E.Albright and I are playing a PBEM duel in Shadow Empire.
This thread is for whatever purpose we might think of as we play. Maybe there'll be some (outdated, surely) AARs, maybe some banter, maybe some maps, maybe some propaganda and fake news. Maybe nothing. We'll see how it goes. It's a first PBEM in this game for both of us, so we'll see what's feasible and what we feel like doing.

General Discussion / Scoops of Novel: The Judgementing
« on: June 21, 2022, 07:30:54 am »
What is Novel? Why is Novel?

Is this glibness of a troll? Self-important pseudo-intellectualism? Random bot-like effusions? An academic running a social experiment?
Or is it the only thing keeping the lower boards from descending into elderly senility? An injection of oddness to wake up the rigid minds. A thing that keeps you coming back for more. An always welcome, clickable distraction.
Can it be both?

I don't know. Do you know?
Does Novel know?

Play With Your Buddies / Dominions 5 Round 06 - The end

Come forth, state your claim.
Whether an ancient spirit, knowing and jaded - or a brazen upstart, quick and unfettered.
The world is not yet formed, but the plans of gods span aeons.

As the void parts, firm land takes root. Life will soon follow.

In a time long past, a claimant took reign. Unwelcome, unchallenged. But his dominion wanes. Pretenders stir in their slumber.

The creator of Hammerfight is out with a new release, and it deserves some exposure, methinks.

It's a weird game, doing its own thing. For better and for worse.

At the core there's aerial combat in semi-enclosed arenas, much like in Hammerfight. Only, no longer are you flying a glorified wooden outhouse, trying to swing a fuckhuge sword on a chain. Now it's clunky rocket-powered pieces of metal that can't decide if they want to be pre-dreadnought battleships or cold war-era moon landers, bristling with cannons and rockets. And maybe a nuke.
Fully ranged combat (with occasional ramming) is not as exhilarating as splitting enemies with an oversized axe. But landing high-calibre salvoes and seeing lumbering behemoths plunge to the ground amid spectacular explosions is satisfying nonetheless.

The fights are always 1 vs many, even though your fleet can be large. This kinda deflates the joy of having a fleet, but is understandable from game-design perspective. There is an option to retreat a damaged vessel during a fight, which lets the next one in queue take over, so it's not entirely pointless to haul those combat ships around.

But even though in the end it always goes down to having to fight some dudes, the main game seems to be played on the fleet simulation layer. It's all about getting into the right fights and avoiding the rest. People compare it to Silent Hunter in this respect. But I've never played that, so can't comment.
You have your fleet, flying around, trying to conquer cities. But you're doing more of a guerilla, or special forces thing, rather than seeking pitched battles. There's a lot of plotting courses, managing fuel reserves and repairs, sending detachments, listening to radio communications and decoding enemy movements; there's shooting cruise missiles (even nuclear) at range and attempting to evade or shoot down the same; hiding from pursuit and surprise attacks on shipping; a bit of exploration. Some of those have their own mini-games attached.

There's a few more layers included: a ship designer, where you can remodel any ship pretty freely; a landing mini-game (much like combat arena w/o shooting), a card-based conversation layer, ship crew promotions, and a radar thingy I'm still trying to figure out.

The setting feels unique. It has a Persian/Turkic-infused cultural setting, vaguely similar to Hammerfight's. Now with added flavours of Russian Empire and post-apocalypse (somebody blew up the Moon at some point, apparently).

The release is refreshingly not-EA, which doesn't mean there aren't any bugs. But at least the game is sold in its complete form.

The whole thing has a very old-school feel to it, both in game design and in how it looks. It can be both intriguing and annoying.
Graphics are nice, occasionally bordering on beautiful, if definitely indie-grade. The screenshots make it look better than it is, it should be said. There's granularity to it that doesn't show on smaller screenshots. The displays are cramped. Some of that might be intentional.

There are some odd choices w/r to saves - the game doesn't autosave on exit, but on certain actions, so it's not impossible to lose some hard-won progress. The manual saving doesn't exist (it classifies itself as a roguelike), but the game lets you make those on capturing certain locations. Finally, every combat or landing can be completely redone if you're not satisfied with it, at the cost of crew morale (depleting which can end you the game).

The many mechanics are kinda obscure and not always explained clearly or exhaustively.

Finally, it's somewhat on the pricey side for an indie release.

Still. I'm yet to get a good grip on how it all works, but so far seems to be worth the money. It's possible, though, that it'll turn out to be one of those games, where the bulk of the fun comes from figuring them out. We'll see.

Life Advice / Cleaning leather(?) wrapped handle
« on: June 21, 2019, 01:06:05 pm »
I've a bit of wood and fibreglass I'm using to pretend I'm an archer. It's got a handle wrapped in what I think is natural leather (of whatever beastly provenance), with the coarse side up.
Great for gripping, and looked rather handsome when new. But it drinks dirty sweat a bit too eagerly, and after a few hot days on the range it started to look nasty.

Does anyone have any idea how to clean and maintain something like that? I can't take it off the handle, and I'm rather wary of damaging the laminate underneath with too aggressive ideas. Like dunking it in water - which is incidentally the only thing I can think of.

This is probably basic stuff, but I'm drawing a blank here.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Caveman Literature
« on: June 18, 2018, 07:42:49 pm »
I'm trying to come up with a silly forum game. The rules are provisional - we'll see what works and what doesn't. Suggestions are welcome, but may not necessarily be heeded.

The idea is to write a synopsis to, or describe a recognizable scene from, a well-known (use your judgement) story - may be literature or film, or whatever - in Caveman English.
Make it as long or as short as you like (again, use your judgement - try to keep it fun; it might mean three well-chosen words, or three paragraphs).
Other people then try to guess the title of the original story. Once it's successfully guessed, another person writes another bit.

The rules of the Caveman English are as follows:
- only nouns, verbs and adjectives (no pronouns, adverbs, determiners, conjunctions - the whole lot; if not sure, check with a dictionary)
- verbs only as infinitives
- adjectives only after nouns (also affects nouns acting as adjectives)
- no Saxon genitive
- no names of characters or places
- only one-syllable words
- only punctuation allowed is the full stop (period) sign, the exclamation mark and the question mark.

E.g. Luke Skywalker flew his space ship towards the Death Star. He fired his ship's torpedoes into the exhaust port, blowing up the battle station.
=
Man fly ship. Ball float space. Ball big. Ball bad. Man shoot hole. Ball make boom.

Additional rules:
- Posters can be asked to clarify the description given, but both the question and the response (insofar as they are relevant to the riddle) must be in Caveman.
- If you think it might not be guessed otherwise, indicate whether it's a novel or a film (or something else), and/or whether it's a scene or the whole story.
- Failure to keep to the rules of the language invalidates the riddle, and another poster may have a go (but do indicate the fault in the other guy's bit).

General rules:
- If more than one bit gets posted due to ninjitsu, wait until all are answered before posting another.
- If the answer given is obviously correct, you don't have to wait for confirmation before posting another bit.
- If no one guesses correctly after a day (?), anyone may then post another bit.

It's getting late here, so I'll let you guys start it off. We'll see if it floats.

Life Advice / Painting a pushbike - arglebargle help!
« on: October 08, 2015, 02:09:56 pm »
Surely, somebody here has painted a bicycle before and can give me some hints to save what's left of my hair.

Sometime ago I got meself an old roadbike, which I recently decided to renovate.

Among other things, I cleaned it thoroughly, sandpapered the whole thing (it's a steel frame), then bought: a can of acrylic-based primer, a can of car paint and a can of clear varnish to coat it all, and applied it to the frame.

The coating looks nice and even, and I should be a happy camper.

But for fuck's sake, it's as durable as gingerbread man's bollocks. It flakes away exposing the metal with any handling that isn't ridiculously careful. It's pissing me off something fierce.
There's no way it's going to last in actual use. I imagine simple leaning it against a hard surface will leave a gashing wound in the coating.

I'm thinking going with a car paint wasn't the best choice. Or maybe the preparation wasn't right. Maybe I shouldn't use acrylic?
What kind of paint/technique should I use to end up with a nicely looking bike that will carry the look for many seasons?
If you've got some links to specific products, feel free post them here and I'll have a look.

I wish I knew what they used for the original paintjob that I had sandpapered to oblivion. It survived something like 20-30 years without much damage (and was a bitch to get off).

Cheers.

General Discussion / Defend ze glory of ze German Wunderwaffen!
« on: August 09, 2015, 02:36:27 pm »
Ze german tanks are under attack in the following discussion lifted from the sad thread.
Brandish your nerd cred and defend the gorillion-folded pzkpwf VI, V and IV (also known as the Tiger, the Panther, and the No-name workhorse) against the onslaught of innumerable hordes of... mostly just Lord Shonus (for now!).

I've no great interest in the subject, nor an expertise, but would love to see more said about it. So knock yourself out.

Spoiler: discussion starter (click to show/hide)

Also, in and about that discussion, ChairmanPoo linked to this hour-long talk about the reasons for the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviets. It is very interesting, although I didn't see how it was relevant to the topic at hand (there's just a brief mention of technology in the Q&A).

General Discussion / Kung Fury appreciation thread
« on: June 01, 2015, 05:41:31 am »
Kung Fury is a film. It is a film about Kung Fury.
It can be watched free of charge on Steam or here:
http://www.kungfury.com/
It's made of the worst things about 80s cinema condensed into 30 minutes of wonder and glory.

Express your appreciation for Kung Fury by expressing what you appreciate about Kung Fury.

Please appreciate Kung Fury responsibly, and above all, don't hassle the Hoff 9000.

I appreciate Kung Fury's partner because his tongue of steel can't be severed.

M'goodpeeple!

Every once in a while I generate a world with an embark site featuring a number of spires made mostly/partially of obsidian sticking above ground. They're usually nearby a volcano and in tundra - the latter is probably due to the level terrain lending itself to exposing them.

Does anyone have a current-version world in which they've encountered such features? That'd save me hours of painstakingly trying to generate one.

If you do, please post the seed and indicate where on the map is the embark site, in some way.

Cheerio.

I used to own a bootleg copy of a CD with some ambient music that I got from somebody. I've never learned what was the name of the band or the album. Somebody just scribbled "ambient" on it.
I've been trying to find what it was, but it's damn hard when you only remember the sound and there's hardly any lyrics.

Here's what I remember:

-It was released no later than 2002-ish. I think that's when I got it. Considering the history of the genre, could have been made anytime in the decade before that, but it is not a bad bet it was something of a new-ish release at the time.

-There was at least one track with a sound of waves featured prominently.

-There was a male voice in some of the tracks(at the beginning of the album, I think) declaring some random new-age nonsense.

-There was a female voice at least in one track(near the end). I remember her singing something to the effect of "I am here, you are there" in a breaking, lovelorn voice.

-It was generally quite melancholy in mood.

-It was not terribly high-brow or experimental. Rather cheesy in its earnestness, I could even say.

-It was not too long. Maybe 45-60 minutes total.

-Sounded a bit similar to Tycho. It could be even Tycho, but it's none of the albums I've found on youtube.

I really feel the urge to tickle my nostalgia bone, so if anybody can help it'd be awful nice.

Emperor of the Fading Suns!

The space-feudal setting, the epic struggle for power, the changing alliances, the machiavellism gone rampant! Also the game-breaking bugs the size of a galaxy, the unfinished features, the micromanagement purgatory!

Who would not instantly fall in love with this game, with this crooked vessel for the most involving diplomatic extravaganza ever released on the PC?

The following five players have known the game for a long time, some were there for its rushed release in 1996.
Three of us, namely Aqizzar, mainiac and yours truly, took part in the first ever EoFS game on this forum, in which emotions ran high, while scheming and backstabbing and dogged determination reached levels previously unheard of.
The alluringly vile aura of that game lured in Kebooo, a veteran player who joined bay12 soon after.
RedKing, whom I need hardly introduce, came out of the closet with his appreciation of Fading Suns only recently, to my knowledge at least.
Having lost RedKing soon after the game commenced, we replaced him Margrave, another veteran enthusiast of EoFS.

So here we are, determined to extract the game's potential for hard-core diplomacy while ignoring the bugs and having boatloads of fun in the process.

Let the struggle for the Emperor's throne begin!
