The sound echoes through the musty cracks of the door to the attic you live in

"Helen! It's time for bed, you need to go to school tomorrow!"
Perhaps sleep is a good idea, you do need to go to school because you are fourteen.

Yup. Apparently mom hates us, so jumping onto her bed at 6:00 in the morning will either confirm this or prove otherwise, and either way will provide useful expository information.

I get the impression that the parents are probably either somewhat distant or are trying to get Helen to grow up. Was it always this way?

You remember going to someone's funeral when you were only six, after that...mommy and daddy started to get a bit distant at times, but not always

So whatever happened to upset dad so much will not happen for a while. Of course, I would bet Helen is still quite shaken, and it does take some time for the excitement to wear off.

Tug on mom's pillow and say something like the following:

"But it wasn't just a dream! I was a teenager and dad was angry and there were creepy voices!"

You get up and leave your parents room, stopping at the fridge beside to basement.....it's September 10th, 2006, according to the fridge calendar. You climb up the stair back into your room, and hug Monday, your stuffed rabbit...
