Title: Baldur's Gate 2 : CH4 Part 6 : Götterdämmerung
Post by: Stworca on April 02, 2011, 09:08:20 am
Greetings! It's my first LP on Bay12! This LP has quite a few updates already done (seven parts to be precise). This means that the first day i've added nine updates. But chapter 1 was just an intro. Truly.

I've moved to bay 12 from another forum, for an easier time with posting, and a slightly less sane audience - which is a good thing!
The LP is interactive. You don't need a copy of BG2 to participate. Note that the first few updates can be a disappointing, but i'm learning as i go.

Prepare for 5d4+5 Damage.

I'm happy with that! Still, as i've mentioned before, the initial parts are quite boring. Bear with me, please.
5d4+5? One of the party member get's hit for 46 damage from a spell that normally does d8+1 in just a few updates.   :o
I had already seven or eight ready when starting this thread. Let me just unload them first.

Edit : Also, Monskine, Moozg etc. are all brave souls who have joined the LP at the first update!

Oh god, Improved Ilyich. The amusing thing is that, despite its status as a parody, it seems to be easier than some of the legitimate encounter difficulty mods out there. Also, any source on the specific music used in those vids?

I know it's probably not set in stone yet, but how much content are you planning on covering?
Title: Re: Baldur's Gate 2 : Text, image, mod and madness.
Post by: Stworca on April 02, 2011, 11:30:22 am
The music used comes from rejenorst sounddesign. Free for non-comertial use. Fits combat videos perfectly in my opinion.
I assume that you've liked it? I planned on using this type of music for combat videos. Aside from Rejenorst i'll go with X-ray dog, Two Steps from Hell, C Armstrong, Immediate music, E.S. Posthumus, maybe HSV and some movie or game soundtracks.

The toughest fight in SOA part of BG2 will without a doubt be

How much content? Well, i plan on beating both SOA and TOB, but it's very likely that we'll die horribly somewhere along the road.
If you meant the side quests.. Not sure yet. I will do some parts of some locations off screen, to not bore the viewers with useless updates. For example

Which paladin kit? Cavalier? Inquisitor? Undead Hunter? (if you ain't sure, i'll make him an Inquisitor)

If you have any roleplaying preferences send them on my PM (to not spoil anything to the good people here) For example whom does he hate above everything else, what does he like, how bright is he? Bla. Bla. Bla.
You know  ;)

Monskine will be staying with us.
Sleep-O is also staying
Captain Brunch, the paladin, joins the bunch.

Two more spots at least (i say at least, because every "additional" person will simply be in a quene for next vacant slot)
Next update in a day or two.

Same as above. Any RP preferences that you may have - send them via PM to me.

I also would want to note that wild mage is a very risky choice. This is an ironman LP, good sir! Wild magic can kill us all! But then again, it's also an insane one (and i'm not talking about the difficulty) so everyone is welcome!

Also avatars. If you want a specific one, do tell me. If you want a custom one - 38 w x 60 h .BMP file is what i'll need to use it.

The last person i'd prefer to choose a thieving character. Otherwise locks and traps will be painful. But i'll take anyone who decides to join.

I have more than just one update, but i don't have the time to edit it today. Thus it will have to wait!
I've experimented with somewhat longer monologue-memory rants in this one. Any thoughts?

In the next update our party will add the three new members.

One that responds to Stworca's shout is 3.
The wild mage i planned on making deaf. RP purposes.

Also.. The very first spell that Ochita has cast had a wild surge.  :o I predict a long and healthy life, truly.

Few notes :
- The main character in this insane-parody knows Gaelan, more in the next update
- The smithy does call for guards if you look in the weapon rack to the left without taking anything from it (there's gold inside) obviously a bug, but i've decided to play along.
- The fruit shopkeeper may, or may not re-appear in the future, depending on YOUR decisions!
- I'm still experimenting with monologue-memory rants
- Added a poll
- As always, all feedback is welcome! Both negative and positive.

Next update.. When i'm back from my second job  :o

Wait what? Was the duergar really named Ilyich in vanilla? Because Ilyich is Lenin... Weird o_O.

Yes, he was named Ilyich in vanilla as well.

Tchaikovski was Ilyich too.  There was also "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" novella by Tolstoy. One can only wonder which one of them the duergar refers to. Maybe neither, maybe all of them.. Ilyich translates to Son of Ilya. Ilya being a name. Daughter of Ilya would go something along the lines of.. Ilyinichna. So my guess is - no reference here.

Zhivago, Rasputin and Karamazov were added by "Tactics" mod though.

The next update will be an experimental "Party member PoV" one. I'm wondering how will it turn out.

Did you do a Thief LP?

Nope. Prior to this LP i only had HOI2, ToEE and Morrowind ones. It's my first BG2 Let's Play.

I have screenshots ready for ~two updates, but i'll do them after i return from underpaid, inhuman labor that my boss dares to call half-shift work. So in about 5 to 6 hours expect an update.

To the person who voted for combat encounters : Druid Groove is rather poor when it comes to these, but we'll have a neat one once we return to civilized areas of the game. Also Two or three chapters from here, there'll be a fight so epic, that i'm putting together music, effects & co for it even now!

Since the poll votes are mixed, i'm going with mixed updates. This time party banters like crazy!
Next update? Today probably. I have material for over 3 updates ahead, but editing and compiling takes a while.
I'd also like to ask Brunch and others if they like their NPC's.

So far it looks like this :

Ochita has wild surge on EVERY spell that he casts. A weird bug, but one that i am unable to fix. I'm trying to cast as few spells as possible with him, to not kill him too fast. This will change during boss fights that are to come, where every single spell, wild surge or not, will matter. Ochita has insanely low health, despite having decent endurance. With 40 hp he can be instantly killed by anything more dangerous than an ant. Luckily he is a mage, and as such has a huge variety of defensive spells.

3 has proficiencies in Katanas, but we haven't found any yet, despite having an enormous arsenal of magical weapons. He's not yet able to plant difficult traps, but this will change in a few levels. Should he survive what is to come, i'll boost his archery skills a bit.
Brunch received Shield of Harmony. A very nice shield that grants immunity to confusion among other things. He fares quite well so far.
Monskine is a second-plane character when it comes to combat, but in a few levels this too may change. I'm not used to play druids.

We have truckloads of magical potions, handful of wands and desire to kick some butts! ARGH!
In the next update the person who voted for "combat encounters" will get a little treat to keep him interested. Druid grove is a boring place, but i'm trying to make it interesting. The fights there are boring, the dialogues are scarce, the events are.. there are none.. But i'll do my best to make it worthwhile until we get to interesting areas! Feedback is, as always, welcome.

Regards

Ochita has wild surge on EVERY spell that he casts. A weird bug, but one that i am unable to fix. I'm trying to cast as few spells as possible with him, to not kill him too fast.

Spell level variation is not a wild surge.  That happens with every spell cast, and at high levels you'll see swings of up to +/- 7.  You'll know a surge when you see one.  There's an announcement and they're visually obvious.

Also, (Improved) Chaos Shield is your friend.  I don't think it reduces the chance of a surge, but it dramatically lowers the chance of a bad one and increases the chance of the "spell cast normally" result.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Monskine is a second-plane character when it comes to combat, but in a few levels this too may change. I'm not used to play druids.

Druids have one massive drawback.  It takes IIRC well over 1 million XP to gain either level 14 or 15.  They lag behind the rest of the party for a looong time at that point.  Fortunately, they gain levels pretty quickly later on to make up for it.  At high levels they have Ironskins, Creeping Doom, and some fantastic summons.  They're still inferior to the other primary spellcasters IMO, but at least you have the best druid kit in the party (though Shapeshifter can be pretty good, the rest suck :P ).

Besides the shield of harmony, was there any specific reason you decided to go to Trademeet first? Just trying to get a hold on your overall strategy.

Well, we will never again encounter trolls so i gave them a special treat. I have warned thee that the Grove is a boring place. I hope you ain't TOO disappointed.  ???
Non-boss Combat encounters in general are not very exciting. The boss fights though..

Quote
Besides the shield of harmony, was there any specific reason you decided to go to Trademeet first? Just trying to get a hold on your overall strategy.

Shield of Harmony was not a reason. The only reason was that Monskine had a "past" in Grove.
This, and the fact that Trademeet = 20 000 gold, not counting the loot.
It's also a place which we are unlikely to visit ever again. Unless the party decides to go back.

I have no overall strategy. I only aim to get through boring parts of the game as fast as possible. I really have no ideas on how to make things like Lilarcol sewers interesting. I also want to focus on main plot as much as possible.

I went ahead and did D'Arnise off screen, there are no interesting fights in there, and nobody cares about Nalia's story. We got the flail, but will not be using it for quite a while. We have gained some XP though. Current levels are 10-12ish

With this being said i'm open for party suggestions where do we want to go.
Interesting and mostly doable places at this point are :
1 Firkraag's castle (a tough boss at the end, that can easily obliterate the entire party in one round. Fight with end boss would get much music and editing love.)
2 Unseeing Eye dungeon (beholders are MAJOR pain with SCSII. I'm still not sure how to handle them.)
3 Umar Hills (a few tough fights with undead, dragons and liches)
4 Unique, super high level characters in Athkatla - Such as Kuroisan, Liches and a rank 4x Gnome Fighter/Mage in docks
5 Proceed with main quest (we have the gold)

If you don't mind, i'd like to see your votes on it. I havent added Kangaxx, Twisted Rune and others, because these are too dangerous to beat without cheese usage. At least at this point.
The "vote" will close in 3 or 4 updates, after we beat a certain dungeon.

Also, 3, i hope i'm not going too far with your character. It's -yours- after all and thus i'm open to all suggestions and criticism. Having an "Ok, boss" rogue is good for me, but you might have a differend POV.

Aside from that, feedback on updates is - as always - welcome.

Yeah, I tend to do the Mae'var quest asap for the same reason.

That docks gnome fight is always kinda fun, but it's pretty miscellaneous alone. I'd vote for the Umar Hills (although it's not like you get anything much out of it besides dragon armour).

Also, 3, i hope i'm not going too far with your character.

Nope, it's ok with me (boss).

4 out of 7 votes were in favor of proceeding with main quest, so this is what we're going to do.
A new poll has been added. Bodhi or Aran? Bodhi is the more evil path, aiding vampires in their quest to slaughter everything that is living. Aran is a douche, with lots of plotting, but no action and annoying complications. Shadow Thieves endorse slavery. Vampires do so too, but use mental shackles instead of iron ones.

Aran is a lying type, Bodhi is a cruel one.
As enemy : Aran would sell you into slavery. Bodhi would kill you.

Now, since it's an alternative world..
Aran despises Stworca for something he did on a pool party, waay back.
Bodhi still sees him as potential pet slave.

The Let's Play is suspended until i figure out why is Spell Trap not working correctly (not recovering spells)  and possibly fix it.

If any of you has BG2 install on which the spell works just fine, and you're willing to aid me in this one - it will only take a few minutes. You will however need DLTCEP.

Edit : Fixed it, after almost three hours of script editing.. Let's see how it goes.

1st roll stworca: 20
2nd roll Monksin: 11

total 45 stworca 24 Monksine.

But he can stop being deaf after casting limited wish or wish once.

Also : Why? Giving Ochita a personality will disturb the delicate balance!
Any ideas for him? Can't i still lose him in a bet somewhere?

Edit : Just tried Ust'Natha with Fraps. Choppy as DF with a thousand cats. This is the worst possible news, as improved Ust'Natha is the jewel of this LP. :(

I've ran five Ust'Natha simulations today, and not once did "Chaos shield and the world is awesome" turn out to be true. Out of eleven dweomer attempts (with improved shield each) not one spell worked. Multiple chaos shields in sequencers don't work, so no cheesing your way out 'ere.

Now, dweomers are awesome for much later levels, or for boring encounters.

The update was quickly sticked together from some scraps that i managed to save before my BG2 installation went to hell. Bugs, crashes, ridiculous text changes.. All present.. But fixed for now!

Ochita is the first permanent death in our LP, unlucky. Unlucky, because Sleep-O was supposed to trigger the trap, with his insane health. It's permanent, because the body got destroyed by the damage. It happens sometimes. I'm sorry Ochi.
This also means that a spot has opened.
A disturbing fact : Both 3 and Brunch (and Ochita) WERE protected from fire. It's post reduction damage. Then again, we are playing on insane, right? Right.

Next update? Some boss fights. I require more time with script fixing, and videos are quite easy to make.

Edit : A minute in, and the free spot was taken. Impressive reflexes.

Why does Stworca have some of the more powerful items, while Unbekannt has only a robe?
The higher the HP, the lesser the chance of irreversible death. Unbekannt has 120+ hp, which is very high. The character also has AC on pair with Stworca, with less items.
Stworca is also the party TANK for incredibly powerful enemies (Dragons & co) , and thus needs all help he can get.
Lastly, if Stworca dies, the LP is over. The way the game works - your character can NOT die, or you lose.

At this moment highest mortality rate award goes to 3. Ochita has Ironskin spell, sanctuary and co. Stworca and Unbekannt (and previously Ochita) are untouchable by random mobs. Brunch and Sleep-O have insane AC and health.
3 only method of defense is turning invisible. He does that as often as he can (potions), but it's often not enough. He dies in half a round when focused. Thankfully he does NOT have 40ish HP, and is unlikely to die irreversibly this early in the game.

Irreversible deaths work like this : A great amount of damage dealt in one hit has a chance of destroying your body beyond magical revival. The higher your max health, the higher damage is needed for a chance of irreversible death.
Ochita could irreversibly die from hits above 30. For Sleep-O it'd have to be 80ish.
Brunch was hit for 157 by the 3 Fire Arrow sequencer, which is more than his hit points, but he wasn't hit by that amount in one attack. The highest damage he suffered there was 16. If he were hit for 157 in one attack, he would be permanently killed 100% of the time.
Some attacks : Such as Cone of Cold, all fire damage, petrification and disintegration, have MUCH higher chances of permanently killing you. Disintegrate is the exception, it ALWAYS irreversibly kills a character. So does dying from attribute drain.

Regards! Update? Today probably!

Should you have any questions, shoot  :)

I'll try to cover the combat system briefly for you :

Melee is like in any other game. Except Backstabs deal up to 5 times more damage, and Helmets protect from critical hits.
Attack speed, accuracy and damage are increased with character levels, as well as Weapon Proficiency points and some items and spells.
It's a attack vs Armor roll every time. There are 4 types of physical damage. Slashing, piercing, crushing and missile. Some items give partial resistance to one or more types of damage. Some give increased Armor Class.
Some targets are immune to a type of damage, some are immune to non-magical weapons, some can be affected only by really powerful ones (example : Demi-Liches can only be hit by +5 weapons!)
There are spells that grant magical weapon protection for 4 rounds (24 seconds)
There are spells that grant protection from non-magical ones.

Now, magic system is why i love Baldur's Gate. It's a rock - paper - scissors one.

A chain example :
A mage can protect himself with Stoneskin. It stops up to 10 physical attacks (not elemental nor magical)
It can be dispelled with Dispel Magic, Remove magic, Breach or hitting the mage 10 times.
Dispel and Remove magic can be stopped with Spell Immunity : Abjuration
Breach can be stopped with Spell Defense, Spell Trap, Spell turning and more.
Spell Turning is dispellable with Spell Thrust, Secret word and more.
Spell Thrust cannot be cast on an invisible target
Spell Thrust is also too weak to affect a target protected with Spell Trap
True sight, Purge Invisibility, Oracle and more reveal invisible targets.
Non-decection stops the above spells, with the exception of True Sight.
True sight can be stopped with Spell Immunity : Divination
But Oracle ignores Spell Immunity Divination..

Et cetera, Et cetera, Et cetera  :)
Basically the more complex your defense chain is to dispel, the more time the enemy needs to make you vulnerable.
If mage level is high enough, there is always a way to work on enemy protections.

There are 7 types of magical damage. Magic, Fire, Magic Fire, Cold, Magic Cold, Acid, Electricity.
There are spells, scrolls and potions that partially protect from some (In Kuroisan fight we were all protected from Acid at 70% or more)
There are spells, scrolls and potions that FULLY protect from some
There is also the last resistance : Magic (not to confuse with magic damage)
It's a chance of ignoring a hostile spell altogether.
However there are a few spells that ignore magic resistance.
Which also can be increased by other spells, scrolls or potions.
There are 9 spell levels for Arcane spellcasters (Sorc, Mage) and 7 levels for Divine (Priest, Druid)

Mage can cast only one spell per round (6s) with the exception of very powerful end game mage using a very powerful, end game ability that removes the cooldown.
Spellcasting can be interrupted by damage, Crowd Control or effects such as Silence and Miscast Magic.
Mage spellbook is limited.

Insanity makes enemies deal double damage, and the mods i'm using upgrade them both AI wise, and attributes/ resistances / gear wise.

I hope it helps!

I don't use Mislead, Invisibility, Impr invisibility or Shadow Doors. There are plenty of Invisibility potions in the game that don't take a spell slot. Also, in my opinion mage / sorcerer is the one character that should always tank enemies. No other class has this much tanking possibilities!
Yes, webs of protection spells are nice :D

Honestly? I improvised this fight. Last time i fought the lich was years ago. I've remembered a thing or two (like "breach now, or you'll be fckd" and the fact that she uses clouds) but the actual tactic i've came up with after pressing "record" button.

The next update may take a while, i'm having maturity exams in the following days.
However, when we return, we'll return with a bang.

There is a dragon fight incoming. Beast that has more health than all our party members combined, with THAC0 good enough to -always- hit our party, high resistances to magic and all damage, and a breath attack that drains up to 20 levels when it hits (that's instant permanent death)

We are still not resting. Stay tuned for incoming parts, ahoy!

Cheese?  In my LP?  It's more likely than you think.

The dragon wasn't as wicked as I expected, but I think I'm used to the Tactics version which IIRC spams wing buffets and stoneskins.  Still, bravo.  I'd recommend drinks all around, but the party's already seen to that.

Also, I'm not sure if the ransacking of de'Arnise Hold was a result of drunkenness, Stworca being a puppy-kicking card-carrying villain, or just standard D&D party behavior.  :P

Both answers are correct.
I had all three melee on her the entire time, not because they could DO anything (-18 AC is untouchable for us at the moment) but to force her to use Wing Buffet. Every 2s the dragon used buffet, were 2s less of Breath Attack danger.
I had the sorc stand the closest of all casters, to soak up the breath attacks. He did.

We got off easy with the fact that the dragon didn't target Sleep-O or 3, while buffeting them, but aside from that it was more or less "planned"

Quote

The dragon did use protection from magical weapons and wing buffet. The only difference between this and tactics is that it only affects cone in melee range, unlike tactics where wing buffet is a long range single target attack.
I did not install "dragons have fast, not interruptable spells" component though. It would be a tougher fight if we couldn't interrupt her dispel magic (she tried casting it nearly each round) but i don't like such components. Its cheesy puffs

first 4 lvls are going to be piece of cake. unless he desides to fight the gambling demon, the demi lich or the red dragon inthere who can actually pull out some decent fights. besides it will give the party acces to a fair bit of magical upgrades. especially if the red dragon is killed! staf of ram rules! also should give stworca acces to the extremly powerfull wish scroll.
Title: Re: Baldur's Gate 2 : Interactive, Mod & Madness LP.

the demi lich

Demi liches in standard BG2 (also Tactics IIRC) are laughable.  They spend most their time spamming Imprisonment.  Spell Immunity:  Abjuration, Enrage/Barbarian Rage, Protection from Undead (scroll), and Protection from Magic (scroll) all make quick work of them.  I have no idea what horrible monstrosities SCS II makes them, so that could be a fun fight.

The two fiend brawls on level 3 (IIRC) may well be impossible at this point.  I doubt Protection from Evil is fully effective in SCS II.  I'd expect Remove Magic and other fun counters (ditto for the demi lich, by the way).

it will give the party acces to a fair bit of magical upgrades

If you mean what I think you mean, not really.  I think you get at best half of any given recipe pair, with the other half always somewhere in TOB.  Also, I don't think Cromwell's up to the task.  Gotta wait for Cespy.

The party should still score some +3/4 weapons and the +1 quiver &c.  So that's a plus.  Also great gobs of XP.

Anyway, onward to glory!  But don't be afraid to run screaming if you get in over your head.  :P

SCSII demi-liches are spellcasters of level 35+, with greatly reduced casting time + all of the natural abilities.
Horrid willings and HLA's fly left and right. (have i mentioned that high level enemy mages have HLA's? Tactics mini-bosses were the only exception, due to SCSII not affecting them) Expect to see dragon's breath not long from now.
I also installed element "Spellstrike takes down protection from magic scroll".
Lastly they use remove magic on protection from undead scroll'd people.

Now, before asking yourself "What are we to encounter in TOB then!?".
To answer as shortly as possible : PAIN

Quote
The two fiend brawls on level 3 (IIRC) may well be impossible at this point.  I doubt Protection from Evil is fully effective in SCS II.  I'd expect Remove Magic and other fun counters (ditto for the demi lich, by the way).

You mean the ones where you obtain hearts? The shade is the toughest fight of them.
Protection from evil might not work, but protection from magical weapons will!

Quote
If you mean what I think you mean, not really.  I think you get at best half of any given recipe pair, with the other half always somewhere in TOB.  Also, I don't think Cromwell's up to the task.  Gotta wait for Cespy.

The party should still score some +3/4 weapons and the +1 quiver &c.  So that's a plus.

There is an anti-paladin-only +5 greatsword in Watchers Keep.
Also - wish scroll.
And most importantly.. a rod that fires ruby rays!

Quote
Also great gobs of XP.

I plan on disabling XP on 2 000 000 to not exceed SOA cap at least before we get to really nasty parts.
When i see them youtube videos of rank 50/50 mage/cleric soloing a vanilla kangaxx, i cannot hope but hunt down such person and.. well, i can not say, to not add any evidence to my mass murder trial.

Quote
Anyway, onward to glory!  But don't be afraid to run screaming if you get in over your head.  :P

I will, but "over your head" for me means everyone but Stworca dead, out of spells, scrolls and no rods of resurrection.
Things really have to go FUBAR for us to escape...

But they will.

On 23rd and 24th i have to defend my grade, and thus free time is scarce at the moment. The LP is not abandoned, it's just delayed - for now.

WK dungeon has a total of 6 levels. It's a shame that 3 died just now. Watcher's Keep level 2 and 3 without trap disarming are true definition of the word "PAIN". Trapped corridors, trapped mazes, trapped puzzle areas, trapped boss fights. And i'm not talking about yo' average arrow trap. These traps kill. Buttrape, no lube.

Yes. Incredible fun. People will die left and right.

I'll have to double check if druids have detect traps spell, if yes, then we can minimize the amount of traps triggered in Demon Wraith fight. If not, i'll send the non-vital party members forward and hope for the best  ;D

We're nearly out of the good potions. Potions of Power will be used for 20% more health, bless & co to aid saves.. Nothing else can be done. I'm not burning protection from magic scroll there.

The best way to do it though is a hastened summon. Summon to soak up spells without endangering any party members. Haste to trigger as many traps as possible before they kill it. Possibly the Efreet. It's very fast, and with haste it can tackle most "red" areas before the finger of death (first trap) kills it.

It's just a plan though. Theory. In practice it can all go wrong.

Normally i'd add another person just now, but it'd be unrealistic, so the 6th party member will probably be Pinky. Still if anyone is interested in joining, i encourage you to speak up.

Ahoy

Due to Chromatic Demon bugging out and often not attacking, i've decided to skip the second WK level in the Let's Play. A shame, but the fight with him was the only interesting part of it.

Which means.. Demon Wraith, 12 o'clock!
Also staring : Yakman, Deck of Many Things, Life-sucking succubi, areas of wild magic, and a giant effin maze, which i always get lost in.  :)

As for the result of the fight. I didn't move Monskine, because enemy abilities in BG2 are always centered upon a character. Only some allow you to outrun them (for example, dragon breath SPELL, not dragon breath-dragon breath).. Also i expected her to survive. A bad damage roll, with mostly high-end dices occurred. Nothing could be done. We had nothing more to protect anyone with.

Sad to see Monskine perma-dead. How difficult is the rest of the keep going to be with only 4 characters?

Nalmissra is often named one of the most difficult vanilla-game fights, and it's not too far from the truth.
From modded fights it's 10-15ish in the "rank", but for sure the most difficult encounter so far.

Ust'Natha (Gotterdammerung..)
Pontifex (the guy we've met already, and wisely skipped!)
Red Badge (which i delayed for after underdark)
Ascension (the last fight in the saga, i wonder if we will get there)
Impr. Asylum adventurers party (coming very, very soon)
Eclipse (very late in tob. People will die there for sure.)
The End Soa battle
Some of the major ToB bosses..

These are more difficult, but that's about it.

Aside from Nalmissra, we'll face two more slightly less challenging encounters, also a dragon fight (offscreen, the dragon is mediocre) a few liches (not demi-, offscreen) and then the Watcher's Keep end boss. To be honest i don't even remember how challenging the end one is or what he does.. I think he is immune to time stop, but we used our scroll. He also summons truckloads of adds, including very, very powerful ones. I hate to admit it, but i will have to fully improvise  ;D

How tough will it be with 4 characters? Vanilla Nalmissra i soloed at rank 16, a year ago, with crappy recording software. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ochVynxW_SE)
The poor quality of the above video was one of the reasons why i wanted to try to solo the improved one. I will think about it. Perhaps you, viewers can give me your thoughts on this subject! The beholder will be the main problem with SCSII, it's ridiculously buffed with it. I think the warrior that dies to skull traps is hastened all the time. I am sure that Y'tossi and Nalmissra get more buffs and teleport around when someone tries to kite them, and the priestess is no longer a useless pile of monkey excrements. Obviously their damage is going to be insane, especially Y'tossi's. You don't want to melee this guy without protections.

Time will tell what happens. But i am taking suggestions!

If we.. ONCE we arrive at Asylum, we'll add new party members. And who knows, maybe our journey will take us to the place where the dead go? Perhaps we will be re-united with all those that have fallen? I know not. Do you?  ;D

Impr. Asylum adventurers party

Is this the one I think it is? The really, really irritating one?

I'm interested to see how you'll handle the Pontifex quest (I think the quest's harder than the boss...), although I guess that'll be much later on. Obviously we'll have to see if you get past Ust'Natha first.

(Bloody forum ate my post twice, gah)

The one which you can not win even with cheating, if you don't know what to do. Braeudynael the drow.. or whatever his name was. The time-stop-immune, always-invisible, untouchable, unkillable mage with endless spells. A parody fight that you're not supposed to even try to win.
I've beaten it back in 0.91 version  ;) We will have Sleep-O keep one of the items (outrage, i know, but it's the least cheesy one i'm after for him)

Quote
I'm interested to see how you'll handle the Pontifex quest

You mean the quest-quest? The ritual?
Or the combat during quest?
I actually wrote a guide on that one, my friend. There is a reason why i'm postponing it to AFTER underdark. I don't want to fight Ira'Kiou'Dneg as we have too many dragon fights ahead of us anyway. Besides, he is not affected by "More hp for dragons" SCSII element, and drops quite easily. Here you can see him dead even before the golems. (http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/87/beztytuusnq.png) With a bioware party (+ Amber) no less.
I may beef up his HP though, and show off the fight. He has some very nasty abilities after all, and is often considered to be the "Top" dragon. But we will see more dragons later.. Many, many more, at once, no less.

Right now i'm focused on Nalmissra though.

I bet some observant viewers have already found the Nalmissra fight  ;) Still i will 'officially' add it to the LP in a bit.

For now i am facing a rather serious problem. Mainly the end boss affects and scripting..
As it is the end boss is absolutely immune to all magic removing effects. From low rank dispel magic to level 9 spellstrike. This is a major problem, because the boss spams stoneskins and protections. Thus it's impossible to kill him without cheese.

If you want it in numbers : He casts PFMW (read : invulnerability) every 36 seconds. It lasts 24 seconds. In the 12 seconds left you have to take down 2 stoneskins (20 successful attacks against an AC of around -18) and after that drop his 400 hp. (another 15-20 successful attacks. All that in the 12 seconds) before he casts another PFMW. If you fail, he will regenerate. At the moment we don't even have enough attacks per round to be able to pull something like that off, even if we scored each and every one. In short : You are supposed to be able to dispel his protections.

There is one non-cheesy way to stop his damned unremovable I-WIN buff chain, it involves chain contingency, lot's of powerful spells unleashed at once. However.. it completely screws up his scripting, making him just go into melee and do nothing else.

This means that i'd have to either kill a pathetic boss that does nothing, or face a cheesy, retarded version of what he should be, that will not get damaged by the party for the entire duration of the fight.

To summ it up, if i will be unable to fix this problem we will SKIP Demogorgon, or at least delay him until late ToB. This is very unfortunate, but i despise cheesy, "fake" difficulty increase, and unremovable buffs do exactly that.

I'm sorry for not posting Nalmissra yet, but i have to know what to do with Demo before i do so.

Regards

Before someone observant asks : Yes, we have taken all of Brunch equipment with us. No way i'm leaving all those flails, shields and maces behind!  :D

Chapter 4 will start in just a bit. I have to edit the intro video and create characters that will be joining us. One of them waits for quite a while, the other got lucky that people don't join our suicidal train too often and we had a vacant spot.

I've killed Firkraag and Kangaxx off screen. Firkraag is less powerful than Saladrex, so there is no need to fight him. Kangaxx is pathetic when compared to the WK lich, besides, demi-liches are boring, so there was no need to record it either. Firkraag and Kangaxx were two very important SoA enemies, but worry not, we;re not out of the woods yet.
As a matter of fact, things will only get worse and worse. The easy part is over.

Chapter 3 was very, VERY boss-heavy. Now things will change. Bosses will be more rare (expect none for quite a few updates), but each one of them will be very likely to end our adventure. There is a total of 5 major bosses on our way to ToB. One of them may appear multiple times, who knows..
And only one boss between us and Ust'Natha....

Heavens have mercy, because the drow city will show none.

Oi  ;)

Yes, we can resurrect him with no problems. Then again, everyone is revivable.

Comments, both positive and negative, are as always welcome. I learn as i go, so to speak, but i can not improve  if i know not what to improve.

Intro video for chapter 4 should be ready soon.
There is a certain epic villain with amazing voice acting that we haven't seen in a while.

One quick info about the current poll : In the long run it does not matter how we get to the Asylum, but depending on which choice we pick, a few updates will be completely different.

Oi!

I shall generate a random name if you don't pick one.. Just sayin'  :P

Also : The next major boss, "Improved Asylum : Adventurers Party" i've decided to tackle :
- solo, with just Stworca.
- no pre-buff at all
- no level 9 spells (normally you don't have these in SoA)
- no scrolls

and of course no resting.

I never tried to solo this fight, so an ironman play is the perfect moment for that  :D

Enemies there are as cheesy as it gets.  I'll make a tech info breakdown of these characters once we get there. But we're talking about a mage that is immune to all weapons, all single target spells, all 1-5 spells, all necromancy, time stops, CC, stat damage.. A mage who heals all enemies if you're out of his visual range, and recovers all lost spells.
That's one of four enemies.

But our robes are fancy....

Overall Sleep-O, Brunch and Unbekannt are quite protected from most common death causes, even on insanity. Stworca laughs at dragons.. But i don't have any gear to spare to the new guys.. They will have to endure without for now.
The Barb is a character that - should he survive that long - will make ToB much, MUCH easier. For now he's just a trash character.

Not much will change till Ust'Natha... Unless we tackle Red Badge before Ust Natha.. Which i would like to do - but it's not for me to decide, and not now.

I will have to play it on stationary PC, thus the resolution will be stuck at 1024 x 768. (was unable to get the altered scripting to work on the laptop)
It SHOULD be relatively smooth now. And by relatively smooth i mean "Freeze for a few seconds every time a wave spawns" as well as "Fps <20, but hopefully >10"

You have to note, that improved Ust' Natha has A LOT of drow, and all of them have massive scripting, path finding calculations, each casts spells, drinks potions, stabs you in the eyes.. and more. My PC handles high end games well, but this right here is still challenging. (HOW many drow? Dwarf Fortress cat problems are similar to this fight..)

We'll have to wait and see. Still, i had to progress the story a bit. In next update we fight the (in)famous Asylum Party.. Although i guess some of you have already found and seen the fight.  ;)

Ust Natha is only three parts away from us. And with Impr. Ust'Natha comes the most hellish fight one can imagine. It was meant to be impossible. It was coded to be impossible. Is it? Stay tuned, folks!

Open to feedback and suggestions, but only regarding the ones we've selected as "Yes".
Ones that i'm not picking are final. Too powerful. Not open for discussion.

Regards!

I say go whatever gives us an update. :P

I mean, I reached the last update and I had a little sad moment, so onwards to glory and (no) less cheesy enemies!

Your wish is my command Akigagak  :P

I have just now successfully recorded the Siege of Ust'Natha.

Over an HOUR long video of constant party on drow combat. It's not a group of encounters, it's one giant battle.

I did it with commentary voiceover, it is obviously a poor attempt (my first one after all) but you don't expect me to add an HOUR of music material to it, now do you?!

The video is compiling just now. I will upload it overnight. Then we will move to happier places, where i don't have to spend a MONTH of my time re-writing scripts to get the damn game to work.

Patience Imoen, soon it will all end!

I'm leaving country for a week, thus i have little time to dish out an update (I will when i'm back home, worry not)

For now, all i have to offer is this terrible-commentary video of the long and painful Siege of Improved Ust Natha (1:08:XX) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYHJgD1O8cs&hd=1)
There is some microphone static, but after the fight starts it's blending in nicely (ha!)

Now you know why i'm not doing any video LP's  ;)

Still, i recommend watching it, even if you decide to disable the volume. This is a unique, ball-breaking encounter that very few people tried at all. Even fewer on insanity.
Regards!

That went well, all things considered. And your English isn't too bad, even if the quality wasn't great.

Well, we won! Hell of a fight too, or wasn't it?

After all, if we remained on the entrance circle, the giant open plane, we would get surrounded and beaten to death with sticks.

Hey there.

Been following this LP after i seen the link on banshee forums. Let me tell you you are awesome :)
I am amazed how you can do all these things and making them look so easy. I myself have installed mods like yourself although i play on core rules since this is my 3rd play (1st modded) but have missed few things from the fine settings in certain mods (used toned down picks if possible).

Great job on the videos, dont know why your bashing your commentary on ust'natha, its sounded pretty good to me (non native english speaker here aswell).

I do have some questions though. I play with custom party of kensai/mage (yeah i know how you like this overused thing, going to dual it at 13 (10 atm)), sorcerer, thief/cleric (dualed at 10) and cavalier. I am trying to play good side and i try to stay of areas with locks/traps for when my thief gets active again (10/10 atm). Where would you recommend to farm for xp? I noticed you have 6 players and by the time you did certain fights you are already few lvl's above me. Where do you get so much xp?? Playing good side btw :)

Also if i missed something while installing mods or used the wrong combination (non insta spells for dragons/fiends/...) how can i change it without reinstalling everything in specified order (that you posted on banshee or is written in scsII). Namely i left out some of the things that were unknown to me but after i read your LP i am inclined i would like to try them.

Anyway, keep up the good work, cant wait for next updated GL & HF!

Skorpijon

p.s. Fingers crossed to complete LP in full

his extra ammount of xp. most likely comes from farming guards, which is also an incredible source of income. in my own playtrough. same mods as stworca. same difficulty. im sitting constantly on 200k+ gold. and i have a good 2.7mil xp and standing at the gates of ust'natha.

good "easy" places for xp includes. the sphere in slums, all the slums quests. main quests (can wait with confronting bhodi/aran  first 2 should net around 55k xp for everyone) the mods however also bring in ALOT of xp. think improved asylum was around 150k+ total. you can also do the de'arnise. firekarg is quite easy xp aswell. since you dont HAVE to confront him for the actual quest succes. the thief stronghold quest is one of the easiest around.

total you should be able to net 1.5mil xp before watchers keep/ending act 3.

How is farming city guards for reputation? A onetime 5-6 rep hit or a constant with each skirmish? I want to play goody two shoes so too much killing guards is not good for my picture of goodness :)

Also can i install improved asylium after i have everything installed? (fixes, ascension, tactics, spell revisions, improved items, scs2, tweaks, widescreen in that order). Or will it conflict with spellrevisions/scs2 (have improved irenicus fight from scs2)?

Anyway, just saw the hour marathon movie of ust natha and i am keeping my fingers crossed for the planned Resurrection of you monks :)

Yes, as long as you dont have the improved asylum from SCSII (nor "take party items" from SCSII)
I installed Imp Asylum as last myself.

It will be relatively easy. I had to play UN on my stationary PC - otherwise it would chop with fraps - and the LP save is on the laptop, where Monks lives. All i need to do is beating Ust Natha with instant mage buffs, with no deaths, and voila!

Hmm.. it sounded easier in my head.

Brunch was a goody too.. once.

Paladins of the Radiant Heart are a good pick. The ones that attack you that is.
We have a lot of xp, because i have cleared Kangaxx, Firkraag, Darnise, Sewers and everything else in the game off screen.
Remember the combat heavy chapter with lots of guards? I believe we had to fight up to twenty waves in Gov district alone, not to mention bridge, docks, slums or promenade. In SCSII they also drop the lovely potions and even high level scrolls.
When Ochita - who had almost all the avaliable scrolls learned - died, guards were the only source of scrolls for Unbekannt.

If the kensai mage dies permanently i will eat my hand in frustration.

Also : Thank You for watching, kind sir. In 3 days i shall be back in Holand, and thus the LP will continue soon! (Morrowind one as well)

Edit : Woo! Good job on Natha, Monx

Hello all, an avid BG2 fan here salutes you all,

My question will be to Stworca;
You mentioned fixing your bugged Spell Trap a few pages before, would you explain how you did it? Same issue here and seems like i'm at a dead end :D

I could only find that too many effects(not spell but creature effects) is one of the culprits (when i edit my save game with near-infinity and remove additional proficiency effects from summoned NPCs at abbysal fortress it works and i'm not even at the abbysal fortress, but just left it, weird ToB secondary area function i think).

anyways, thanks in advance, save me and my hairs :D

I assume that you have installed Improved Asylum, ran?

You need either two installations of BG2 (one of which has a WORKING spell trap) or a total re-install.

Total re-install route : Replace the SpWi902 file in Improved Asylum instalation folder, with SpWi902 from your override folder BEFORE installing the mod.

Two installations route : Open the spell with DLTCEP, and replace all the broken variables with the working ones. There is a problem with a negative number somewhere along the way.

How to test if its working : Create a sorcerer in ToB, CLUAConsole him a ton of experience, add the following spells : Project Image, Spell Trap, Imprisonment.
Cast spell trap, follow it by project image. Next cast imprisonment spells using your image. Afterwards Kill the image once the spell trap is overpowered with the imprison spells.. And check if you got any spells back. (I check this before and after installing SCSII, as well as after installing the last mod)

I have no idea how to fix it for Spell Revisions (should you have it) nor whether or not there are easier routes to do the above.

Edit final:

Spell revision change descriptions for spell trap and from then on it stops working (sizre 2.025 or something bytes). I have replaced the file from SR with the original (size: 778 bytes). After i installed SCS2 it change in size again but after testing it was working (size: 826 bytes). When i installed improved asylium last, it had the same length file in the install directory. I overridden it just in case with SCS2 one (size: 826 bytes). Still didnt work so i manually overwritten the file in override directory with the backup from SCS2 that i made. Now it works.

On topic:
Whats the plan for the next update, cant wait :D

To ease up your wait, kind viewers, i hereby present you yet another Ust Natha video! This time, my microphone is fixed and the quality is higher! This time, it's a co-commentary video! This time, we are using Bioware characters! This time, we.. FAIL!

Why would we fail?

Perhaps the video name will give it away :

Improved Ust Natha Fail : Raging Minsc (Co-commentary with Xaio30!) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygLmU9jlWKI&hd=1)

It's not a part of the LP, so it does not brake ze Ironman rules.
Also : I normally would not ever show a FAIL video, but this.. This was just Minsc-tastic!
Warning : I do use some f- words through the course of the video!

Update is.. You wouldn't imagine how many issues i'm having with getting the (saved) game to run :( We have some footage though, and i will try to capitalize on that soon!
I just thought that them viewers (That's You, viewer) deserve a special treat!

Kudos to everyone who figured the plot twist out before this update. I left a hint or two in the previous updates.
Not a long update, but i'm warming up after a long period of nothingness. The game is finally working again, my rage meter went down from all those 10 re-installations per day, and..
It's good to see you again, viewer!
