Title: Let's Play: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Post by: Judas Maccabeus on April 18, 2010, 04:37:41 pm
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/Maccabeus/kotor/kotor001.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/Maccabeus/kotor/kotor002.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/Maccabeus/kotor/kotor003.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/Maccabeus/kotor/kotor004.jpg)

I'm sure you all know what Star Wars is.  If you don't, welcome back to the real world from the rock you've been living under for the previous thirty-three years.  Aside from the six movies that form the basis of the franchise, there are innumerable novels, comic books, a holiday special (no holiday special exists, nope, not at all), animated series, and so forth.  Perhaps where the so-called "expanded universe" has most shined, however, are in the video games (to be fair, the rest of the expanded universe is of... far less than stellar [pun intended] quality, but that's neither here nor there).

Pictured:  Darth Malak, Sith fighters, the Ebon Hawk, HK-47, T3-M4, a random Selkath (for some reason), Bastila Shan, and Sith ground forces.

Knights of the Old Republic is set several millenia before the movies themselves, in a Galactic Republic reeling from two bloody wars and in the midst of a third.  The Great Sith War against a former Jedi, Exar Kun, had revived the Sith in a new form, and soon after a warlike race called the Mandalorians attempted to conquer the Republic.  It seemed for a time after these wars that the Republic would have a chance to rebuild; however, not long after, the disappeared heroes of the Mandalorian Wars, Revan and Malak, returned as conquerors at the head of a vast fleet.  Where they had gotten it, and why they had turned on the Republic, noone was sure, but not even the loss of Revan could stop their assault.  The Republic and Admiral Forn Dodonna have a secret weapon, however: Bastila Shan, a Jedi skilled in using a power known as Battle Meditation to turn the tide of a battle.  She, a skilled pilot named Carth Onasi, and a member of the Republic Army suddenly assigned to the ship have been sent on a mission aboard the Endar Spire...

Character Creation

Yes, it's that time again.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

(Note:  Canonically, the main character is male and went down the Light Side path.  We aren't limited to that, of course, although the regular romance option for male characters is vastly less annoying than the female one [there's something of a secondary option for female characters, but it's not very developed and I'll get to that later], if that factors into your decision at all.)

The Cast
(organised by the group they belong to at first meeting)

Galactic Republic

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/Maccabeus/kotor/hazar.png):  Hazar Denolo (No voice actor).  The main character, a smuggler roped into becoming a member of the Republic fleet.  Now in training to become a Jedi.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/Maccabeus/kotor/trask.png):  Trask Ulgo (Cam Clarke).  Your one-stop shop for all your exposition needs.  Killed by a Dark Jedi on the Endar Spire.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/Maccabeus/kotor/carth.png):  Carth Onasi (Raphael Sbarge).  Captain in the Republic Navy, piloting the Endar Spire when it came under attack.  Not killed by a Dark Jedi.

The Jedi

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/Maccabeus/kotor/bastila.png): Bastila Shan (Jennifer Hale).  A young Jedi Padawan who has become important due to her ability to turn the tide of battles.  Rescues herself from a swoop gang on Taris and lets us join her party.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/Maccabeus/kotor/vrook.png): Vrook Lamar (Edward Asner).  Member of the Dantooine Enclave council, as well as the Jedi High Council on Coruscant.  Is the most concerned at the idea of training us to be a Jedi.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/Maccabeus/kotor/Vandar.png): Vandar Tokare (Tom Kane).  Leader of the Dantooine Enclave, and is one of the same unnamed species as Yoda belongs to.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/Maccabeus/kotor/juhani.png): Juhani (Courtenay Taylor).  A Cathar training to become a Jedi, who falls to the dark side after thinking she killed her Master.  Hazar turns her back and she rejoins the Jedi Order.

The Sith

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/Maccabeus/kotor/malak.png): Darth Malak (Rafael Ferrer).  Dark Lord of the Sith, having gained the title the old fashioned way when he decided to kill Darth Revan.  Born Alek Squinquargesimus, which is Latin for "Sfiftrieth".*
*Seriously.  "quinquagesimus" is "fiftieth"...

Saul Karath (uncredited).  Admiral of the Sith Fleet, formerly with the Republic fleet during the Mandalorian Wars.  He still holds some concern for excessive casualties, but when it comes time to perform his orders he does so and doesn't look back - even if he must kill an entire planet.

The Exchange

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/Maccabeus/kotor/calonord.png):  Calo Nord (uncredited).  Galaxy-famous bounty hunter, doesn't like to talk and doesn't like people who talk to him.  Gets a turbolaser blast to the head trying to get off Taris.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/Maccabeus/kotor/canderous.png): Canderous Ordo (John Cygan).  A former Mandalorian soldier who, like many of his people, has turned to mercenary work.  Joins with Hazar to steal the Ebon Hawk and get off Taris.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/Maccabeus/kotor/t3.png): T3-M4 (beeps and whistles).  A top of the line utility droid built by Janice Nall of Taris for the leader of the Exchange.  Hazar threatens her to get it for free and use it in one of Canderous' plan, and no reason not to bring it along afterwards.

Hidden Beks

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/Maccabeus/kotor/mission.png):  Mission Vao (Cat Taber).  A young Twi'lek orphan who grew up on the streets of the Taris Lower City.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/Maccabeus/kotor/zaalbar.png)  Zaalbar (Series of generic Wookiee grunts).  Mission's close friend and protector.

More to come once we meet more people, of course.

YEAH, LIGHT SIDE SCOUNDREL, BLASTERS ONLY, FINAL DESTINATION!

Post by: Judas Maccabeus on April 18, 2010, 05:09:49 pm
Hmph, I was hoping to be a little bit serious about this....  :P

(Besides, "blasters only" isn't all that great an idea in this game.  KotOR 2, maybe, but not here...  Light Side Scoundrel definitely works quite fine, though.  :) )

Fine, we'll be ninja Han Solo. Hand-to-hand only.

Light side scoundrel, dual wield, no armour, male if you like.
Title: Re: Let's Play: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Post by: Spartan 117 on April 18, 2010, 05:20:01 pm
Dual wield is okay too I guess.

One thing I like to do is to dual wield lightsabers, and have one blue and one red.

Then I'd go around saving people and hugging kittens and stuff, before electrocuting bad guys to death en mass.
Title: Re: Let's Play: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Post by: zchris13 on April 18, 2010, 05:39:29 pm
No, but seriously, scoundrel, try to be as neutral as possible until you have to go light side.

No super heavy armor, either.
Title: Re: Let's Play: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Post by: Phantom on April 18, 2010, 06:31:36 pm
Wait, Light Side Male Soldier who becomes Light Side Male Jedi Guardian Light Saber Duel Wielder.
Well, I actually don't care about starting class. Just as long as we duel wield swords or heavy blasters.

In the starting area, take the other guys blaster (And sword.) Get the Long Swords later on in the level. Electrocute bad guys on the way to escape pod and take the prototype vibro blade.

I beat this game, twice to have you know. Although I was never able to free this Republic Prisoners on Korriban.

For most fun: DS Scout 2/Consular 18. ~450 FP and you can Force Kill/Force Storm/Death Field 100 enemies in a row before draining force. Heavy armor actually gives more AC due to AC type stacking rules (Jedi robe AC does not stack with powers) -- except maybe for a 28+ Dex. build, I can't remember -- but it limits the fun powers.

And whatever you do, don't go with a LS Consular unless you enjoy Force Waving every enemy to death.

Also, I'm absolutely terrible at Pazaak, no matter how many strategies I collect for it.  Just one of those things, I suppose.  So I doubt I'd ever do well enough to be accused of cheating...  :P

Alright, starting to play now, will post the next part when that's done.

How?! Basically, you get +/- cards of any sort and you win the game. It's like playing poker pontoon but with a bunch of side deck jokers.

Also, we should tap Bastila or whatever.

EDIT I'm a moron.

Taris:  Carth Talks a Lot

There is a lot of talking in this update, and it's a pain to transcribe.  Basically, this section is setting up the rest of the planet; there's actual combat once we start descending to the lower levels.

Spoiler: Abandoned Apartment (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Upper City South (click to show/hide)

Second part from this playing session coming tomorrow - it's getting a bit late, and this one is running long from all the dialogue... so if you notice something we didn't get to (and that's a lot), just wait until then.

What? I just said "KILL SOME BLOODY AFVAYVFAFSvY WITH A SHITLOAD OF MINES"

In fact, I don't even remember if it's possible to kill it.

Phantom, you go out of your way to spoil every damn game you pop up in. You give up things that are possibly HOURS away in the story. Seriously, either put it in spoiler tags or I'm reporting you next time.

I've considered trying that. It's not just your threads, it's every one that involves a game. He pops up, "innocently" tells you to go do something, explaining all the twists and turns of the plot along the way, and then leaves. It's annoying, and I'm considering requesting Toady to tell him to stop. I figure if dozens of his fellow forum-goers can't stop him, maybe somebody with a big name can.

Hehe, no, sorry.  Believe me, I've tried to do that myself before.  Ah, well, as they say, never bring a knife to a gunfight, and never bring a gun to a lightsaber fight (unless it's KotOR 2).

We should go down the goody two shoes path till some stressful situation that causes us to snap and kill everybody in the immediate area.

If we do Korriban like I like doing, you'll get your wish (not that it counts as leaving the good path, technically).  ;)

Note that I had no idea what you were supposed to do the first time I played this game, and I've been using the grenade volley ever since.  It's certainly a lot more fun.

I did that "duck into the door and shoot it at pistols". I didn't even think of throwing grenades. And, no, I don't think I ever used that order. "Snort, snort"? Ugh.

You should have worked for the Black Vulkar. For the hilarity, of course. Also, because I never was able to complete that quest line...

Also, is the Rukil's Promised Land real? Have we been to it even?

What brings down the Galactic Republic?  It isn't the long social decline and bureaucratic bloating that is mentioned in the movies, but instead the machniations of Darth Sidious.

The original script for Star Wars had the hero named Starkiller, and the enemy being either a corrupt Emperor (and not the Empire, the Jedi loves the Empire), an Evil Empire that destroyed the Good Empire, or:
Quote
The Republic Galactica is dead - ruthless trader barons have replaced democracy with the First Galactic Empire. The Jedi knights were the guardians of peace in the galaxy for more than a thousand years, but now they are all but extinct, destroyed by the Emperor's agents: the Dark Lords of the Sith. The Jedi and the Sith are both users of "the Force of Others", an energy field which controls one's actions, yet obeys one's commands. Two sides of the Force are always present: a positive side, which the Jedi store in themselves, and a negative side (called the Bogan), which is used by the Sith. Either side can be amplified using a "Kiber Crystal", but all known crystals have fallen in the hands of the Dark Lords. However, Rebel Armies have won a crushing victory over the Imperial Starfleet, and the Emperor - afraid of losing control of the Outland systems - has sent his most ferocious Dark Lord to find and destroy the rebels.

Quote
Once there was a holy man called the Skywalker who discovered an energy field which could influence the destiny of all living things. Known as "the force of others", it consists of a good half (the Ashla), which the Skywalker came to know, and an evil part (the Bogan) which he was able to resist. His powers grew strong, helping him to found the Republic Galactica, but since the Bogan can bring much suffering in the hands of someone weak, he entrusted his secret only to his twelve children. For many thousand years, the descendants of the Skywalker (known as the Jedi Bendu of the Ashla) served the force of others and brought peace to the galaxy. As the Republic grew, however, the Great Senate became corrupted, and the Jedi who interfered were denounced as traitors. Wars and terrorism increased to the point where citizens welcomed a police state, and the tyrannical First Galactic Empire was born. A Jedi named Darklighter fell victim to the Bogan, teaching its evil ways to a pirate clan known as the Black Knights of the Sith, who became Imperial servants and hunted down and killed most of the Jedi. Now, a growing rebel Alliance led by the Starkiller (a surviving Jedi) has won a crucial victory over the Imperial fleet, but the Bogan is very strong, weakening the old Jedi. However, according to the prophecies, a saviour shall come - known as "the son of the suns".

The early drafts of Star Wars (or The Journal of the Whills, or Adventures of the Starkiller, or any name it went through) had all sorts of different things, like the main characters being Mace Windy and his padawaan C.J. Thorpe, or Luke's father being alive and well and not Darth Vader, or poor Montross who never made it into the final story... in any case, it's all not part of the finished story, and therefore not all that relevant.

..Oh, and didn't Kreia said the Republic will fall, a fall that will last for millenia?

Kreia said a lot of things, she wasn't necessarily right about everything.  In any case, it was more of a series of sudden falls and recoveries, until finally the last fall was a complete one.  You could probably find socioeconomic forces behind all of them, but that's not what the movies/books/comics/games tend to focus on (just like, in actual history, the Great Man theory downplays actual socioeconomic forces in favour of the actions of certain people)...

True. But, see, when she said, "last for millennia", that doesn't have to refer to Palpatine. I don't think the Republic has stopped falling...it was, after all, resurrected after ROTJ, and it is now currently a remnant fighting with/against an Empire run by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

This LP has been great so far, keep it up!

I hate most of the Expanded Universe. Corran Horn was a fun character (I, Jedi remains one of my favorite books), Mara Jade was great, but out side of them and Wraith Squadron, it's all shit. The Yuuzhan Vong invasion marked the end of the whole thing for me.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

...Why did you spoiler all that?  There's nothing to spoil in it.

Bastila never said she hadn't had time to get her Battle Meditation going; Carth speculated as much, but that was only speculation.  The Endar Spire was ambushed by the Sith fleet, presumably pulled out of hyperspace by Malak's ship (the Leviathan, which is an "interdiction" ship that can pull a ship out of hyperspace) while travelling the major hyperspace route that passes by Taris.  She no doubt tried to get the battle meditation going, but there were too many Sith ships around and it wasn't enough.  As for the lightsaber, she was probably a bit groggy and disoriented from the crash, and she's not the sharpest vibroblade in the drawer - she has an amusingly low Wisdom score, and it shows.

Fortunately, there's a crystal cave on Dantooine where we can get new crystals.  I agree on yellow, though only for the reason that Bastila already uses that - I like colour-coding my party members.  :P

I don't think there are pink crystals in this game.  There are purple ones, though.

I kind of agree with what Carth says about Quatra's teaching method. Screwing with the very soul of one of your students doesn't seem like someone following the Light side of the Force would do.

And for Elise's droid, I'm pretty sure that Mission has a power cell-operated-boyfriend she can borrow. Same thing, really.

Bah you should of killed the chick, she obviously is too great a threat to the Jedi, you must eliminate her before she stabs you all in the back!

...Are you kidding?  She's about as dangerous as a newborn bantha calf, judging from the ease of the fight against her...

Too bad, the early vote was for a Light Side game and I'm sticking to that.  ;)

I've always felt they missed a joke in there.

After Rahasia tells you they'll name their children after you, at least Shen should have said "What!?", in a terrified tone.

Seriously, girl moves quick. One minute, at home. Next, she's roped her both her father and her boyfriends father into buying them a house, and now she's talking babies. Brother needs to run! D:

The Star Map

Spoiler: Ruins (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Back at the Enclave (click to show/hide)

Alright, time for our decision.  We have five planets we can travel to, four of which have the Star Maps we're loking for:

- Tatooine, a desert planet deep in the Outer Rim.
- Kashyyyk, a densely-forested planet that is home to the Wookiees.
- Manaan, an oceanic planet and home to the Selkath.
- Korriban, a barren planet and the birthplace of the ancient Sith.
- Yavin, a gas giant whose fourth moon was the site of the death of Exar Kun.  This one appears to have been put into the computer by Davik, not the Jedi Council.

I'd like to visit Korriban last of the four Star Map planets, for minor story reasons, and Manaan after Kashyyyk, because a party member picked up on the latter plays a role in a side plot on the former.  Any other order is fine, of course.
____________
*DEFINITIONAL NOTE:

Intergalactic:  Between or among separate galaxies.
Intragalactic:  Within one single galaxy.

Star Wars takes place in a single galaxy.  Please get it right.

Mission didn't get it right. Why should we? ...Or should we conclude that The Exchange is secretly doing business with the Vong?

...Oh, and Yavin. That's the only planet I haven't gotten to yet. Because I have an Xbox with no Xbox Liev.

My order, when playing, is usually

Tatooine, Yavin, Kashyyyk, Korriban, and Manaan. However, I'm going to mix it up this time. I suggest

Tatooine, Yavin, Kashyyyk, Manaan, and Korriban. You know, mix it up a bit. Throw people for a loop.

Wait what? Yavin? Oh right, computer version.

As a note: Manaan is so goddamn annoying, do it last.

Hazar and Sasha at Yavin

It's a tie between Tatooine and Yavin; I'll go with the latter, since it's really short.  I'd like a bit of a quick one after Taris taking so long that I think we're actually fighting against Darth Krayt now.

Also, I hope you like dialogue.  There's a lot of it this update.  Much of it not in "Basic".

Maybe he was going senile. He was over 900 years old.

I haven't actually heard anyone else of Yoda's race speak, the only time I recall seeing another <WTF are they called?> in the movies was one guy with no particular reason to be there at the end of Epsidode I.
