Title: Truly, they were as gods who made this place
Post by: GRead on March 28, 2008, 08:15:00 pm
OK, so I had an idea the other day.

If you had all the resources you could possibly desire, what amazing structures would you build? A shimmering crystal city? The dreaded Iron Tower? Deep catacombs that spread beneath the very earth? a city of gold?

Of course, by modifying the raw files, you can have limitless resources of whatever type you desire. The caveat being, of course, that it removes allot of the challenge from the game, and really, it's not so spiffy cheating yourself a gold city you can't show off.

So, in light of all this, the Idea I had was this: What if there was a community world, where everyone cheated like crazy. The idea isn't just a community fortress with claimed dwarves, or even a succession game where you pass around the keys to the fortress: The Idea is a succession world. Everyone joins in with the knowledge that we'll be modifying the reactions to give ourselves boatloads of free materials, and then we take turns building crazy ruins, vast cities, enormous necropolis', anything else that strikes the mind really. Then, when it's all done, the world will be open for adventuring in and looking at the things everyone else has wrought.

It's not really about challenging yourself, it's certainly not about story: no more than a little blurb about the place you've built is really necessary. It's about building, building that amazing structure you've always wanted to build but weren't prepared to wait for 50 years of caravan deliveries to get the materials just to build the first floor.

Does this Idea interest anyone?

---edit---
Apparently so! Adding a roster to the front page here and getting this thing rolling.

code:
 1:Ricemastah - Done?
2:Mech#4
3:Boksi
4:THLawrence
5:Torak
6:Niaba
7:GRead
8 :Devath
9:Elitay
10:

As THLawrence noted on page 2, there are some important things to consider:
1: In order to maximize compatibility, the world will be genned in Vanilla DF; worlds don't care so much if you have raw entries they don't, but they care very
much if you're short on them.

2: Cheat. Cheat like crazy. The idea is to build an awe-inspiring structure, but it's also to do it in a reasonable amount of time. to facilitate this, mod the reactions raws to create free materials without fuel. It may be helpful to have a seperate install of DF for this, so you don't mess with the raws you'll be playing with otherwise: all modifications will have to be to the basic reactions, as the world won't recognize any new additions.
Example: You can go into the adamantine reaction and change it to produce 100 rock crystal and 100 pearlash without any input reagents. you cannot go into the reactions and create a new entry that makes 100 rock crystal and 100 pearlash.
Other things include utilities like Companion or setting your dwarves speed to 1.

3: Keep your init in mind when creating the fortress; just because you or I turn off temperature and caveins doesn't mean other people will. so try to avoid messing with the settings to make an ice fortress in the sahara or a tropical paradise where Nist Akath once stood. Floating cities may fall from the sky for some people, and magma might suddenly melt your golden floodgates.

4: Traps are currently buggy. Try to avoid using the default mechanism-traps, *especially* cage traps.

5: Lengthy progress reports are unnecessary, but if things are taking awhile you should probably let everyone know you're still alive and working.

Thanks to everyone for contributing so far! here's hoping we can work some of the kinks out of the succession world concept.

Massive tree.  Inside is a mini-fortress running in the hollow branches and trunk.  Wood part is made out of, well, wood.  Leaves made from green glass (this idea was posted by someone else, and I got to thinking about it).

The undercastle.  I tried making one a while ago, but it didn't turn out all that well.

Sewer system.   I know it doesn't sound that impressive, but you don't know what I'm thinking of when I say this...   Heh heh.

The underworld.  See "underworld challenge" in the fort-mode discussion.

The doomtower.  Massive obsidian pillar rising up to the sky, with various spikey outcroppsings where I happen to need a little extra room, and a magma moat around the outside.

Human castle.  Simple enough, just a big fortified keep with surrounding common lands which are protected by a big stone wall, with functioning moat, drawbridge, and portcullis.

Shipwreck.  Bits and pieces of a massive galleon on an ocean shore.

I have one really good one. Sunken Atlantean ruin.

Channel out all but the border of an aquifer layer to make a giant lake, seal the outside of the aquifer using pumps and construction, then drain the lake. Remove the drainage system, then build a giant clear glass city in the deeps with dozens of domed subdivisions sectioned off, able to be individually drained and filled by lever-controlled self-powered pumps (They'd have to be started manually, but after that, they'd run till the lever's switched off. The blueprint makes sense in my head).

Bonus points for building the city around one or more central glass spires which go from the very bottom of the map to the very top. If its at all possible to find an aquifer and magma on the same map, bonus points for filling a core of the spire with lava for channeling to the forges and furnaces. If not, channel out a wide river leading off the map (and dammed to a height high enough to keep the lake full and low enough not to overflow its bed), then make the above-water portion of the spire a giant self-powered waterfall.

Build residential, commercial and industrial domes with easy access to each other, Sim-City style. Use z-level accessways between domes as well as horizontal. All individual homes, warehouses, offices and workshops should be built in separate stone buildings or apartment complexes. Any outdoor flooring may be made either of stone or colored glass. Each dome at least should be covered in a clear glass roof. Give the buildings as many gem windows as possible. Build a special room or plaza to showcase each artifact, and another to honor each legendary dwarf. Make as many rooms royal quality as possible, either through artifacts or lots of masterpiece stuff. If there was sufficient forward planning to use natural stone for the buildings, engrave them.

Fill the whole place with outdoor plazas, statuaries, menageries, fountains, amphitheaters, irrigated gardens and farms. Menageries would have bars and free-roaming animals, not just cages, and fountains would all work on a self-contained, self-powered water system.

If the map has underground water, add tree farms. If it has a chasm, add a lever in a hard-to-reach central control room  that diverts the rest of the lake into a chasm, allowing the player to destroy his framerate and access the lakebed. If not, make one that opens a dam at the bottom of the lake bed and drains it off the map. If the map has Hidden Fun Stuff, build a special dome over it, seal it up, and build a glass temple to Armok above it with a lever-controlled trap near the altar so that sacrificial victims can be dropped within. Make another dome a City of the Dead and fill it with tombs for nobles and legendaries, plus a Great Hall of the Fallen featuring an alcove, statue, and casket for all remaining dwarves.

The only entrance to the final city should be through a series of natural stone tunnels beneath a small log cabin on shore. (Exception: there will have to be *some* construction where it punctures the aquifer) If possible, place lever-controlled adamantine double doors or floodgates to seal the entrance in an engraved subterranean gallery.

Remove the blockages to the remaining aquifer squares and let the whole thing flood over. For bonus points, build the cliffs around the lake even higher and pump water from the aquifer square to raise the water level of the lake. Flood all the domes one by one, killing all the dwarves except a legendary engraver as it progresses. Once he is the last dwarf alive, engrave the stone tunnels, producing masterpiece mementos to the glory of the city and its destruction by flood.

Then abandon the fort for adventurers to find and drool over. Extra points for modding in a race of amphibious sentients who could take the place over and challenge adventurers or reclaimers. Bullywugs, anyone?

Massive obsidian fortress, both above and underground, built around a central magma vent. It is encircled with bands of magma. It menaces with spikes of steel towers. Then an inner sanctum around the vent, made out of obsidian, gold and some red material, preferably rubies.

Another project I'd like to do would be to completely remove all the ground I can, down to the lowest level, then build a massive city of interconnected towers, preferably somewhat submerged if possible. The materials would be glass, marble, gold and bronze mainly.

the whole outside world covered in cristal glass flooers and occasional upright cristal glass spikes, making it look like a crystal forest. Below it, a forest walled with gold.

A clear glass castle.

it's... possible, but, it's a huge pain to do it.

Post by: Kagus on March 29, 2008, 11:40:00 am
Oh yeah, I forgot one.  Mainly because It's not that impossible (wouldn't crystal glass be more fun than just clear?), and I actually intend to do it sometime.

The Infernal Temple.

Bottom level of the world, centered around a demon pit.  A massive circular chamber carved out for two z-levels off the bottom floor.  Around the pit is a bauxite pentagram, and at the intersection of each point with the ring around the star, there stands a candle (tallow pillar).  Directly adjacent to the pit there is an elevated altar, from which creatures may be thrown into the pit to appease the dark gods.

I might pave the area around the pit with gold or somesuch...

Hmmmm, it appears that I didn't exactly communicate what I had in my mind!
Loving the replies so far, but what I was actually suggesting is that a group of people build these very things you have suggested, using an install of Dwarf Fortress that repurposes the traditional reactions to create free materials.

I.E., the only reason I haven't built a crystal glass spire in the middle of a lake is the sheer impossibility of getting that much rock crystal. It would take thousands of caravans to get enough. But if you modify one of the reactions in the raws to, say, spew out 100 rock crystals and 100 pearlash without any input materials, it becomes allot more possible. Hence the 'blatant cheating'

But it kind of ruins the fun to just do that by yourself. You know, 'woohoo, I was able to create an amazing monument by cheating. I could have just sketched this out on paper and be just as fulfilled.' so the idea was to have a succession world; instead of a succession game, where you pass the fortress off every year, you pass the world off every time you finish a monument\fortress. Then when it's done the world is there for adventuring.

The cheating lets the amazing feats of engineering get completed in a much more timely manner. Since the point is about what your imagination can come up with and not the process of getting there, I think it would be fun to build something to show off to everyone else. It's one thing to make it for yourself, another to make it for everyone as part of a big project.

Hence why I suspect I may just be crazy, and am wondering if anyone else finds the idea intriguing.

Yeah, I'm interested.

I recommend placing about twenty placeholder reactions. From what I've gathered, it's possible to modify these reactions to produce what you want, but not to add more.

Well, you see, the problem with this is that the succession world thing doesn't really work out.  Our first attempt at this was Adventure Park and the fact is that it simply takes to long to build something truly magnificent and when you've finally got it done, everyone's gone and lost interest.

I have a vision of carving a giant elephant head built into the side of a cliff. Until we get mass rewall, I can dream about...

-space for at least 200 Dwarves to live.
-2 Crystal glass eyes, for the nobles quarters
-2 giant tusks-made from real ivory!
-10 ballistas that shoot out of the mouth
-A massive trunk to dump refuse out of

Oh, don't make the eyes out of crystal glass.

Use rubies.

That would be a great place to put the fortress I was gunna do. Built in a chasm out of clear glass with the bottom of the chasm floored over and then the chasm filled with magma (Refilling vents FTW!)

I'm a little busy with life ATM (Y'know, that thing that's kinda like dwarf fortress but with fewer dangerous predators, less vomit, and more madmen), but if this goes on for awhile and someone makes the mod, I would certainly be willing to try building that monstrosity.
Title: Re: Truly, they were as gods who made this place

Instead of modding reactions and adding placeholder ones, just mod the adamantine reaction. It would be easy enough, and I am already doing it. When I finish my current fort (above ground castle with labyrinth for access) and a few other ones I may post a save. Admittedly the forts have all been heavily reliant on the limitless materials, but that was because they were going to be originally designed for adventurers. If anyone is interested I will redouble my efforts on the constructions.

Question here... Would it be possible to merge saves together? Give save A precidence over historical events or somesuch...

It'd make it so that everyone picks out one square of the game world to work at, and can work simultaniously.

Personaly I'd like to make a clear glass Stairway to Heaven. With waterfalls and magma. I'd need a chasm drain, but it'd work nicely with the obsidian and flames at the bottom being a paralell of hell.

Also, would a bauxite/steel pump transmit magma/lava?

Title: Re: Truly, they were as gods who made this place
Post by: bigmcstrongmuscle on March 30, 2008, 12:18:00 am
Don't think so with the saves, but yes, bauxite/steel transmits lava. You just hafta make sure all the parts of everything are lavaproof.

Epic. Lavafall, here I come... Let's see them try and run up to the gates now...

Also... Why, exactly, can't the saves be combined? Can the obstacles be surmounted?

Iron also resists lava. And anything as a floor or a wall is immune to lava.

Workers grab the closest available material for a job, excluding z-levels, using a straight line path. Just stick the workshop in the middle of a bunch of bauxite, and remove any other stone anywhere near the workshop on any z-level.

Damn, I just found out you can't build tallow walls/roads anymore...  I'd have to mod in new materials and reactions in order to make the candles.

But, while I was at it, I could make a material called "wick", which could have a lower ignition point than heat damage.  This should theoretically produce an ever-burning wick.

Then I'd just need some magma to light them, and I'd be set...

Then simply edit them to suit whatever your fort will need.

But back to the main point of this post.
We should set up a roster and start this thing. I'd like to join. But not first. Maybe eighth or somewhere around there.

How about living candles? Install chains in the five points of the pentagram, surrounded by grates. Make a lava pit below the pentagram, and a reservoir above. Living sacrifices are chained to the points and ignited with magma, which seeps into the pit below.

It's a fun idea, but they never last long enough to justify the effort.  Besides, I'd rather have an unlit tallow pillar than a lit elf.  I know that's somewhat blasphemous, but considering the circumstances that works just fine.

Ok lets put together a roster:
code:

1:
2:
3:
4:
5:
6:
7:
8:THLawrence
9:
10:

Players who need to pick a spot:
Gread, Boksi, Mech#4

Important Things to Remember:
1: Please note that the only thing that will be distributed will be the save. You can mod the vanilla reactions.
2: If you think your dwarves will take to long to build something cool, set them to [SPEED:1]. You may cheat when building your fort. It is allowed.
When building your fort please plan it for when all init options are on. You do not have to have it them on if your processor can't take it but other people using adventurers to visit your fort will. If you really want a floating castle with no connection to the ground please post a warning on this thread.
3: If your fort will take a prolonged period of time or you have been unable to work on it please post and tell us that it has been delayed temporarily. This will help.
4: Please post a progress report at least once a week. A progress report can be as little as: "I'm up to the 18th floor on my crystal glass spire. Should be done soon." or even "Still working on it."
5: In order to stream line things the raws will not be distributed.
6: No cage traps. They freeze peoples games.

Thank-you

P.S.
GRead can you edit your first post to include the roster and the rules.
Additional suggestions are open until the first player starts.

Also a question:
Do items in buildings or the trade depot stay put? What about items in bins on stockpiles?

If you use both the Raws and DF companion you can build things really fast. I built a 15 story marble block 4x4 tower in a little over half an hour. Now I'm going to go try the designator tool.

The designator tool kicks ass. I just made an 8x8 rough andesite tower 28 floors high. Took less then 3 minutes.
Alright it also took a while to figure out a problem with allocation but I've figured that out.

The designator tool just became even better. I turned the entire bottom level of a map into a chasm. Quit, turned cave-ins on, reloaded, and watched as the whole map just caved-in.

Sorted the .raw thing out myself as it turns out. I've now got a game going with emotionless, tireless Dwarves who need no food or drink and have a punch ranging from 5 to 20.  :D

Though it does leave me with a lot less things to do...

YOu can sign me up for this now. I'll have to think of something to build...

I could start as soon as I get the go-ahead. You can sign me up for the first spot if you want.

Well, except on 3. April, but that's because I have so much stuff to do then. I also have a lot of stuff to do on Mondays, although I do have a little leeway sometimes.

Reading the first post it seems like GRead has decided to take the first position.

Also can I be moved up a bit. I'm moving in under a month and would like to get my turn in before that. Also since exams are coming up soon I should have a bit of free time. Could I get the 4th slot please.

Finally, what are you making GRead? Or this going to be one of those send in your adventurer and find out things?

I put myself in slot 1 because I suggested the topic and, at the time I put it there, only you had asked for a slot and wanted slot #8. I don't really care who goes first, but I've genned the world and am working on getting designator to do my bidding so...

Right now I'm planning on building a massive crystal forest with habitation towers reaching down into a deep artificial lake. Not exactly inspired but it should be interesting.

edit
can't figure out a way to make specific rocks from it; sadness. my plans for a giant tower of diamond appear to be given difficulty...

Hmm... I'll take... spot 3.

Oh, I'm presuming this uses v .38c?

One more thing... is there any code line I can add to dwarves to stop them from taking breaks? It's the only thing at the moment that's stopping them from working continuously.

Well if you gave them the NOTHOUGHT tag then you can just draft and undraft them. They won't get any negative thoughts.
Gread, are you building your forest out of? Diamond or crystal glass? neither of them can be made using the designator tool so you have to build them using dwarves. Truth be told, I started a small map to see if I could do the same thing as you. My only problem has been lack of imagination on what it should look like.

My original intent was to mark a large area as diamond clusters and then smooth and use them as 'natural diamond walls' that I could then engrave.
Unfortunately gemstones seem to be independant of the values the designator edits.
I'm also running into some major problems with designator that forced me to abandon the current design; as it's been taking me awhile if anyone wants to take the number 1 place in my stead I won't be offended. It looks like I need to get some of the kinks worked out of this first and may end up changing the plan in the process.
If I go ahead with this one it will be made from gem blocks and gem furniture. still unsure though.

I'm in. I will make the terror-cube. A giant cube of obsidian that contains the entire fortress. Farms, forges, and all. I might also rig up a magma-spew system to destroy the traitorous infidels. Aka elves.

A little case study for my upcoming fortress:

The actual board is obsidian and ruby blocks, with most statues being exceptional gold/steel ones. The king and queen equivalents are masterwork statues.

One question about this.

Is it creating one world and then sending the save file to the next person on the list or are we all creating one world each and combining all the games into one .zip/.rar file?

I thought it was one world and sending the save file around.

By the way, GRead have you been working on it or did you pass your turn? Your last post wasn't completely clear.

since all my experiments with merging saves have failed, passing it around seems to be the only option. And yeah, it appears I was lacking in foresight when I started this and just don't have the time to participate at the moment, so if someone else would like to pick it up I would be much obliged.

I am almost done I just need to finish my labyrinth and my grand fortress will be complete! Also, the castle itself is somewhat boring even if it is extremely opulent.

ricemastah we'll use your map since it has something started. Gread we'll skip you since you were having trouble.
ricemastah could you upload it to the Dwarf Fortress File Depot.
Mech#4 is up. What are you building? Or is this one of those wait and see type of things?

Ok I just needed to know. I'm finishing up my maze right now that connects to the chasm. I should have made the castle a bit more interesting, but if I work on something else I will keep that in mind for next time. I'll try and get it uploaded today.

Edit: Forgot to finish One of the buildings, I'll have the save up by Monday.

Alright here is the link. The front gate of the castle is down so you don't need to go through the maze to get in. If you don't mind can yo0u guys go and make a throwaway adventure and raise the gate? And bridge?

You can mod them to have clothes with a room temperature ignition point so it doesn't hurt them.

ricemastah I tried looking at your fort in adventure mod and it kept freezing on me. So I tried reclaim.
You did remember that items scatter on abandon right? Because the ground was light blue with items. Finally, did you really have to make half a billion in goods?
Title: Re: Truly, they were as gods who made this place

Yea I remembered. I was going to trade it all away to the human before my abandon, but a Titan showed up there and I didn't want to have to kill it. I mean I already slaughtered the goblin sieged that showed up with them. But other then that are you saying it is unusable for adventure mode?

Ok, just updated the first post with what I think? is the most recent information. Sorry it's taken so long; I've been sick recently and things are kind of falling behind.
Speaking of which, I should probably update my community fortress too...

I've downloaded the save file and have started building... something. At the moment it's a big bridge but I tend to be very spontanious with my ideas.

I'd like to have a go at this.
Just one question, how do you change the reactions on existing maps?
Title: Re: Truly, they were as gods who made this place
Post by: ricemastah on April 15, 2008, 02:51:00 pm
Go into the raws, find reaction_standard then go to a reaction and change around the products. It is easiest to go to the Adamantine reaction (at the bottom) and remove the [REAGENT] tags. Then just put in product tags for whatever you want.

EDIT: Also how is your fort coming along mech?

Eh, alright. As I mentioned before, I'm not entirely sure what I'll build but I've got the basics of a bridge spanning a valley at the moment.

Cool, also if anyone wants to see what my map ended up looking like its posted on the DFMA here. Some of the things don't actually exist in the version I uploaded for our game, and there have been some changes in the forts structure, but everything is pretty much the same.

Edit: If you plan to check this map out in adventure mode, don't peek at the labyrinth.

Finished the bridge and have started working on towers that're going to stand at the entrances. It's been going a little slowly since I've had homework to do and such but I'll get there.

Sign me up at some point. Also, tweak is an awesome tool for starting with legendaries. Make a profile that has 15 in all skills and repetetively load that for however many dwarves you start with  :).

Ugh, sorry about that. Have had work and things.

Ok, I've got the bridge done and have towers and a small living space underneath it.

I might upload it now to let others get on with it and return to building it later using reclaim... that is possible right?

I almost forgot about this, actually. I'm making an adventurer fortress, Hellhole the God-forsaken Firey Fortress. Very odd structure. I'm planning on putting a gargantuan magma lake on the lowest levels, and a special present to those who manage to get far enough :3

So how are things going right now? My turn will be starting when you finish.

What do people think I should do?
I was thinking building a port city. Set humans as playable and build boats and everything. Inspired by Goldparch.
I was also considering building giant trees in an elf city to make them more interesting.

Title: Re: Truly, they were as gods who made this place
Post by: ricemastah on June 03, 2008, 08:03:00 pm
Well would setting humans as playable affect the future playability of the save? If it wont make a difference then I say go for. But I think it wont work that easily.

A note for those building underwater things:  Oceans refill on reembark.  Feel free to set an ocean to draining (after building a wall around the map, of course), leave for a few hours at 3 fps, come back and build your fortress on dry land.  Seal off your aquifier drains, and you're done.

Argh, I could do this while school was in session but not when I'm on vacation! What sort of insanity is this?!

I need to cancel my turn  :(

Or at least suspend it.

Turn it over to someone you trust, and provide them with instructions on how to continue your project.  We can't let such minor hindrances as inability to slow down progress!
Title: Re: Truly, they were as gods who made this place

Ok, not feeling bad at all about reviving a dead thread, but did the world get passed to someone else, or am I going to have to single handedly take this project over and see it to completion? Because I can do that. I've got time now and I can do that.
Title: Re: Truly, they were as gods who made this place
Post by: THLawrence on June 13, 2008, 08:23:00 am
Boksi have you sent it over to someone? If not then I should have enough time to work on it today and over the next few days.
If you want to keep the work you've done then abandon, ask to be moved down the list, and reclaim on your turn. But at least send us the save.
