no. if you do that, you will fight under the enemy tower, where you will struggle getting last hits, and may easily die

during the laning phase, you ONLY last hit the creeps, deny your own creeps, and let your support zone out the enemy, maybe go for a kill if you can pull it off. you need the money, badly

well, the really standard set-up at least in pub-games is one hero that is relatively weak early on, but becomes an absolute beast late game, given he gets enough gold, accompanied by a hero that is very strong early game, who can protect him and help him out. Most characters with strong magic nukes are supports, as magic damage does not scale, so it's good early game but bad late game. The farming hero, or carry (because he carries your team to victory) is usualy something that can do very good stuff with right clicks.

I get the basic format but... I'm not used to playing anything but supports apparently.

Also doesn't help that I was looking at the wrong team in Char select.
