I have a huge supply of wooden and bone bolts currently and my marksdwarves are training happily. A few are becoming legendary and I'm stopping them from training on the targets and switching them to work on individual training (maybe slowly work on their other skills). I also plan on putting a few on patrol.
My question is that if I make a bunch of metal bolts for them to use and set their bolt preferences to "Any bolts" for training and combat will they automatically pick up metal (expensive?) ones first and only use the wooden and bone ones should the metal bolts run out?

I think the new version is still buggy in terms of what kinds of bolts the dorfs pick up and actually use, aka wood for hunting/combat, despite what preferences for bolts you set in the military menu
-
The old system, if you knew the bugs, was workable.
Dwarves picked up the bolts you assigned for training only when going to training but refilled with combat bolts as soon as a quiver was empty so dwarves would basically only ever use combat bolts. THAT bug has nothing to do with my question.

I never use training bolts. I just send them into the caverns and they can practice there.
-
I'm not asking about training or combat bolts... can anyone answer the question I have asked rather than one they think I might have done? XD
-
I allow them to use any kind of bolts. If possible I make metal bolts, but if I'm running low on bolts and ammo I'll make wood or bone bolts. Dwarves just use the ammo in a random order, but because the stockpile is right next to them they can reload nearly instantly, so while bone or wood bolts don't hit very hard they make up for it in quantity.

@Question.
I'm pretty sure about that. dwarves always pick up the most expensive stuff

I thought they did but I thought bolts might be different. That's the answer I was hoping for as it makes it easiest for me to set up my ammo :D
