Title: Ocean Corp. Systems Test (Murder Arena RTD)
Post by: Egan_BW on March 12, 2016, 02:57:48 am
What is this?
This is a simulated reality, commonly known as a "Roll to Dodge", in which several participants perform tasks to their hearts desires. Though it is the intent to cause these "Players" to joyfully murder each other, that is not the sole possible outcome.

Where am I?
You are currently in a space between spaces between spaces, en route to be inserted into an area that dynamically encompasses several scenes from real, unreal, and transreal existences.

What is the purpose of this exercise?
We here at Ocean Corp. commonly design and produce various strange and unusual items to sell to physical beings, such as yourself. However, we find it difficult to test these designs ourselves, and as such must recruit such beings in order to prove the viability of our product in practice. In addition, we worry that small imperfections in the fabric of meta-reality may cause larger problems for the pan-multiverse down the line, so these tests have also been optimised to diagnose such imperfections and hopefully find a solution.

Why was I selected for this exercise?
We rolled some dice.

Anyway, it seems that you are approaching the destination, so simply fill out the following form:

Visual Description:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Non-visual Description: A deeply religious Independent Puritan, as well as a great military commander, he sees himself as driven by God to victory. He was a cruel and effective Lord Protectorate of England before his unfortunate assassination, leading many campaigns against the cyber-scots and the Irish mechsuits, as well as several stunning victories over the Polonium-fueled Royalist tank regiment.
How did you get here?: Blown up by a Royalist plot after a reign of terror as Lord Protectorate of England, with a nuclear device constructed by Catholics. His divine Will was too strong to let his soul dissipate, and here seemed like as good a place as any.

Feel free to make a humanoid motile character with those stats though. :P

Alright, guess we'll start with these five.
Before we start proper, everyone choose one of the following special items:

Subversion
Blinds
Hardware
Relativity
Justice
Ripper
Doooooodge
Magic Calculator
Bad Idea
Rubber

And no, I'm not telling you what they do. That's part of the Fun.

And it's a bloody big wont too, so everyone had better keep out the damn way.

Title: Re: Ocean Corp. Systems Test (Murder Arena RTD)
Post by: Egan_BW on March 14, 2016, 05:01:23 pm
Suddenly, you all find yourselves in a small, pentagon-shaped room. Inset in each of the five walls is an automatic sliding door. The walls themselves are lined with whirring machinery and important-looking pipes. Above your heads are a series of catwalks, and above that is a glass roof, through which you can see space, and a familiar red planet; Mars.
In the center of the room, there is a great pile of corpses, all wearing what appear to be maintenance uniforms. Your hands are bound in front of you with electronic handcuffs, on which a display counts down from 5 seconds.

Ollie:
Clutched in your left hand is a rather massive and ornate handgun. [Adaptability: 3] You notice that on the side of the gun is a picture of a rather angry man in a nice... sailor cap or something?

Misha:
You appear to be wearing either a large backpack or a parachute. [Adaptability: 6] Before you can react, metal tendrils emerge from holes in the backpack, and tear apart your restraints. [Toughness: 2] This understandably freaks you out, and you fall right on your fat ass. You're now free, but laying on the ground.

Sir Jorge:
In one of you hands, you're carrying a small dagger, inscribed with glowing arcane symbols. Not a sword, but you can work with this. [Adaptability: 3] You get the feeling you could open things up with this.

Buster:
You would appear to be holding a small one-handed hammer, with a massive stone head. [Adaptability: 2] It feels too heavy to use effectively as a weapon.

Jürgen:
You have a small electronic device strapped to your chest, which glows with an internal green light. [Adaptability: 6] A small green bubble appears around you (which only you can see, though you might not realize) that appears to move with your thoughts. Neato.

A few of the corpses in the center of the room being to shudder and move.

You bruisers, get on either side of me, I'll use the firearm, you cover the sides. And you across from me, come over here, Sir, and bring that automaton with you, it might come in useful."

Back into the nearest corner, discharge my firearm at the first corpse.

Buster waits patiently for the countdown to end and for the wristcuffs to open.

Check the doors. They're probably locked, aren't they?

If they aren't get one open.

If they are, scrum into the corpsepile as a distraction for the rest of the team to do their thing.

As they get to their feet, the corpses look confusedly and hungrily around the room.

Corpses: [Reactions: 2] 5
Ollie: [Reactions: 2] 5
Misha: [Reactions: 3] 4
Jorge: [Reactions: 6] 2
Buster: [Reactions: 1] 6
Jürgen: [Reactions: 3] 4

Actions will be taken in this order:
Jorge
Misha & Jürgen
Ollie & Corpses
Buster

Use Ripper to open my restraints. Then see what else Ripper can do. Kill any zombies that get to close while screaming about the saving their souls through killing them.
You excitedly fumble with the dagger in your hands, trying to open the handcuff with them. [Adaptability+Precision: 3] You manage to turn the knife around enough to scratch at your bonds, but this surprisingly has little effect on the metal shackles.

Sprint torwards Ollie and attempt to have the tendrils attack what ever gets near me...except sir jorge and Ollie.
[Knowledge: 3] You decide that sprinting isn't really necessary, and jog over to Oliver Cromwell, huddling up close to him.
[Adaptability: 3] Your metal tendrils spool out of their housing, seemingly ready to strike.

((Do you have something against European timezones?))

"Right! As the military commander here, I suggest you all listen to me, and we may get to safety with nobody important dying. Knight-like fellow, you can be my second in command, better get slashing! You bruisers, get on either side of me, I'll use the firearm, you cover the sides. And you across from me, come over here, Sir, and bring that automaton with you, it might come in useful."

Back into the nearest corner, discharge my firearm at the first corpse.

"Sure thing!"

Jürgen jogs on this guy's side. Move the bubble on corpses near him to see what it does.
You also go to meet the famous Oliver Cromwell, licking his oblivious face.
[Adaptability: 5] You instinctively move the yellow area to cover the whole pile, making sure not to touch yourself or any of your new friends in the process. It would appear that you can cover any area with the effect, though greater areas take a small toll on your focus.

Around this time, everyone's cuffs tick down to zero, and unlock.

Quote from: Corpses
What is this? Feast upon the living!
[Corpses Toughness: 5] Six zombies awaken, and they look mad.
... But ineffective, as they struggle to move, but are stopped by some unseen force.
Ollie back off, and fires one round at the prone corpses. [Precision+Adaptability: 4] His shooting isn't impressive, but the bullet finds a way to it"s mark on it's own.
As the massive bolt collides with the field that Jürgen created, it instantly slows down, and then explodes with the force of a small grenade. the shrapnel that enters the field is similarly slowed down, and it all mysteriously misses Ollie, but the two people standing next to him are not so lucky.

[Jürgen Kinesthetics: 1]
[Misha Kinesthetics+Adaptability: 6]
Acting of it's own volition, Misha's backpack shoots out several steel cables, which attach to nearby walls and yank him out of the way.
[Misha Toughness: 3]
Misha drops to the ground on his feet, and looks a bit sick, but is otherwise fine.
[Shrapnel Assholishness: 5]
Pieces of shrapnel tear though Jürgen's heart, lungs, brain, and crotch. [Jürgen Toughness: 2] He is dead.
Relativity detaches itself from Jürgen's chest, and clatters to the floor nearby. At the same time a blue light emerges from his head, and flies into Ollie's head.

Oliver Cromwell may now increase one stat by one.

The moment that Jürgen dies, the zombies can move again, slightly more pissed.
Buster waits patiently for the countdown to end and for the wristcuffs to open.

Check the doors. They're probably locked, aren't they?

If they aren't get one open.

If they are, scrum into the corpsepile as a distraction for the rest of the team to do their thing.

Action edited.
You stare blankly at all that just transpired, fixated on the madness of the current events.
[Toughness: 4] Well, at least it wasn't you!

You take a leisurely look at the doors. They don't appear to have handles [Knowledge: 1] which probably means they're locked, yeah.
You decide to go swim in the open sea of corpses, where they can easily tear you into little plastic pieces.
They don't do that yet though, because it's the end of this monstrous, bloodsoaked turn.
You make a small salute to the fallen. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1qXQRpF08E)

Next turn, people will act in this order:
Jorge
Misha
Corpses
Ollie
Buster

((Do you have something against European timezones?))
No, this is just what the dice told me to do. >_>  <_<

Also I'm changing the system midway through, so I'm going to reroll everyone's initiative. You got some pretty bad ones imho, so this might be good.
I'm going to basically use X-Com's Time Units, so before you can do a new action you have to wait for the old one to complete.
Reacting is an action for some reason, so you all do that.

[Corpses Reactions: 1] Corpses will take 6 TUs to react.
[Ollie Reactions: 1] Ollie will take 6 TUs to react.
[Misha Reactions: 6] Misha will take 2 TUs to react.
[Jorge Reactions: 6] Jorge will take 2 TUs to react.
[Buster Reactions: 2] Buster will take 5 TUs to react.

So Misha and Jorge will act first the next round. they can either take and action right then or wait until conditions change before acting, effectively as a kind of "overwatch".
The time that various common actions take is listed below, once that time is up, that character can act again instantly, so turns might have several actions from one character and none from another. I'll just go down the list in chronological order until I come to a place where I don't know what a character's next action will be.

Finally, I have created a completely indecipherable and arkane system! Look upon my works, ye skubs, and be salty!

Attention, we'll be dropping a new participent in 5TUs.

T+1:
For a moment, everything is still, seemingly shocked into submission by the violent and unpredictible events of the past 10 seconds.

T+2:
try to kill the zombies with Ripper.
Go on overwatch, basically evade anything that attacks and stab it back.
Ser Jorge and Misha react first. Misha takes a passive approch, opting to stand back and strike the zombies as they come, but the brave (and foolish!) knight is more proactive stance, leaping forward and sprinting into the center of the room, into snuggling range. [Kinesthetics: 4] It will take him 1TU to get there.

T+3:
While everyone else's heads are still spinning, Jorge comes to the first corpse and draws back to strike.

T+4:
[Kinesthetics+Adaptability: 4] He strikes the corpse in the belly with his arcane weapon [Reality's Whim: 2] and the corpse's entire lower body distorts and shrinks, compressing to a singular point before disappearing completly.
Jorge will recover from his attack in 2TUs, at T+6.

T+5
Back away from the murder pool. Bonk any corpse that approaches.

If I still have time, try to wear the rubber. Never not use protection.

While the Corpses are distracted, Buster scurries back away from the pile. He will next act in 2TUs, at T+7.

You fall through hatch in the floorboards and suddonly find yourself on a sandy beach. You look up at where you came from, but there's nothing there but overcast sky. The way back inland is blocked all around by impassible cliffs, and the sea looks unfriendly. You're alone here, and there appear to be no exits from this area. As you realize this, a wooden door shimmers and appears in the cliff face.
On your forehead is a generic black blindfold.

NEXT turn will begin with T+6. Players will be able to act at these times:
T+6: Corpses, Ollie, Misha, Jorge (All will act.at the same time)
T+7: Buster.
Gunther is outside this time bubble, so he can do whatever outside of combat.

I'll make a map when I get home. If you're uncertian about your position, wait till then.

Shoot corpses.
 Improve Kinesthetics by one.

"Don't disrupt my firearm use with your unauthorised magical assaults! Oh wait... he's dead."
(I'll assume that you want to do a snap shot and not an aimed shot due to the close range. In the future specify this and if you're firing multiple shots, if you want to shoot as quickly as possible or take time to aim each shot.)

Try to figure out more about Doooodge.

Spontaneously collapse due to overburdened connection.
TU+6:
Oliver Cromwell takes aim at the melee in the center of the room, an excellent choice for gaining more levels. He'll be ready to take a shot at TU+7.
In the middle of said melee, Ser Jorge is facing off against two Corpses, who are trying to tackle him and bring him down. They will collide at TU+7.

One Corpse breaks away to chase Buster.
[Corpse3 Kinesthetics: 3] VS. [Buster Kinesthetics: 3] [v_v Tiebreaker coin toss: Buster]
But Buster is faster than a shambling corpse, and it's left there looking confused and sad.

As this is all happening, Misha is pondering about Doooodge in a corner.
[Adaptability+Knowledge: 2] He thinks very hard. It's a backpack. It has many small hole in it, through which animated metal cables emerge, and are controlled by Misha's mind. Other than that, he has no idea. He is somewhat distracted, and will be back in the game at TU+9

We can level up?

Huddle with the other test subjects, and offer myself as a plastic meatshield.
(Just kill your fellow players, and you'll gain more power than you ever imagined.)
TU+7:
Buster easily barely outruns the running Corpse, into a corner of the room occupied by absolutely no other test subjects. Sorry.
However, he does run close enough to the southerly automatic door that it slides open!

[What's Behind the door?!: 2]
On the other side, buster can see a small, empty room with a neatly made wooden door on the other end.
[Knowledge: 4] Despite his plastic face, he can smell salty Ocean air though the door.

The Corpse once again sets it's rotting eyes on Buster, and again shambles it's way closer to him. It'll get to him on TU+9.

Meanwhile, in the center of the room, Things are about to get spicy.
Cromwell aims at the corpsepile, not bothering to aim too carefully, the blast should take care of that, after all! [Ollie takes pity?: Haha, who do you take me for?]
[Corpse1 Kinesthetics: 3]
[Corpse2 Kinesthetics: 6]
[Sir Jorge Kinesthetics+Adaptability: 6]
[Oliver Cromwell Precision+Adaptability: 2]

Ollie takes a shot and is knocked back a step, as the extremely menacing bullet whizzes harmlessly past, and extremely menaces the door on the other end of the room.
Sir Jorge strikes at one of the Corpses as it tackles him, the other Corpse stumbles and grabs hold of his leg.
As Ripper pierces the Corpse's flesh, a bubble of distortion opens from it, and grows to cover both Jorge and the Corpse he's engaged with. In a moment, they're both gone, along with the other Corpse's hands.
[Reality's Whim: 2]
The space where they stood is replaced with a chunk of earth, but the combatants are nowhere to be seen.
(Don't worry MidnightJaguar, you're not dead yet.)

[Corpse1 Toughness: 1] The shock of losing two hands causes the Corpse to collapse.

Remember that door that Ollie blasted open? Well [what's behind this door?!: 2]
Through the mangled remains of the door can be seen what appears to be a waiting room, with some potted plants, above-average paintings on the walls, and a comfy-looking chair in a small inset in the wall. at the end of the room is a heavily-reinforced metal door.

Walk through the door, take a good look around, unbutton the shirt completely to show off my abs and lean against the doorframe.

"I'm here. I'm so fucking hot."
You open the loosely-made wooden door and confidently stride through. You are immediately hit by a wave of heat, a rocking motion, and a slight increase in gravity, as you find yourself on a moving train winding through an expanse of dry, dusty desert.
Most of the train's cars seem to be hauling wooden crates, or similar cargo containers. On this cart, you see a shiny-looking metal chest, and on the next car up, you see a metal door, just kinda hanging out.

It's hot out here, and so are you, so you dramatically rip open your shirt. Suddenly, a bright purple vortex appears on the next car down, and extrudes some Medusa lady and a roman Legionary. Just in time to observe your glorious bod, how wonderful.

What? How did those two get here? No matter, they can be subjects. Seven, Bad Idea. Like the spunk. Eight, Subversion. Have fun with those toys now.
In a flash of purple light, what appears to be a gameboy with a small keyboard wielded on running a command line is dropped into Adriana's hands, and a frag grenade is dropped into Rufus's hand. [Rufus Adaptability+Knowledge: 2] Huh, what's that? You get the feeling it's some kind of bomb?
[Adriana Knowledge: 3] This seems distinctly unsafe to you.

You scuttle on over to Misha, and point at the hole in the wall, through which Nothing is looking somewhat annoyed.
You drape yourself over his head, and he heads over to the hole, intent on adventure.

Out through the closest door. Open it a bit, peer round cautiously with my weapon ready, go through if no danger.
You ignore your fellows, and head through the last unopened door.
[5]
You look at yourself. Old Ollie sure looks handsome as ever. You peer over your own shoulder, and see that the rest of the room behind you is in the door as well.

Throw another lightning bolt at the Gorgon. Just in case this one is not a dud get behind cover.
I still want to bring the snake girl to the beach with me.

Rufus throws another grenade at Adriana while she's staggered. [Rufus Kinesthetics: 6] [Adriana Kinesthetics: (-1 due to wound and staggering) 1] ...And beans her in the face again. [Adriana Toughness: 2] Adriana gets knocked over by the force.

Gunther is doing nothing until I get a more specific action. You're on a different train car, and Adriana is still being engaged and is still not rolling well.

Even if there were cover miraculously nearby, Rufus would not be able to get to it, as he put too much into his throw and tripped himself up.

You edge around yourself, and find yourself in the same place as you were before.
[Knowledge: 4] You see that Relativity is still laying where it was when it fell off of whatshisface's chest when he died. You feel an sudden desire to loot.
There are currently two doors equally directly across from you. One door that you blew open with your gun, and the other that those people just went through.

((Provided I ever get around to making a "real RTD" (look how long this update took!) I'll probably go for a setting more like ER, only anomalous shit where shit is anomalous.))

Nobody doesn't really think about jumping into a hole containing nothing, and jumps into a hole containing nothing.
Nobody considers the hole containing nothing. It feels a bit uneasy about just jumping in, but no-one has ever done this before, so it must be fine, right? Nobody steps into the hole.

This course of action will get you nowhere, which is where you are at the moment.

Loot relativity. Go through any door not yet opened.

"Deserters!"
All the doors have been opened already. Three (!) of them just lead into this room. The one to the east leads to a nice lobby, and the one to the south leads to a generic room with a hole that leads to nothing in it.

My mapmaking isn't too bad, is it? ;_;

No, I just posted in a hurry. Go into the lobby, through the door there if there is one. Loot relativity still, and anything else of cash, sentimental or comedic value.

Gunther decides to walk back through the door to the beach and take cover there instead of hiding behind a convenient waist-high wooden crate again. Helpfully, this makes him immune to getting blown up!
Adriana rolls up into a little ball and desperately buttonmashes on Subversion while the grenade makes a stressful ticking sound.
[Adaptability: 3] She types in "Help pls" and hits enter a few times. It brings up a help page with a few commands, like "Find Device", or "Hack that Shit", or "Deactivate Grenade".

The grenade makes a beep that sounds suspiciously like "Now armed, please make your peace."

You damn Nobody as damn deserters, then proceed to loot your ex-comrades body. As you pick it up, Relativity opens up it's claws expectantly.
[Knowledge+Adaptability: 2] You guess that's kinda neat.

As for other loot... hmm, there might be something in that gross corpsepile...
[Roll to loot!: 5] Digging through the mass of dead bodies (respecting the dead, of course, you make sure not to damage them) you find...
[Random loot!: 22,10] A compound bow, made with the bones of the wailing dead, forever cursed to make this weapon awesome. It's arrows are made from the blood of children and virgins, which about covers everyone around here, so you can get more ammo by stabbing people with the sharp top part, which is pretty metal.

Satisfied by your well-armedness, you walk through the hole in the door to the lobby. Classy, yet cheerful music is playing. A comfy chair sits in a comfy corner, and a few portraits hang on the walls. At the end of the room sits a single, heavy, metal door.

[Precision+Adaptability: 4] Adriana somewhat erratically types "Dissaarm fgucking grhenadew", which subversion helpfully autocorrects.
With a slightly sad winding-down sound, the grenade disarms itself. Not to say that everyone isn't ducking and covering and cowering and panicking, but they sure aren't exploding.
Rufus and Adriana are both cowering on the floor, and Gunther is peeking in through the door, asking "Where's the earth-shattering kaboom?"

To himself, of course.
