DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: New UI is shit.
« on: April 25, 2024, 08:20:37 pm »
I would just like to note, that while toady is bad at making ui, that the game itself is actually incredibly difficult to build ui for.

For one, making the wrong ui element breaks the player's immersion, and this results in way more cuts to seemingly prime features, than you might think.
Another is that interface created needs to serve new players, which means sacrifices must be made.
The interface also needs to work in both ascii and graphical versions of dwarf fortress, adding another wrench into the works.

it's not like the game has an eighteen-year legacy or anything like that...

Though personally I prefer the old style of ui being fire and forget, because it means a faster turnaround time for other features.

Also, who wins in the copyright debate may depend on what the big lobbies think. This could go on for a long time if you have big companies on both sides.

Remember, historically, businesses put forth copyright, to make sure they can make money off what they create.
Also note there is a decent number of non-ai businesses that see some little guy's art and just steal it. So this type of thing being theft sort of has precedent.

The little artists need to pop up and give the courts an opinion that isn't 'this is going to take my job'.

What would be really funny, if it the final decision is that only one company in the data daisy chain has to pay all the artists they stole from.
But only once, covering all companies' use of the dataset.
So little Timmy gets five dollars per art piece and then 500 companies proceed to use his data for ten thousand years.

DF General Discussion / Re: df hack error not a known version?
« on: April 19, 2024, 12:00:01 am »
note that just because dwarf fortress hack has dwarf fortress in the name... it's not an official bay12 product, not made by toady one, and not included in the steam release of Dwarf Fortress.
it's a separate product, like cheat engine, or game genie.

That usually means df hack isn't updated to work with the current Dwarf Fortress release.

you'll have to wait for the people who make it to work on it, release it. and probably a little bit longer to iron out some bugs, unless you don't mind glitches.

Honestly, i don't like elf posting that goes on discord, I really don't want to see a twitter or twitter derivative. I don't know who made that pot, but it sure does get stirred.

General Discussion / Re: if self.isCoder(): post() #Programming Thread
« on: April 09, 2024, 12:33:11 pm »
-at first, developing knowledge of programming is very difficult, because there is so many things to learn.

You can't really cut it down for parts, because you can't even know that you're using the parts correctly without a whole structure.
If you instead try to modify a whole structure, often enough, you have no idea how the rest of it works.
The third way, starting with only simple stuff, means you don't really get used to thinking about a whole big program, leaving you short later.

It's like some sort of incredibly complicated guessing game.

-In the middle, you have to solve problems that are challenging to think about and logic, which is work to many people.

-At last, programming becomes problematic because the simpler repetitive tasks are too boring.

General Discussion / Re: Things that made you go "WTF?" today o_O
« on: March 28, 2024, 07:33:23 pm »
200%. Their objective is not to serve you exactly what you want. Their objective is to keep you scrolling and watching on their platform. Outrage keeps you scrolling. Smut keeps you scrolling. Blocking keeps you scrolling. Making 40% to 60% of the content you see something you're not interested in keeps you scrolling for the next thing you are interested in. And if you explicitly say you don't like something, maybe you'll like the exact opposite if it gets shown to you. All at the end of the day so they can say the platform is active based on user#s and time spent, and advertisers are getting their stuff seen so the ad dollars keep flowing.

I just saw something on this the other day. The metrics work out that the best way to keep people scrolling constantly is to keep the density of content they DO want to see below a certain threshold. Users are subconsciously chasing the dopamine release of a thing they like, but almost as important is the anticipation of that dopamine release. It's the exact same methodology casinos use. Most gambling addicts don't keep coming back for the win, that's not what compels them. It's the anticipation and excitement of the win that keeps them addicted. It's analogous to shopping addiction. Shopping addicts aren't addicted to actually acquiring things; most of the stuff they buy remains in boxes once it's delivered. It's the anticipation of acquisition they're addicted to, the pursuit and choice of buying things despite not actually needing or wanting them.

Social media has just adopted that same method to their platforms.
Is google search the same way?

DF General Discussion / Re: Future of the Fortress
« on: March 21, 2024, 09:46:04 pm »
Historically, you've played roguelike games, where your score was tallied at the end of the game.
Would a numeric representation of score fit in adventure mode?

DF Suggestions / Re: points! Yes, points!
« on: March 21, 2024, 12:15:44 pm »
Score works just fine in nethack.

Score works fine in dungeoneering in runescape too. (comes with a whole cinematic for clearing a dungeon floor that I can't seem to find.)

The game is sorely lacking in juice for adventure mode as it was, though the upcoming music for adventuring might really help.

My biggest fear is that such a feature would open up a space for "point farmers" who speed through/skip the story and RP aspects of adventure mode because their only goal is amassing as big a score as possible.
speeding through stuff in adventure mode means death anyway. that's how the system is balanced.

DF Suggestions / points! Yes, points!
« on: March 20, 2024, 04:19:01 pm »
I have a, point to make:
adventure mode should have a score! killing bronze colossi should give the player points!
people should be able to compare scores between adventurers in their game, and even other player's games.
I know deep inside dwarf fortress somewhere, achievements are saved, but it is important to show the player the fruits of their labor, in number form.

What distinguishes crabapples from apples though?

DF Suggestions / dwarfs carrying regular artifacts
« on: March 18, 2024, 03:55:05 pm »
With the villain plots, they can send agents to steal artifacts.
but what if the player could do the opposite, and say 'this artifact will be carried by a designated dwarf in the fortress'
So if they want the artifact, they have to find the dwarf carrying it!

Also dwarves should have the ability to show off their bling, as a thing which is more common than more than one dwarf every hundred years in a 200 pop fortress. especially if that fortress makes piles of crafts.

it's possible it's a bug with the tavern, but also maybe you don't have anything for them to eat or drink? that stockpile looks empty...
