Title: Brutal: Wrath of the Wilds - Beginning in thread hunt...
Post by: GlyphGryph on March 20, 2010, 10:06:50 pm
The setup thread: http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=51115.0

You arrive in the demon encampment, surrounded by the din of diversity. Creatures of all shapes and sizes and abilities and temperaments surround you.

There are many reasons for monsters to be here. Whether they come to fight for the safety of their homes, hatred of the peoples, a twisted sense of justice, or a deep seated bloodlust, for the first time in history they have decided to come together, to join forces and create a force that can repel the invaders from these lands.

Many of the monsters move directly to the front lines, an ever shifting battlefield where lives are short and brutal. The armies of the various civilized races are effectively tied up in these various battlefields, and it is expected all monsters will put in time there.

But it is not the only job for monsters to do - just as important, monsters are sent afield to sow chaos and demoralize the enemy civilian populations. This is where the bulk of weaker monsters end up, practicing their craft until they can effectively take on the heroes that frequent the battlefields and have a chance of surviving.

Sometimes, there are even special missions or tasks monsters are given to interrupt enemy supply lines or settlements, or deal with various pressing issues. These are given by the demons.

The demons... these creatures are the glue that holds this monstrous alliance together. No one is truly sure from where they came, but they arrived in an hour of need. It is they who handle the planning and logistics of this war - and it is to them you must now report.

But before you enter, the infernal troll at the gates informs you that you must make a choice before you enter. You must choose your companion.

The companion is a creature with the ability to speak many languages to aide communication, fly messages from place to place, and provide aid when needed. Each group of monsters is assigned only one.

You may choose as your companion a Parrot, a Corvid, or a Devil. You may also ask any questions you want to now - when you are let inside, you will be brought directly to your demonic overlord for a briefing on what you will do next.

Okay everyone, this is the official in game thread - We'll agree on various conventions as we go, but for now OOC stuff is plaintext, IC stuff is coloured.

Our first session will be at Thursday 5:30 EST (10:30 GMT)
We'll be using AIM, which you don't have to install. You can launch it from:
http://products.aim.com/products/express
though you WILL have to create an account. We might switch to IRC eventually, but the first session or two, at the least, will be in AIM.
It may not be the best time for everyone, either, but this is mostly a trial run to see how this will work. If you can make it, let me know - if you can't, feel free to participate in the thread for now - we'll try to hash out a time when it can work out, and I'll be trying to get another host who can handle people in less convenient time zones.

For now, you can introduce your characters, interact, and think about which companion you want.

AIM name will be GlyphGryph

Tikkerie sized up the possible companions before him. The parrot stood preening it's feathers. After just one glance, the cockatrice knew he could never travel with it. Far too vain, he thought, making sure his own feathers were shining and in order. Satisfied, he turned his attention to the other two.
Demons made Tik nervous, no matter how small. He turned away from the imp.
That left the crow.
Tikkerie regarded the crow. The crow let loose a gutteral cry, and Tik quickly scrambled backwards, stumbling into a fellow monster.

Black woke abruptly when something hit him in the side. He had decided to take a nap before entering the turmoil of the camp, and nobody had even noticed him when he dozed away, tucked deeply in the shadows, until now. The panther rose from the shadows of the wooden pallisade, looked at the scaled bired in front of him, and the gaze of the monster made him feel weird - so he quickly leaped towards the troll at the entrance. After a short conversation, Black approached the three companions standing in front of him. "Birds? I eat birds. But this one will do", and he pointed at the small demon creature at the end of the line.

He shouted "Hey, Birdy. Have a good hunt." to the cockatrice before he entered the camp, and started looking for a cozy place of deep darkness.

I'm available on thursday. Now checking AIM.

The troll put out his arm to stop the panther.

"Hold on now, its got to be one of them... "group" decisions. The demons wants it should be a lesson or something. Right now we got a vote for the devil, and a vote for the crow... I think a vote for the crow anyways."

Tikkerie cackled unhappily. Birdie?! How dare you, cat! Tik became so caught up in the wording that he missed entirely the good intent behind them. Naturally, he did not voice his objections aloud. After all, the shadow panther was larger than he.
Tikkerie lashed his tail in agitation. When would they be allowed to pass?

Yup, that was a vote for the crow. Also, bump.

Tika tika, tika tika... the flesh is succulent on the parrot... perhaps to much so... I think it is more for eating than for talking... skhaaa... I say we take the imp... better to spy for us in the dark holes of the humans...

One vote for taking the imp and one vote for eating the parrot.

A hulking wolf stalked to the palisade, moving its massive head around to look at the companions gathered around him.

"Crow."

One more vote for eating the parrot.

Though he finds cannibalism distasteful, Tikkerie cannot stand the sight of a bird with brighter plumage than his own.

One more vote for eating the parrot!

The parrot is starting to look very worried. Very worried. The devil just sort of grins.

3 votes devil
2 votes crow

4 votes for eating the parrot.

A short time later, a new parrot is sent for to replace the pile of blood and feathers for when the next group of monsters shows up, and the party is ushered inside.

"The Devil can be a little less reliable than many of the messengers, but he knows who the bosses are. And you're going to see them now. Also, the little bugger is more powerful than he looks - he can control small flame jets if you ever need anything lit on fire."

The Imp flutters about a bit.
"Thank gods you guys ate that freakin' parrot. You haven't had to stand around with him for hours, but trust me - destroying that feeble minded gossip was the right choice. You'll be much happier with me in your group."

You are led into a large tend, and in the tent is a large throne upon which a massive demon sits, chin resting on his hand.

He straightens as your group enters, and raises a hand for silence. Then he begins to speak, in a low rumbling voice.

"Otuthurikerog owecedefash osoxopuq citiph gubohiwo araw yaluyubecunaz. Othokeshul bequphola. Irushoje vaphubidosh inaphecho higobutachexo? The devil flits up to the demons shoulder.

"Okay, I'll translate for you guys, since that's my job. He says you guys are pretty awesome looking, and should totally go find the nearest high level hero and impale yourselves on his sword."

The demon turns his head slowly and glares at the devil. "Uh, slaughter him?"

"Okay, okay!" says the devil, apparently struggling with some force in his head. "Actually, he welcomes you, and explains a bunch of stuff about how you can choose to go on missions, go hunting on your own, or visit the battlefields. In addition, he encourages you to return with any valuables or magical artifacts you find. The demons can make use of such things, and you may be granted various demonic boons or your own lair in return."

This thread will only be usable for going hunting. Each chat session, however, will start with you choosing one of the three options.

You can hunt three times per day. Once during the sunlight hours, once during twilight, and once in the night.

You must choose a region, density, and location to hunt.

For regions, your options are the Forestlands (Elves and rarely Humans), the Coastal Plains (Humans), or the Mountains (Dwarves and occasionally Goblins).

The densities are:
Wilderness, Fringe, Settled, and City

Locations are based on the previous two choices.

First suggestion for each (by a different poster) wins. :P

You can also continue conversing with each other and the demon and devil for now as well. You'll depart sometime tomorrow for the hunt.

Okay, Wilderness forest it is!

There are no particular locations for the wilderness - you find whatever you come across.

Unfortunately me encounter sheet is inaccesible right now - I'll roll up what happens next later tonight.

woops, totally missed this thread, but I'm here now, might even make the aim session now that I know I don't have to download anything.

A quiet voice seems to echo from all around you. "I will accompany you, to thiss foresst." A slight flicker in one dimly lit corner betrays the Shade's presence just enough to catch the eye of the alert. Along with the voice and movement there is the cold aura of death, and the subtle heat of an infernal.

To the shadow:
"Ah, at last, a companion worthy of darkness. We'll have to hunt together some time."

There is no response from the elemental creature. No response for quite some time. Then as you are about to move on to another topic, the cool hissing voice whispers a response, "I hunt with terror, and very rarely feed..." The last word has a jolting shift in tone from the deep cool baritone, into a sharp, high pitched trill that trails about the room until it slowly fades.

Tikkerie feels rather intimidated by the larger creatures, and looks for some his size, or smaller. He introduces himself to the velociraptor, trying to seem as composed as possible. He keeps it simple, "You may call me Tikkerie." His efforts are somewhat undermined by his fear of the giant spider.

The first session has been completed!

Summary: Five dwarves killed, two disabled and captured. Enemy expansion disrupted.
You gained a small pile of gold and have claimed the small two bedroom pit, complete with wagon and half finished wall, as your new official lair.

So do you guys trust the imp enough to stay in the dwarf place? Methinks it will be crawling with heroes trying to find out what happened to the dwarfs. On the other hand I need to rest for a week before I am in shape to be doing anything so I like the idea of a place we can hole up in.

I think any place we decide to keep for our own will attract heroes and adventurers and even other monsters wanting to take ours for their own. Goes with the nature of having a Lair.
Title: Re: Brutal: Wrath of the Wilds - First session finished and posted.

Well ya, but I meant more heroes/adventurers/monsters, before we are ready for them. Anyway can we like hire digging creatures to dig out more room for us? I think that it is going to get crowded really fast. Also we need to set it up for awesome. I want a alcove that is hidden above the entrance that has drag lines dangling down to tell me when we have "visitors."

The group gets 2 favour for completing the dwarf mission.

Favour can also be bought for 250 gold each. Favour is spent on "Demonic Boons". They demons are tight lipped about what these boons are, exactly, but its rumoured the the more favour you use in a go, the better your chances of getting something good.

That's going to be really expensive; with the tunnel, we make sure every single trap we buy is activated before enemies get in, and thus we don't have to pay as much.

Hrm, did we each get 2 favor, or was that 2 favor for the group as a whole?

I was all ready to purchase myself a tunnel with a tiny room at the end and some candles, but if all I have is the 27 gold from the end of the session, that's not happening any time soon.

Also, do we get to keep the tools/objects in here from the dwarves, like beds, tables chairs, light sources, barrels of booze(assuming the devil didn't drink it all). Not that I'd really want anything besides maybe a wall torch and some dwarf bones to spruce up my future room.

I think it was the group as a whole.

I think we should get a Shrine as soon as possible, so probably most of use will have our ambitions thwarted for a while. I think a shrine would go well in your room by the way.

Edit: here is a quick mock up of what I think our shrine should look like.

The stairs don't seem to connect properly. For example, on the first floor, there's a blue stair leading down and to the left, in the fourth column. This means that on Basement 2, there should be a red stair leading up and to the right in the fifth column. However, it's in the second column instead.

Traps are fine I suppose, might also want to finish that surface wall.

Meanwhile, I shall claim one of the wall torches, and sit in a corner on the 3rd level, maybe near the Green R. Not much I can do with 27 gold :P We need to go jump a dragon or something with loot. >.>

also, don't forget various dwarf objects and corpses. Should be at least one pickaxe, one lumberjack axe, a crossbow and some bolts, and plenty of bones and rotting dwarfs.

Haika, since you got that much gold each you could, conceivably, pool it for some bigger thing. At the very least you could use it to clear some rubble.

Humm just saw Bedding - Aids recovery. 50 gold for a 1x1 square. That will be helpful... I suggest that we break down that bed move it into the inner chamber than I take a nap.

I could, but at the same time, I'm rather greedy. And since I didn't find any gemstones to apease my sense of shiny things, I'll save up my coins for my own little part of the lair. For now, let the communal favor points be turned into gold and used for traps and clearing and general stuff like the shrine.

Though I was wondering, might we find any gemstones or shiny metal by digging around here? Dwarves usually look for stone with such things in it. And while iron and such has very little appeal, we might be able to sell it, or hit gems, silver, or gold. Not that I'm planning to sit around digging in the dirt for my shiny things, but still, it's possible.

And I'm fine with letting you have the bed, not like I can use bedding for anything. heh Maybe to hold my skull collection when I have more than one dwarf skull.

I think we should save favor points, they have to potential to be more useful than gold. As evidenced by the fact that you can turn one into 100 gold but it takes 250 gold to get one favor.
Title: Re: Brutal: Wrath of the Wilds - First session finished and posted.
Post by: EagleV on March 26, 2010, 05:21:19 am
I also think we should get the shrine, even if we have nothing left for traps afterwards. We will probably rest for a while, if there are heroes coming to check out what happens, we'll probably still be here. And we will have the advantages of surprise, maybe number, darkness, knowing the map, and a frightening shrine.

I think we should avoid converting favor/gold if at all possible. It's just not efficient.

Yes sorry, I also am against converting favor to gold... maybe gold to favor may be worth it... Any way even if we trade all of our favor for gold we still cant afford a shrine.

Ho'kay. Hunting time GO!

Your group spends some time trawling the wilderness, until you discover an isolated compound. There are some low walls around, and occasionally you see someone wearing a brightly colored shirt walk from the compound to one of the smaller buildings nearby.

The compound has walls about six feet high, and is moderate sized. There are at least 5 people inside - you noticed 1 goblin, 2 elves, a dwarf and a human.
The front gate is open, allowing a view of a garden courtyard inside with a large fountain in the center.
The smaller buildings appear to be for storage of goods.

Anyone who wants in on the hunt, chime in now and we'll start. Also, choose the time of day you will attack.

The options are night, day, and twilight. There are technically two twilights, and one is dusk, so dusk it is!

So will there be any other takers, I wonder, or will this be a two man operation? :P

Bed does indeed double your healing rate. Right now, your heal wait is equal to your "regen" for each day you guys rest. For the purposes of this thread, assume it is equal to real life days where you are not adventuring. So you heal every day while sitting this out.

Ok, FINALLY got around to reading this log.

I think we should take this as our lair FOR NOW, but not invest to much into improving it just yet. perhaps a chest, some more bedding, and a Narrow Hallway (this seems the best place to live in, as one can live in the upper part and one in the lower, because I assume "beding" for a bid or shadow or such can be placed elevated of ground.) or two to sleep in the end of. Once we get enough to afford more than that we shuld get a more proper lair instead unless this proves to be even better than it seems, the trap corido ideas are expensive and the layout of this place dosnt fit, so wait with those. I also think we shuldn't spend more than half our gold on lair stuff for now, and we shuld save all the Favor for future Boons.
I think the bed shuld be made into beding for the spider, pherhaps placed among the ruble in the innermost room, or maybe in that hole left by the falling rock. I dont think ruble shuld be cleared away, that costs money and I think rubble gives some ambience anyway.

Also, i think what to do with the donkey needs discusion. Heverer, exept for that grass addict I think evrything not nailed down shuld be draged inside, wagon, tools, rubble, corpses, etc.

I'd like to join the hunt,a nd ICwise i shuld, but it's WAY to late right now and I'm tired.

Speaking of the bedding, can Cript get to the bed, currently, or is the rubble completely blocking it? If so, I'd be willing to spend some of my money to clear the rubble.

He's agile enough to climb over the rubble and get to the bed, but it takes him a turn, so he might have trouble getting out in an emergency (it does mean he'll be a bit safer and might go unnoticed though)

Okay, of those who have in-ed, feel free to start planning your attack on the compound!

The compound attack will happen in thread, and probably take a while, so make sure to post a reminder of who you are to everyone and your react for turn order. However, you can all post your turns/actions, and I'll proccess them when I can turn.

And to let me know, start off each post with Hunt on its own line so I know you are not just discussing other stuff.

Character:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My target will be the human, once the shadows reach long enough, I will make my way along the wall, staying in the shadows until I find my target.

From there, I will use a chilling spook attack, and reach from a shadow to grab his/her ankle and appear like a bloody human child crying desperately, before melting back into the shadows. (+6 base fear)

As the sun starts to set, Tikkerie takes to the air to scout while Haika slides through the shadows unnoticed, pushing himself against the walls of the compound.

tikkerie notices, inside the wall, there is a central compound, an outhouse, a few gardens, the previously mentioned fountain, and a large courtyard. In it are several beings apparently praying towards the setting sun. None are wearing shoes.

Hiding in the shadows, Shadow and Black slowly approach a human leaning against the gate, staring off into space. A female elf joins him a few moments later.

'Hari, what are you doing out here? Its prayer hour, I'd have thought you'd be joining in."

He looks to the elf. "Eh, I don't feel that well tonight - I'm on edge for some reason. I've been thinking a lot lately. Tanya, do you think its right we're isolating ourselves from the world being all the way out here?"

Tanya smiles at him and touches his face. "Oh, Hari... This is our refuge of peace and love and harmony, a place that accepts all beings regardless of race. Are you not happy here?"

Hari smiles back. "No, I am - its just, I feel like we should be spreading out message, sharing it..."

They will continue conversing until everyone decides on their next action.

The shadow spooks the Elf for 8 fear. The Elf feels a cold chill run up his spine, as if some ethereal creature is running its cold nails up his back. As he sees the eyes of the elf opposite with him, he spins around and comes face to face with a mass of shadows teeth that rush towards his face before dissipating around him as it strikes, chilling him to his bones. He stumbles backwards into the elf, then turns to face her. He seems about to scream something to her when a black shadowy cat launches itself from the darkness and tackles the elf to the ground.

The surprise assault gives a bonus of 4 fear to the human and 4 fear to the Elf.

The Elf is not panicked yet, just very surprised - the human is panicked, and starts screaming.

Meanwhile, Tikkerie steals all the shoes.

Rivald is ready to swarm in from the shadows and strike.

The party gains 30 experience for panicking the human.

Yah, Cheddarius, care to post char stats/abilities up to current level? And you do have a second dude, I believe.

But still...

The human man turns to flee, but he feels a heavy wait slam into his leg, and then the ripping of teeth against flesh. He tears through the hamstring and sends chunks of flesh and a stream of blood flying through the air. The man collapses to the ground, screaming in pain. He crawls for a bit and then stops making progress, just screaming and scrabbling at the dirt.

Ravald has dealt 4 damage to the enemies leg!
The Human is now Traumatized!

The elf woman suffers 4 fear for seeing her friends leg torn to pieces! She is now panicked!

Not sure if I did my action yet or not, but next spook, will be a disconcerning giggling. Young and very high pitched. (target elf for now, unless I see another target not yet panicked)

Also, did we get any exp for that human traumatized, and elven panic, since we got exp for the human panicing.

And who else is left if any for targets?

Yeah, 40 exp to the group for the traumatize, 30 for the panic

The other velociraptor runs in and begins snacking on the mans leg as the elf woman watches. She is screaming now, and struggling to get up - but a high pitched giggle begins to build in the shadows behind her into until turns into a half giggle, half wailing scream. As the jaws leap for her throat, she becomes traumatized. Moments later, she becomes quite dead.

The elf is now traumatized. The elf takes 4 damage to the throat and her head is removed.

All characters gain 40 experience for the traumatize and 30 for the removal of a head. In addition, those participating can get an additional 30 experience for entertaining me with you quick and effective rush.

Tikkerie sees that the others are very much on their own now, running and yelling and rushing into the compound. Some try to grab their shoes first, and seem very confused by their absence.
