Title: The Arena Mode test, v2!
Post by: LordSlowpoke on April 12, 2010, 01:35:15 pm
This is a slightly redacted version of Ringmaster's old arena tournament, with some of the additions that were requested. Knowing my luck I'll be spending at least one week a day redacting a new ruleset, but here it is:

The whole point of this thread is to use arena mode to throw fights. Hopefully some forumites will create characters and I will pit them against each other in a fight to the death. The main point is to have fun, and I will be recording the fights and posting them on the DFMA (Link (http://mkv25.net/dfma/index.php)).

Rules

1. You can choose to have one fighter. This fighter can be chosen from any of the choices available in the Object Testing Arena of DF2010 (EXCEPT Megabeasts). Please use this form to request a fighter:

Species: (Dwarf, Human, Antman, etc. Remember, NO Megabeasts. Also, due to an apparent bug in the Arena, grimelings are also not allowed. And from the next tournament onwards, any beasties that are confirmed 'immortal' e.g. blizzardmen are disallowed. Due to popular request, ogres have been banned too.)
Gender: Male/Female
Weapon: (Iron short sword, rose gold warhammer, etc.)
Ammo: (If necessary: Iron/Gold/etc. Bolts/Arrows/Blowdarts)
Head Armour: (Iron/Gold/Silk/Wood/etc. Mask/Helm/Cap/None)
Hand Armour: (Iron/Gold/Silk/Wood/etc. Gauntlets/Gloves/Mittens/None)
Body Armour: (Iron/Gold/Silk/Wood/etc. Breastplate/Mail Shirt/None)
Foot Armour: (Iron/Gold/Silk/Wood/etc. High Boot/Low boot/None)
Leg Armour: (Iron/Gold/Silk/Wood/etc. Leggings/Greaves/None)
Shields: (Iron/Gold/Silk/Wood/etc. Shield/Buckler/None)
Skills: (See below for full list of skills)

To create your fighter, a points system will be used. It'll be very similar to the one used in Adventurer Mode. Everyone starts with 120 points and it can be allocated to any of these:

Weapon: All weapon types are free. (Short sword, warhammer, etc.) But only the first weapon is free. If you want to dual-wield, it is a 6 point cost.

Ammo: If ammo is needed for a weapon, then 20 wooden bolts/darts/arrows will be given for free at the start of every round. If you want higher quality ammunition, then it will cost.

Head Armour: Having no head armour is free.
Masks/Veils/Turbans/Headscarves are 5 points
Caps are 7 points
Helms are 10 points

Hand: No hand armour is free.
Mittens/Gloves are 5 points
Gauntlets are 8 points

Body: No body armour is free.
Coats/Shirts/Cloaks/Tunics/Togas/Capes/Vests/Dresses and Robes are all 5 points
Breastplates are 8 points
Mail shirts are 13 points

Leg: No leg armour is free.
Trousers/Loincloths/Thongs/Skirts/Short skirts/Long skirts/Braies are all 5 points
Greaves: 8 points
Leggings: 10 points

Foot: No foot armour is free
Shoes/Sandals/Chausses/Socks are all 5 points
Low boots: 7 points
High boots: 9 points

Shields: No shields are free.
Buckler: 6 points
Shield: 8 points

Materials: Special Alloys/Other Elements/Wood/Silk (E.g. Rose Gold/Lead/Saguaro/Cave spider. Two exceptions.) Are the weakest of the materials: 3 points
Copper, 2nd weakest: 5 points
Bronze/Bismuth Bronze, 3rd weakest: 8 points
Iron, 4th strongest: 12 points
Steel/Obsidian, 3rd strongest: 16 points
Adamantine, 2nd strongest: 25 points

Skilled: 23 points
Proficient: 31 points
Talented: 38 points
Adept: 42 points

Spoiler: Example Character (click to show/hide)

2. The rounds begin as soon as 16 competitors have signed up.

3. Each round consists of fights with certain rules. It may be one-on-one duels, two-on-two team fights, etc.

4. The winners of each round receive an extra 10 points that they may spend on upgrading equipment or skills.

5. There is no penalty for losing. This is just a bit of fun.

6. There may be a tournament-style competition held soon, however it largely depends on how much interest is generated. If there's enough for a good tournament, then I'll hold one.

7. Fights will be recorded on DF and posted on the DFMA.

8. If you have any suggestions on how this idea could be improved upon (Suggestions especially needed for the points system), please PM me.

Gauntlets and boots question:

If I wanted a character with more than one pair of hands/feet, would this be covered by a single "Gauntlets" or "High/Low Boots" purchase?

Also, material cost for leather?
Title: Re: The Arena Mode test, v2!
Post by: LordSlowpoke on April 12, 2010, 01:57:34 pm
Leather is under "other materials", thus 3 points.
And one pair of gauntlets and boots covers 2 hands/feet each, with the increase of 6 points per pair, unless you use different materials - then you use the price of the regular gauntlets + material price.
Gauntlets were used here as an example, same applies to boots.

Species: Antman
Caste: Drone (Male)
Weapon: Copper Spear [5]
Shield: Nether-cap Shield x3 [33]
Headwear: Nether-cap Helm [13]
Bodywear: Nether-cap Mail Shirt [16]
Legwear: Nether-cap Leggings [13]
Handwear: Nether-cap Gauntlets (two pairs) [17? 20?]
Footwear: Nether-cap High Boots [12]
Skill: Novice Shield User [5]

114 or 117 points. Does the second pair of gauntlets require the material cost?
EDIT: Accidentally read the starting points as 100.

I'd like to request a competitor.
Name: Zifnab
Species:  Merperson
Sex:  Male
Bronze Breastplate (16), Clownite Shield (33), Bronze great axe (8)
Professional Axeman (55)  Novice Shield User (5)
Total points:  117

Remember, If you place both competitors on the south side of the central platform, aquatic and nonaquatic can both not drown.

Apparantly this doesn't actually work.  The aquatics think they are drowning and stop moving.  Different entrant requested instead.

I think we may actually need to put a restriction on ogres...  Just checked the raws, and they're significantly larger than elephants.  Plus ogres can use all the armor and weapons.

By the way, Madjoe is going to slaughter everyone.  Just thought you should know.

In other news, I tried out a few aquatic combatants.  They don't appear to react properly in that little turbulent area south of the main arena, so I don't think that can exactly be termed an "equal zone".

However, setting up a specific arena might work.  Just use the magma and water tools to build walls around an area that has a number of tiles divisible by seven.  Then just apply the correct amount of water so that it turns into an even 4/7 across the board.  Aquatics should work properly, I'll just run a few tests to see if this is true.

Or you could just assign a "given" amount of swimming skill to land-based characters and then have them fight in the big pool in the southwest.

EDIT:  As an aside, you can't make weapons or armor out of non-"nugget" stones.  Obsidian doesn't exist in the arena.

EDIT2:  Placing 16 tiles of water in a 4x7 arena created a perfectly equal zone of 4/7 water.  However, aquatics still did not act naturally.  They can survive without drowning, but they can't move.  If something gets close to them they will lash out at it, otherwise they'll just sit there and glare at their opponent.

This is still better than south of the main arena, where aquatics will more than likely receive a handicap of the "winded" status due to fluctuating water levels.

The greatest amount of freedom is still offered by the pool with a granted swimming ability (heck, non-humanoids get swimming for free anyways, why not make it official?).  The landlubbers will be at a slight disadvantage, but this might give some use to the otherwise pointless "swimming" skill.  The higher their rank in it, the better they'll move in the water.

And I still haven't found anything yet that can defeat Madjoe's character.  And would it be at all possible to dispense with the clown terms?

Please?

EDIT3:  New Dilemma; should undead creatures be allowed into the arena?  And if so, should there be an associated cost?

If it helps, undead creatures are now pitiably weak.

Figured i would put in a new post instead of edit,my post is a bit up there.
The ogres are tough, but not invincible by a long shot. From what i have run,it comes down to mostly luck.

Edit: in fact,i have yet to see a winning ogre that hasn't bled to death seconds after the fight is over.

Trolls are size 250,000.
Elephants are size 5,000,000.
Ogres are size 6,000,000.

You're right, they're not invincible.  But there's not a single other non-megabeast land animal that even comes close to their raw power.

Speaking of which...

I'll go on and count the points for you guys and put you in the roster, and add some stuff from Kagus' post (thanks for that one anyway, I'll ban ogres and give stuff a proper name - mainly copied Ringmaster's post)

Yet the irony was there when you asked for one after saying we need to restrict them.
So Kagus, madjoe, Doctor Spaztic, I'm afraid you'll have to redo your characters. And zifnab, would you kindly check if merpersons are in the arena? Or can be modded to be in it?

Well merpersons are available, but they only seem to move around occaisonally in the place I mentioned, so to avoid problems with aquatic vs. nonaquatic, I'd like to change my entrant to:

Name: The Shadow
Species: Nightwing
Skills:  Professional Spearuser (55)

EDIT:  There are some faulty listings on the character sheet.  Orgrinder's leather fez should be 8 points, not 5.  NuNu's bronze helm is also valued the same as a copper helm.

It would appear that no one except CAN_LEARN creatures can acquire skills.  This means that all the animal and elementman characters are completely wasting their points on skills.

It would appear that, no, not even yeti can acquire skills.

Trolls can learn, however, and they're only moderately smaller than yetis and sasquatches.  Plus, they have a better natural attack (goring people with their tusks).

This, of course, only makes the nightwing even more powerful.  I didn't really know what these things were until I ran a few tests with Zifnab's character.

Damn dude...  Those things are evil.  They have a natural bite attack with the added bonus of sucking blood, they can grasp and wield weapons and wear armor, plus they are completely unaffected by pain, nausea, suffocation, or over-exertion from extended combat.

Furthermore, they have a relatively simple body plan, which means that the adamantine mail shirt he's wearing protects all his bodyparts except for his head, feet and hands.

Oh, yeah, and they have the CAN_LEARN tag.

EDIT:  And it also appears as though they don't bleed.  This means that the ONLY way to kill one is an instant-kill attack.

Exactly.  And that's a problem, because it means that all the other interesting races will get neglected.

Blugh...  Do we dare suggest that yet another non-megabeast creature get banned?  Maybe there's another way around this...

Or people can simply use a race they like instead of trying to make themselves overpowered. Its just a simple forum game, nobody should take  it even remotely seriously. But of course they will take it seriously, and try and be the most overpowered.

Hey, I'm using an antman with a copper spear and a near-full set of wooden armor.

If it's any consolation.

You've also got three shields.

Speaking of which, your character was a pain to test because of all the items I had to put on him.  Yikes.

Oh, also, why the sodding hell do elephants KICK?!  They've got two perfectly lethal ivory death-makers sticking out of their gob, and they insist on instead nudging people around with their stumpy little legs.

Crazy bastards.

Also, I've been considering the prospect of a dark gnome character.  Turns out, there may actually be a reason to take one...  But the problem is that if anyone so much as sneezes on him he shatters.  And since he has to use the same number of points as everyone else, he can't "skill up" to match the competition.

Still though, he managed to solo an unarmored elephant.  That's not bad.

I do find it fun to play the arena looking at the advantages and dis-advantages of each race. With the new armor and weapon system,it feels a bit more like an actual battle.Although it will be nice when we get armor that covers the face, neck,so forth.

Time to throw the tag everywhere it seems!
And there was this question about undead creatures before, if I recall correctly - yes, they're allowed, I'm gonna get 0.31.03 just to torment the raw files and the arena. Skeletons only, just for the sake of zombie dump-chars that will die in ~10 seconds *shrug*

Tigermen have CAN_LEARN, so I'm fine.

Also, nightwings are incredibly powerful. I wouldn't mind them being banned.

EDIT:  There are some faulty listings on the character sheet.  Orgrinder's leather fez should be 8 points, not 5.  NuNu's bronze helm is also valued the same as a copper helm.

Ahhh missed that, Umm either drop the Fez all together Or If I've got enough points drop it to Silk/cloth if that would make 5 or less instead :-)
Title: Re: The Arena Mode test, v2!
Post by: Zifnab on April 15, 2010, 01:53:41 pm
Couple of questions:

Is skeletal going to cost anything?

Ogres are banned.  A few people think nightwings are way to powerful.  Are there any other creatures besides these and megabeasts that people think are way to powerful?  I'd like to know, just in case I need to submit another character instead of the nightwing.

What are people's thoughts as to a tiered system?   What I mean by this is instead of the outright banning of stronger creatures, they get a reduced number of points.  So tier 1 monsters like ogres might get 40 points, tier 2 like iron men: 80, and tier 3 like polar bears or dwarves: 120.  I think the tier system would work especially well if tournaments like this take off.
Title: Re: The Arena Mode test, v2!
Post by: Strange guy on April 15, 2010, 02:44:43 pm
I was thinking of doing my own arena and decided if I ever did I would do a tier system based on sizes, due to them being so important in the combat system. In addition there would be additional 'dangerous creature' modifiers you have to pay on top, either 10,20,30 or 40 points, with say an iron man paying 40 extra, a nightwing 30 and a zombie dwarf 30. Doing tiers for all creatures could work better than this, but there are a lot of creatures in df. (I would also overdo the materials costs with weapons and armour costs separate and with everything else in more appropriate places, eg lead is way better than wood, perhaps as good as bronze)

Weapon: Lead flail [3] ( Would that be right? Free weapon, 3 points for lead?  :-\ )

When I get to that point, there are too many people dead and I get tantrum spirals. Time to mess with the game's inner workings. Thought it'd never get down to this point.
Also, added people to the roster.

Sorry man, you need to specify what the breastplate is made of. I can't accept this one.
Anywho, the tournament is officially starting and signups are over, I'll use a RNG to get the fights...

Round 1
Doomshifter, Batman VS Orgrinder, Polar Bear
Winner: Orgrinder
Link to movie (http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-2158-round1fight1)
That was a pretty much intense fight, with the both charging at each other, but Orgrinder was able to block Doomshifter's attacks using his iron breastplate. When Doomshifter finally latched onto his leg, tearing it apart, Orgrinder just pulled him out, shook him around, and ripped out his lower body.
Gâsh, Fireman VS A_fey_dwarf, Troglodyte
Winner: A_fey_dwarf
Link to movie (http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-2159-round1fight2)
I didn't expect this one coming to be honest, since all shots were blocked from both sides - but then A_fey_dwarf managed to attack his feet, passing the steel high boots - and it went downhill for Gâsh from there. The fight continued for a while after that, but A_fey_dwarf got a lucky shot and stabbed his opponent's head clean off. A_fey_dwarf went without damage, and as such will get a bonus picked by RNG at tne end of the round.

Bjorn, Polar Bear VS Cannon Fodder, Human
Winner: Cannon Fooder
Link to movie (http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-2162-round1fight3)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Flagro, Human VS The Shadow, Nightwing
Winner: The Shadow
Link to movie (http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-2163-round1fight4)
The Shadow took initiative the very frame that the fight started, stabbing him all over while Flagro's flail did next-to-none damage, managing to only break it's bone before he died.

Title: Re: The Arena Mode test, v2!
Post by: LordSlowpoke on May 10, 2010, 08:29:42 am
...That was pretty obvious, thank you, but every winner gets 5 points per round. And something added, if it's a "perfect" fight. I was thinking about some really small supporting creature that'll reappear every round, or a cost-less item upgrade (for example, bronze goes to steel, and the point cost is still like bronze). Might be overpowered when used on adamantine.

I've already illustrated that it's possible to create an area using magma-cast walls and then fill it with a set amount of liquid to create a uniform 4/7 water level over everything.  The sea-critter doesn't move around, but at least it doesn't drown either.

Or you could just make it a skeleton.  There's that.
