Title: 'Yìhétuán Yùndòng': The Great Boxer Rebellion (Story 11: Chinese Standoff)
Post by: TCM on November 23, 2012, 10:51:10 pm
So this is my sequel to the unfinished, but overall successful "Roll to Industrial Japan" & "~Blizzard Inferno: Tale of the Otriads~" game. So if you were in those, this game in the vein.

And this is important for those who are keen on historical accuracy: This is a fictional story based off of real events. Almost everything will differ from the actual events of the Boxer Rebellion, but the actual war will provide the initial framework for the game's setting.

With that said and done, onto the story!

Story:

Summer 1902. China is in turmoil for it's people. Treaties ensure that only the aristocrats and foreigners benefit from trade. Opium addiction is a pandemic that effects millions. Christians and their intuitions are given special privileges by the state. It looked like the entire nation would collapse, until the people had enough.

A few months ago, the people starting launching sporadic attacks on Chinese Christians and foreigners, killing them and destroying their property. The people now chant "Death to the Foreigners, glory to China!" In response to the violence, Empress Cixi has mobilized the Imperial Army and the Royal Han Guard. Now, a rebel group consisting of mainly farmers and peasants has risen to power. They call themselves the "Righteous Harmony Society", a group based nationalism and spirituality. They foreigners have witnessed their intense close-quarter-combat training, nicknaming them "Boxers".  The Muslim Kansu Braves and the Manchu Bannermen have supported the call for nationalism. The foreigners have sent soldiers over to quell the fighting, and several Chinese Aristocrats and Christians have gone over to their side. The Imperial Army is caught between helping Chinese people and allowing Western Trade and presence. New military technologies, such as repeating rifles, the first true machine guns and modern mines, make this perhaps the first contemporary war in history.

This is where you come in. You all come in from different backgrounds: Chinese and Foreigners, Buddhists, Christians and Muslims, Rich, Middle Class and Poor. You will change the path of this war and alter the future forever. And your journey starts now...

((The following two sections were copy and pasted from the Industrial Japan thread, sorry if they are rife with errors. :3))

Gameplay & Rules:

I will use the standard D6 dice roller, but this game will be based on my own decision and subjectivity rather than numbers. What I mean is that there will be less focus on numeral systems, (No HP and Exp. Bars) but instead more based on characters, situation and plot. For example, in a regular RTD, Character X attacking Enemy Y with a (6 vs. 4) result would normally result in -2 HP. However, here I take into account things like weapon, attack/defense positions, experience, health, and etc. So a (6 vs. 4) in a combat could mean anything from a kick that breaks a knee, to a gunshot to the head.

Also, instead of classic dice result rules, (1 & 2 are bad, 3-5 are good, 6 is bad) I will have this formula: The higher a number, the better a result. So 6's or above are the best results, and the numbers get smaller the result becomes more negative.

As for combat, first I will post the aggressor's attack, versus the defender's defense (X vs. Y). If X is more than Y, the attack hits. If X and Y are the same, the attacks cancel out, and there is no counter-attack. However, if Y is more than X, X misses the attack, and Y gets a counterattack. I roll again, and if Y>X, than Y hits. But if Y< or = to X, it misses.

Lastly, each number represents a different outcome. The higher a number is in a result, it will have a more dramatic effect than the same difference but with a lower result; i.e. (6 vs. 5) will be a more powerful attack than (3 vs. 2), a (5 vs. 1) has more impact than a (5 vs. 3), etc.

Attributes:

Attributes are permanent factors that modify rolls that pertain to their areas, i.e., Strength effects actions that utilize strength. Attributes can either be + or -. + Attributes have a 50% chance of adding +1 to rolls, while - Attributes add a 50% chance of -1 from effected rolls. It doesn't matter which Attributes you + or -. The main rule is that you can only have as many + Attributes as -, and vice-versa. (i.e., if you have 2 + Attributes you MUST have 2 - Attributes.)
The attributes are:

Strength: The amount of muscle that can be put into tasks. Effects actions like lifting heavy objects and melee combat.

Endurance: How long you can keep physically working. Effects things like traveling long distances and using heavy weaponry.

Agility: How quickly you can move. Effects things like sprinting, dodging and jumping.

Perception: How well you can see and aim. Effects things like looking around and using ranged weapons.

Toughness: How much physical pain you can take. Effects things like combat and disease.

Stealth: How sneaky you are. Effects being unnoticed, pickpocketing and lock picking.

Intelligence: How much raw brain power you have. Effects solving logical problems and using medicine.

Will: Mental toughness. How much mental strain you can take, and how you respond in peril.

Instinct: How fast your body can process new information. Effects counter-attacking and quick reactions.

Charisma: How well you can speak to people. Effects things like charm and intimidation.

Dexterity: How well you can work with your hands. Effects Martial Arts and grabbing objects.

Luck: How well Lady Luck treats you. Randomly effects roles.

Factions & Allegiances:

Instead of the two white-and-black sides in Imperial Japan, there is a huge spectrum between all the factions from Nationalism to Foreign Influence. Each faction has it's own goals and independence but will ally itself with any forces that provides mutual benefits.

Nationalist Chinese Factions: These are not all the factions in China, just those that lean towards Nationalism.

Imperial Army - This army follows the command of the Empress and those under her power. Her troops must obey her orders, as she may declare them to fight or support just about anyone.

Han Royal Guard - A small, elite bunch of units assigned to the Empress and her family. While the Imperial Army's goal is to provide for the Empress's military wishes, the Han Royal Guard exists to make sure nothing happens to her or her court.

Righteous Harmony Society - A.K.A. The Boxers. The largest group of Chinese Nationalist rebels. Unlike the Imperial Army, they are not a conventional army, and prefer to fight on a smaller scale. They practice many rituals centered around improving the body, mind, and spirit. Their chief aim is to drive all foreigners out of China.

Muslim Kansu Braves - An ally of the Boxers, the Kansu are a group of Nationalist Muslims in Western China. They are allied with the Boxers. The Kansu are used as shock troops whether it be an ambush, front-line charge or assassination. Despite using modern weaponry and equipment, the Kansu army only wears Chinese armor and plays Chinese instruments. They enjoy utilizing older weaponry and cavalry. As their name tells, they are all Muslims.

Manchu Bannermen - A Semi-Nationalist Force in northern China. Right now, the Bannermen are split into two armies: One is tasked with defending Beijing, though whether it is from the Boxers or foreigners is up to the decision of the general. The other is tasked with preventing the huge Russian forces from invading through the North.

Foreign Factions: These are not all foreign factions, just those that lean towards the foreign powers.

Eight-Nation Alliance - The "Foreign Powers" contesting with the Nationalist forces, particularly the Boxers and Kansu Braves. Each of them has different goals, equipment, and leadership, so if you choose one, just state which one it is in your character sheet. The 8 nations are, in a list from greatest to least amount of soldiers and ships currently in China: Japan, Russia, The United Kingdom, France, The United States, Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy.

Pro-Foreign Chinese - These are Chinese citizens that have allied, joined, or at least support the foreign powers. Many Pro-Foreign Chinese are Christians, merchants or aristocracy.

Neutral: These factions side neither with the Nationalists or the foreign powers.

Neutral Chinese - Neither side has compelled you, you just want to survive, whether that means finding shelter in China or escaping elsewhere. It shall not be an easy task, and even if you do complete, your story will not end there.

Neutral Foreigner - You are a foreigner that does not from come one of the countries that is fighting the Nationalists. Thankfully, this means although both sides will eye you closely, they will not be openly hostile to you like they are to each other. Countries with a foreign presence in China and not in the Eight-Nation Alliance are places like Korea, The Philippines, Indonesia, India, Portugal, Spain, Holland, the Ottoman Empire, etc.. After you put "Neutral Foreigner" in your character sheet, add which country they are from. ((Ex. Neutral Foreigner: Australia))

Bandit - All turmoils, such as a war, have their opportunists. You are one of them. Whether you work alone or in a group is your decision, but your main goal in the end is to acquire as much wealth as possible without getting killed or imprisoned forever.

Religion: With the conflict between Spiritual Buddhist and Christians, Religion is a major factor of anyone's person. Even if your character is not particularly religious, they must have a religion as this is what they publicly declare themselves as.

Buddhist - The largest Chinese religion, which follows the ancient teachings of Buddha. All Boxers are Buddhists and Bannermen are Buddhists.

Protestant - All countries have their share of Protestants, a collective of non-Catholic Christians. They are mainly found in The U.K., The U.S., France, and Germany. A about a third of the Chinese Christians are Protestants.

Catholic - The other major form of Christianity found in many of the countries, the main difference with the Protestants being the Catholic's central head; the Pope. The countries with a large amount of Catholics are Italy, France, Germany, the U.K. and the U.S. A little over a third of Chinese Christians are Catholic.

Eastern Orthodox - The third form of Christianity present in the great rebellion. Easter Orthodox is very minor in most countries except for Russia, where it is a majority. Less than one percent of Chinese Christians are Eastern Orthodox, and most of them that are live in Northern China.

Islam - A religion that has come in through the Middle East that follows the teaching of the prophet Muhammad. All the Kansu Braves are Muslims, and nearly any foreigners from the Middle East.

Shintoism - A spiritual religion based around certain practices and beliefs involving supernatural and spiritual forces. It is native, and exclusive, to Japan. (Although not all Japanese are Shintoists; in Japan there is a fairly large Christian minority.)

Judaism - The oldest Abrahamic religion centered around the teaching of the Biblical Old Testament. No major country involved in the Boxer Rebellion has a Jewish majority, but every country has a sizable Jewish minority.

Other - If your character belongs to a minor religion, at least for being in China, in the space for your character's religion, put the name of their religion and a brief explanation of it. Fictional religions are okay, but nothing crazy. ((I.e., no worshiping pancakes or only marrying purple chickens. Spin-off religions and cults are good.))

Weapons:
All characters will start out with two weapons, and in these two weapons they will be proficient. There are two types of starting weapons; Primary and Secondary. Primary is the default weapon, the one your character is most skilled with. Secondary weapons are side weapons, usually there to fill a purpose that the Primary can not. The Primary and Secondary weapons must be different.
Weapons will change based on Clan, Area and Biography. Note that these are only starting weapons: Characters can find and learn to use more.

Weapons are listed below, P means it can be only Primary, S means only secondary, PS can mean either.

Rifle (P) - A long barreled gun that can do damage at any range. At this point, many rifles are no longer single-shot, but repeating. They create the bulk of weaponry used by standard modernized infantries.

Sword (PS) - A blade that cuts into flesh, or stabs it through.

Spear (P) - One of the oldest weapons, a long stick with a pointed metal end. Some can be thrown, others are multi-edged.

Pistol (PS) - A smaller gun than the rifle. While not as accurate or powerful than the rifle, it is easier to draw and reload, making it very useful in close quarters.

Revolver (PS) - A handgun related to the pistol, the main difference being it's revolving cylinder ammunition chambers. It does not have the firing rate of the pistol, though it's shots have more impact.

Knife (S) - A blade that acts as a smaller sword. Has a variety of uses. Knives are very different depending on which country of origin they come from.

Bombs (S) - A sack of explosives used for multiple purposes. Varies greatly on country of origin.

Crossbow (PS) - The traditional Bow has been rendered obsolete due to the innovation of repeating rifles. However, due to it's specialization, the Crossbow has remained a useful axillary weapon. Unlike firearms, the Crossbow is almost completely silent. Also, since it uses arrows instead of bullets, it's shots can be loaded with things like explosives, incendiary devices and written letters.

Faction: Neutral Foreigner (Deutschland)

He also still has a chain mail underneath his vest.
Biography: Nikolae found some adventure in Japan and he should have just settled there after sticking the head of some criminals inside their own buddies' asses. But noooo, he apparently still wants to go around searching for ways to die, and he decided China needed help escape bandit incursions during the turmoil they have been going through. He is basically the same, except with a new rifle, acquired for a good price from the USA, but he still carries his loyal and everpresent sword.

Appearance + Background: A man with a steel rod up his back. He is around 174 cm tall, but his stiff pose makes him seem taller. His carefully trimmed mustache is straight as a ruler and in the shape of the character 冂. His black hair sits in a generic military haircut (of that age). He was born in a rich family and went to a school for generals, studying not only the classical Sun Tsu, the Four Books and the Three Texts of Confucianism, but the more modern books that trickled in with the Western menace, and was hand-picked by the Empress herself. He does not like anything against the will of the Imperial family, and anything unjust. However, the first virtue overrides the second one, evidenced by the fact that he is still in the army. I would think Naruto would be able to read, as it seemed the Shinobi all received education and reading would just be a fundamental feature of life to function.

Cannon Logic > Fanon

Though him learning via pictures made sense. Peasant populations learned a lot about religion through pictures, especially places where religion wasn't spoken in the vernacular.

HERE WE GOOO!

Name: Charley Dalarko
Gender: Male
Age: 31
Faction: Bandit (US)
Religion: Catholic
Appearance: A rugged-looking white man of average height, Charley oft wears a brown cloak and tattered hat, both riddles with holes, seemingly from either moths or stray bullets. Has green eyes, blonde hair, and a bit of stubble, giving him the wise, but young mentor look. Wears worn leather boots, and faded beige pants.
Biography: Born and raised in what is today known as Texas(Forgive me if I don't know my american history.), and had a good life. He was fed, he was taken care of, he was even taught how to fire a gun at age six. He was happy. But soon after he turned 15, his2 parents died while they were caught in the middle of a gunfight between the local sheriff and the local gang of bandits. His mind shifted horribly that day. At first, his instincts were to go home and try to forget, but he realized...he couldn't. He grabbed his parent's' wallet and purse, grabbed his fathers pistol and Bowie knife he used for protection, and jumped on the nearest horse, riding away as fast as possible. He grew attached to his new pal, and wandered the western US for years, stopping in little towns, buting a meal, and staying the night. But eventually, he just ran out of money, and decided to live off the land for a while. After spending years travelling the western plains, alone and with nothing but his horse, his knife, and his gun, he decided he wanted to settle down somewhere. He was tired of being alone. But he had, as previously stated, just his knife, his horse, and his gun. So he put them to good use. He made big bucks robbing the banks of towns he passed through, eventually making enough money to buy a home, and settle down with the woman of his dreams, a lovely bartender by the name of Lindsey McAdams. He loved his new life. But soon he realized, he liked the thrill of the fight even more. Having heard of the troubles China was having, and the potential war, from a frind in town, he hitched a long ride there, leaving his beloved wife beind, all in the name of justice. Or something else cheesy like that.

Looks good, I'll just wait for you to decide his faction.

Texas has been Texas for several decades by 1900s, so it's just Texas. :P Don't worry, foreign geography is hard. I saw in your profile that you lived in British Columbia and thought to myself, "Is that in South America or Europe?" Then I looked it.
WOOT AMERICAN EDUMACATION

Also, he has 6 -'s but only 5 +'s. That means he should get a + in agility, is that cool with you?

This seems to be shaping up to be an interesting bunch of characters. Are you going to push people together or have everyone go their own way? Because if the latter, my hat's off to you. Nine plotlines would be... interesting to manage.

Everyone on their own, as I did with Imperial Japan. I think a group consisting of Imperial Soldiers, Boxers, Bandits and Eight-Nation Soldiers would end badly.

Though I do imagine players will run across each other at various times, though what they do when they happen upon each other is up to them.

Whoops, just changed it. Thought there were only 11 stats, so we had to choose 5 (-) and 5 (+) and leave the last blank for no bonus. And I see where you would get South America and Europe. Lol.  :P

Bandit (US) is good.

Also, I'm just going to assume each character has a rudimentary knowledge of the Chinese language.

Filipina - term for female filipino. Though I prefer it being filipino woman instead, or essentially, just filipino (unless the speaker is using it in Tagalog) - this is based on what I've heard the dictionaries have given to it... you know, our history and all. Guess TCM shortened it but I'm ok with that, though I've never heard any non-Filipino use that. :P

Edit: sorry for bad quality though in biography. XD

I was wondering if our characters were going to be leading other men, like in your other RTD Blizzard Inferno?  Oh, and do you think most of the action will take place on land or will there be a chance of naval combat as well?

More part of a group than leading it, or going solo. This is more of a big war game than a survival one.

There will be less, but it will still occur. Naval combat was a much bigger part in Japan since it's islands, as opposed to China which only has ocean to it's south and east. Although there are a lot of rivers and ships on them.

I always miss RTDs. Waitlist incomiiiing.
Name: Jiangou Wang
Gender: Male
Age: 32
Faction: Bandit (Yeah, I know, a lotta people are choosing it, but Jiangou's a bit different.)
Religion: Christian (What he tells foreigners)
Religion: Buddhist (What he tells Chinese)
In reality what he believes shifts to whatever's best for him.
Appearance: Jiangou is an amicable-looking Chinese man approaching middle age, with a head of hair varying to match whatever is needed and expected. You can always expect though, that he will have a certain neat demanor around him. He has brown eyes, and he looks like he takes care of his appearance. He's usually found wearing fancy clothing.
Biography: Jiangou tells the foreigners that he grew up in a respectable Christian family, aiding the family trade of trading with the wonderful people that come from outside the country, and yes he is willing to trade lots of things with them, anything they need, and of course he's not associated with those... distasteful Boxeers. He tells the rebels that he worked from the ground up, having to struggle with the foreigners, but eventually reached a good trading career. He'll definitely advance the cause, yes! And... for those of you that are interested, he has a few deals to make... maybe even some opium if you ask.

In reality? Jiangou did work his way up from a poor family, though he always was and still is a lying scumball. He started off as a poor farmer's son, but when he came to age, left that family, that name, anything connecting him to them. He would make his own way in life. And so he did. He built a career from the ground, dealing whatever unsavory things people wanted when they wanted them, while still seeming a respectable trader- a facade he worked hard to keep up. The opium addiction, of course, gave him a huge opportunity- and so now does this rebellion.

Attributes: (Leave them blank except for + and - Attributes)

Agility
Perception
Toughness-

Story 1: Land of the East

"Here we go again."

Nikolae stepped off the boat and planted his feet in the Chinese harbor. The crowd behind him quickly shuffled passed him into the town, as Nikolae took China into view. Nikolae had heard about the beauty and exoticism in the great land of the Orient before. If those stories were true, what the hell happened? Telegraph poles and trash bins are scattered on throughout the streets. The buildings are of a Western-Romantic era style, a train and it's station are positioned to the northeast of the Prussian. Nikolae had seen Japan industrialized, but this was ridiculous, it felt like he was back in Europe!

Shrugging, Nikolae walked off the harbor, and stopped before crossing the street to let a marching regiment of Imperial Army pass him. Right behind them a large roofed wagon rolled past, but it was small and it had no horse. Nikolae realized this was a car! Times had change since he'd lived off of continental land, as cars, once just novel and for sport, were now used by as a practical source of transportation. Moving on, Nikolae took a breath of the air, and began his adventure in this new country.

Nikolae's armament contains a Winchester 1895, which he purchased for a good price off an American Merchant, to complement his old Wrustbalgr Longsword, a blade that's been kept and tested by Nikolae for many years now.

Had it been weeks or months now? It didn't matter. All Antonio knew was that it was good to be out of Spain, and now, out of Europe. There would be no way for anyone to track him now. Tacking winding paths and anonymously boarding trains, getting out of Spain was the hard part. Now it was just simply using his remaining money to hire rides until he reaches China. Currently, Antonio was riding in a private carriage to his final destination. All lawful lands are lawless lands when war breaks out. The bandit grins just thinking about the legends of China's hordes of gold, silver, bronze, jade, and jewels hidden all across the land. While musing about his future, the Spaniard falls asleep.....

Hours later, as mid-night turns to early morning, the Afghan driver wakes Antonio up. "We're arriving soon." Antonio yawns and stretches his arms before peeking out the carriage windowless door. The bandit questions, "Here? All I see are trees and mountains!" The driver adds, "Just a moment..."

The carriage makes a turn and there it is: a huge city bustling with people and animals, right in the distance. However, Antonio notes that the bricked style of the buildings of the city look Middle-Eastern, and he almost questions whether he's still in Afghanistan when the carriage passes by a sign in unmistakably Chinese script. Just short of a downwards path, the carriage stop. "We can't go any further," states the driver, "as the Chinese like to stop any foreign carriages and carts here since they could contain invaders. But it isn't far....and I'd like my payment please."

Antonio is holstering a Stattmacher, a prized Austrian-Hungarian gun he'd picked up in his looting. In a pouch on his side Antonio carries five Vasic Grenades, the earliest design of the true hand grenade that would be used even a century from now. They are heavier and produce less shrapnel then their modern counterparts, but explode to the same effect.

Henry had the authority right on his tail. It was pitch-black, but gunshots, horse-hoofs and dogs were sounding loudly behind him. He was racing down the steep hill, his gun empty and his knife missing. He ran forward for cover, but it turned out the open space in front of him was a concealed cliff face which he was at the bottom of. Henry turned around to see the police chief riding at him full speed, but not on a horse, but the top of a train. Just before it struck him, the train whistle blew...

Henry bolted awake in his seat. The other passengers gave him a second's look, before standing up and disregarding him. He looked out the train window. The landscape was a beautiful rolling valley. Outside there was the boarding platform, and past that a trading outpost combined with a small village. Henry made a small smile, there was no way anything in his past would no out of all places in the world, he'd end up here. He stepped out to start his new journey in this foreign land.

Henry is holstering a 1899 C Mauser Pistol, a classic German gun, and a Throatcutter, an English knife modeled after the American Bowie.

Chen woke up to the sounds of a collection of gongs. Stretching, Chen got up from his bunk and slipped on his military uniform. For him it consisted of a blue, robe-like two-piece wear for both his upper and lower body. He slips into a his pointed-toe black shoes and looks around. It seems that most of his comrades have awaken before he has. It's been three months since he had started training in Xin Lo, a village sympathetic to the boxers and that has allowed them to use it as a base. After seeing the economic downturn of china, Chen left to join the rebel cause. After washing up in the barrack common bathroom, Chen steps outside the barracks to survey the outlying area.

It's the same as usual. Near the fields in the center of the village, Boxers are already training and sparring in the field. The captain of the regiment barks out messages like, "The foreigners may have an infinite number of guns and cannons, but a thousand tons of gunpowder does not way more than a true man's fighting spirit!" Meanwhile, other Boxers are heading to the dining house to get their breakfast. Meanwhile, Chen sees high-ranking officials walking into the village library which now doubles as the commanding center of Boxers in the region. After taking this in, Chen now decides how to start his day....

Chen carries two weapons. One of them is his Yamo, a Qiang (spear) that starts as a basic wooden staff, but is sectioned off by a spiral spear-handle before ending with a pointed metal spearhead. His other is a Zhuge Crossbow, a common type of crossbow with repeating capabilities, allowing it to fire nearly as fast as a rifle.

Leia sat leaned her back on the railings of the steamboat as it sailed through the Chinese river. To start her career she'd need to report all interpreting findings in this mystic land to the west. However, as she brought her pen down on her journal, she could come up with nothing. Back in the Philippines, she'd manage to snag a ride on an American steamer carrying Filipino and American soldiers to assist in some great struggle in the Chinese mainland. Perhaps Leia would even see some action about how these Asian mainlanders carried out the ancient art of war. (One of their men even wrote a book on it!)

As her writer's block began to annoy her, the American ship thankfully docked on a port to the side of the river. Looking behind her, Leia could see the Americans had set up some sort of military town. There were small houses, which looked to have been taken from Chinese occupants, as well as small, "lemonade-stand" style shops where food and wares were being sold by mainly Chinese merchants. How interesting. The battalions of Alliance soldiers thundered into the town, and Leia followed behind them on the first step of her new experience.

Leia carries a sheath at her hip containing a Kampilan Sword, a hereditary sword Leia had received, it was an ancient weapon that dominated Filipino warfare with it's large size. In a shorter sheath Leia carried a Machete, a hacking and slashing tool important to many aspects of not only warfare, but daily life.

Kenshin had fought the Chinese before in Korea. And he was at it again as a veteran. He was stationed in a forest settlement, a town under Japanese and British control. The English had been a major influence in the Imperial Japanese war, and Kenshin found them an interesting bunch of people. They drank their tea not for inner peace and calming, but like it were a tonic that they would die if they didn't ingest it. They preferred thrusting swords unlike their French or German counterparts with their slashing blades. Strangest of all, to the system to personally know an Englishman was backwards; you had to approach him with discussion of politics, science, philosophy, religion or some other grand subject. After a few discussion, then you could finally discuss things like his family, his feelings and his tastes. Kenshin never could see how such a secretive group could have produced the jovial loud Americans.

For his task on-hand, Kenshin was assigned to patrol the forest for any sign of Muslim Braves, which had been rumored to be scouting the region. Although he would never admit it, Kenshin had a bit of both inner fear and lust for facing this enemy. They wore old-fashioned gear, similar to the Samurai of his own country. During the Shogunate-Imperial war when he was a child, Kenshin's uncle had been sliced to pieces by a Samurai, but he was too young to ever face them. But now was his chance, and they were like a futuristic Samurai, one who screamed like a warrior, but did it shooting at you with a rifle. Kenshin was eager to see any, excitedly stepping out of the forest village. There were caves, ditches, and streams which could all have Brave warriors about them. Now Kenshin decided on which ones to search....

Kenshin carries a Voile Sabre, a French sword he had obtained towards the end of his first campaign from a French arms dealer. In his holster has a Taurro Revolver, an Italian long-barreled six-shooter he bought just before being sent out to quell the Boxer rebellion.

Wang took the last sip of his noon tea. He was currently stationed at an encampment with his company in Northern China. The others milled about and bantered as they waited for the news to arrive. A messenger would give Wang and his men their first mission in the quest to fight for the empress. How anyone could oppose her Highness was above Wang's understanding, as the Empress and her court were the reason China had not fallen to pieces over her trials and tribulations in the past. But that was an arbitrary thought, Wang's duty was to fight for the empress no matter who her enemies may be.

In that sense, it wasn't the Boxers Wang was concerned about. You see a rebel, you kill him. It was the Eight Nation Alliance. In one area, the Imperial Army and the foreigners could be working together in a cooperative effort. Just a few villages over and they could be killing each other. Every foreigner had to given caution, no matter how helpful they initially seemed. Wang took another sip but remembered his cup was empty. He set it down.

After a few dull minutes, the stallion and his rider arrived. As the company gathered around, the young messenger declared: "The duty of company N-39 will be to clear the northern Jokpi Mountain Range! It is of the utmost importance that this area is safe of invasion." The group took in the information with mixed feelings. On one hand, mountain travel and fighting was difficult in mountains, one of the toughest terrain in China next to the desert and jungles. On the other hand, it would stop the monotony that crept in with staying at a quiet camp all day. The company leader, a graying mustached captain, saluted the messenger off. As he rode away he bellowed, "You heard him men. Gather any belongings you have and preparations you want to take, we're off in an hour."

Wang is armed with a Turkish Saber, the most famous and straight-forward of the sabers which trickled into China from the Middle East. While a majority of the soldiers of the Imperial Army used rifles, Wang carried around a Musket. While rifles were faster to shoot and could hit farther away, anyone hit with a musket ball, even just the arm or leg, would be out of the fight and crippled, and dead if not healed quickly.

((Can I has meeting with Tiruin?))

Nikolae had a slight smile as he strolled down the streets. He wanted to relax a little after so much time inside that boat...Memories of the time when he landed on Japan were also there, hidden amidst the years that had passed since then. He chuckled and supressed a tear as those images came back to him. Good times those were, of immaculate youth and joy.

The now mature, confident man wasn't exactly an elder, but he was already getting older by the moment, and he still didn't have any heirs. He stroked his chin, which now sported a manly - albeit carefully trimmed - beard, as he walked. He could use some rest and a good cup of tea or coffee. Nikolae now had far more money due to his adventures in Japan, and no more going around penniless.

Get into a cafeteria or similar and check the menu, buying some coffee if there is enough local currency for it on pocket.

Charley looks around. He appears to be in a market. He lifts the brim of his hat, allowing a wider field of vision. It's....particularly un-crowded for a Chinese market. He smirks at his fortune, pulling down the brim of his hat and fondling the handle of his pistol. He steps out of the large, yellow archway he was awkwardly idling in for some time, and into the depths of the market.

It appears he was wrong. it just LOOKED desolate. Inside the market, it was busier than a hive of bees. And louder than being inside one. People were rushing everywhere, pushing him left and right, eventually pushing him in front of a single stall. Selling...books. He takes out a few gold pieces from a pocket, and hands them to the young girl behind the counter.

"I'll take a English to Mandarin guidebook and...Your favourite book out of those."

Once the books are collected, search the market for other useful things.

Henry heads off in the direction of the trading post/village. On the way, he'd check his wallet for any money.
(Assuming I start with a wallet)

While walking, Henry tried to recall his dream. It was something about a train, and a policeman... He couldn't remember anything else, though.

"Bloody 'ell..."

This was not the start of his strange dreams. In fact, he'd been having them since he decided to move to China. Was it a sign? He didn't really think so. He was sure that if his god did have something to tell him, he'd tell him directly, and not through all these strange dreams.

Morning comes, and the sounds of boots thundered in its wake. West or East, colored or not, the factions of belief and freedom fought...

"Oh goodness...I'm being poetic again. I'd better edit this later." Leia mused to herself as she tucked her notebook back. Looking around, she could feel the heat of the day, as well as smell the dry scent of the marketplace and the dockside - mostly reminding her of her life back in the farmlands at home...Peaceful, and serene, though the odors of the animals took some time to get used to, of course.

She nodded to a passing Filipino, smiling at him as the soldier marched off with his squad. Men clad in cloth and wielding rifles and machetes for everyday use, the latter being called bolos where she came from...It was still nice to have a piece of home with her, looking at her sword.

Still, it was wasteful to just enjoy the scenery without taking part in it yourself. The stores and their wares looked appealing, and the merchandise too. With the money she had, perhaps it was time to find some lodgings in a pro-foreign area, and perhaps get food alongside it.

"Welcome to China indeed."

Inquire on the state of affairs from the locals, using Mandarin > English in phonetic priority, and probably inquire where I could acquire lodging for the coming nights. Where the soldiers are heading, too.

Story 2: Orient Orientation
By the way everyone, all characters start out with 50 Yuan. A 1 Yuan = 1 U.S. Dollar. Sorry if you're character would be carrying more money, but you can always have a back-story to how they lost/misplaced/were robbed of it. :P

Nikolae walks into the Chinese town, reminiscing nostalgically on the glorious days of Japan. However, those days had passed as Japan reestablished itself into a modern country, returning to it's quiet island demeanor. Although Nikolae aged, he still had a thirst for travel and a need for adventure, and that led him into China. Before his quest started, Nikolae thought he could use a warm drink. Nikolae finds a common food stand on the side of the street, selling basic staples from sandwiches to alcohol. Seeing that coffee costs two yuan, he hands the woman at the counter two bills, and she gives him a cup of the drink.

Nikolae put the drink to his lips and let the hot liquid pour into his system. As he drank more, he felt the caffeine start to reinvigorate his system. He watches the people, horses, and occasional car move down the long street. As Nikolae finishes the drink and hands it back to the stand owner, he witnesses a file of ragged look men connected by ankle chains being herded down the street, with soldiers casually pointing rifles behind them.

The driver hesitates. He was looking for a good profit, but also wanted to live. He did have a gun in the back of his carriage, but he knew his passenger would be able to start firing before he could dive back there. Eventually, the driver took more value of his life than his wealth. He turned his carriage around and trotted back in the opposite direction, muttering something about never trusting Spaniards.

Antonio looked at the large city in front of him. He'd have to use the environment and context to figure out where he was. This would take a lot of thinking and guessing, perhaps finding a local or a clue to help him find where he was....And then found a sign that says, 'City of Kashgar'.

Henry ponders his dreams as he walks into the village outpost. At the forefront is a cluttered marketplace of Europeans bargaining at Chinese stalls, and Chinese bargaining at European stalls. Everything from furs to statuettes to pornography was being traded for. Henry quickly checked his wallet to find he still had 50 Yuan tucked away.

In addition to the stores there was a large, wooden West American styled General Store, towering over all of the small stalls. Next to the general store was a small pub.

Chen proceeded into the dining hall to eat. Inside there were three long tables with chairs, and at the end, a large circular table with breakfast. Chen went to the later table first to pick up some bread, a few dumplings and some tea, a standard soldier breakfast. He took a free seat in between a chatting group of other soldiers who where discussing some matters intently. As he went down on his food, Chen heard the following from various soldiers: "...but the Imperial Army could be valuable allies! They are all Chinese, what do they have to gain from fighting us?" "Money comrade, the vanity that drives all that is unholy." "Well, the Eight Nations are the unholiest places on this Earth, and they could corrupt the royal family, especially in this time of great hardship!"

As the debate continues Chen finishes his breakfast, and the commander from the field opens the door and sets in. He bellows, "Everyone grab your arms and come into the field immediately! It is time for your first quest!"

Eventually, she finds an old bearded man to comment on the situation. "The Empress sent the Imperial Army to fight the rebels who are fighting the foreigners. Or was it to help the rebels?" He scratches his beard. "They change whether they fight rebels or help them everyday. That's all I know." When asked about lodging he says, "There's an pub with rooms, just take the left fork in the road and you'll see it. Where are those soldiers going? To the west most likely, I'd say."

After a brief admiration at the natural beauty of the forest, Kenshin resumed his duty of patrol. He walked into the woods, taking his Saber out of it's sheath. He looks actively for bandits.

Wang readied his gear to prepare for the sweeping of the Jokpi range. After an hour, the fifty-odd Imperial footsoldiers marched northwards.....

The company soon reached the steep mountain range. The mountains had a gradual incline to them, and near the peaks Wang could see the snow-capped tops. The captain of the group gave an order: "I want everyone split into five groups with the men nearest to you, each taking a different path up the mountain. I'll stay with my guard here, everyone climb for two hours and report back to me!" With some quick shuffling, Wang separated off into a group and proceeded up the mountain face.....

There was little talking, as most of the group's energy was spent grunting and trudging up the step slope. Occasionally someone would kick a stone past them and it would tumble off the mountain, and it's impact would not be heard for a while. Wang sighed, this minion work is not what he was cut out for. Finally, sweaty and tired, the group made it to a plateau. After a brief rest, one of them pointed out, "Hey, what's that?" He pointed to a building on the far end of the plateau. The group slowly approached it. It was a Christian Church, high and mighty, along with a decently-sized graveyard and shed out front. The inexperienced youthful soldiers react uncertainly, looking up to the older Wang for advice on moving forward.

Charley wades his way through the mass of the Beijing marketplace. The crowd jostles him at a small book stall, where a teenage girl looks up at him. He browses through the wares before throwing 15 Yuan onto the counter. "An English to Mandarin Guidebook...and your favorite book." She slides over a copy of "The Official English to Chinese Mandarin Translation Guide". She also gives Charley a paper-back book with Chinese characters on the front. He can't read the title yet, but he sees it has pictures of three differently colored kingdoms on the cover.

Charley bows his head and goes to search throughout the marketplace. There's a staggering amount of stalls, many more than he'd ever seen in America. They offer food, clothing, supplies, weapons, armor, jewels, and other miscellaneous items, both of foreign and native make.

Nikolae rose his eyebrows and turned to the stand owner, trying to see if there was something amiss in the scene. "Who are those? Common prisonera, as in bandits, or something different?" he asked curiously.

If there was something he apparently hadn't left his system, it was his habit of asking questions. Although that hadn't helped him with the japanese criminals.

A sense of excitement begins to rise up in Kenshin as he examines his find.  Glancing back and forth at the cave and the boot tracks, Kenshin weighs his options.
Try to determine how many men could be in the cave from the boot tracks, and then slowly approach the cave with sword and revolver at the ready.  If there only seem to be a few men from the tracks then I enter the cave in search of the bandits.  If I appear to be greatly outnumbered then I will rush back to town as fast as possible, request reinforcements and return to the cave

"Nnh, a port town isn't a good place to start, no offense," Leia said, thinking aloud to nobody in particular as she erased another line from her notebook, checking the many drafts inside and re-editing them. Nobody was around to mind, but on force of habit she added the last.

"Now a soldier's story, that's where I should head along. They'll probably be heading towards the front, or the nearest supply base if I'm lucky. Nothing better than hearing from the first line servicemen of the land, and making sure they're remembered."

"Salamat po-err, sorry. Xie xie!" she said, looking to the bearded man who helped her before heading off.

Ask if I could follow the soldiers - from who seemed to be their commanding officer. Where they were headed, and if I could tag along as a civilian journalist.

If I can't, then head in where the nearest supply town was after asking the soldiers.

Story 3: He Dead

Nikolae curiously asked the stand-owner about the men he sees in chains. The owner replies, "They are prisoners of war, most likely the Boxer rebels. They have been terrorizing our country-side as of lately, killing priests and raping women. The empress has sent a force to stop them though."

The prisoners are stopped in the middle of the city, a bit away, with a crowd gathered around them, though Nikolae can still make out what is happening. The men are lined up, an official standing behind them and another man drawing a saber. He yells for the a prisoner to kneel and bow his head. The man obeys silently. The saber man then yells and slashes his sword down onto the back of the man's neck, decapitating him. This happens for the rest of the men, except for the final one. When asked to kneel, he doesn't comply. The officer then pulls out his pistol and shoots him twice in the back of the head, and he falls to the ground. The bodies and heads are thrown into a wooden cart as the crowd disperses back into its usual business.

He passes people, donkeys and oxen on his way to the bazaar. When he finally reaches the crowded area he looks around and listens for anything that could be understocked. He overhears this coming from two men leaning against a wall:

"So, where the hell are the spices? I've been waiting days-"
"Listen, there's some caravans coming in from the trails to the West. They'll be here soon, just be patient."

Henry stepped into the bar for a drink. As he sat down, a fight broke out between two groups of men on the other side of the room. Guns were drawn and fired. Henry took a stray shot to the head, and died immediately and anti-climatically, his hands still clutched around his glass.

Chen grabs his equipment and joins his brethren as they charge onto the field, discussing what this first item may involve. The company rushes out into the open field, where their leader stands before them. "Brothers, I come to you with the first assignment to benefit the Society of Harmony! The foreign devils are encamped at a river not too far from here. We will set out in just a few hours. The plan is to rush them while they are sleeping, first with our melee troops, then fire upon them, and finally send in our cavalry. Do not underestimate our foes, they are French and hold devastating artillery. Make sure they do not have the opportunity to use it."

As a holder of different weapons, Chen could decide to go either with the melee unit or the ranged unit.

Stepping right next to him as his steed trotted underneath him, Leia introduces herself and asks if she can accompany his unit as a civilian journalist. "Why of course dear!" The young, fit commander eagerly accepts, his cowboy hat and curled bright mustache making as much of an impression on her as his Deep South 'Sweet Home Alabama' American accent. The ground and trees near them are riddled with shots, but they do not suffer any real injuries. The group attempts a suppressing fire back at the church, (4 vs. 1) and Wang hears bodies falling and men screaming out. Suddenly, a few men spring from the graveyard and charge the Imperialists with swords.

Charley goes through the market to find a weapons stall. He finds some traditional Chinese ones, and those are cool, but the weaponry is too exotic and unfamiliar to be of practical use for him right now. It's bright and bombastic like a good weapons dealer back in the U.S. It's table and shelves are stocked with guns, knives, explosives, traps, and even a couple machine guns near the back. The owner, a big-chested Chinese man dressed up in classic outdoors workman clothes approaches Charley. In a stunningly American accent he asked, "Find anything you like?"

She could feel a slight blush on her face, and remember how the Americans had their own unique style of respect and formality to others - intriguing, and mostly delightful to see it firsthand - and...preferably, notice their sternness and sincerity in doing so.

Looking at the troop, and returning her gaze to the officer, she replied. "Where are you all headed, sir? To the front lines, or to any neighboring town?"

Inquire as to their destined location, and follow along instead! If I could, ask about any places of importance along the way, including the Officer's troops and their status.

Story 4: Battlecries

"Killing and raping, really? I'll probably check on that, but anyway...I suppose this place doesn't have any criminal organization around here I can get in trouble with just by staring at them weird, right?"

"Actually, crime has been going up ever since the war started, since the army and police are busy taking care of rebels and foreigners. You won't get them to kill you by looking at them, since many of them like to ambush their prey. There are highway men who patrol the roads and spring out on passing caravans. And then there are those in the forest and mountains who pounce on unsuspecting victims. Everyone, especially tradespeople, have to have some form of protection nowadays. Even for me..." The standkeeper pulls out a butchering knife. "I thought I'd only use this to ever cut animal flesh for sandwiches, but these days you never know..."

Antonio realizes his opportunity to strike, but a partner would be suitable for this mission. He ventures further into the city, getting into the slums, a breeding ground from criminals. There is debris and trash on the street, and the buildings are of less quality than those back around the market. Antonio sees people shuffling into an opium den, and follows behind them. The interior is lavish although the air is thick with smoke, and unconscious men lay all across the floor. It looks like an expensive tea house, if you replace tea with hard drug. Searching for a candidate, Antonio walks into a scraggly but tough looking young Chinese teen. "Hey boy, I'm about to place a hit. You want in?" "Sure, how about 40%-60%, in your favor?" Simple enough.

Chen pulls sheaths his spear and brings out his crossbow as he goes to join the ranged division, made up of archer and gunners. Making sure he is supplied and ready, Chen marches out onto the dirt path to his objective....

A few hours later, around twilight, the Boxer army hangs over the French encampment, looking down at them from a hill. The Frenchmen are busy relaxing after a long day of whatever they have been assigned to. A few guards patrol their outside ranks. The missile units remain at the top of the hill, while the cavalry stay in the rear and the melee units sneak down to the river.

In minutes, Chen hears a battle roar as a league of men swarm to the right side of the camp. The alerted sentry starts firing at them and manages to take one of the men down, but is quickly overran and cut down in the swarm of men. The rest of the Frenchmen sprint to their weapons, but some are hacked and stabbed before they reach guns or swords. As the true fighting commences, the leader of the missile unit signals for his men to begin to fire.

"More of the later Miss, we're going to help protect some good Christian towns from those nasty rebels. Nothing like protecting tha' flock of Jesus." Intrigued, Leia asks about Brimstone's soldier. "I have the 16th Mixed Filipino-American Regiment. These men are all experienced jungle fighters, so this ain't anything new to em'. Would you like a ride?" Brimstone gestures to the back of his steed.

Kenshin ruffles through the belongings of these cave dwellers. Based on the markings and symbols he finds, it looks like these men are some sort of bandit gang, and there should be about 5 or so now based on his findings. Satisfied and ready to prepare an ambush, Kenshin lurks further into the damp space and finds a nice warm pocket in between some rocks. Loading his revolver and gripping his sabre, he waits for the return of the men. From his position, he can still see about half of the room.

A few minutes later, Kenshin hears footsteps. He hears men talking and sees some masked figures step into the room. A couple lay on the blankets. One prepares food, and two others sit down, their backs to Kenshin, and ruffles through some bags. He begins to comprehend their conversation:
"...and then he tries pulling his pistol on me!"
"You're lucky I saved you this time, grabbed the bastard before he shot you dead. You owe me some of your find." He snatches a few coins from the other bandit.
"What?! That's not...okay, I guess it is." They go back to ruffling through the bags.

Wang yells out, "We're being attacked!" He hears his own army respond in the distance, though it would be a number of minutes before he could be reinforced. His unit would have to hold out on their own for now. As the rebel Swordsmen charge Wang, he drops to the ground, propping his musket up from a prone position, and fires upon them. (3+1 vs. 6) Wang fires a shot, but his target ducks and stumbles as the musket ball misses him by a few inches. Wang's division hurriedly fires upon them also (5 vs. 2) and manages to incapacitate two of them with rifle fire. The remaining swordsman charges Wang, who only gets to a crouching position before the charging man swings her sword at him. (3 vs. 1) The blade nicks the side of Wang's face, and he can feel warm blood trickling down his cheek, though no major damage was done. (4 vs. 6) Wang stands up while simultaneously swinging diagonally-upwards at the rebel with his Saber, but the rebel jumps back.

Before the rebel can slash Wang again, the Imperial men fire (6 vs. 3) and shoot the rebel multiple times in the chest. "Are you alright Sir Tsaongpa?" asks one of the men. Still, more shots are fired from the church (3 vs. 1) and one of Wang's men cries out as he is shot in the leg. The uninjured men fire into the Western structure (2 vs. 2) but fail to hit any people.

Wang's Unit: 6 (1 Injured)

Charley looks at the remaining money left in his wallet before turning back to the man running the stand. "Anything for under 35 Yuan?" The man nods. "Perhaps not a pistol or rifle, but some auxiliary tools to help you on your travels." He bends down under his stand to retrieve a set of small knives and puts them on the counter. "Throwing knives, silent and effective. 10 Yuan for a set of 3. For 10, you can also get," he bends back down and puts a red stick of plastic onto the counter, "one stick of dynamite. Explosive stuff, clears out debris in your way or anything you want after you put a fuse. If you have 25 Yuan to spare," he heads to the shelf and pulls out a thick rope, "there's a lasso. Wrangles everything from cattle to horses."

"So, do you have any assignment I could help with?" Nikolae asked, stretching and sighing. "I'd rather have something to keep me busy until I decide what I should be doing here, and I already worked as a bodyguard before." The shopkeeper shakes his head. "Nothing that I need right now. But you look the dueling type, and I heard that there's a tournament going on at the stadium. It's right over there if you are interested." He points to a dome-shaped building in the distance.

Antonio and the boy head out of town to ambush the spice caravan, traveling the western road. As the sun sets down in the sky after a few miles of travel, Antonio and the boy go a few meters offroads into some bushes where they watch the road. Sure enough, the jumbling caravan comes rolling into view. There's four horses on the front, and the carriage is an elaborate red and gold affair, with a driver. Antonio can see that a few people are inside the carriage, and that there are crates lodged in the back. As it comes nearer to their position, the Chinese boy pulls a knife out of his pocket and clutches it.

Chen is repulsed by the vicious combat, but he does what he needs to. He looks down the middle of his crossbow and aims towards the French liens down below. (5 vs. 4) Chen tugs on the crossbow lever to fire the first bolt, and then repeats to fire a succession of shots. He sees his bolts fly into the French lines, wounding soldiers, occasionally on a mortal scale. The rest of the missile troop fires (3 vs. 5) but fails to repeat Chen's success.

The melee group hacks into the French (5 vs. 6) taking down some, but the French are able to form a circle to defend themselves. (6 vs. 3) The French keep the Boxer units away, stabbing those who come too close on bayonets or swords. As the going gets rough, the cavalry charges in from the shadows, appearing out of nowhere with the element of surprise and shock on their side. (5+1 vs. 4) The horses barrel through the French men who don't expect it and are instantly run through with spears. The few French men that ran for the machine guns are slain by the horse warriors.

"As you wish, milady." At this point Leia began asking about Captain Brimstone's soldiers. "Well, they're fresh out of the islands and most of em' have had some experience fighting the Spaniards back in the day. They've got all their own little tales to spin bout'. There's Charles, who lost an arm and continued to keep fightin', Little Barro once snuck into a whole camp undetected to go still some supplies for us, and there's Big Hermano who has killed 16 men with just his knife. Kenshin breathes heavily as he prepares himself to ambush these men, gripping his right hand around his Sabre and his left around his gun. After a few moments and a brief prayer, Kenshin screams a war cry and runs out of nowhere from the cave. The men all jump, some of the ones on the ground falling over. Kenshin runs at the man preparing food with his sabre out tip-first (3+1(Ambushed) vs. 5) but the man falls flat on the ground, allowing the blade to pass right by him and pierce the food pot instead. Kenshin stabs into the pot and pulls his blade back out, the hole in the pot sending boiling water all over the floor. Kenshin sees the bandits who were sitting down begin to stand up, and before they fully come to their feet Kenshin points his revolver at them and begins firing. (1 vs. 4) Kenshin fires shots around the men as they stand up, but none connect. As he fires, the bandit whom Kenshin tried to stab leaps up and tackles Kenshin (3 vs. 1) bringing both of them to the ground. (4+1 vs. 2) The bandit raises his hand to strike at Kenshin, but Kenshin hits him with the flat side of his saber, and the bandit flies off of him, clutching his wounded head in pain. Kenshin stands up, and at this point the bandits have had enough time to draw a couple guns and a sword, but mainly knives.

Wang stamps out orders and a couple soldiers jump into the trees nearby to scavenge for sticks. Meanwhile, both sides return occasional fire, none of it getting close to hitting anyone. Eventually, the two soldiers run back into the fray with their makeshift torches of tree wood. They charge the church, pulling their arms back to prepare for a throw, (1 vs. 5) but their sticks have the misfortune of colliding in mid-air and falling between the church and Wang's division. The fires light the grass and soon a thick cloud of smoke blocks the view of both sides from each other. (2-1 vs. 1) Wang's troops fire into the church, but don't seem to hit anything through the smoke. The rebels return fire, and a soldier comments "Well at least they can't hit us through this-" (5-1 vs. 1) the cocky soldier is struck in the head by a rifle bullet and dies instantly, the first fatality of Wang's unit. Another bullet comes flying through and hits another one of Wang's soldiers, hitting him in the arm and causing him to drop his weapon.

Akio delves into the port city, looking for some temporary work. After a bit of poking around, he comes to a board surrounded by mercenaries. Looks like this is what he wants.

The boards lists different categories of jobs. The first is bounty hunting, and it seems in China you have to take some form of identification off of your target when you kill them, such as something precious that they would hold onto, or their decapitated head. Another type of job is clearing out the dangerous animals terrorizing the surrounding populace. The last are not job descriptions, but addresses where any takers can be given private, usually personal assignments.

Choosing specific soldiers, eh? Leia mused as she moved along the men. She was glad that none of them cast her any...unbecoming looks, all disciplined and stoic as so.

Though it could be my sword...

The journeyman shrugged as she decided to go along with the officer's idea of taking a story from the specific people. Only after this one would she begin talking with the younger, and less identified troops.

And then, the destination hopefully. It would be good to pass and aid their time with talk.

Talk with Charles - how he keeps up with being an amputee, shouldn't he get a service leave with honors for that? Also, keep the morale of the people up! Document and ensure these people will be remembered.

"Ohh, dueling. Reminds me of my younger years. Well, I always get in trouble anyway. Fighting in an official tournament is a better idea than going around until bad luck finds me." Nikolae bids farewell to the shopkeeper to head up to the dome. He steps into the arena, and starts wading to the crowd. He comes to a man behind a table. "You want to try your luck in the next match? 12 Yuan is the entry fee. First match is a 32-man free for all. The 16 left standing advance to one-on-one duels goes on from there. Third place, runner-up and champion are all awarded. No killing or permanent damage. Victory is based when your opponents are incapacitated or surrender. We supply wooden replacements for your weapons, and we even have blunted arrows for your bows and small pellets for firearms. Any questions?"

(6 vs. 2) The melee Boxers continues hacking and stabbing through the French crowd. (3 vs. 6) The cavalry make another attempt to charge, but the French have loaded their guns up and are prepared. I can't fire rifles anymore, but my bolo swing is as good as it's ever been." Leia declares to all the soldiers that their works will be published and documented for the future. They don't appear as exhilarated as she'd expected, as if there is an air of fatigue about them.

This makes Kenshin's job easier, and he grips his Sabre and charges the bandits. (4 vs. 6) He slashes at one man with a knife, who manages to dodge. Pay entrance fee, enter competition.

"You're up, Barro." Leia whispered to herself as she stowed away her notebook and writing implement, ready to get her notes firsthand - through memory.

Begin questioning Barro on the enemy, what kind of story he has waiting, and possibly, what he thinks about home, and if he has any worries.

Also, ask on how he infiltrated an enemy camp. Alone?

Story 7: Interview
(I'm skipping Flintus's turn, but not killing his character off yet, I just think you all deserve a turn for waiting for so long.

"No further questions at all. I want to join this lovely competition." Nikolai affirmed, giving the man the required entrance fee. The man holds out a box and Nikolai puts in 12 Yuan worth of coins. "Very well, proceed inside to Room 9." Nikolai follows the instructions and proceeds into the a special duelist-only entrance to the doom, where he comes to a circular hall. He encircles it until he reaches the room labeled as the ninth. He steps in, and two formally dressed teenage boys are inside. One relieves him of his weapons, placing them carefully on a table and he is handed a Pellet Rifle and a Wooden Longsword.

After a few minutes of waiting, a horn bellows and the boys motion for him to enter the arena through a clear door. Nikolae steps outside and looks around, to see 15 other men all standing at even intervals away in the stadium-sized arena. Everything is plain, the ground is simply sand, but there is a section of what looks like rocky ruins in the center of the arena. The crowd cheers, and some of the constants charge straight for the ruined area.

Antonio holds his rifle steady and walks up to the door, swinging it open carefully and then pointing his gun to the inside. He finds there are 3 people inside; two men, one older and heavier, the other younger and thinner, and a middle-aged woman. They freeze in place. Antonio hears his companion searching through stuff in the back of the carriage.

Spoiler: Antonio Fernandez (click to show/hide)

Revulsion of the events before him makes Chen freeze for a moment, unable to fire upon the enemy.

Spoiler: Chen Yu (Zijin) (click to show/hide)

As the camp is set up for the night, Leia asks Barro if he can be interviewed. "Sure." He pats a wooden seat near him, prompting her to sit down on it. She sits and first asks him about the enemy. "Well, we're fighting these Chinese peasants called the Boxers. They hide in the mountains and forest then charge us with swords and spears. They're barbaric, but luckily Captain Brimstone has trained us to take care of them." Leia asks him for the story he wants to have, and for what he thinks about his home; he shrugs. "All I want is for the war to end so I can take my earnings and take my family to start a business in Manilla." She asks if he has any worries. He drops to a whisper. "I trust Captain Brimstone with my life, but sometimes when I am going to sleep I fear a raid by the Boxer warriors." Finally she asks him how she was able to sneak into a camp. He pulls out his bolo knife. "I went in with this, and I hid in the bushes and behind crates. When a man would come bye I would stab him in the back or the neck.....I almost died too."

It was at this point that Brimstone walked over to the interview, interrupting it with a steaming bowl of broth. "Evenin' Miss Leia, care for some grub?" He held the bowl towards her.

Kenshin drops his revolver and in steads grabs at the collar of the man on the ground. (5 vs. 4) The bandit resits, but Kenshin is still able to pull him up to his feet, and still in his grip. (5 vs. 2) Kenshin then easily throws the man into the bandits on the other side of the room. The flying body of their comrade trips them up, causes them to stagger and disperse. This makes Kenshin's job easier, and he grips his Sabre and charges the bandits. (4 vs. 6) He slashes at one man with a knife, who manages to dodge. (3 vs. 2) He takes his knife and manages to slash Kenshin in the side of his chest. It does not hit anything vital nor is it deep, but the wound starts bleeding.

Kenshin is cut and responds to this by gripping his Sabre and slashing at the bandit. (4+1 vs. 3) Kenshin slashes the man giving him a deep cut across his shoulder, causing him to drop his sword. As he is stunned, Kenshin kicks him and sends him tumbling back into the cave. After this, Kenshin fires his Taurro revolver at the bandits piled together in a mess at the other point of the room. (1 vs. 6) His gun jams, and they are able to get to their feet.

Spoiler: Kenshin Gato (click to show/hide)

Wang falls back and observes the enemy, questioning himself over the current situation. While the army division did split up, they did not discuss a rally point. Hmmph, perhaps they should take more care not to rush these things. The Heretics do not seem like bandits nor Westerns. Based on their style of dress, he indicates them as Nationalistic Boxer Rebels, currently the most-powerful anti-Empire force in Asia. Though what traditional people would be doing in a church is beyond him right now. Finally, the ones that are outside are hiding behind gravestones which puts them at the equivalent of hiding behind tree stumps. However, the ones farther back inside the church seem to have it pretty well defended with improvised defenses.

Wang's unit fires into the gravestone area. (1 vs. 2) They hit the gravestones but not the ones with rebels behind them. (3 vs. 6) There are a confirmed two rebels in the graveyard, and both return small arms fire but fail to hit any of Wang's men. Both of them run back to the church, (1 vs. 6) and easily avoid any shots aimed at them. They run inside the tall church door and slam it shut.

Antonio grins like a loon, and steps outside before closing the door carefully. He then takes one of his grenades and ties it to the door in such a way that it will explode if the door is opened. After the boy has taken the goods and the horses, Antonio sets fire to the bottom of the carriage.

"How about we make a bet, boy? I'll wager half of my profits from this job that none of them have the guts to open the door before they burn to death."

Leia smiled as the Captain offered her food. "Thank you sir," she said, putting away her notebook and taking in the nice meal. It was sort of cold, not displeasing, but delightful in its own special way. As she ate, she wondered more about the Boxers...What was their purpose?

"Say, these Boxers aren't some kind of anarchist movement, or a rebellious group, are they? I mean, peasants in this kind of revolt must say something about the current regime - why they're called boxers, too? Is there anything wrong with the area that they're bringing in foreign aid?

"Also, thanks Barro."

Engage in intellectual chatter! Also, ask more about these Boxers. Why were they called such? And how can swords and spears beat ranged weaponry?

Story 8: Football Tackles

"I suddenly feel like I'm twelve years younger!" Nikolai thinks to himself as he runs for the ruins, avoiding the arrows, pellets and charges of the other combatants. It seems that within the first minute a number of them had already gone down. Getting his senses, Nikolae looks for a place to hide. (3-1) He hides behind a ruin wall, only for it to crumble before him. Huh. This leaves Nikolae right in front of another combatant. They stare at each other.

(1 vs. 2) He ends up bringing Antonio back onto the ground, and on top. (3 vs. 3) He wrestles with the man. The Chinese boy hears the noise. "What's going on?"

Leia graciously accepts her broth and thinks about the Boxers as she eats. When she finishes the bowl, she turns back to Barro. "Say, these Boxers aren't some kind of anarchist movement, or a rebellious group, are they? I mean, peasants in this kind of revolt must say something about the current regime - why they're called boxers, too? Is there anything wrong with the area that they're bringing in foreign aid? Also, thanks Barro."

"You're welcome. Well, yes, they are rebels. Rebelling against their empire. They're called Boxers because they have this whole system of fighting with their fists and feet, like the boxers in America. But for them it's more, almost like a religion. Yes, they're causing problems. Attacking foreigners, merchants, Christians. Anyone who isn't on their list is being slaughtered, women, priests and children included."

"How are their swords and spears beating your guns?"

"Oh, they have their guns too. They switch out: close up they use blades, and when they run away they switch to guns. Tricky bastards, you need a lot of good tactics to beat them."

I'm the worst.  :(
Staring in silence at the chaos below Chen suddenly doubles over and throws up into the dirt in front of him. With the stench of death now fresh in his nostrils and the screams echoing in his mind the last thing he wants is to look up. However the call of a commanding officer quickly snaps the young man back to reality and he takes a deep breath and readies his crossbow.

He then continues to watch the carnage unfold below, allowing what little training he has had to take over as he repeatedly reloads and fires at the few remaining French soldiers.

"Aren't normal soldiers equipped with a blade for melee combat? A bayonet - am I right?"

Leia was curious. How could rebels achieve such a level of mastery in warfare - either they're using common sense in a tactical manner, or have military sympathizers.

"Who leads the Boxers - as in do they have any sort of connection with the military?"

Inquire some more, and if possible, ask if I could pitch my tent along with the soldier's tents - away from the general camp site of course.

"This is awkward. Well." Nikolai breaks the ice with a sword sweep to the legs, (5 vs. 3) sending the target to the ground. (4 vs. 5) Nikolai tries kicking the boy's sword away, but he keeps hold of it. (4-1(awkward striking position) vs. 1) Nikolai feels a stinging pain in his right leg as his enemy hits him in the ankle. "That's not very nice." (1 vs. 6) Nikolai trips over his feet and falls on the ground himself. (6 vs. 6) The boy swings at him again, but manages to just hit Nikolae in the shoes. (6 vs. 3) Nikolae gives the boy a good couple kicks in the ribs. He drops his sword and rolls onto his side, moaning. Nikolae stands up, and sees that several other combatants have also fallen by this point.

Antonio wrestles with the boy struggling for the upper hand. During the conflict, the boy accidentally starts the wick on one of the grenades. "OH FU-" *Boom*

And thus Antonio Fernandez's journey came to a quick close.

((Just going to finish this up.))

After spilling his lunch onto the grass, Chen's sense of duty flares up and forces him to finish shooting into the remaining Frenchmen. Within minutes, the overwhelming Boxer forces crush the westerners, all of them letting out a victory cry.

Chen, dazed and disoriented, sits down. The leader of the ranged forces walks up to him. "Zijin, you don't look so good. What's wrong?"

Leia asks about the presence of bayonets. Barro responds, "We don't have many rifles in the group. Besides, we're more comfortable with our bolos." Leia asks about the leadership of the Boxers. "They have some people from the army who have fought previously, but no one too high up. A lot of their leaders are local religious men, administrators, chiefs, that sort of thing."

As Brimstone passes by again, Leia asks to pitch her tent. "You don't want to sleep here? But by all means, do as you wish."

Kenshin yells at the bandits before readying his sword for the knife attack. (2 vs. 2+1) Kenshin blocks it, (5 vs. 4) and slashes the man across the arm! The bandit drops his knife. (6 vs. 4) Kenshin slashes the surprised bandit along the gut, spraying blood on the floor! He falls, (6 vs. 4) and Kenshin slashes another bandit through the legs!

(6 vs. 5) Wang fires a musket shot himself, and if he is correct he has hit someone in the arm.

It looks as if the waiting has paid off, as Wang see's one of the other Imperialist groups march up his position. The new unit sees that a firefight has commenced as they too take shooting positions. The captain of their troop speaks to him, "What's the situation?"

Saying nothing more, he decides to wait and see.

Wait until there are even fewer combatants, preferentially only two.

((My bad.))
((Also, calling Skyru in. Sorry!))

Don't want to sleep- by all means?

Leia was puzzled at the Captain's remark - perhaps she had gotten the wording or how he said it wrong? Nevertheless, she didn't get what he was trying to say and pitched her tent anyway.

I want to pitch my tent...therefore I don't want to sleep here? Ok, where was here and-

She looked at the Captain, trying to discern his intentions before talking, and probably sleeping after bidding him a good night.

"I'm content with sleeping among your men, Captain Brimstone Sir, and...probably much better this way." she said with a smile.

Story 10: Manchurian Desert

"Well, I suppose letting them wear themselves out..." Nikolae thinks as he sees more combatants fall. He sticks to the shadows of the ruins to employ his strategy. (Stealth:5) He remains unseen as more men, Chinese and Westerners, fall to the ground. After a few more men fall, this section of the tournament should close.

((It's not down to the last men. The opening bout is between 32 men, and the remaining 16 move on to enter a one-on-one tournament which becomes 8, then 4, and finally 2. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.))

Chen manages to compose himself. His captain puts a hand on his shoulder. "Don't worry, you'll get used to it. Why don't you head down to the camp and help round everything up?" The captain motions to the camp, being pillaged and the remaining French being taking captive. Chen can hear the gunfire of some captives being executed.

Leia is confused by the Captain's manner of speech, but pitches her tent anyways. "I'm content with sleeping among your men, Captain Brimstone Sir, and...probably much better this way." He shrugs. "Whatever you wish. Get some good shut eye, you'll be seeing some action tomorrow, I promise. Sleep tight." He bows his head and then walks away back into the tent.

Kenshin grabs his gun and orders the men to surrender, their hands behind their heads. They submit, dropping their knives and pistols. Kenshin leads them out of the cave, back into the forest and looks back on the events. Jesus must have been guiding him in living out the way of the samurai.

Eventually Kenshin runs into the English cavalry from his camp. The horses stop in front of Kenshin and his captives. "Who are these men, Boxers?"

(2 vs. 6) The reinforcement unit fires ineffective shots at the church. (4 vs. 3) The rebels fire back and wound one of the men. (4 vs. 1) Wang's Unit fires into the church. The firing is halted, and the rebels come out, hands in the air. They are quickly rounded up and subdued by the Imperialist forces.

The other captain looks to Wang, "I guess we should rendezvous with the others now."

Dingbang Kuo sets out with his company across the Manchurian desert. He had been assigned there as his first duty, to repel the attacks by the ferocious Muslim Kansu Braves.

The captain of the company halts his troops. "We have two situations: The first is that we have information that a Kansu group has rooted themselves in a village to the northwest. Half of you are to march there and drive them out. The other half are to continue on this road for three miles and investigate a mysterious fire ravaging a trading settlement. All of you, decide which task you will take and head on out with your respective lieutenants."

Dingbang now has to decide which mission he will take. He is armed with two American weapons; a Jefferson Repeating Rifle, a gun specializing in mid-range combat, and for close range the American Bowie Knife with good thrusting, slashing and tool utilization. Akio smirked. How fitting. He crept just the slightest amount closer, still observing. Quickly, he went through his pockets to write down what he'd said, and what he said later. Then, if they're alone, he fires an arrow  at their feet and approaches them, nocking another arrow.
"Ah, but she already knows. And she is not pleased with it. Your mistress is right to be afraid, you know. Your wife is very, very angry."

((I think an update to playerlist/waitlist is needed, given that scapheap is playing :) ))

Seeing some action, hm? Are we that close to the front lines?

Leia examined her notes, mostly scribbles as she pondered on what to do.

In a soldier's camp. Might not want to disturb their rest - they need it more than me, obviously. The walk was very tiring...wonder what kind of regimen they take to endure that? Twenty kilometers at dawn before breakfast?

Darn, I really should've gotten into long distance running...into shape, for that.

She moved into her tent, contented with the fineness of the earth under her (using a common cloth tool technique) and examined her notes.

Well...if there's action I'd be seeing, might as well take a good rest. Not much else I can do, I guess.

Rest, but not before securing the entrance of my tent.

Wang investigates the church before he heads off. Stepping through the doors, he sees that the pews and statues have been put into places as barricades. There are rebel corpses on the floor, he'd estimate about half a dozen in here total. He puts his lighter to a nearby candle, and drops the candle on the church floor. The flame starts to cackle as he walks back out.

The two groups head away from the now burning church, making their way back through the mountain to meet the others. As they round a bend, Wang spots a group of Russians. Before they can pass though, the Russians take a stand in the road, blocking them off. "What's this?" asks the other Chinese officer. One Russian states, "Beyond here is claimed Russian land. Our leaders sends word not to let anyone clear until he gives the signal." The Chinese officer steps forward, "This is madness, let us through." The Russian shrugs. "If you want to come through,-" he draws a pistol at the Chinese officer, "You do so as a corpse." The Chinese officer pulls out his revolver and points it back in response. Soon, every Russian and Chinese soldier is pointing guns at each other.

Leia picked herself up at the relentless sound of movement about her, along with perhaps the vague shadow of a passing man against her tent - a silhouette in the morning sun.

Stretching a bit, she ensured she was in a tidy appearance as she packed up; checking her sword and knife (well, as far as a machete was known as a 'large knife' in English where she came from) and preparing everything for another day.

"Good morning guys, time we'd set out?" she whispered to herself as she peaked out of the tent.

Wake up, discern what's happening around me, try to spot the officer in charge/anyone I met and got acquainted with yesterday and learn what just happened.

((Whoops, I repeated your turn. Let me update it.))

Chen heads down the slope to the camp.

Tents are being burned, supplies looted and Frenchmen are being executed. One of the Boxers runs up to Chen. "Hey Sniper! Some of them ran into the marsh." He indicates the area near the river, which dips down into a semi-flooded area with tall grass. "Can you go after them? We can't let them escape."
