Title: Manaburn: An Apocalyptic Monster-Hunting RPG: Back at the base
Post by: Wwolin on August 24, 2013, 05:47:23 pm
The age of man has ended, and an age of monsters has begun. Nobody really knows where they came from, but ever since they showed up twelve years ago, the most troubling matter has been how to kill them, before they kill us. Bullets and arrows bounce off of their hides without leaving so much as a scratch, and even weapons made from steel strong enough to cut them are corroded away to nothing by the caustic mana in their blood. But they’re not invincible. A couple of government-sponsored programs have been created to fight them, using their own weapons to turn the tide of war against them. You are one of these new “Slayers”, having joined the program and survived the training exercises, although only time will tell if you’ll show the same aptitude in the field.

do I need to memorize all of the d20 stuff?
Nope. I'm going more for storytelling than complicated mechanics here, so the only thing to know is that a D20 will be used to resolve actions.

Do I invent the perks and quirks myself?
Yep. So long as it's nothing horrendously overpowered, anything goes, provided you pay it off in quirks.

With a low humming sound, the door to the train you're on slides open, revealing the world outside. You've stopped in front of what seems to be a large metal blister rising out of a treeless plain, although you recognize it from one of your lessons as the entrance to Fort Arundel, one of the last human population centers on the planet, and the main Slayer base in Europe. Several men and women in deep blue uniforms stand on top of the structure, and one of them, a tall man in his thirties with a head of shaggy brown hair quickly climbs down and hurries over to your group.

"Hey, how are you all doing? I'm Jacob Wendell, Siphon expert and your new squad leader, which means that I get half of your rations every meal. Well, that last bit's a joke, but for at least the next month or so, I'll be in charge of making sure that you six don't get yourselves killed. Now, it's been a while since my training days, but I remember that train ride from the academy taking the better part of a day, so how about we get inside and do introductions over supper to unwind a bit before I show you around and go over rules."

"Haha, let's get going then. I'm pretty sure that Sasha's cooking for our squad tonight, so we're bound to get something good. If we're really lucky, we might even get - HEY!"

Jacob spies Yukkuri and quickly grabs her shoulder before she can leave the group.

"You can't just head out there alone, especially without a weapon. There's no need to worry about an attack on the base though, if that's what you're worried about. The monsters in the region are small enough and Arundel is large enough that they all tend to fill up on our leftovers, and are pretty docile as a result. Not to say that they won't eat any living thing that crosses their paths of course, but they don't actively hunt for prey anymore. Up at Fort Hadrian it's a different story, but that's one of the big reasons why all of our new recruits go to Arundel first to learn the ropes."

As he says this last bit, Jacob realizes that he might be grabbing Yukkuri's shoulder a bit too hard, and lets go of her.

"Sorry about grabbing you so hard... I'm a bit new to this whole squad leader thing, so I might be a little bit overprotective at first. Still, if you want to hunt monsters that badly, we can check out the armory after dinner tonight and get all of you fitted so that we can head out on a mission tomorrow. Now, let's get inside before the food gets cold. It'd be a real shame to waste one of Sasha's meals."

Yukkuri rubs her shoulder, a bit annoyed by Jacob's behavior.

I'm not hungry at all. I would think there would at least be some weapons outside. I need to find a way out, these people will probably end up killing themselves with their silverware if I stay close to them.

Search for a weapon. Try to ditch group.

Group-Yukkuri

Jacob flinches and takes a step back as he sees Pikachu, before falling over and laughing heartily as he picks himself up and leads you into the metal entryway and down a spiral staircase which seems to go on forever.

"Hahaha, that's right, the instructors told me that one of you had some sort of monster as a pet. Pikachu, wasn't it? I'm a bit of a dog person myself, although I bet that the science department's gonna be all over you once they find out. Speaking of which..."

You've reached the bottom of the stairs, and are now standing in the center of a large circular room roughly the size of a baseball field, which appears to have been carved directly into the bedrock, although bits of it are reinforced with heavy metal plates here and there, and there are five evenly-spaced tunnels leading out from it. Several people are milling about here, some of them with hot meals, and there seems to be a four-man squad exiting one of the tunnels with weapons in hand, ready for a mission.

"Welcome to the Node, where you'll be spending the few moments of free time that new recruits get! Now, there's not too much to do in here other than just hanging out, but you see all of those tunnels? Those lead to the other areas of the base, which include the science, rookie, veteran, armory, and civilian sections. The signs that tell you which is which are currently being repainted, but you can generally tell where's where by who's going through the tunnels. For example, the science section over there is always surrounded by researchers in labcoats, while the veteran's section always has a couple of fancy-uniformed officers standing outside. If you see anyone come running through a tunnel, then they're probably either a rookie like you or they're heading to the armory before a mission, and it's usually easy enough to tell by the look in their eyes. Finally, there's the civilian section, which always has a few kids outside wanting to see the soldiers. Sometimes the head honchos and executives are there too, although they almost never step foot outside unless they're offering a special job. Anyways, meals are served in the rookie or veteran sections, depending on your rank, so we should probably head over to the rookie section and not keep Sasha waiting any longer."

You follow Jacob through one of the tunnels into what you presume is the rookie section, and all the way down to the end of the tunnel, which is lined with numbered doors on both sides. At the end of the tunnel, a tall brown-haired woman in her late twenties is waiting by a cart piled high with grilled steaks.

"So, here are all of your rooms! Harvey and Urist, you've got room 101. Kyle and Red, you can have 102. 103 is my old room from my training days, so I hope nobody minds if I take it fo-"

The woman with the cart begins to whistle innocently before purposely pushing it over Jacob's foot.

"Argh, what the hell was that for, Sasha?"

"Oh, sorry about that. Evidently you and your group aren't hungry, so I'm just gonna take this cart to the civilian sector before it grows cold."

"Hey, no need to get snarky with me. I was just gonna show off the rooms before we have some dinner. Rookies, this is Sasha Greene, slicer specialist and tactical genius. Now anyways, if 103's mine, then room 104 goes to Sophia and... wait a second. One, two, three, four, five... oh shit."

Sasha laughs for a moment before noticing what's going on and sighing deeply.

"You already lost one, didn't you?"

"Shhhh! If anyone finds out about this, Arkwright's gonna mount my head on his wall! Argh, I'm so screwed!"

"Calm down, will you? You're the one making all the noise about it. Just head back to the surface and find her before she gets anywhere. If you move now, you might even find her before something else does."

"But-"

"Every second you spend stammering at me is another second that a monster could've found her. I'll keep an eye on the food if you want, but you and your rookies had better get a move on."

Jacob nods, and his expression becomes one of deadly seriousness.

"Right. Alright squad, we're headed to the armory. Just follow me, and tell me what class of weapon you want as we're moving. We're gonna be pretending that this is a routine mission, so we only have about an hour until people will get suspicious. Hopefully we'll be able to find her before then, and without running into any monsters. Now, let's get going."

With that, Jacob starts to run back through the tunnel, without pausing to see if you're following.

"You'd better follow him. It's almost impossible to conduct a search with only one person, and even harder to defend an unarmed person without any backup. I'll be sure to save you some steaks for when you get back. Oh, and if I were you, I'd steer clear of any caves you might find. We've had reports of a new monster species that likes to sleep in them, and from what I've heard, it's a pretty nasty one."

Yukkuri

Taking advantage of the distraction provided by Pikachu, you quickly sneak around to the other side of the entrance dome and wait until you can hear the squad heading inside before running across the plain, looking for anything that could possibly be used as a weapon. Something shiny catches your eye on a hill about a mile away, and you rush to the spot to find an old sword from the early age of monsters lying atop an old grave. The headstone's far too weathered to be read, but the blade fits nicely in your hand, and its extremely light weight leads you to believe that it's made of superhardened steel, which although able to cut through monster hide has the unfortunate flaw of corroding upon contact with mana, which limits its usefulness. Still, it's better than nothing, and you give it a few test swings as you look from the top of your bleak grey hill at the equally bleak grey plains around you. Fortunately, there don't seem to be any monsters nearby, although the sun's setting rather quickly. It might be a good idea to find some shelter while you can still see where you're going.

Hmm... Just because I was alone during training most of the time doesn't mean I haven't listened. This 'mana' would vaporize a weapon like this instantaneously... Hah. That's Ironic, I pretend I know the rules and I'm running around out here thinking I can save everyone else. I would find shelter, but I feel I need a better weapon than this. Actually, I just need to make this weapon better. Now just how would you make something mana-resistant...

Find anything to make my weapon resist mana. Disregard shelter.

You all tell Jacob your weapon preferences while following him out of the rookie section and into another tunnel, which opens into a large room with a large anvil in the center and all varieties of weapons on the walls. A pile of monster parts lies in one corner, and a wiry-looking blonde man who can't be a day over 20 is measuring them and separating them into smaller piles. Upon noticing you all, he picks himself up and dusts himself off before speaking.

"Yo Jake, I'm kinda in the middle of something here, so just give me the orders and I'll introduce myself tomorrow morning. Your siphon's up on the top left rack like it always is."

Jacob calls out orders while retrieving his siphon; a great rust-colored canon about 5-feet long in the shape of a wolf's head.

"Alright, we need a Pug for the guy with the red hat, an Arc for the short pale fellow, a Sickle for the sneaky looking one, and a Mosca for the lady. The last guy says that he's got some sort of special order waiting for him."

"Oh, I was wondering who that was going to be for. It was a hell of a lot of fun putting it together. Anyways..."

The man heads to the wall and grabs a large bone scimitar reinforced with a metal brace, which he carries over to Urist.

"Here's the Sickle. It's pretty basic as far as slicers go, but it's damned effective at what it does. It's sharp enough to cut through most things, but if you want that bit of extra oomph, then just flip this switch on the handle and it'll use mana to leave more of a mark. You probably learned this at the academy, but you don't want to get too low on mana. There's an alarm built in to warn you if you're running out though, so just be mindful of that and you'll be fine. Now, let's see what else I can find here... Aha, the Mosca!"

The man heads to the wall again and this time picks up a massive metal war-hammer, the muscles in his arms swelling visibly as he lifts it and carries it to Sofia.

"I know it looks like it weighs a ton, but don't worry to much about it. The mana in it is released in small amounts through the handle to increase the wielder's physical strength, so that you can swing it around like a toy. It's pretty easy to use too; just swing it at a monster until it stumbles, and than stab it with the pointy bit on the bottom to extract the mana. And remember, as tempting as it is to store up a lot of mana and become absurdly strong, you don't want it to overload. If anything weird starts happening to the weapon, that's a good sign that you should inject some of your mana into an ally's weapon before things get bad. Now, where'd I put the Pug?"

This time the man heads to a crate near the center of the room and opens it, pulling out a pair of huge spiked metal fists, each one slightly larger than a watermelon. He hands these to Red.

"Alright, these here are the Pugs. They're technically reapers, so don't worry about being strong enough to wield them, but they're a little bit different than normal reapers. You see, because both gloves are spiked, they absorb mana on every single blow that you land, which lets you charge up really fast. Unfortunately, their mana tank is smaller than that of an average reaper, so you'll have to give a lot of mana to your allies to avoid a meltdown. Fortunately, the Arc's one hell of a mana-guzzler. Speaking of which..."

The man heads back to the wall racks and pulls down a sleek and steely gun nearly seven feet long, which he hands to Kyle.

"Here's the Arc. It's a little bit unwieldy, I know, but the long barrel means that it packs a hell of a punch, even at huge distances. Anyways, like most other blasters, it converts mana into bullets of energy in order to attack from afar. The nifty thing about the Arc though is its special shot, which is capable of piercing through both enemies and terrain to strike things on the other side, which is great for when you're fighting a monster that's trying to use cover. As for its normal bullets, the Arc can fire either impact shots, which can shatter bones and cause concussions, piercing shots, which are similar to conventional bullets but bigger and made out of energy, and freezing shots, which are very effective against some types of monsters. You can change the shot type by turning this little dial on the stock here, and if you want to fire the special shot, you push the dial in like a button. Finally, if it starts to beep, that's the built-in alarm telling you that you need to refill on mana. If you keep firing when you're low on mana, than it'll start draining your strength to keep operating, which is the last thing you want when you're fighting a monster. Well, it looks like that's everything. Wait, no! There's still one more!"

Excitedly, the man walks over to the anvil and opens a compartment near the base, from which he withdraws a bone and metal blade similar to Urist's Sickle, but with sharpened monster fangs all along the cutting edge. He examines this carefully for a moment before handing it to Harvey.

"I know that I've said it already, but man, this was fun to put together. It's just like the Sickle, but the teeth on it are meant to tap into the mana of monsters in order to keep it fueled. Now, the design's almost perfect, but there's one small flaw where mana occasionally leaks out of the teeth instead of being absorbed through them. I've got no idea why this happens, but there's no warning for it, so you'll have to be extra careful. Anyways, it's just like the Sickle in that you can flip this switch to change between releasing and absorbing mana. I might be able to work out the flaws in it given the time, but it needs to be field tested a few times first. Speaking of which, when you get back, could you tell me how well it worked?"

As the man speaks, the pile of monster parts he was measuring shifts uneasily, and a high-pitched mewling sound begins to come from it.

"Oh, there's my cue to berate you all for wasting my precious time and get back to work. Now, head on upstairs and get me some new parts to work with, will you?"

"Alright then, let's get going while the going's good."

Jacob seems to have calmed down a bit, but he's obviously still worried. You follow him back to the Node and up the central staircase to the surface with your new weapons. When you reach the top and step outside, you can see that the sun has just slipped past the horizon, and the moon is starting to rise over a nearby hill. As he scans the area, Jacob hands each one of you a watch, a compass, and a flare gun.

"Alright, our best bet is to split up to cover more ground, so we'll have to communicate with these. A green flare means you've found Yukkuri, and a red flare means that you need backup from the rest of the squad. I'm going to be heading due north, so you five should spread out in other directions so that we don't miss her. Finally, as much as it pains me to say this, we'll have to back if we don't find her in a hour, since most monsters are more active at night. Now, unless anyone has any urgent questions, let's move out!"

Yukkuri

You think for a moment, remembering how back at the academy someone mentioned that monster materials are the only things able to resist the corrosive effects of mana. Well, the only real way to get monster parts is by killing monsters, which makes retrieving them a bit of a catch 22 for you right now. Still, your blade should be able to land a few hits before it melts away, so if you can find something relatively small and kill it quickly, then you might be able to keep your weapon intact. You look out over the hill again, this time keeping a very careful eye out for anything moving about on the plain. Suddenly, there's a low whooshing sound behind you, and before you can turn around, something knocks you roughly to the ground, sending your blade flying from your hand as sharp claws rake across your back, shredding the back of your robes but only just scratching your body.

Urist

You head off to the south and to the top of a high hill, which overlooks an impressive ruined cityscape across a river. Several would-be skyscrapers lie across streets and parking lots like immense fallen logs, and about midway between you and the river is an enormous ruined stone structure almost like a castle. There are so many potential hiding spots that you're not sure where to start looking, but you'd best pick one soon: It's gotten dark, and judging by the watch you were given, ten minutes have already passed since you started searching.

Kyle and Red

The two of you run off towards the west, and almost immediately spot a figure off in the distance. Not sure whether it's Yukkuri or a monster, you advance carefully towards it, but after a few minutes you realize that it's something else entirely. It's a large wagon with the body of a huge silvery bat-like monster strapped to it, being pulled by a pair of oxen and escorted by a squad of six slayers. They're all talking amongst themselves cheerfully, and they don't even notice you as you pass by. The next few minutes of searching are uneventful after this, and looking down at the watch you were given, you can see that ten minutes have passed.

Sofia and Harvey

The two of you head to the east, which is quite hilly, with one large knoll overshadowing the rest. It's tall enough that it would make a great vantage point, and you both head towards it as quickly as you can, hoping to get there before night sets in so that you can have the best possible view of the surrounding area. When you arrive slightly out of breath at the base of it, you check the watches. Nine minutes. Maybe you can afford to take a tiny brea- FWOOSH! As you pocket your watches, a ring of flame nearly ten feet tall roars up around the hill, trapping you inside and nearly catching Harvey's clothes on fire. It's hard to hear over the roar of the blaze, but you're pretty sure that you can make out some sort of beastly bellow coming from the top of the hill.

Yukkuri

Thinking quickly, you roll to the left the moment the weight on you starts to shift, freeing yourself from the thing on top of you and grabbing your blade as you scramble to your feet and face your assailant, only to find that there's nothing there. Thinking that perhaps your attacker may be flying to avoid your detection, you look upwards, scanning the skies for signs of threat. Unfortunately, it only dawns on you that the danger might be hiding below you as a razor-sharp thorn emerges from the ground and impales your foot. It hurts like hell, but without missing a beat you thrust your blade into the ground and are rewarded with a shriek of pain as the thorn vanishes just as quickly as it appeared. Knowing where to look now, you spot a shifting patch of dirt and stab again, but you must not have hit anything too sensitive this time, because a sticky black vine twice as thick as your arm bursts forth from the ground and swats you across the hilltop, cracking a couple of your ribs. Miraculously, you manage to land on your feet and counterattack before the vine can retract into the ground, and with one mighty swing you sever it, spraying mana-infused blood everywhere and causing whatever the vine was attached to to shriek mightily. After about a minute, the ground begins to stir yet again, but as you run towards the disturbance, a massive yellow squash-like gourd the size of an eighteen wheeler emerges from the ground like a submarine, causing you to stop in your tracks. Vines covered in sticky black slime like the one that you severed lift the vegetable up like legs, and with a loud cracking sound, the gourd splits open to form a massive set of jaws which could swallow an elephant whole, the insides of which glow red-orange with fire. Speaking of which, a flaming ring seems to have sprung up around the hill, cutting off all means of escape. And finally, to make matters worse, your blade doesn't seem to be reacting well to the mana it's being exposed to. Most of the edge has been worn down, and there are several small pits in the metal, as well as a large crack near the hilt.

Same size, but I'm probably limiting myself to three squads tops. After running Looter's Delight when it had around 30 people, I think my absolute limit's somewhere around 20, or maybe a little higher when the marching band season ends. Plus, I'm probably only gonna have one squad in the field at a time, with the others doing various things around the base, so it won't be too much strain on me.

Yukkuri, Sofia, and Harvey
((A bit of fitting music for when you read this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5a45f1uy80))

As the monster shakes the last bits of soil off of itself, Yukkuri quickly throws down her sword and grabs the severed vine. Or rather, she's grabbed by the severed vine, which evidently has a bit of life left in it. It wraps around her like a boa constrictor, squeezing the air out of her and drenching her robes in sticky black gel. Taking advantage of the opportunity, the monster-gourd breathes deeply before exhaling a jet of flame... right onto its own vines, which catch fire immediately, filling the air with an acrid stench. Sofia arrives at the top of the hill moments after this, but trips on a root as she rushes to attack the monster, sending herself hurtling into its mass of flaming vines which quickly catch her on fire as well. Finally, Harvey arrives to confront the beast. Sadly he doesn't even make it as far as the root. The moment of distraction caused by everything being on fire is just enough time for the severed vine to grab him as well, wrapping him up both uncomfortably tight and uncomfortably close to Yukkuri.

((Usually I don't tell people their rolls, but I think it's worth noting that I have never seen so many consecutive rolls of 1 on a d20 before. Congratulations, I guess...))

Kyle

You head back to the base, watching the squad from before unload their kill while you wait for your teammates to arrive. As several groups of men and women emerge from below ground and hack bits off of the beast in order to fit them down the stairs, you notice the blonde man form the armory receiving a brown-wrapped package from the squad leader and tucking it under his coat before scurrying back underground as quickly as he appeared. Even if it's only your first day at the base, you've got a feeling that this isn't part of the normal routine...

Red

You and Pikachu head east past the base, hoping to catch up with Harvey and Sofia, and maybe even find Yukkuri while you're at it. Although you're not entirely sure where they are in these hills, one knoll seems to be larger than the rest, and as you approach you realize that the base of it is on fire in a ring going all the way around. You can see more fire at the top of it as well, as well as hear some sort of battle going on, although from the sound of things both parties seem to be in a considerable deal of pain.

Name: Adrian Konicek
Gender: male
Age: 24
Appearance: The word that comes to mind when viewing Konicek is cold. His skin is always freezing: it's an unnatural grey, and his short hair is white. His eyes are like chips of ice: hard and emotionless. His clothes are thick and waterproof even in the heights of summer, with heavy-duty leather boots. His voice is low and scratchy, like someone in the beginnings of a cold.
Backstory: Konicek hails from a compound that hunted monsters for a living. A bizarre cult, it stockpiled weapons for the prophesied apocalypse. When it arrived, they didn't just lay down and die: they fought. Indoctrinated in the cult from the day he was born, Konicek was sent out to join the Slayer program as part of a diplomatic agreement.
Perks: Cold-blooded: Konicek suffers much less burns than other people.
Hand chopper: Konicek has a hand-axe with a blade made from a sharp monster scale. Deadly, but almost no range, it hacks through wood, flesh, and monster hide alike.
Still as the grave: Konicek is very still, and so also very accurate. When lying still he is very hard to spot.

Quirks: Unnerving stare: people don't like Konicek, and you can't entirely blame them. His face is too immobile - people get creeped out by him when they engage in conversation.
Heavy step: he walks with a steady, heavy stride making plenty of noise when walking or running. The heavy boots don't help.
still as the grave: he can be slow to react to situations such as sudden attacks from the side.

Konicek would want a very powerful (if slow-firing blaster), like the equivalent of an anti-tank cannon.

Name: Sebastian Ivan Vasilyev
Gender: Male
Age: 20
Appearance: Tall, around 195cm, semi-long black hair pulled back in a pony tail, wide-brimmed fedora made of an odd greenish leather and an almost blood-red duster
Backstory: Sebastian was born to Pyotr Ivan Vasilyev and Eliza Camryn Vasilyev in the eastern part of Great Britain. His father was something of a scientist and engineer with some revolutionary ideas on how to improve upon current weapon designs. Unfortunately before he could finish all his prototypes and bring them before the governmental board in charge of weapons development and deployment his lab was attacked by a trio of unusually powerful monsters for the area. Much of his research was destroyed as well as all but a few of his prototypes. This was 2 years ago. Sebastian found on of his father's weapon prototypes and began practising with it before joining the military.

Perks:
   Prototype weapon
Duster made from wool of a shaggy fire-breathing monster
In-human strength (father used him as a guinea pig to test some serums made from monster parts, strong enough to wield normal slicers one-handed)

Quirks:
Black-balled/enemies, many of the generals in the upper echelons feel wronged by his father in some form and get their revenge by hindering Sebastian whenever they can
Monsters tend to single him out during combat, possibly because of the scent of his duster
Unknown side-effects that have yet to surface from the many experiments his father put him through

Squad A

Kyle

You slip into the fort unnoticed and follow Blondie from a safe distance, blending in with the crowds rushing up and down the stairs to dismantle the bat-creature. The Node's really bustling now, especially around the entrances to the civilian and science sections. You follow your mark straight through the hall to the armory though, which is mostly empty. He heads into the main armory room, but as you try to peer inside, a metal door slides shut in front of you, blocking your vision. However, the door's not soundproof, and as you listen in you hear a high-pitched squeal, which is soon cut off by the sound of a blade slicing through flesh.

Urist

You swim across the river and enter the city, which is almost like a labyrinth with its narrow streets and fallen towers. Fortunately, you don't even have to wander past sight of the river before you find something salvageable. It's an old laptop computer, which is in shockingly good condition for having been left alone for at least a couple of years. Although it doesn't turn on, you carry it with you. Maybe someone back at Arundel might know a thing or two about how to fix it.

Red, Harvey, Sofia, and Yukkuri

Harvey and Yukkuri struggle against the vine's grip, but the two of them only succeed in entangling themselves further, which leaves them lying *ahem* awkwardly close to each other. Despite being on fire, the plant manages to regain its composure enough to slither towards them, but before it can attack, a great lance of flame slithers off of Sofia and slams into the monster, completely incinerating several of its vines and rendering it immobile. A few seconds later, Sofia's Reaper comes down on the gourd, shattering an area of it the size of a minivan on it to bits like an overripe pumpkin and rendering it very, very dead. Red arrives at the top of the hill moments later with his fists ready and his clothes slightly singed from having to run through the ring of fire.

Squad B

The three of you stand up and stretch as the door of your train-car opens and a blue-uniformed attendant steps in and bows apologetically.

"I'm sorry if we've made you late, but we had to pass through the Sussex Ruins Nesting Site on our way here. We had to slow down to avoid attracting attention form monsters, but better safe than sorry."

Well, you're all late alright. You were supposed to arrive just before suppertime, but the sun's already set behind the hills, and countless scientists and workers are working on dismantling the carcass of a large bat-like monster outside of a metal dome in the ground. As you marvel at the beast's wingspan, which must be at least fifty feet, a tall brown-haired woman emerges from the dome and tries to force her way through the crowd. After a few seconds of failing at this, she raises a hand to her mouth and gives a shrill whistle while waving you over.

Sergei looks at the attendant, "That's alright Miss, trains are rather expensive to replace after all." He grins with the last and hefts a somewhat irregular black metal case onto his back before stepping off the train just in time to hear a shrill whistle and a woman waving frantically at him. With no clue where to go he shrugs and heads over to the woman. "Huh, didn't know I was so popular already. I'm Sergei Vasilyev." He holds out his hand to shake.

Slowly, Konicek stretched after a long journey spent in silence. Joints popped and crackled like frost breaking. He stepped off the train and surveyed the area in a single smooth look. He walked up to the woman, one hand resting on the head of his hand axe. He breathed out and one could almost see the plume of fog.

Squad A

Urist

You carry laptop across the water without a hitch, and head back across the river to gather materials for raft-making. Not much wood seems to be left from when the city fell, but there's plenty of pvc pipe lying around which works just as well if not better. You begin lashing these together with old bungee-cords when you get an uneasy feeling that you're being watched. Looking around, you don't see anything nearby, but the feeling doesn't go away, and you begin to develop a nasty headache as you wonder what's going on.

Sofia, Yukkuri, Red, and Harvey

The ring of flames from before is completely gone, replaced with several burnt lattices of vines which are crumbling apart rapidly. It seems as if the monster was using them in order lock you all in, although it couldn't have been too great of a barrier, since Red managed to make it through mostly unscathed. As Sofia catches her breath, Harvey wriggles free of the vine, accidentally jostling Yukkuri a few times in the process.

"Harvey! Get away from there!"

Yukkuri manages to extricate herself from the vine as well and immediately grabs her damaged sword, brandishing it at Harvey, who just grins at her before heading down the hill back towards base.

"I guess that was one way to get to know each other, huh hunni? Calm down."

Sofia follows him too, calling out to Red as she leaves.

"...Well, that could have gone worse. You missed the fun, Red. Can we head back now?"

Being mute and all, Red doesn't answer, but merely shrugs before readying his fists again and waiting at the top of the hill with Yukkuri.

A short time later, Harvey and Sofia arrive back at Arundel, where Sasha is standing outside, talking to a group of new recruits. Upon noticing the two of them, she looks aorund for the rest of the group before speaking.

"So, what's the news on Yukkuri? Has anyone sent up a flare yet?"

Kyle

You decide to let Blondie be for now and head back up to the surface, where you spot Sasha Greene and another rookie squad, as well as Harvey and Sofia, who seem a little out of breath, probably from running all the way here from wherever they were searching.

Squad B

The three of you hop off the train and head towards the waving woman. While there's quite a crowd gathered, they make sure to keep their distance, although you're not sure if it's because of Sergei's enormous black case or Konicek's general spookiness. Whatever the reason may be, you make it through easily enough and prepare to introduce yourselves, but the woman speaks before any of you have a chance to.

"Hello, I'm Sasha Greena, Slicer specialist and leader of Squad B, which you're now all members of. I take it that you're Sergei, Adrian, and Leona? I'll get who's who sorted out once we get inside, but welcome to Arundel, which I'm sure you learned about back at the Academy. Now, let's get inside and get rooms sorted out so that I can get the rest of my paperwork filled out and I can show you around tomorrow."

Just as she says this, an athletic-looking man and woman come running up, attracting Sasha's attention. She gestures at you three to wait for a moment before addressing them.

"So, what's the news on Yukkuri? Has anyone sent up a flare yet?"

Cross arms. A flare? Is something wrong?

Head back to base, dragging Yukkuri if needed.

" She's coming, had a run in with a monster but it won't be getting in anybodies way again. "

Hey wait! What a waste. I need to get some materials before I go.

Pick up any useful items or materials from the defeated monster, glare menacingly at Harvey, refusing to accept forced RNG shippery.

EDIT: If the return to base is successful, find a place to repair and upgrade my sword as soon as possible.

Sergei awkwardly pulls his proffered hand back and waits while Sasha speaks with the others and deciding not to but into the conversation.

Leona, Konicek, Sergei, Sofia, and Harvey

Sasha reaches into one of her pockets and fishes out a small flare gun, firing a bright green plume of glowing smoke into the air before turning back to Harvey and Sofia.

"That's a relief, but sending up flares is still important, so that your squad knows that you've found her. We lose a lot of rookies due to them staying out at night because they don't know that their mission's over. Anyways, you two should probably head back inside and get cleaned off. Judging by the black slime all over you two, the monster that attacked you was probably a Gourdred, which means that if anyone so much as lights a candle near you, you'll go up in flames. The showers are over at the infirmary, which is the first door on the left at the Science Section, and your rooms in the Rookie Section have been stocked with new uniforms for you to wear."

Turning back to her squad:

"Those two are from Squad A, the other group of rookies around here. One of their members ran off on their own a while ago, and apparently they've just found her mostly unharmed. As for the flares, they're usually how us Slayers communicate in the field if we split up. The rest of their squad will probably follow that flare I sent up back to base now that they know that their missing squadmate has been found, which is good because most monsters start waking up and hunting around this time. Now, unless anyone has any more questions, we should head inside as soon as possible to get rooms and dinner sorted out."

Red and Yukkuri

Yukkuri hastily snatches up some shattered bits of the gourd's shell, which still glow with a strange inner fire, before Red grabs hold of her and drags her back to base.

Urist

You quickly head out of the city, your headache vanishing the moment you do. Leaving the raft to be completed on a later day, you pick up your laptop and head back to the entrance of the base, where all of your squad minus Jacob and Kyle are waiting. Harvey, Sofia, and Yukkuri are covered from head to toe in strange black goo, and Yukkrui is clutching both some glowing orange bits of shell and a nearly-broken steel sword.

((Sorry that turn's late, I've been kinda sickly as of late, but I'm getting better now.))

Sergei listens to the explanation quietly right up until the mention of dinner when his stomach lets out a horrendous growl. He puts his hand over his stomach to quiet it and grins embarrassingly, "Yeah, dinner sounds like a good thing. Lead on Cap."

((Surely you could get an actual weapon from the base that isn't going to melt on contact?))

"Food is necessary. Lead on."
