Most games have a limit of "2 days to accept fort, 2 more for first update, 1 week to work on it (Extensions pending good writing), and always stop in the spring."
About dorfing: what do you do is someone else asks to be dorfed?
When making Journals: It is concidered bad form to span 15 replies for 1 season. I personally try to use only 4 replies: 1 for each season. Editing is your friend, especially if you want to report things as they happen.

IMPORTANT! the lever near the bridge is not linked! link it to the bridge!
Everyone had seen it coming, the end of Gwolfski's command. He had spent Crewedgear's first year rather foolishly, attending to pet projects and dangerously tinkering with the natural flow of the river's course. After community outrage boiled over due to multiple preventable deaths he had decided to step back and appoint a successor.
While his resignation was predictable, no one could figure out who he would appoint to the position of Overseer. Talon, resident legendary miner, was a popular bet. He was friends with most and displayed the intense courage that dwarfs appreciate in a leader. So, too, was the engraver, seemingly Gwolfski's closest and most trusted friend.
So when Gwolfski appointed Salmeuk, the lonely carpenter who's only friend was a skittish cat, the rest of the dwarfs were shocked. Who was Salmeuk again? THE CARPENTER? What skills did he bring to the position of overseer, beyond his ability to accurately estimate forest reserves and to craft wooden furniture? Gwolfski calmed them, as best a twilight leader could.
He told them of the late night meeting where Salmeuk outlined a detailed system to promote individual organization and fortress growth. Gwolfski had secretly viewed this as a great way to step away from his much maligned position of leadership and still maintain a slight grip on the reigns, while still appeasing any calls for his removal.
The summarized plan, or "The Five Paths" as Salmuek introduced it, follows.
- 1. Establish efficient and expandable food production
- 2. Create functional living spaces to meet the needs of our immediate community
- 3. Outline a military hierarchy and begin training the leadership
- 4. Centralize the fortress layout, increasing crafting efficiency
- 5. Construct adequate surface defenses in the form of walls and moats
Whether or not we would accomplish these quests would soon become known.

One of the farmers was promoted into a crossbow-wielding minion today. She has moderate skill, but that still places her high and above anyone else in the fortress. She goes by 'Maxcat' and can usually be found target shooting.

Kubok's son, Bomrek, has taken over a craftsdwarfs workshop in some sort of strange mood. He's only grabbed a single stone, however - no one thinks his little project will succeed.

Our total population being 34, that means just under half the fortress is made up of children. Our hands were fairly full beforehand, and with another mass of idle mouths we're questioning how to simply feed everyone.
The Marksdwarf was placed in the same squad as Maxcat. The mason was instructed to make stone blocks, and the others were told to bring the rest of the wood into our stockrooms. The children began eating.

3rd Slate
Bomrek was found collapsed in the workshop today, after working on his creation for over a week without stopping to rest or eat. Neither of his parents (nor any other dwarf who tried) could wrest him from the carving bench before this point, and so as we rushed to the workshop we feared his death. To our surprise, he was pulled from the shop still breathing, and clutching a carved rock bracelet of legendary design!

It was utterly immaculate, yet because it was made from but a single chunk of kaolinite the bracelet was also nearly worthless. And immediately after this amazing act of creative power, Bomrek went right back to being useless.

Tulon Chantmine has begun expanding our food production level. He hacks away the soft loam in huge chunks, easily doubling our food storage and production shops. Next up is a dining hall.

Work is coming along nicely on the tower. The floor is almost finished, and once we get some glass stockpiled the construction should be finished relatively quickly.

And so, Spring has come to an end. Unmentioned progress includes extending the 3x3 stairway to a depth of 50 z-levels (without piercing a single cavern!), constructing a diorite block wall on the surface, terraforming the nearby cliffs to later place a bridge, and the establishment of a marble mine. Masons have already begun carving those pure, white marble dining tables that dwarfs can't resist admiring. The fortress is growing, and so too the spirits of the dwarves within.
END of my command? oh no, this is just a short break. Just thinking about removing me you filthy maggots nice people?
I will return to power! and by then my slaves will have finished making the fortress powerfull mwahaha!!! those who died you ask? why, they stood in the way of progress!

I really don't know. It seems like no matter how hard I try, the dwarf that best fits my needs for overseer always ends up being a girl! It's easy enough to ignore if you really want to write from a male perspective.

New succession games with fairly relaxed rulesets are hard to come by these days, so I'm hardly surprised. Most everything is years-deep in fortress metaplot (and as such fairly inpenetrable) or modded via MLP or Masterwork.

We take checks and most cards, your estimate for the work is 874.67 and we should be done in a week or so. We're having Billy put in your floor, he's an experienced woodworker and you can definitely trust his judgement when it comes to mixing wood and raw stone on the same floor.

Medtob pushed his way into a mason's workshop today, kicking out the dwarf inside. He rapidly retrieved two unassuming boulders of stone, then sat upon them speaking to himself in strange tones and patterns. The mountain home was out of booze, apparently, and double price was offered on any alcohol sold next autumn. Also heavily requested were figurines made of pearl. Considering the absence of fishing talent at this fortress, this was a silly request.

I woke up today to the sounds of shouting. Kubuk had finished his artifact, returning to normality with no particular memory of what had just occurred. His creation was a stupendous hatch cover, something that the other masons claim to be 'virtually impenetrable'. Perhaps a great boon, if used correctly!

It took us a while to recognize it as Goden, but even then how it got there was a mystery. No one really knew him, so he must have been a new migrant at some point. But how did he end up dead and in pieces at the bottom of our heavily-traveled staircase?

Overseer's Log: Introduction

It is the fourth of Granite, 127. I have arrived here in Crewedgears to see a fortress that is a good deal disorganized, at least at first glance. Hopefully I can whip that into shape a bit. Or at least, make it look presentable. My top priorities will be as follows:
- Search for and mine precious metals
- Make as much soap as possible
- Ensure the dining room is large enough to accommodate for future residents.
This fortress, I ensure, will become a great piece of dwarven history! Weather or not it fails, becomes the capitol, or survives a hundred years, will attest to the grandeur that we will create! I have heard of plans from the founder that will make his room more luxurious, however as I've never dabbled with such affairs, I may have to put it off. His needs are important, but the greater good of the fort stems above all else, wouldn't you say? Anyway, enough introductions: It is time to begin!

The actual building of the workshops will have to wait until later. Next, I will scout out the area for caves, loose minerals, and extra gems. Caves will lead us to fungal trees, large veins of minerals, and great deposits of gems. Since elves care SO MUCH about the trees on the surface, replacing the logging up top with logging down below will be very important. Elves are weak, but peace and order are better than war. After my designation, I begin the search for a cavern. Upon inspection, it seems an effort was already made, but was unsuccessful. I hope to change that. (http://i.imgur.com/aK8LGsu.png)

A few days later, on the fifteenth, an elven caravan arrives. I hope they brought plenty of fruits as usual, we could always use more variance in our drinks. Down in the caverns, we strike tetrahedrite, lapis lazuli, and brown zircon, with no cavern in sight. Hopefully there will be more to it than this. The elves have disappointed me this year, bringing only twenty total fruits. Many of them are limes, which would do very well in the brewery, however, so I suppose it's not a total waste. With that, trading is concluded, and I will now devote my efforts to the events down below. I also temporarily leave the brewing industry in order to build the workshops required for soap-making. Due to the nature of my craft, I order the carpenters to make more buckets. We will need them.

I immediately inspect the scene only to find that the human in question is confined to a cage. Relieving. I hope that I will not have to watch over the beast.
It looks like my plans for finding a cavern have not yet borne fruit, so I shall extend them until I do. I tell some of the idle dwarves to assist in the soap-making procedure. I assign several of them to do both wood burning and lye-making. This will speed up the process considerably.
Minerals have been found down below, however there is nothing else to report quite yet. I had doubled the length of the search tunnels, to no avail. A cavern is yet to be seen by the eyes of Crewedgears. We will dig deeper instead of farther this time.
On the sixteenth of Slate, migrants arrive! They include two rangers, a metalsmith, two fishery workers, a clothier, a stonecrafter, a brewer, a miller, a wood burner, an engineer, a pump operator, two farmers, two unskilled workers, and a bone doctor. A very useful bunch of workers indeed. To commemorate the migrants, the glassmaker Avuz Yellsabbey throws a party in the dining hall. Show them some good old-fashioned Crewedgears hospitality, friend.
Down below, no caverns have been found, although we have hit a vein of Native Gold. I have high hopes for the future of Crewedgears, and Spring isn't over yet. I go to the forges and order them to smelt some gold.
Troubling news, a few dwarves were out by the mouth of the river, and apparently an accident occurred. The newly-arrived bone doctor and one of the miners were found dead, drowned in the river. Damn, we will have to be more careful in the future.
One of the brewers tells me that we are out of empty barrels, so I tell the carpenters to fix that problem. More gold is struck deep underground. This is welcome news.

Overseer's Log: Entry Two
It is the twenty-fourth of Slate, 127. Our miners are feverishly searching the underground for a cavern. So far we've found gold and gems, however the amount we have will simply not be enough. A cavern must be found.
The dwarves keep insisting on telling me when the weremonitor transforms. It's in a cage and can't get out, get over it. On the not-so-annoying side, the carpenters are creating very nice barrels. Masterpieces at that. The miners have dug down to layer 81 underground, and have yet to find any sign of a cavern of any kind. Troubling, but not the end of the world. I know I said that the amount of gold we had was not enough, but as I say that, more is uncovered. The veins of gold stretch far beyond what we can see, I'm certain. This means that a cave will not be as crucial to Crewedgears as it would be to other forts, and as such, we are safe from forgotten beasts until we find one.
Now that we have plenty of barrels, I order the brewers to brew some drinks out of the fruit we recently acquired. Variance in the kitchen is a very important way to keep stressed dwarves sane. (http://i.imgur.com/kkCQzux.png)

Troubling. It seems like I'll have to build walls around the river to ensure the hunters don't commit suicide. I extend the plans that my predecessors set in place and permit the idle workers to build the walls. Hopefully this will be enough. With this, there are no more idle hands in Crewedgears.
As that happens, I look down in the caverns to see what the miners have found. Plenty more gold was uncovered and mined thanks to my plans.
Gwolfski, the founder and one of the carpenters informs me that we have run out of wood. Let's fix that, shall we? I order some trees to be chopped down.
It appears that the walls are finished. The amount of idlers in the fortress have gone back up to ten. I'll fix that, too. I order the sand and dirt floors in the founder's chamber to be replaced with fine stone. Next up will be upgrading his furniture. (http://i.imgur.com/a2vVxNH.png)
With that, I commence the creation of soap. First we burn wood for ash, make it into lye, and turn it into soap. We will have soap. We will be clean. Overseer's Log: Entry Three
It is the twenty-fourth of Felsite, as previously established. The plans are in place for the expansion and industrialization of the forge.
It is almost summer, and I hope that all will be well before the year is out. I permit s a few idlers to train in the art of butchery so that there may be meat for the dwarves, and tallow for the soap. I feel that building the wall beforehand was the right course of action. No casualties have been reported since construction was mandated.

Overseer's Log: Entry Four
Summer has arrived, and with it, more high hopes of riches in the depths as well as many more jobs to be done. People are hauling food and ores into their proper stockpiles, and the miners have been ordered to dig as deep as possible. We will find a cavern if it kills us. Which, in all likelihood, just might.

Looks like it's full of water, but there's gold and galena everywhere. We'll see just what else is down here. In related news, with the expansion of the forges done, I have permitted a few other idlers to smelt the ores. Now we can craft masterful golden jewelry for trade.
In the cavern, I have designated a zone in which dwarves can fish. This will ensure we have more food in the fort for years to come. I also mandate that a well be constructed. There is a stretch of cavern to the south that has solid ground, so I will make it a top priority that we can get there in order to secure more wood.
After some digging, it is known that the only way to get to that solid ground is to build a bridge. Damn, we don't have time for this. There are more pressing matters to be attended to, such as the soap situation.
Great news! The forges have produced more than enough gold, and now Gwolfski's golden furniture is complete!

I have dug out space for a secondary dining hall, in case the first one gets full. I will carve a picture of it in the journal as it nears completion. I have kept it fairly simple so it may be expanded easily if need be. I will appoint all idle dwarves present at the moment to be a team of stone smoothers.
No incidents occur during this time aside from a child trowing a party. happy dwarves are efficient dwarves.

Overseer's Log: Entry Five
It is now the first of Limestone, and no incident has occurred since spring ended.
The mayor's room is being smoothed, and the fellows from the mountainhome will arrive in no time, with all the work that needs to be done.
Time passes without much to say. No news is good news, I suppose.
The dwarven caravan arrives on the ninth of Limestone, and I hope to do plenty of business with them. Plenty of tools, weapons, and foodstuffs. Ah, the joys of trading.

I tell the liaison that we would like military goods, leather, and several other things. With that, the agreements are made, and trading can begin.
A huge deal is done, with some offerings to the mountainhome. They will be back next year with even more items than before.

Hopefully my efforts to expand the fortress's industry will bear even more fruit before winter is over. With us having plenty of food and other resources, I turn my attention to a very concerning matter: We have no hospital in Crewedgears. What if we wage war? What if beasts invade? With no hospital, it will be easy for us to be overcome by injuries, and die deaths that no dwarf should experience. A dwarf should die fighting or die of age, not laying sick in bed or bleeding out.

The miners work feverishly to make my goals reality, and for that I am thankful. This, however, will not be the bulk of the work. I need to devote efforts into building traction benches and constructing mechanisms. Without them, the hospital will not be as properly equipped as it should. With the introduction of a hospital, we will be needing many more beds. This is not a problem for the master carpenter Salmeuk.
I order the forges to make chains and the masons to make tables, key parts of a traction bench. The construction of traction benches will mark the true opening of the hospital.
On the twenty-third of Limestone, more migrants arrive. Good, we will need them for both industry and military.
Celebration! on the twenty-eighth, the child Tun Logemusir throws a party in one of the dining rooms. That's the spirit, kid.
On the third of Sandstone, one of the largest projects in Crewedgears has begun. We will be smoothing a large 23X23 room that will serve as the hospital. The next big project is to furnish it, and ensure it is well-equipped. After the hospital is done, next will be a more proper barracks. The militia will be living in luxury, albeit not quite as much as Gwolfski, but luxury nonetheless.
Time passes without incident. I order some more minor actions to be carried out in the midst of the hospital smoothing.
Huzzah! On the twenty-fourth of Sandstone, the project is complete! Now for the furniture...
I have designated where the furniture will be hauled, as well as setting the area as the hospital. Once the hauling is done, I will engrave an image of the hospital here.

There are still stones around the place, but now we have a full-fledged hospital where injured dwarves are certain to recover. Now I will focus on upgrading the militia, as well as their barracks.

It is Gleamfight the Oily Persuasions, and I hope to avoid it at all costs until we are outfitted with steel armor and weapons.
Troubling. I immediately order the gates to be closed. With thirty idle dwarves, the pulling of the lever should prove to go very quickly. But I can only wait and watch.
The lever is pulled without a moment lost, and any casualties that would have been had are thus prevented. With both bridges closed, the dwarves cannot even have access to the wood stockpile, as well as being unable to store any trade goods made in the near future. As a result of this, I suspend the creation of gold crafts, we should have much more than enough for now.
With the crisis of the colossus averted, I turn my attention inward, back to the scene where I plan to excavate the barracks.

A series of twelve 7x7 rooms, each large enough for their own squad of ten. With them all interconnected and attached to the main staircase, we could mobilize a whole army with ease. This is what a barracks really looks like.

Bad news. A small stretch of aquifer has been found within the plans for the barracks. It looks like we will have to settle for eleven rooms instead of twelve.

Overseer's Log: Entry Seven
It is the fourteenth of Timber, and we have laid the groundwork for a hospital, an improved barracks, and industrialized metal and soap production. There is a Bronze Colossus
outside the fortress that has killed all of the livestock, but once the barracks are finished, training can begin, and in no time, the colossus will not be a problem.
For now, we are cooped up inside our fort, without any way out. This is not much of a problem because of the fact that I have recently ensured that we have plentiful materials such as food and drink among other things. Overall, the status of the fort is much better than what it could have been.
I've noticed a completely empty room near the farms. Perhaps it was meant for a kennel? No matter it's original cause, that's what it will be now.
Over time, I have had more golden furniture constructed for our founder, and more marble and granite furniture for our mayor. I know for a fact that gwolfski is more than happy with what I've done for his room, but still really wants me to finish that pool of his. I've already made it clear that it won't be possible until someone else takes hold of Crewedgears, and with the colossus outside the fort, no one will be getting out, for better or for worse.

This can't be! How did the colossus get in?! The gates were closed and there were no dwarves outside the fort, so SOMETHING went wrong and it wandered inside. Many workers and children are being harassed by the creature, but so far it looks like there are too many targets for the colossus to effectively score a single kill. I order the current military on the scene immediately.

Well, I suppose it's better than being directly punched by the beast.
There were many deaths, but the colossus is dead. It's time to pull the levers, recover the wounded, and entomb the dead.
This is a great victory as well as a great loss. Several children and a few doctors were lost, but it's not the end of the world. The end of the Battle of the Bronze Colossus marks the end of autumn and beginning of winter.

Overseer's Log: Entry Eight
Praise be unto Obok Targetpaddle! She is the slayer of Gleamfight the Oily Persuasions! The timely production of the steel battle axe is what enabled her, but it was her strength in wielding it that won the battle. I order twenty coffins to be built, and hopefully that will be enough.
Troubling news, the breach in the aquifer is truly infinite. What this means is that the whole lower level of the fort is now entirely submerged in water, with still more pouring out of the room. I will make attempts to seal the hole, but dwarves will dare not go anywhere close to the torrents. Some of the fisherdwarves have been seen getting swept into the cavern inside the torrents. The situation has become very dire, and we must act fast, though it may already be too late.
Time passes without incident, aside from more sightings of the dead. Damn.
Work on sealing the aquifer is impossible, the torrent keeps coming too fast for dwarves to be able to seal the place in which it comes from. This means that the whole lower portion of the fortress will be flooded, and there's nothing we can do about it. All because I misunderstood the implications of an aquifer being "A nigh-infinite water source."

As many mason's shops are underneath the breach, we no longer have access to masonry. It's not a problem, however, as I just excavate a new room that will house many more workshops. I will now begin an expedition downward from a new part of the fort near the masons' quarters in hopes of finding more of what we need.

The name is dramatic, but the item in and of itself isn't too fancy in regards to mood-induced artifacts. It is a grand edition to our collection nonetheless.
Days pass with not much to report. The new public tomb is almost fully furnished and put to use. Hopefully we won't have to expand it too much.
An incident occured involving a cave crocodile, but from the reports, no one was killed but the croc. I even pitched in a bit myself, but hurt my left hand in doing so.
It shouldn't take too long for it to get patched up.

Now that the real groundwork for the tomb has been set, I can engrave a picture here.

Coffins are set in rows of four with a statue at the end between each row. Memorial slabs will be lined across the north and south walls, and the whole room will be expanded as necessary.
The barracks have not been smoothed, as we may need more squad dorms as the fortress's population expands.
As a last bit of support to the hospital, I order more bags and traction benches be made.
The Minotaur hasn't gotten into the fort, and is harassing the wildlife and what little livestock remain that were actually able to escape from the colossus.
What a dramatic end to an otherwise uneventful year. I feel this may be only the calm before the storm, however. We do not yet have adamantine, but we have gold crafts and steel weapons, making Crewedgears a high-value fortress indeed.

I want to highlight two phrases PsychoAngel used: "Crewedgears has faced a few troubles this year, but thrives even still," and "Crewedgears is in a good spot right now."
I BEG TO DIFFER.
Right now, a minotaur is rampaging on the surface. A child in the hospital is refusing to sleep and probably will go insane soon. We currently have a grand total of 2 surviving military dwarves, and neither of them are very skilled. No less than three ghosts are haunting the fortress. Anything else? Oh yeah. THE LOWER HALF OF THE ENTIRE FUCKING FORTRESS IS FLOODING.
No wonder PsychoAngel was so quick to give up the position of overseer. He wants the people to blame someone else when everything goes to Hell (well, more than it already is).
I can think of 7 goals than need to be completed soon.
1. Kill the minotaur.
2. Seal the aquifer breach.
3. Stop the river/waterfall from murdering everyone.
4. Fill Gwolfski's pool.
5. Rebuild the military.
6. Get rid of all the ghosts.
7. Kill all the children (this one is very important).

Well, that was easy.
2. Seal the aquifer breach.
Most of the water is leaking into the caverns right now, so the damage isn't too bad, and we can still salvage almost all of the lower levels. The barracks, where the leak is coming from, is already partially walled off, so all we have to worry about is the water leaking to the lower levels.
I designate the staircase one level below the breach as either up-staircases or floors. Many times throughout the process, the dwarves suspend the task and tell me that there is too much water to build anything. I merely unsuspend the job, and eventually they complete the task. We now have only two levels that cannot be built on, instead of everything below the aquifer.
3. Stop the river/waterfall from murdering people.
It's only the 15th of Granite, and already one dwarf, one elf merchant, and one horse have tried to cross the river near the waterfall and drowned. There are two issues: as the river approaches the waterfall, its depth lowers slightly, making people think it's safe to cross. The other problem is someone decided to dig into the river and build a secondary place where the river flows, making the issue even worse.
I plan to wall off this lower section then build a bridge across the upper portion to fix both issues. Sound simple enough.

What does that look like to you? What was its original purpose? I have no idea. I can tell you what it is though: it is the most potent and terrifying death trap I have ever seen. We lost a total of ten dwarves trying to seal off the river, including two of the previous overseers, Gwolfski and Salmeuk. Also, notice the red wall on the left? That's not clay or sand, it's blood from the various dwarves who have splattered on the bottom.

The rest of the design goes smoothly without incident, and not a single dwarf is lost. It's funny, had I used this strategy first, everyone would still be alive. I feel like 25% of our adult population is well within an acceptable casualty rate, especially since it was all needless.

4. Fill Gwolfski's pool.
Well, Gwolfski is dead, so I'm not sure of the point of this. I'm going to postpone it for later.
5. Rebuild the military.
Right now, we have a grand total of two military dwarves. Luckily, the most recent migrant wave happened to have 10 rangers, all of whom had some skill as marksdwarves, a sworddwarf, and a macedwarf. I draft them all and order them to begin training. I'll worry about weapons and armor later.
6. Get rid of the ghosts.
Actually, all of the ghosts have slabs engraved for them already, they just need to be put up. I also need to make and engrave slabs for the ten dwarves who decided to jump off the waterfall, so yeah.
7. Murder Release the children from their life of suffering.
I hate children. They drink our booze, eat our food, and do absolutely nothing to help us survive. Normally they're a pest that can be ignored, but this fortress has almost half of its population under the age of 12.

I burrow all the children in a small room with the caged werebeast. Our mechanic (well, technically our actual mechanic is at the bottom of the river, this girl is just a random nobody who had no other useful skills) connected the cage to a lever. At the next full moon, we will pull the lever and release the werebeast into the room.
I highly doubt that she will be able to kill all the dwarves, but she should be able to bite a couple of them, so at the full moon after that the bitten children will turn and kill the survivors.
It is the 19th of Hermatite, and we can hear howls of pain coming from the creature as she turns into a monster. We release her from her trap, and with a savage leap, she immediately begins to fight the 35 children in the room.

Unfortunately, despite wounding nearly all of them, she only manages to kill 4 before turning back into a human and having her skull caved in. Oh well, she did manage to bite a couple of them, so hopefully next month will be the end. If that fails, the dwarves will die of dehydration before long. You know, never before have I thought about locking 35 children in a room with a savage beast and hoping that everyone dies.

I haven't written in this journal for the last couple of months because nothing of interest has happened lately. We did have two artifacts created

One was a chain, which is at least moderately useful. The other was a crown. While the crown itself is unhelpful, its creator became a legendary engraver, our first (living) one in the fortress.
About a month after the werebeast attack earlier this summer, the children start to slowly die of dehydration.

Actually, it wasn't very slow, they all died within 3 days of each other. I was hoping for some of them to turn and mass slaughter to ensue, but I guess this works too. The result is the same. I didn't actually show a picture of the room, because it was too full of miasma to actually see anything.

These pictures show our two graveyard areas 3 and a half years after founding the fort. To put this in perspective, there are 82 dwarves living in the fort right now. We have 115 coffins and slabs built.

By the way, not every single child died. Once only three were left, I unlocked the doors and let them go to the hospital. One was placed in the farthest back bed of our giant hospital and died before water could be brought to her (the dwarf bringing her water was in the hospital, but he had to walk so far that by the time he got to her bed, she was already dead).

The nobles are complaining about not having enough rooms, so I give them the old barracks made during PyschoAngel's year. The military is training on the surface now to avoid cave adaption.
A dwarf came to me today, claiming to be Gwolfski's biggest fan. In honor of his death, this dwarf has taken on Gwolfski's name and is now demanding to be trained as both a swordsdwarf and a marksdwarf, and to have all the same accommodations as Gwolfski. I give him Gwolfski's old office.

We struck adamantine in the third cavern layer today! All we need is magma, and then we can be a true dwarven fortress!
So, like I said, other than half of our population dying of dehydration, nothing really important happened during these last couple of months. I'll probably work on expanding our metal industry and building up our outer wall during the last few months of the year.
(OOC: I looked through legends, and this is actually a really cool world, instead of a mainland, it's all a series of islands across a large world. That's probably why we haven't seen any other civilization besides elves, though.

Work is being done on mining the adamantine. It is a very hands on task. I have to monitor each and every section that's being mined to make sure that it's safe. Actually, I have never seen a vein this large because most of the ones that I have seen have breached the magma sea 2 or 3 floors down. This one has no such problems, and we are able to dig out 8 levels fully, with a good amount still to go. We still haven't breached the magma.

The rest of our efforts were spent expanding the upper wall. Before construction, it was one floor high, tall enough to stop animals and unintelligent monsters, but nowhere near high enough to protect us from smarter invaders or fliers.

I order the speardwarves to take care of it. The Captain of the Guard, one of two of the survivors from last years slaughter with the bronze colossus, was the dwarf who scored the kill. Amazingly, unlike how you would expect to kill a two-headed giant, he killed the beast by stabbing it in both of its heads. He then ran off to get a drink.

Our military is in much better shape than it was at the beginning of the year. Although they are not very well armed, they are beginning to gain skill. The marksdwarf squad is the biggest, but I would trust the speardwarves more at this point, since they are they only squad to have both steel weapons and metal armor.
Also, one of our workers was trapped on the second floor of the wall and needs to be rescued.

Events of the 7 of granite, 129
"What would you do, if everybody you loved was dead? What would you do if you knew the man responsible?"
The dining room was in chaos. Asmel, one of the miners, had stood on a table and began to give a speech to the dwarves on break.
"This man, TheCheeseMaker, became overseer at the start of last year. He promised us safety, security, freedom from fear. But all I've seen is meaningless destruction."
Tears welled up in her eyes.
"All of my children are dead because of him. Gwolfski, Salmeuk, all dead because of him. I don't know about you, but I will not live another day under his rule. I say down with the tyrant! Down with TheCheeseMaker!"
Soon the entire hall was filled with the chant. At this point, TheCheeseMaker realized that perhaps murdering all the children and accidentally killing many important members of the fort perhaps did not cause the survivors to like you.
He decided to step down from power. Let the next guy be in charge. Something else will happen during the next year that's worse. The year after that, too, and the year after that. Let them see that despite half the fortress dying during the past year, we were actually better off.
There is now only one, very safe entrance to the fort. The military had gone from 2 to 20 members. The fortress is no longer flooding from the aquifer breach. Despite all the destruction, Ginetolon is in a better spot than it was.

What have I gotten myself into? We appear to have a large room dedicated to soapmaking, but the fortress has no soap. While I can almost understand the mind which devotes so many resources to the production of soap, I am completely at a loss why anyone would spend the time and materials to build such a room, and then never actually make any soap there.
And then there’s my immediate predecessor. He did manage to get the flooding under control, and get the military at least somewhat into shape, but after the losses suffered in his project to close off the waterfall access, and his use of a werebeast to kill nearly all of the fortress children, his popularity reached too low a point for him to continue.
And so I have been forced to assume the position of overseer. While the fortress certainly has its issues, we seem to be well positioned to carve out a glorious future. We have recently struck that wondrous blue metal known as adamantine. With this precious resource, our soldiers will soon be the envy of all… ahhh, I’ve just been informed that we have no skilled armorers at all, and that our only weaponsmith is merely dabbling at the craft… I shall immediately set some of our citizens to learning these skills, so that once the adamantine is ready to be crafted into the finest of arms and armor, we may have a smith worthy of crafting it. And speaking of getting the adamantine ready, I immediately order tunnels dug to seek out magma, as everydwarf knows only the wonder which is magma can be used to craft the glorious blue metal with the reverence it deserves.
13th Granite, 129-
An elven caravan has arrived. I immediately order all of our finest worn out clothing and worthless trinkets brought to the depot, as befits such noble merchants.
Also, efforts to train up worthy smiths have been slowed down by a lack of quality metals to train them on. I’ve ordered that one of the smelters be dedicated to non-stop production of steel, and another to smelt galena and tetrahedrite, in hopes of getting silver for our dwarves who prefer the mace or hammer over the blade.

Today, our secretive fisherdwarf laid claim to a craftsdwarf’s workshop. He won’t tell anyone what he’s using it for, and if anyone comes near he hides whatever he’s working on and glares at them until they leave.
Also, some migrants arrived today, 19 of them in all, bringing our population to 101. Among them were 2 macedwarves, 2 hammerdwarves, and a swordsdwarf. Also 2 children.

Urist Islandlash, the fisherdwarf who has been occupying a craftsdwarf’s shop for the last month and a half, went berserk today. Apparently he couldn’t find the materials for whatever it was he planned to make. Luckily, the swordsdwarf Kol Beanchamber was passing by and lopped off the head of the berserk fisherdwarf before he could do much damage.
Also, Avuz Sunkenbanners, a farmer, gave birth to a son today.

Spring has come to a close. Production of quality weapons and armor for our troops is underway, and construction has begun on the adamantium processing center. As we move into summer, I can only hope that our fortunes continue to improve.

The mayor has mandated more battleaxes. It is refreshing to see a mayor who understands the importance of the military.
Craftsdwarf’s shops for the strand extractors and magma smelters to smelt adamantine have been completed. Now we begin the the preparation of this magnificent metal for forging into the most spectacular of arms and armor. We should have a decent stockpile of it built up by the time any of our smiths become skilled enough to allow them to even think of touching the blue metal.

One of our miners, Asmel Wardbook, gave birth to a daughter today.

More migrants arrived today, 8 in total, none of them skilled in anything useful. This brings the total popluation of Crewedgears to 111 dwarves.

The forgotten beast Ngoso Usasp has come. This enormous 3-eyed stonefly represents the first challenge we have yet faced under my leadership. But as I’ve been working to ensure that our soldiers are well equipped, and had them training non-stop as well, I’m certain that they are up to the task of slaying this horror from the deeps. I have stationed them near the entrance to the fortress from the 2nd cavern. However, the water in this cavern prevents the soldiers from approaching the beast. Hopefully, it will come within their reach.

The beast Ngoso has wandered off into an unexplored area of the caverns. It appears that our soldiers may not get the opportunity to prove themselves after all. I have ordered exploratory tunnels built in an effort to relocate the creature. In the meantime, I have allowed our soldiers to return to their training and closed the drawbridge, sealing off the 2nd cavern layer.

One of our craftsdwarves, Mebzuth Scouredwheeled, has a crazed look in her eyes, and is muttering in something incomprehensible that might be a language.

Mebzuth barged into the clothiers shop today and made everyone else leave. Nobody felt like arguing with the crazy gleam in her eyes, so they let her have the place.

I have located the portion of the cavern where the beast Ngoso is located. The creature seems to have a fondness for deep water, and has thus far shown no inclination to venture near any dry ground where our soldiers might engage him and put an end to his threat.

Mezbuth began making something today. She’s using pig tail cloth, lead, giant eagle leather, and kakapo bones. I’m sure it will be a magnificent garment indeed upon completion.

The duties of overseeing this fortress begin to weigh heavily on me. While the fortress has no doubt prospered under my guidance, I feel it is stagnating. Perhaps soon, it shall be time for me to step aside, and allow someone else to shoulder this burden for a while.

The time has come when I feel I must pass the burden of Crewedgears on to another. While I have much improved the state of our military forces, and paved the way to arming them with shining blue, I have failed to train any smiths sufficiently to work adamantine with the skill it deserves. And I have failed to exterminate the beast in the 2nd cavern, so dispite their training and improved arms and armor, the might of our military is largely untested. I believe I shall spend my time henceforth working with the blue metal which calls to me so often of late…

Right. Here I am, wearing the stupid hat. Lucky me. 'Let's go to a different fort!' she said. 'Life will be better somewhere else!' she said. Well, I haven't been here 6 months and Ethan throws the stupid hat on my head at a party and runs off giggling. I take it off quick. It's a joke, right? But nooooo... everyone says 'that's how the succession works here'. Bunch of wankers. All I want to do is make armor and weapons - which we bloody well need, mind you! - but now I have to waste a year of my life listening to everyone whine and gripe every time the helmets aren't plump enough. Feh. And if the overseers who come after me don't like my notes in this fancy journal, tough!
So, what have we got?
First off, being an overseer is always a mixed bag - I remember old Urvad back in Shieldhollow telling stories about when he ended up running some shithole out in the middle of nowhere for a year, and everywhere you go, some things are good, some things are bad, and some things just don't make any damn sense at all. Here in Crewedgears, we have a lot of Option 3.
First off, the stockpiles don't make any damn sense. People mine adamantine in the bottom of the world, turn it into strands, take it allll the way up to the surface, put it in a bin, then turn around and pick it up and carry it allll the way back down again to be smelted into bars. Where do they go? Why yes, you guessed it, back to the surface. You'd think we get paid by the mile! There's also a major chokepoint where some kind of accident happened... the walls are all stained and drippy, so I'm assuming there was a flood at some point, but a full stair connects to another full stair by only three staircases. The backups get pretty bad there, so I ordered some more stairs built... at least we got to 6. I asked around about expanding, but the old dwarves screamed about "the great flood" and "waves of water" and such... don't know what that's all about, but I left it for now. Bugger it - if they want to wait in line to use stairs, let 'em.
Anyway, as soon as I started to look around and think about something other than metal, the first thing that happens is some bloody elf ponce comes swishing up to me, bold as brass, and starts cracking wise with short jokes and claiming we have "insulted the trees". Had the nerve to tell me "we were warned". I got a passing guard to "warn" him out the front door with a boot to the arse. I also told off the militia for letting him in here in the first place. Crikey, what's next? Now we're letting elves waltz in whenever they want, next we'll be watching the bloody greenies coming in the front door, asking them if they'd like some whiskey and roasts! Lazy gits.

We traded for some incidentals; I loaded them up with a shonky shop's worth of old clothes (who knows what the hell they do with the stuff!) and got some giant critters they had trapped. The giant kangaroo might be war-trainable; the giant wren is going in the nest boxes... as soon as I find them. Meanwhile, the more I watch the militia, the stranger they seem. First off, a lot of them aren't wearing any pants! That ain't right, a dwarf parading around with his unmentionables flapping in the breeze! Why didn't anyone make the militia some leggings or something? Secondly... well... I don't even know what was going on here:

Well, I've discovered that whoever laid out the food area has never lived in a normal fortress. There's all these weird... zones... where food could go, but they are only one urist wide. Makes no sense. I've turned one of the unused farm areas into a henhouse, and filled it with all the birds loose in the fortress and also some nest boxes. Eggs are rolling in by the basketful. I also started a new zone where we metalworkers in the deep forges can eat and sleep without having to come all the way up 150 flights of bloody stairs just to have a snack.

Apparently emeralds are a big thing here. As we were cleaning up the mess the miners left, I told the cleaners "just take this rock and dump it over there". Imagine my shock when they all picked up stones and paraded up the stairs! "Hey!" I yelled. "Where are you going?" "Dump's up here" I was told. I followed them just to see what they meant... 150 stairs later (see what I mean about paid by the mile?) out the door of the fort they went, across the bridge, and outside. What the bloody...? They took the rocks over to the RESERVOIR and DUMPED THEM IN. "What are you doing, idiots? That's the water we use to tend to the wounded!" Shrugs and dumb looks all round; someone told them this was where they were supposed to put all trash. In the drinking water. What the hell have I gotten myself into.
As if that weren't enough, some bone carver I'd never met kicked a crafter out of his shop and slammed the door in his face. We all know how this goes.

Success! I snuck away during one of Fath's interminable speeches and got a magma forge all to myself! Made some truly lovely doors and statues for the hall if I do say so myself, including one of Bar for my room. I also took the liberty of making two statues of Gwolfski, and put them in his rooms as a sign of appreciation for all his hard work. Of course, the mayor wasn't going to let that go unchallenged, so word comes he needs to see me right away. Right away, right away, urgent urgent! Crewedgears investigation -- spring report
This is agent Adrian Roosevelt, of the Ministry of Not Dying Horribly special investigation unit. I have recently reached the destination of my newest mission, known as Crewedgears, a sprawling hill-seated duchy metropolis housing close to 200 souls.
My initial objectives are on par with any ministry intervention, save for an aditional objective:
1-Investigate the infrastructure of the fortress.
2-Report and improve on any security flaw
3-Optimize the fortress's efficiency and long-term organisation
4-Investigate the previous rulers of the fortress for any implication with a criminal, terrorist association.

In order to operate unseen and unsuspected amidst the local crowd, I have infiltrated the most recent migration wave, presenting myself as ''Urist Dwarfperson'', a casual and unremarkable citizen of our glorious civilisation. I am accompanied by my assistant operative Emily, who will be mascarading as my wife for this operation, as well as our ''son'' Jared who is in fact a page responsible for all the paperwork and communications. My assumed identity as a Woodcutter should allow me to come and go through the city gates without raising suspicion, to contact my liason officer.

The duke of the place is known as Eldin00, and came to power only recently. While the investigation of his kind is paramount to my mission, interacting with the suspects so early would only raise suspicion. As such, I approached the duke as an eager civilian willing to help. ''The mountainhomes offer no possibility of advancement, so I came here hoping I could be mkore useful''. The duke was most happy to point out that the position of hammerer was open right now, due to... random events. As such I was promoted to nobility of Crewedgears very easily, which should legitimize my attempts to modify and perfect this fortress according to ministerial doctrines.
As I ask who is in charge of the fortress right now, I'm told ''nobody''. It is now the second month of spring, and nobody jhas stepped foward to claim the overseer hat. Many candidates were suggested, yet all of them mysteriously disapeared or rejected the title. Most suspect. I casually ask if they want me to take over until a better candidate comes foward, and they say ''sure''. Begin my inspection of the fortress proper.

-Immediate dangers include 3 forgotten beast, thankfully locked by a bridge in the caverns. However, this bridge is connected to a lever, and any untimely activation by invaders, critters or tantruming citizens could destroy the fortress. Note to self, seal the caverns more tightly.

Initial food stockpiles dangerously low. I'm told we have plenty of ''other things'' in terms of meals, but by experience this number could include anything ranging from rotten meals to uncooked rock nuts. Booze surplus is somewhat low as well, considering the large volume of dwarves relying on it. I meet with the infamous ''TheCheeseMaker'', suspected of children genocide. While credited with the sealing of a major flood, andf the contingecy plans put in place around a deadly chasm, TheCheeseMaker is feared and hated amidst the population for his role as mass-murderer. surprisingly, he was never convicted of anything and people are ok having him around. My status as hammerer should give me plenty of opportunities to investigate his past actions once I'm done putting this place back on tracks. for now, TheCheeseMaker keeps telling me he can't make booze because he lacks barrels. A certain PsychoAngel, also a past overseer, is with him complaining of barrel shortage as well. Which is saying a lot considering that he's the manager and hasn't produced any more barrels. I suggest politely that maybe he should fill out orders for more barrels, as well as some glass pots. He respond that for now, he's busy making booze, but can't because he doesn't have any barrels.
The bookkeeper in place is called Gwolfsky2, and apparently claimed the office of the previous founder after said overseer seemingly pummeled to his death in the chasm, alongside his successor Salmeuk 2. none of the bodies have been retrieved, and as such the death of those two dwarves cannot be confirmed. The timely appearance of this ''Gwoflsky2'' fellow right after the first one ''vanished'' leads me to believe that the original overseers tried to stage their deaths in order to avoid the blame of poor management. When I ask gwolfsky2 if we have any wood, he tells me that ''maybe''. He isn't sure. He hasn't been keeping track of the stocks much.
Wether the cast of previous overseers have encrusted themselves into nobility and administration jobs to better sabotage this fortress, or they are actually just genuine, legit incompetents.

There seems to be a large amount of adamantine mined in this fortress. A lot of it was processed into wafers, but about 65 threads are still stashed in the hospital, ready to be inadvertantly used for surgery. Of note is the proximity of the spire to the actual fortress. Should anything pierce the spire, or the magma sea nearby, there doesn't seem to be anything stopping creatures from running upstairs using the conveniently located 3x3 staircase. Setting up contingency for the adamantine mine would be good.

There seems to also be a lot of gold veins in this area. The various levels dug around the spire reveal many ore deposits, so this structure would double very well as a gold mining operation. I ask how many iddlers we have, and someone responds ''68''. Well, it is settled, we will acquire these gold veins. the current stocks are at 150 bars, but crafting any well-furnished room will eat rhough that very rapidly.

A long tunnel in the caverns reveals various ore and gem clusters. this tunnel serves no purpose, leads nowhere, and yet it was deemed necessary for it to be sealed. I designate the area re-opened, and the ores mined within the season. With the caverns offline, there is no point wasting perfectly good ressources.

In the caverns alone, I locate about 5 areas where corpses are floating in underwater lakes. nobody can tell me why this is. Obviously the caverns being off-limit for now will prevent further accidents in this section, but I can't help but wonder if gross incompetence or malice from some noble could be responsible. If so, sealing the caverns won't prevent more horrible deaths.

The main hospital was apparently built by PsychoAngel, self proclaimed grand Soaper. For someone who dedicated his job to making people healthy and clean, he sure didnt think things through. A bunch of beds are lying on one side of a massive unsupported room, with traction benches and medical supplies at the opposite side. This is a great way to maximize disease propagation. the second someone starts exhuming miasma or blood or vomit, ten nearby patients will be swimming in it.

Upstairs there is a pool, and it is filled with a corpse, and that's where the fresh water comes from for the well. healthy.

The graveyard for Crewedgears is filled with mushrooms and vegetation. I applaud the design which goes beyond ''fill a room tight-packed with all the coffins'', ut trees and clay is very undwarven. An actual mausoleum made of non-clay could be a good investment.

In fact, there are also fungi and moss and clay and wet patches of sand on the main level. The central hallway is essentially a moist, clay-covered area upon which moss grows freely, on top of which people have been discarding all the bolt and arrows they could find. Safe.

The general construction norms of this fortress are absurdly lacking. The first major room I come across seems to be dangerously unsupported by anything, and serves only to house randomly-placed masonry workshops that have all been forbidden. I order the workshops deconstructed, and more supporting structures put in place. Since we have a lot of gold incoming, It seems like a good idea to build the pillars out of massive gold, for extra happiness potential. the local population is less likely to object the workloads i suggest if it involves putting shinies everywhere.

Crewedgear has a serious lack of stockpiles. as a result, many boulders litter the hallways and newly-excavated rooms, and the 65 idlers do not move them. I've designated some pointless rooms for storage of stone boulders. In order to maximize efficiency, I will place various stockpiles on different levels, to avoid people moving blocks from the mines to the surface. This should give some of the dwarves on break a bit of work.

At the heart of the fortress is this room. What purpose does it serve, I don't know. I'll tell you what it is, tho. this is both our new central masonry area, and also the worst cave-in hazard I've seen in years.

I scribble some blueprints for modifications, as I am a certified auxilliary architect from the dwarven government. We'll seal the current small entrance, which can't support traffic. The large room will be divided in three. a central corridor leading to various workshops (made of gold, sure) as well as two rows of pillars (made of gold) to support the roof and mark the space meant for stone stockpiles on each side. As the stockpiles fill, we'll add block, gems and additional stone stockpiles along the sides, and appropriate workshops next to them.

Right next to it, across the river, one can find a water power plant, which has been turned off recently, mostly because the fortress has nothing to power. Looking at this area, one is almost lead to believe that the fortress can, actually, be turned into a productive beacon of living standarts and technology. Then there's the level nearby. That's the thing that'll need a special section.

The largest project of this fortress at the moment is a new housing district, consisting of two hundred rooms, each connected to the previous one in the middle. Instead of spirraling out from the central staircase, or concentrating around a main area or dinning hall, the rooms just go in one random direction, even further, and won't look back. This means that the farthest dwarves must travel absurd lenghts to reach their bedroom, as well as step trough the living space of up to nine other couples, while the dwarves lucky enough to be housed near the staircase will be suffering the constant traffic of their neighbors, and un-acceptable amounts of noise.

In comparison, the housing district right asbove this seems to be more compact and well-planned, with actual corridors leading to the different bedrooms. Sure, those bedrooms are smaller, but they are still more spacious than the dreadful 1x2 jail cells I've seen in other fortresses.

it's not just the fact that someone hollowed an entire section of the mountain, creating the greatest gravitational deathtrap known to dwarfkind. This general ''fuck it just dig everything down wherever'' attitude has been applied to basically the whole fortress. This, right here, is the level between the farms and the dinning room. you may notice it contaisn both a random mining project, as well as an empty giant room that can only be reached by going through every single other section of the level. Do we not have enough pointless giant rooms already, lying around in every fucking section of the fortress.

The decent housing section is somewhat undermined by the fact that half of it has been converted into a mining project in the middle of the fortress, again. Some miners tell me they have to continue, because that's where they'll find coke-bearing ores, and we need more of it.

Speaking of which, in the middle of the dinning area, there is a new 2-z-high area that's being dug as I write this. nobody knows why. Armok knows we already have plenty of random giant rooms lying around, thanks to the corridor 7 meters away leading to a fully-hollowed level of the mountain. Of special note is this project, a magnificient shooting tower meant to snipe our enemies from above. This is a very beautiful tower, and the general layout of the courtyard is actually nice. Plenty of room, and grass for pastured animals, and spare room for more projects and extra farms. here's the main flaw of it all tho. The shooting tower is in the middle of the courtyard. That means that it is really good at shooting down opponents who have already breached our defenses.

As mentionned in my initial evaluation of the fortress, crewedgears suffers from various crippling issues, ranging from blatant disorganisation, poor life quality, up to potential sabotage and terrorism by the local nobles. My investigation of the previous overseers will begin shortly, but the two months of spring i was given were spent trying to rectify the situation. As i write this every member of the fortress is non-idler and contributing to the hauling or improvement of the infrastructure. here are the highlights, as of the fourth month, 132:

A new crypt has been designed, more dwarven in style and materials. It should house 24 coffins for the time being, along with an associated slab. there is room for additional wings to the back and sides, in case of horrible Deaths Waves. Should this be the case (ad i hope not) then this central room can sprawl into a vast and fancy catacomb complex.

The area has been excavated, but none of the engravers are available, as they focus their attention on the Mountainfall Halls, or the stupid interconnected bedrooms. Need to tell them to stop that.

The structural integrity of the mountain being at risk, I've designated some pillars. Not sure it'll be enough. the area around the edges will temporarily store the countless boulders left by this pointless and suicidal mining operation. The engravers have been relocated to the crypt, and the actual important areas of the fortress. Aside from that, I've noticed countless furnitures lying on the ground instead of being hauled, which hints at a lack of appropriate stockpiles. As the season finish, our stores are left with little to no fresh uncooked food, and a declining supply of booze. I order many dwarves to produce stone crafts, hoping to lower our stocks and provide trading goods for the human caravan. This summer should focus on expanding our food production and acquiring new sources of nutrition, to better accommodate our incredibly large population.

The food situation is getting out of hand, partially because most of the staff refuses to do their job. The manager simply doesn't care about filling out orders, because writing down to other people so they can work is too much work. the Bookkeeper isn't much better, as he refuses to give me the list of food we have available. No idea what types of seeds, fruits and plants we have. As such, it is very hard to kickstart a better farming industry, or to process what we already have into cooked meals. Just in case, I've ordered a millstone, a quern and a second farmer workshop installed, hopefully part of our plants can be transformed into food.
Apparently, this fortress will not be receiving a human caravan this year, so we'll have to survive on rock paste and leftover booze until fall.

I asked the farmers to construct new farming plots outside, for grape, cranberry and more. Apparently they built the thing right in the path of an archery range, and only told me about it after it was complete. the farming plots will have to stay there I'm afraid, as accidental shooting is a source of terrible deaths, but so is mass-starving.
It would seem that the farmers hate working outside, and also hate going outside because of the poorly designed, narrow path across a pond, and also they hate working in the first place. work on the farms is definitely slow.

In order to house more civilians, we are building a new set of rooms near the noble district. there is a nearby staircase leading to a large dinning room, so this is adequately located. With so many stone lying around, it seems safe to order a few of them turned into furniture. I'm not sure the people living here each need a weapon and armor rack, but i'm also certain they don't each need two giant stone boulders lying under a dangerous mountain.

The miners inform me that a new forgotten beast was heard across the walls of the caverns. That would make it the fourth resident of our underwater lake (that isn't a drowned dwarf). As with the others, this one is sealed off. (for now)

Reading the combat reports informs me that the only combats that took place during my rule were inbetween cavern inhabitants and forgotten beast. Very recently, the newcomer has been duking it out with an old foe of the fortress. It seems the forgotten beasts are keeping tab on their own population for us.

As summer comes to an end, I'm told that a peasant has begun work on a personal project, while a ghost has risen from the grave. Surely, this must be addressed.
All things considered, progress during summer has been slow, simple and quiet, with most of the fortress smoothing walls and moving furnitures, ordering stockpiles and improving the housing state. However, many dwarves have forsaken their job to ''chill out'' and do nothing, under the leadership of TheCheeseMaker. Many boulders remain unhauled, many things remain unmined, yet the population is uninterested in any of those things, and merely seek to throw parties at the marble table. Our food situation is becoming a real issue, and our continued happiness is placed upon the next caravan from the mountainhomes. On the bright side, the slow pace of life during summer left me with some time to further investigate the ex-overseers of the Crewedgears. (see annexed document)

Managed to convince people to overlook his child genocide in favor of joining a ''don't do work'' movement, essentially locking down any progress in the fortress. Seems innocent and lazy in appearance, but possess incredible management and organisation skills when needed. It has become clear that the local undercover terrorists are wary, and looking for any potential spy amidst the population. As soon as my yearly term as overseer is over, I shall request an extraction. It's a good thing that the workers are back in business, because we have much to do! the caravans are here, and with them, a chance to acquire food. With the food secured for a few months, it is time to turn my attention once more to housing our dwarves. Many citizens of the Crewedgears still don't hold claim to a bedroom, and I shall solve that. In the middle of the fortress, right under the main entrances and the food production, I design a new living quarter. Every room will be accessible via the staircase quickly, and a dinning hall + food stockpile shall make life easy for those here.

It seems that eldin00 the duke has a few requests of his own for his private bedroom. He wants a copper weapon rack in his office. I'm pretty sure he already has 5 weapon racks in said room, including two golden ones, but apparently this is important. I've set the magma sdmelters to slowly eat through our various ores, including tetrahedrite.
Btw, I now know why people were fervently mining bitumous coal and lignite earlier. because instead of using the forges downstairs, people have been producing charcoal and coal nonstop to power the old forges aboveground. Obviously I've put a stop to this.

The mayor also has demands, but this one will prove a bit more tricky. A large gem, and the way I see it that won't be the last one. I've designated some jewelers to the task, four or five of them, and they shall cut gems nonstop. Two workshops exist upstairs, near the giant 2-floor high useless room filled with gems, and I've added two other workshops in the lower masonry central room, alongside the existing gem pile. Hopefully that'll take care of that.

Before I leave crewedgears, I had the good idea to conduct some more investigation concerning the presumed terrorists. I managed to secure the help of one of the few ''survivor'' children, the only victims of TheCheeseMaker to make it past his devious purge. the child was all too happy to help me bring this treacherous scum to justice. I asked him and his friends to throw parties regularly, making sure the manage was invited and distracted. As such I found a letter dropped by Gwolfsky2, which prevent incriminating evidences for the two dwarves concerned. A copy of those letters is included in the annex of this report. Thanks, kid.

The main event of winter was the arrival of an Etin. I tried to kill it with a raising bridge, but the poor labbeling of bridges and levers madfe this impossible.

Here are some examples of levers, which all contain no information regarding their purpose. In another spot, two levers mention being used for a ''wodden bridge'' and a kaolinite bridge''. I also spotted Gwolfsky coming out of the battle. He informed me the reason he was not counting stocks was because he was learning to kill things with a sword. I told him he was exempted from military service, and sent him back to his office. We now have accurate accounts in the fortress once more. Sadly, PsychoAngel still doesnt know how to count, so we cannot know how much our wealth adds up to. Last reports indicated over 5 million total.

A jeweler grabbed exactly one piece of gemstone and started working on an artefact at the jeweler workshop. He wasn't done when I last saw him, but what he claims to be a ''mysterious construction'' is most obviously a large gem.

The old crypts have been finished with more golden statue, and a stone floor should prevent any fungi trees to overwhelm the area. It's not ideal, but the dead should rest easier.

The new crypt is also finished, sporting high-value sarcophagi for 24 dwarves. The place is worthy of a metropolis such as this one. Don't worry about the golden furnitures, I've had the idlers gather gold, smelt it and carry it back up for the whole season.

In addition to tombs and a hospital, those new rooms are now mostly complete, thanks to my imposed ''no lazyness'' policy. Every member of the fortress is now housed, and the children that lack a room are actually living with their parents. The dinning hall staffed with various masterwork statues has already become a favorite spot for parties and meetings.

The introduction of bedrooms and a non-zero amount of food has won the fort over, and according to an early winter census, 111 dwarves were ecstatic, and 77 more were very happy. The total rounds up to 135 ecstatic dwarves at the end of the season. With exactly zero deaths, my rule as overseer and special agent for the Ministry of Not Dying Horribly was a success. the place is now safer, more confortable, and I managed to unearth the criminal activities of two previous overseers.

First, I'm not sure why we're writing letters to each other. We live in the same fortress, and our rooms aren't even that far from each other. All writing letters will do is leave a paper trail so that anyone who wanted could discover what we are saying to each other. Maybe we should meet in person.
I noted in your letter that you said you are not a terrorist. This is good, for I too am not a terrorist, because terrorists are evil people who use fear to attempt to control people, and I am not one. We should get together sometime and discuss how we're both not terrorists.
Now to the main point of my letter. You implied that you wanted me to drown Urist Dwarfperson. While I agree that the overseer needs to be...removed from power, I feel that drowning is not the best way to accomplish the task. It's too obvious, too likely. Both of us have bad track records with drowning people, so others would immediately suspect us.
Meet me at a later date in your office. I feel that something is not quite right in the fortress, like someone is watching. I wish to speak with you in private, where we can talk without fear of eavesdroppers.

He turned to the young clerk who had masqueraded as his son for the last year. ''I'll have a letter to deliver before the afternoon is over. Make sure it reaches Crewedgears and isn't detected. Use our highest channels.'' The clerk nodded.

As Gwolfski’s “successor” can no longer continue, it falls upon myself to again take a more active hand in the overseeing of our fortress. We appear to have prospered since I last set aside the day-to-day administration. Our population has risen to 231 dwarves, and my previous work to get adamantine and steel production moving has paid off well, as we now have an abundance of steel bars and adamantine wafers. And steel and adamantine arms and armor have been produced, though it appears someone let smiths of moderate skill work with the blue metal.

I check, and we have plenty of brewable items, and we have functional stills. So it seems that the problem is simply that nobody thought to order any drinks to be brewed. I note that we have forgotten beasts lurking in the caverns. Fortunately, the caverns are presently secured, so we can deal with them if and when we choose. (assuming, that is, that I can work out which levers operate the various bridges).
With the magma forges and smelters fully up and running, we no longer need the conventional forges. I order them dismantled. I also order space to be dug for additional magma forging operations.
Someone appears to have begun building a system for bringing magma to the surface via minecarts… but apparently with the intent of building an artificial magma lake in the archery range, rather than trying to move the magma industry closer to the surface. The system does not appear to currently be operational, and no instructions on its use or construction can be found.

It seems that one of our previous overseers saw fit to leave a portion of the fortress open for access to the river, just below the waterfall. This section is now flooding. I’ve ordered walls built in an attempt to stem the flow of water.

What is being called the second great flood of Crewedgears is now contained. Due to some dwarves preferring to throw parties over building walls and doors, we lost more hallways than I originally had hoped, and some unused bedrooms. We will also need to dig some new access tunnels to the zoo, but the majority of the fortress now should be safe from this latest flood. Investigations of what has caused the river to overflow its banks are underway, but I suspect it to be one of Gwolfski’s water projects. Unfortunately, the child Erush Zulbanenseb was washed into deep water and drowned.

The cause of the flooding has been confirmed. The river was blocked by floodgates to the north of the fortress. This blockage left the inflow from the waterfall nowhere to drain to, raising the river level until it overflowed into the fortress. I’ve ordered a lever constructed and linked to these floodgates, so that they can be opened to release the excess water. Hopefully, the flooded sections can be reclaimed.

On other topics, now that the floodgates blocking the river have been opened, the waters are beginning to recede.The upper of the 2 flooded levels should clear out enough to begin building pumps to clear the lower level within a few months. I’ve ordered that production of stone blocks begin in earnest, and will begin on the keep itself once block supplies have reached sufficient levels.

I’m not an evil dwarf. I want the history books to know that. I want, when they think of me, to think of me as a hero. I am TheCheeseMaker, I do what I do because I thought it must be done, not because I enjoy it. Everything I’ve done has been for the good of the world.

When Gwolfski first came to me, to ask me to join his cause, he told me that it was so that Armok would not destroy the world. As long as chaos exists, the world becomes interesting. Interesting means Armok is happy, which means protection and safety. So by doing the so-called ‘terrorist actions,’ I was actually saving it.
But all this is a lie.
Gwolfski never was part of an organization to protect the world. He never spoke with others who have lost their worlds. He has never even seen a vision. For all I know, he made up everything about Armok.
He is a genius. An evil genius, but a genius none-the-less. I know this now, after what he told me. He told me of how he lied. He told me of how, when he recruited me, he wanted only to see the innocents hurt. And I had helped him with his monstrous goals.
I quickly knew that Gwolfski needed to be eliminated. No longer can his reign of terror exist here. I thought long and hard about how to beat him. How do you defeat an evil genius who can rally entire fortresses to his cause, who can trick me, a smart guy, into believing his ridiculous cause for years?
Then it hit me. I cannot outsmart a man as intelligent as he is. I cannot beat him in a straight fight either, since he convinced me to place him in the military all those years ago. But I can out-stupid him. I can do something so rash, so unexpected, it is bound to kill him. I've thought of this plan for at least a few seconds, so it's foolproof. But when the history books call me insane, know now that they are wrong. Know that this is, by far, the most intelligent decision I have ever made.

My name's Taupe, and as you predicted, I've been chosen as the newest overseer. Eldin00 is stepping down after a busy year of dealing with flooding and forgotten beasts and all those things! I received a few books from you and I've read most of them. I'll do my best, I promise! I'll also be looking out for criminals, altho I don't know what they look like.

Duke Eldin00 told me that during his term, he began working on his dream: A giant tower atop the fortress, hosting wonderful bedrooms. The book say that Happy dwarves are safe dwarves so I decided to continue his project. That way criminals will think I'm just following orders from the nobility, ah! We had ten thousand rocks around, yet the miners were busy getting more. I get that they want to make a uniform project with a single kind of stone, but I decided it's simpler to use that hollowed-out mountain we already have. All further mining in this area have been put on hold. Masons have been conscripted, and are producing stone blocks on repeat.

People are complaining about FPs, so I found a way to deal with it. Slaughtering many animals could help, and prevent people from going hungry! Oh god memories why is everything sent to die the animals are happy to help, they know they taste good and will make us happier this way.

Scary monsters appear, but they told me it can't reach the fortress. Walls make us safe and happy! never open the caverns again. Duke Eldin00 still comissioned our best artist to create a coffin, just to be sure.

To reassure people, I've moved nice furniture to the last row of rooms comissioned by the friendly minister man. Now everyone has a bed, except the children. But that's fine because I've been told children are the worse and just deserve to die I'll have them live in the tower they'll be so amazed by my project.
To honor all my horribly discarded friends our fallen, I mined around the graveyard and put some nice stone blocks there. People are busy producing blocks of all kind, and I'm going to put people on different jobs while waiting for a specific type of block to pile up.

Messthos' location has been found! Someone dug a tunnel and locked him in there, sealing his body by building a road over the entrance. this reeks of foul play. his body is being retrieved and buried as I write. The sand corridor in the middle of the fort is being filled with block flooring, and renamed the ''Messthos commemorative Corridor''. People threw a party.
Didn't help a guy who started the year depressed. he fell into melancholy and died recently. nothing I could do. dodok the carpenter is constantly throwing tantrums. Good news, a baby was born! I told the mother she could take care of him instead of dropping it in a pit with all the other babies This fortress is filled with joy!

The renovation projects continue. This room is outfitted with kaolinite blocks, while the soap-making facility is being renovated with diorite walls and cherry floorboards, at the request of local resident Psychoangel.

Uh oh, a roc came in recently! A creature so large it almost dwarfs the tower projects. It came in so fast that nobody could save the poor citizen Cog, but makrsdwarf Nil held the beast at bay long enough to gather the nearby militia and slay the creature.

Also on the day right after, a werelizard pounced across the bridge, and attacked a group of residents. One got flipped into the river several levels below, while the rest were eviscerated on the spot. Oh god why is this happening all over again.

It seems a lot of people are depressed from what happened two weeks ago. Some of them are sinking into depression. Of course when grown ups are affected by the savage deaths of people around them, it's okay to pay attention. I began renovating the workshop area, replacing buckets of dust and mud and saplings with actual stone.

Improvements are progressing! The fortress now looks a wee bit less depressing! Some engravers are hard at work in the lower levels too! to speed up the creation of our ton of golden furniture, I've commissioned 4 new magma forges, and some new metal bar stockpiles, along with a hundred bins to store them.

Well, there we go! the roof of the tower building is not complete yet, because the glassmakers are super-lazy. the rest of the structure is sound and complete. The lower level is mostly furnished and ready to welcome residents. the second level is being outfitted as I write this. I should have time to send a few fresh cabinets and tables to the third level before my rule as overseer is over.
I'm sorry i couldn't locate any criminals so far, I've been so busy with giving orders and making people not go too insane.

Chapter 1 (History Lessons)

On 125, Gwolfski argues with the dwarven “glorious” king resulting in banishment and the establishment of a dwarven outpost, Crewedgears. The construction of stockpiles, workshops are threatened by hippos and cave crocodiles. Effort are focused on digging down, establishing stone, forge, glass industry. Migrants with children are noted, and the establishment of farms, offices, and trade depot.
Mea yawns: Do I need to hear the minutiae of digs and shops and offices?
Historian frowns: On 126, Salmuek the Carpenter focuses on meeting the needs of the citizens by expanding the food choices, more living spaces, establishing the military hierarchy, architects a central fortress layout, and beginning of walls and moats.
Mea interrupts: See, I don’t need to know all of that. Tell me about the population, migrants, children, deaths, outside enemies, and military, and enemies within. And stay to the point so I can see where the danger lies.
Historian: Fine. On 126, More migrants with children arrives. A human female were-monitor was caught in a cage trap. More migrants came in autumn and trade with mountainhome.
Mea: Better. A were-monitor lizard?
Historian: It is caught in a cage. Don’t interrupt anymore.
2 Granite, 136
Historian: On 127, PsychoAngel Sprinkletrades, Le Grand Soaper mines for metals, makes soap. Yes, soap is important.
On spring, PsychoAngel wants peace with elves because he finds the elves to be good trading partner.
Migrants arrive. Dig to find cavern continues. Lots of gold found.
“A river accidentally.“ Yes that means deaths happen. And more waterfall deaths, again.
On summer, cavern is finally discovered with lots of water and more gold. And more migrants come.
On autumn and winter, a hospital wing is created.
A bronze colossus, Gleamfight the Oily Persuasions, killed animals outside, and found its way inside, killing children and doctors with a pair of trousers.
The armory is still working on the orders, but the military prevailed with Obok Targetpaddle credited with the kill of the colossus.
Aquifer flooding happens, and another cavern discovered.
Minotaur Zureng T. is another unwanted visitor shut outside.
Public tombs are created with plans for more proper tombs.
No adamantine yet, but have gold, and steel weapons.

3 Granite, 136
Historian: On 128, TheCheeseMaker summarizes: a minotaur rampages outside, a sleepless child in hospital will likely go insane, and bottom-half of the fort is flooding.
TheCheeseMaker sets goals.
The first goal is to kill the Minotaur Zureng T.
The Horse kicks The Minotaur in the head, dead.
The second goal is completed by sealing aquifer breach.
“Bloodfall Chasm” is named for the the waterfall that claims many more lives.
The third goal is to stop Bloodfall Chasm from murdering everyone.
Issue has been addressed with an acceptable 25% casualty rate.

Historian continues: The fourth goal is to fill Gwolfski’s private pool.
Fill Gwolfski's pool cancelled: Owner dead (by Bloodfall Chasm).
The fifth goal is in progress which is to rebuild the military.
There remains two military plus migrant new recruits of: 10 marksdwarves, 1 sworddwarf, and 1 macedwarf. Training orders are given immediately before any equipment are available.
The sixth goal is completed by engraving and setting down slabs to the fallen and giving peace to the ghost that haunts the halls.
The seventh goal of TheCheeseMaker is to kill all the children.
Mea interrupts: Kill all the children?
Historian ignores the interruption: One large room with 35 Children and the released human female were-monitor. The result is four children deaths, and the human having her skull caved in by the children.
Unknown if any children were infected, and they are left in the room until the next moon cycle. It is reported that the children slowly died of dehydration within three days of each other.
TheCheeseMaker claims “fun fact”: two graveyards in three years; population 82 with 115 coffins and slabs built.
A sleepless child went insane.
Nobles complain about rooms.
Military is training on the surface.

Historian: On 129, Eldin00 takes the seat of power, and searches for magma.

Magma is found, furnaces and forges built, adamantium processing center planned.

FBs duke it out in the caverns, Ngoso is dead.

Historian: Fifteen moon cycles are undocumented from Winter of 130 and all of 131; by the hands of Gwolf2ki.
Mea: So Eldin00 becomes duke, Iamblichos abruptly resigns, and Gwolf2ki has all of Crewedgears for fifteen moons?
Historian shrugs.

Historian: On 132, Adrian Roosevelt, special agent of the Ministry of Not Dying Horribly, arrives in the fortress of Ginetolon; the Crewedgears to investigate.

Investigate the infrastructure of the fortress.

The nice shooting tower that is sculpted constructed to look like a giant tree is in the middle of the fortress, is well in range when the invaders are already inside the fortress proper.
Year 8: 132 Spring Summary
A new crypt is designed.
Pillars are constructed for structural integrity.
More furniture stockpile created.
More bedrooms made.
New hospital design spread beds apart, but still based on “open space”.
There is a “no logs, no barrels” conundrum that is solved by more tree cutting.
No more fresh uncooked food, and low booze.
Year 8: 132 Summer Summary
Food issue, build mill, quern, farmer’s shop to handle the plants stock.
Conclusion: Lazy farmers.
More housing and furnishing orders.
A fourth FB in the caverns is heard, still sealed shut outside.

Work on bedrooms is progressing.

Chapter 3 (Elevate and Escalate)

I stride the halls of Crewedgears in my mismatched uniform: bismuth bronze mail shirt, iron helm, steel greaves, iron gauntlets, steel high boots, fine silver mace, willow wood shield, and ratty clothing. I actually witness my shirt fall off rotting away this morning.
A peasant approached me in the hall: “My husband Etur L., a planter has been missing for a week.”
I try my best and fail miserably consoling the peasant, “May his corpse be found fertilizing the earth, woman.”

I am lost looking for the farm plots.
Another peasant approached and notify me that Bomrek L., a farmer has slipped into depression.
I tell the peasant to inform Bomrek that is to do no other job except his labor of love, farming.
I went to spar outside the vomit smeared corner on the surface because I want to hit something hard.

I went looking for the monster manager TheCheeseMaker who is busy detailing floors.
Mea: Get up from that floor and get my steel armor orders going!
TheCheeseMaker looks at me with contempt: You have eight kids, right?
Mea narrows her eyes pointing an iron gauntlet on his chest with a low clear voice: You will do your job to get my steel armor understand? If I am not wearing fine steel by year’s end, you will wear these crap armor while it is being smelted.
TheCheeseMaker: Mea, your empty threats are just that, hollow. By the way, you see these new engravings?
Mea: Yeah, what about them?
TheCheeseMaker: This one is interpreted as “Dodok T, carpenter has slipped into depression.”
Mea:There’s a lot of that going.
TheCheeseMaker smirks: Oh, and rumor says Rovod, O., a trapper has been missing a week. Have a good day, Mea.
Mea is left agape. Two in depressions, and two missing.
I went back to sparring unable to wrap my mind with these sadness and missing individuals.
As I look at my surrounding on this surface barracks, I find it unsatisfactory with all 24 of us crowded in this corner armor stand.

One of the miners notified me that Vabok M, Weaponsmith has been found dead, dehydrated.
Somehow Vabok M. died in the cavern across water with no dry path getting there.
Further observation, there is a Doren U., Furnace Operator, and Bembul S., Stonecrafter down there also.
I ordered the miner to dig a tunnel above and carve stairs to rescue them.
I asked Gwolf2ki if we have any hatch covers available, and he responded that we have green glass hatch covers.
I instructed the miners to allow stairs access with hatch covers to the places they are tunneling.

I want the workers to put hatches and cage traps in the tunnels, and outside around the bridge in the cavern.
This cavern is very unsecured. I must ponder on this.
I also spent time examining the many stone stockpiles all over. I must create marble stockpile near the forges to use as flux, and disable marble from all other stone stockpiles.
