotted in caves, I like them, they're cute:

Various animals rush up from the caves:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Armok Vision depicts unconscious dwarves as painted on the floor, it's hillarious:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A hungry head eating a naked woman in caves:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The woman is naked because of brief lack of clothes, she's unconscious because of many non-threatening but painful bites. On the Russian DF imageboard (http://chuck.dfwk.ru/) someone told me that it was something like this:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The fort is 9 years old:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Human mercenary Rosmic killed second forgotten beast in a row. In the last moment of battle the beast broke ger arm so she drooped her silver mace and two books that she took to read between the fights: one about rain physics and another about patient examination:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Pump stack reached the surface, it shall continue in the left foot of the statue. There are no wooden axles, only magma-safe obsidian gears, only hardcore:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Soldiers of Relicdips usually slay all wild animals cught in cages. Once they slew 10 muskoxen at once, it was too much:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A dog walked through a stokpile, stumbled, fell on the floor, broke her ass and died:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The fort is 10 years old:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Goblin mercenaries fight goblin invaders bravely:

Two squads of well-trained marksdwarves are just like a machine gun or a laser cannon:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The view of the construction from downside. There's a dwarf on top, he's for scale there:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Caravan arrived, dwarves store bought items in stockpiles. Chief medical dwarf tramples an 18-years old innocent girl:

Another caravan arrived:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dwarves elected an old hysterical goblin lady as a mayor, she's very disturbed about all the goblin and troll mutilated bodies lying near weapon traps. After one siege she killed a man when throwing tantrum. This is the last photo where she's roaming free:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then she was locked up in her own bedroom where she lives alone. Her mood changes regularly from tantrum to depression but she still lives because she doesn't need to eat and drink to survive because she's a goblin.

Dwarves started magma pumps, filled 25 z-levels of left foot and leg of the statue with magma:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I decided to try to exploit a well-known bug of levitating floodgates:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Apparently Armok Vision does not depict opened floodgates as opened, they look closed regardless of real state. Stone Sense depicts closed floodgates as walls and opened ones as floors:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dwarves dismantled all the constructions in the experimental zone, the floodgate hangs in the air:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Nine levitating floodgates look like a levitating trash container:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then dwarves hang nine limestone gem windows in the air, it looks much better:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Stone Sense shows windows very ugly:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Glass gem windows look much better than stone gem windows:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Title: Re: Relicdips
Post by: vp on March 16, 2018, 12:14:26 pm
Finally I decided to make the levitating construction out of glass windows, like this:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's time to stop experimenting and start building:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So far it's just a foundation on which the levitating windows should be installed. The foundation consists of walls and ramps needed to access the walls:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The look from beneath:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

First windows installed:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A rare shot, I managed to get a nice photo of a jabberer. Those beasts are very hard to photograph, they're too big to fit to anything. It's a mystery how they exist in narrow cave corridors:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The fort is 14 years old:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Another angle:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Down there dwarves obsidianize edges of the magma sea:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The glass construction grows:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Title: Re: Relicdips

Dwarves remove foundations from below mounted windows as soon as possible:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Do you remember 24 z-level high megahole in the eastern edge of the map? It's been walled out:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I wondered: is it possible for creatures to walk on a levitating surface? Dwarves dropped a puppy onto a flying window, unexpectedly he fell through the upper surface, now he stands on the lower surface, inside the window block:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Later dwarves built an obsidian floor nearby, the puppy made it through the sidewall and walked away.

A mercenary dwarf bit porcupine's head off just like Ozzy Osbourne did it to a pigeon:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Next experiment, a dog has been dropped onto the flying window from a higher place:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This time he stands on top of the flying construction correctly. But he still can't walk until there's a normal floor nearby.

Main glass constructions grow slow but steady:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Goblin mercenary Amak Cegadocda showed a master-class of martial arts:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

He bit a weregilamonster in the head and then hacked this head off when it was still in his mouth. He's a great warrior.

Then he attacked a herd of wild muskoxen, he's like a chainsaw, he can hack muskox's body apart with a single strike:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dwarves dropped few buckets of water over flying windows and then, when water froze, dropped a puppy over it:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then I noticed that the ice had touched a floor that dwarves built nearby during experiments. It broke levitation state of the ice and when dwarves dismantled this floor, the icy part of the construction collapsed:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So now I know how to build flying islands in Dwarf Fortress. I suppose that this fort will be the fort of flying !!science!!.

The fort is 16 years old:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Another angle:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Close view of half-contructed levitating glass leaf:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dwarves dropped a bronze colossus on the flying glass. It was a bad idea because the colossus, even being helpless, horrifies dwarves as fuck:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Soldiers had to kill the monster. Then one of the slayers said:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Two flying glass leaves completely finished:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I wondered: does living animals really have to hurt when dropped on the flying glass from high altitude? Can living animal really hurt itself striking the thing described by the game as open space?  Sadly, the answer is yes:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dwarves mount cages over flying glass leaves. Sometime somebody will pull appropriate trigger, all the prisoners will fall on the flying glass and they will become helpless living statues:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Another siege, invaders move along permafrosted brook:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dwarves continue to obsidianize magma sea edges:

Inspiring. Love the ambition of what you build, particularly build up and out with your fort rather than down. Out of interest what is your framerate like on a fort like this?

P.S. Your lava shark was astounding!

Out of interest what is your framerate like on a fort like this?

20-30 before opening gates of hell, 10-15 afterwards.

Suddenly Putin:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I found out that it's possible to pour magma into a flying glass cube:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In Armok Vision it looks like a plasma in magnetic trap, it's amazing.

Statue's walls are equipped with numerous floodgates connected to a single lever. When somebody pulls that lever, magma pours out. Dwarves performed a test:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It was a lot of magma, approximately a quarter of all surface has been flooded:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I decided to transform flying glass leaves into 3D-leaf-like tubs filled with magma. Dwarves began to build lower levels of the leaves:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dwarves opened hell, magma started to drain through grates to bottomless pits. Do you remember that adamantine beach? Now it's on the second floor:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

When magma level lowered it's been possible to widen the sink, now magma drains even faster:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Magma sea cracked apart, crabs crawl between two parts:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dwarves started to build magma feeder system for flying glass tubs:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Those tubs slowly become similar to what I want, they got walls and partially bottoms:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The fort is 24 years old:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Miners dig adamantine with stairs to avoid collapse:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Water from obsidian factory covers the bottom of drained magma sea:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Inside left leg of the statue 50 z-levels has been filled with magma:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Stone Sense depicts magma sea bottom still flooded with magma. Dwarves walk on magma just like Jesus walked on water:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I found out that paved roads can fly, creatures can walk on flying paved roads and Armok Vision shows flying paved roads from any distance, just like walls and floors:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The fort is 26 years old:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Another angle:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The system that should fill flying glass tubs with magma has been completed and loaded:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

New project started. Dwarves are going to build an animated picture on the bottom of magma sea. Every pixel is a drawbridge. Then dwarves will flood it again with magma and then the picture will appear when drawbridges are raised and dive when drawbridges are lowered:

Dwarves built flying windows over a flying paved road:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Soldiers guard hell's gate against magma crabs. You can see unfinished demon-pipeline leading up to the demon-collector:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dwarves finished demon-pipeline, opened hell's gate, demons rushed to the demon-collector. Behind fortifications on the left you see troll lady Ngoso, she attracts them here:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

She attracts demons not very good. Miners dug another demon-collector, it's a very long meandering tunnel with drawbridges on both ends. A legendary marksdarf Archer8 in strange mood needed a stone located in the farther end of the tunnel. She got it but when she hauled it all along the corridor she lost her mind, gone berserk. I had to close the demon-collector with her inside:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

She managed to kill one demon before got slain.

Flying windows around a flying paved road look nicely:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

First flying glass leaf has been finished, dwarves fill it with magma:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I found out that it should be done very slowly to avoid magma spilling out.

New construction started. In its early stage it looks like a flying tower all made of windows. Lower levels are made of obsidian gem windows, higher levels - of clear glass windows:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Human diplomat watches beautiful Jeweler1:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A crazy woman roams the graveyard:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

She failed her strange mood.

Do you remember little boy Kogan whose mother slew three magma crabs barehanded? He's grown up to a handsome young glassmaker:

Roads+windows do look very nice.

I like what you're doing with demons.

And I expected Kogan to be naked too.

Your statues are ginormous as always.

I still brightly remember the dancing dwarf silhouette. I see it is a mechanism this time.

Second flying leaf has been filled with magma:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You can see strange trenches on the surface, dwarves will fill them with magma later so they will shine.

Dwarves gained full control over the hell's gate, inserted in its lower end three grates and a locked hatch:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Flying tower of windows keeps on growing. The naked jeweler still walks and works naked:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

First time since 0.40.xx I've got normal-size siege, 120 goblins and 36 trolls:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

First invaders at the gates:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Entering traps:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then I had to close the entry because of weapon trap crash bug. Invaders turned their way to the ass of the statue, there's a temporary path inside the fort through the statue's ass:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dwarves tried to pour magma over them:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It did not work:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Invaders still advancing:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Lot of vomit, but I like how magma glows in it.

I wonder how it'd look in Rendermax?

Of course, by the time you secure things it is no longer necessary.

The flying tower of windows reminds me of modern international. Hm, now that's an idea...

Ah, 43.05. Fun times with that version.

43.05: Use cage traps, weapon traps crash the game.

44.10: Use cage traps, weapon traps crush the dwarves' feeelings.

So your statue eats tacos. At least the trenches are now filled with refuse.

I wonder, will a troll destroy the paved road it is standing on?

Vanguard of the enemies got inside:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

When enemies dissolved all over the map, soldiers counterattacked. It was a decisive victory:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I got a bit confused with burrows so few civilians got outside including the nudist human jeweler:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Last survived invaders climbed the experimental constructions where dwarves test and debug tecniques for creating flying objects:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Logs have fallen through holes in lower cave's floor to the bottom of drained magma sea:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Soldiers cleaned out the battlefield:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The arrow shows the corpse of the last invader. Trousers nearby belonged to a dwarf, obviously he or she lost it running away from the enemies.

Dwarves gathered a lot of goblinite:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There's a lack of human clothes in the fort, most humans became nudist:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I found out that when a bucket of water has been poured onto a paved road it creates mud not on the road but on the rock beneath:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A human monster slayer name Mete Straliroled descended to hell and attacked a demon. Got slayed immediately but the demon got caught in the web spitted by another demon earlier so soldiers shot it easily. The nudist jeweler looted Mete's clothes, she looks very happy:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Armok Vision doesn't show dead bodies but Mete's corpse is here, just at her feet. She reminds me Barbara Brylska:

A legendary human spearmaster Tod Sudemluto killed a demon in a duel, one on one, the human has not been even wounded:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This is a group photo of defenders of the fort:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The dog stands on the hatch under which the hell begins. The goblin holding an axe is Amak Cegadocda, the best warrior of the fort, he has 117 frags, I wrote about him many times. The girl on the right is Risen Luslemthikut aka Archer15, she's 19 years old, she never grabs any weapons, she has become an elite wrestler instead. She killed 26 crundles barehanded. Once she dared attack a demon and survived:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Of course, she was not alone.

I found out that flying paved roads are immune to mud:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It seems impossible to grow hanging gardens in Dwarf Fortress.

The fort is 32 years old:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Another angle:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I found out that a single hungry head can kill a poisonous slavering crane with lidless eyes, enormous shell and long and sparse brown feathers:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Do you remember a soon-to-be-animated picture on the magma sea bottom? Miners dug out the ceiling above to make it a bit more beautiful:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Wrestler girl Archer15 fell from the statue and somehow managed to grab statue's cloak and stop her falling:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dwarves tried to rescue her but failed, she died anyway.

I found out that if dwarves build and dismantle a paved road over magma flows then magma flows miracolously transform to sand and undeground vegetation starts to grow on it:

For no reason miners dug out the ceiling over obsidian factory:

She's been rescued.

The glass tower, camera looks down:

Another view, on the left you can see obsidian factory and upper demon-collector over it:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The pillar leading through the ceiling is a water supply for obsidian factory.

The impulse generator for the animated picture got power supply:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Armok Vision 0.19.1 finally able to show flying constructions almost correctly (magma inside still not shown when camera looks up):

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Another angle:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Got an artefact named "The call of liberating", somehow it reminded me American invasion in Iraq:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

When using a flying road as a ceiling for a flying cube, it looks a bit ugly when looking from outside:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But from the inside it looks much better:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There are a lot of cave moss grown up over the terraformed magma sea bottom:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also you see in this photo clear glass ramps that dwarves built to walk over the magma sea bottom easier.

The statue:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Terraformed magma sea bottom looks funny in Stone Sense:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dwarves filled a green glass flying cube with magma, apparently it looks very ugly:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In the next experiment dwarves hung in the air various things around a flying road:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And then setup a troll over the road:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Eventually she destroyed or toppled everything except the vertical grate and the coffin. Then I noticed that the troll is visible from the caves and it makes it impossible to few dwarves to return to the fort and they started to starve. Soldiers arrived, somehow two unarmed archers appeared to stand over the flying road, I don't know how they managed to get there:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Miners tried to dig terraformed magma sea bottom with d+h. I found out that after such digging the sand transforms back to magma flows but one z-level lower some stone ramps have been created:

THe pit over the underground animation keeps on growing:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's time to test the animation. The first test doesn't involve magma, the impulse-generating minecart is being guided manually:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It seemed to me that it's so messy because the dwarf pushing the minecart was pushing it too fast. I decided to flood this place with magma:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then dwarves started it mechanically, using hydro power, it's still fucking messy:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then I abandoned this project.

Dwarves started new above-groud constructuion, a great flying glass field where captured trolls and goblins will roam high in the sky. For now it's just a small fragment of temporaery obsidian bottom on which the glass roads are to be constructed:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Nude dwarwes walk down the hell:

*notices fort having dropped off and come back*

As always, the scale begets comprehension.

The logs falling through last cavern reminds me of how in worlds without magma sea or below the trees still leave logs - into nothingness.

Mete Straliroled does look happy.

Remind me, where do the demons wander in from?

Hanging aboveground gardens need soil floors and nearby soil walls on level below. Trees need support too, so...Incomptabile with flying windows. Closest is be done with hidden flying supports.

The shot from above the fort with magma inside the leafs is best angle for showcasing the leaves. And the shadow the statue casts - though it is imposing from bottom. The glass tower floating alongside reminds me of rulership scepters.

Quite a lot of effort in that animation. I think I can see what you were going for ( a bouncing coin), it's pretty.

Magma sea terraforming + glass ramps reminds me of chinese greenhouses.

The flying troll road experiment was interesting (plus got to see variety of flying buildings - grates are nice) - thinking about it, buildingdestroyers don't destroy roads either. Alas, I can't think of an use.

Does show that the building tile itself doesn't need to be accessible.

Magma sea bottom digging...I thought Toady disallowed it alongside disabling marking unrevealed ramps. Are you in 44.12? If so, it can come in handy.

And the magma washes the statue clean of vomit, for once. Well, I'm sure the rest will be green again.

I still have no idea why my dwarves are naked. There's a lot of variuous clothes in the fort, people just don't care.

The strange yellow things hanging in the air over the deck are golden statues of deities that citizens of Relicdips worship. Some statues are not very interesting, some other deserve to be mentioned. For example, there's a statue depicting the goddess of fame and hospitality Uk torturing a goblin:

Are those the start of arms I see?

The "need empty cage" has also shown up for me when trying to pit creatures. Just got to have empty cage; they won't use it for anything they just want it to be available.

I've wondered: can supports hang in the air just like roads and other stuff? The answer is yes but only pretty low, there must be at least diagonal connection between the support and an ordinary construction or rock mass:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Those flying supports are fully functional, it's possible to build ordinary constructions over them:

And to freeze ice over them with water in buckets, it's OK, nothing collapses:

suprisingly attracted all the demons still inhabiting hell. Even more surprisingly the demons, instead of entering inside, crowded beneath the hatch on the right and seemingly got asleep. It seems that I've managed to exploit a bug in their nervous systems.

In hell dwarves walled out the deepest z-level fully and the next z-level partially:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ice cube's bottom has been finished, dwarves are building the exoskeleton from which they're going to pour water inside:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The megapit over the failed underground animation keeps on growing:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dwarves started to pour water into the ice cube. I found out that water freezes not when touching a solid surface as I thought before but right in the air, still falling. Finally it either glues to a construction or falls down as a solid ice thing breaking everything beneath, just like any other cave-in. I tried to fill whole cube from above but got just a few shelf-like shapes right under the top:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also I found out that the ice in Armok Vision is very transparent, much more than the glass.

In hell naked (because the same glitch as before) dwarves keep on building walls, it looks like a strip-show:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dwarves change the strategy to build the ice cube. Now they try to freeze it out not from above but from below, like any other construction:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

On the bottom of the cube dwarves installed some furniture, mainly armor stands that current mayor likes so much:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I planned that those armor stands should become the bait for demons but suddenly a thought experiment clearly showed that even in freezing environments it's possible to ice to melt in the middle of a summer. Few dwarves rode the wave and fell down from the altitude of 87 or even 90 z-levels:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Fortunately I had a recent save so it didn't really happen. In the main thread of Relicdip's history dwarves evacuated from the danger zone, no-one got hurt. By the way, I found out that according to dwarven physics solid items fall significantly faster than liquid water. The waterfall is beautiful:

First falling waterdrops were still in the air when water suddenly froze, not everywhere, just in some places, probably in one biome of the two:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

On the surface the hell of a mess of ice, water, magma and obsidian is forming:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It grows:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

An icy wall grew up near the edge of the map:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

One flying glass leaf, damaged by falling ice, is leaking. Big icy things hang in the air not falling, I have no idea what the fuck is going on:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In the end of July all the water froze, hanging icy things finally fell. Flying deck's obsidian foundation got transparent where ice has formed over it:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Miners tried to dig out the ice that has been formed over the flying deck. When they finished any stripe of ice, strange thing happened: the obsidian foundation beneath the entire stripe suddenly collapsed, obsidian blocks fell on the ground, ice boulders disappeared but the ground where the blocks fell over, got covered with ice:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dwarves built an outside mason workshop to make ice blocks, I didn't know that it's techically imposible:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Miners also dug out the permafrosted brook. The mysterious virtually solid surface of the brook fell one z-level down, the brook became the underground one. Miners had to pierce its cover with many stairs:

The embark has run out of ice. Dwarves set up a primitive ice factory based on pouring buckets of water from a long wall. First I understood that the ice should be dug with d+h, not with d+d:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then I understood that it's very dangerous design, it's highly likely for dwarves working here to follow the fate of general Karbyshev. Dwarves try to pour water from higher altitude, it goes weirdly wrong:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Apparently water poured into freezing air freezes after a random time interval, usually very short. Moreover, next summer this ice molt, the water dropped down, entered a layer of colder air and immediately froze again. Finally the statue got a pair of long icy handles growing out of its ass:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The statue has grown up to the shoulders. As the body gets thinner, construction workers more often get outside commuting to their workplaces:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Meanwhile dwarves secured the hell completely:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Next goal is to cover all the bottomless pits with thick walls able to survive collapsing ceiling. I found out that bottomless pits look beautiful in Armok Vision:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A miner suddenly started without a reason to train climbing right over a magma lake:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

He survived.

Another weregilamonster arrived. Stayed for a while at the gates of the fort then transformed into a pretty goblin lady:

Then she's been beaten to death with metal crossbows.

It's time to fill 76-100 stories of the statue with magma. That's how it looked inside the statue right before:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Pumps got energised, magma started to flow. Do you remember the naked girl posing near the pumps? That's the same place:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Magma reached the enclosed pathway leading to the failed icecube:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Finally filled all 100 z-levels:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dwarves tried to make an ice factory another way. They built a pump stack sending water to the surface, the mechanization leads right through the graveyard:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then I found out that water freezes under clear sky immediately. It's impossible to create significant amounts of ice this way:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Miners dug a long ring-shaped tunnel around a decorative trench, filled it with water, got an icy wall:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then I found out that it's incredibly dangerous to dig such a wall, there's a decent chance for a miner to get frozen into ice. So I tried another way. Miners dug out a pit 10x10x16 tiles:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Filled it with water:

This is, without a doubt, the most ambitious construction project since Undergrotto (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=50916.0).  Have you needed to increase the map's vertical limit after you started?  Climbing over magma and the frozen Miners gave me a laugh :)  I have no idea why this hasn't seen more attention, but as someone who also enjoys building statues, I am amazed by what you have done here.

Have you needed to increase the map's vertical limit after you started?

Yes, "infiniteSky 100" in DFHack.

When the 10x10x16 pit had been filled with water, miners dug out all the soil over it, the water had frozen:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then miners began to dig the ice out:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ice cube construction resumed, dwarves dismantled obsidian floor tiles, constructed icy plates instead:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Miners dug very long, almost vertical tunnel from almost demon-kennel to the surface. Dwarves started to build an icy stairway from this place upward:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The fort is 64 years old. The glass tower got ready to be filled with magma:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Another angle:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I found out that ice boulders sometimes melt when builders haul them to the place of construction. Initially it was not very often but since magma fill 100 stories of the statue, it has become almost inevitable. But the icy stairway to heaven dwarves build with no problems:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The magmafiller device for the glass tower zoomed in:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dwarves filled the glass tower with magma. I found out that pressurized magma siphons upward through the stairholes in the shoulders of the statue:

One more miner trains climbing over the magma lake, he crawls the megapit's ceiling like a fly. The photo is made from the ceiling of the upper demon-collector, there's a lot of underground trees over it:

When the flying glass tower had been filled with magma, dwarves had to partially drain magma out of the statue - to make access to the magma-injecting system to dismantle it later. Unfortunately, Stone Sense still broken and Armok Vision steadily glitched when I tried to film a video, so all I could produce were four still images made in Armok Vision from various angles.
