Okay either Toady made the megabeasts a bit too powerful, or my genned humans/dwarves are just horribly bad. Or maybe they live in small groups.
I generated a large island world which has 70 megabeasts, of which over a period of 1050 years, NONE died. And they weren't hiding either. One hydra had done 50 rampages, and there was one megabeast with over 1000 kills. They all have many worshippers.
There were also around 900 forgotten beasts but those weren't up to much. :P
Here's one:(http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b120/iamerik/Dwarf%20Fortress/Dak.jpg)
As for other monsters, one human town suffered over 80 Monster Rampages.
A little nice one in my opinion.
Wur Glowgem the Earthen Flier, a sheep fiend*, escapes the underworld in the year 2. In the year 3, it convinces the Ambiguous Realm that it is a manifestation of Nemen Righteousfortunes, settles in Soulnourished, and by popular support, creates the position of Master. In the year 384, Wur is burned to death in dragonfire by Akera Heatparches the Flare of Diamonds.
Two years later, Inrus takes the position of master of the Ambiguous Realm. Who is Inrus? A sheep fiend who convinced that it is a manifestation of Nemen Righteousfortunes, of course!
"Master, you have returned!" - "Er, yes, of course. What did I miss?"
A bit of a pity that the two didn't do more than move between homes.
*A towering one-eyed sheep twisted into humanoid form. It knows and intones the names of all it encounters. Its cardinal hair is unkempt. Beware its noxious secretions!
The description is kind of more badass than a sheep demon has any right to be.
Forsaken Beasts are just wow...some are creepy, some are ridicolous.
I generated a few worlds with 1000 titans/megabeasts just to check them out. Interstingly, it looks like not all animals are eligible to be used as a base.
It's vermins, the dinosaur types and some other stuff like wolves. So we get stuff like colossal shrimp, or huge eyeless tarantulas. There's also colossal things made of <stuff>.
I think Toady watched some japanese monster movies while coding this, since many of the beasts would be quite at home there 8)
