As I'm a crazy multitasker, I'm usually chatting with friends and listening to Pandora at least. Sometimes I play other games at the same time. Usually Pokemon.

I'm really tempted, though, to just put a massive box of legos next to me and build models of my fortresses as I make them in the game. I'd need a massive box of legos first...

Is it 'many legos' or 'many lego'? I forget.

If you want to be grammatically correct, it's "many Lego." If you want to not sound stupid, it's "many Legos."
I usually refer to it in water-like terms.  "A lot of Lego", "much Lego", "A towering heap of Lego".

And to the OP: Watch anime, listen to music, and chat on IRC.

A mention on the DarkBasic forums, which led me to Boatmurdered, which led me to actually start playing.

Apologies for the delay.  I got the flu and haven't been in the mood for doing much besides watching stupid things on Youtube and coughing spasmodically for the last week. Slowly getting back on track.

And yes, if Starky doesn't manage to achieve immortality before I can off her.

Garth drew back the curtain from the dining room's newly engraved wall revealing a detailed map of the embarkation area.

"This, ladies and gentlemen, is where we currently stand. On the brink of a new era of dwarven construction.  In a few years we will excavate a new lake to fill this valley in the name of dwarvenkind, and in that lake we will build a waterpark whose equal has never been seen."

There was a scattered burst of applause from the crowd of dwarves lounging around the dining hall. Garth sighed.  So few of these dwarves had vision like he did.  Such a disappointment.  He drew a chunk of chalf from his pocket and began to sketch atop the engraving, speaking as he did so.

"Despite the fact that this is to be primarily a recreational facility, it must still be capable of defending itself.  A liquid moat does much to make this goal a viable reality, but I've decided on a few steps to make it more so.  First off, all access to the park will be via glass tunnels which both give a dazzling view of the underwater approach and the opportunity to drown anyone passing through the tunnels at the flip of a switch.

Central to our design will be the island. I intend to preserve a certain amount of soil at surface level while carving away and replacing everything around it. The result will be a natural looking island garden suitable for growing surface and subterranean plants and pasturing livestock. Beneath will be the kitchens and food preparation facilities, as well as the barracks and guest reception area...

Yes, Chimp? You have a comment?"

Chimp spat out the twig he had been picking his teeth with.  "Your island is looking awfully flat.  Couldn't we stick something on there to make it a little more impressive?"

Garth looked at him doubtfully. "You have something in mind?"

"Weeeeellll... I was just thinking, a tower might be good.  Make from wood to really chafe those elves, and then we could make a zoo out of it too."

"That... actually isn't a bad idea." Garth scribbled the idea in. "Now, as I was saying.  North of the Island will be be the meat and booze of our fortress.  The west end will consist of the crystal hall, a submerged, fountained, glassed bubble made suitable for royal dinner parties and the comfort of every common dwarf.  The east end, will, of course, have all the standard features of a first rate Fortress.

Any questions?"

Mirei stood up, giving Garth a run of chills down his spine.  "As a miner, I'm wondering what the plans are for further digging, and where you plan to put the main mineshaft."

"Oh, right, of course.  Currently, I plan to have the main shaft run straight down using the south stairwell of the old fort here.  It will then be connected to the main fort -- like so -- so that our current exterior defenses can be used to contained anything that comes up out of the depths on its way to the new fortress."

Garth looked around, and spotted the hand of an unknown child. "You sir! What is your inquiry?"

"Aren't there supposed to be rides?"

"You are absolutely right, young warrior.  We'll say for now the rides station is... right here.  The tracks will be... somewhere out here. I haven't fully designed them yet.  I received a document on the strange science of hydroplaning with the last caravan, and I've been holding off on finalizing a track design until I've had time to study it fully. Suffice it to say, the rides will be Fun.

Any other questions?"

"Wagons at the gate! Migrants on the hills!" Chimp bellowed as he returned from yet another tree cutting foray.  It was true.  The caravan of merchants was slowly making its way across the river valley.   From overhead, immigrants rounded the end of the drawbridge and paraded wearily into the fortress.  Garth caught one of them by the collar as he passed.

"Hold on, dwarf.  I've got some work for all of you to do.  Head down to the finished goods stockpile and grab all the stone crafts you find there. bring them to the trade depot.  Also, we're out of bins again, so you'll be packing these things one at a time."

Garth turned to his founding seven.  "Starky, go grab a few of those masterwork coffins you made.  Rep, bring down a barrel or two of your finest prepare meals.  PSI, stand around and look menacing while we haggle.  Mion, we need all the good gear we can get here, so bring up your worst practice copper shields."

The dwarves dispersed to gather trade goods while Garth looked through the trader's goods.  The whole process irked him.  Here they were, out on the edge of the world, working for absolutely nothing while doing the work of the king himself, and yet policy dictated that they must be "economically viable" at every stage of growth.  Which meant manufacturing random crap on site to trade instead of working on what they were actually supposed to do.

In the end they ended up trading three masterwork coffins, a couple barrels of plump helmet roast, a wheelbarrow, a few rough copper shields, and great heaps of random stone trinkets to the merchants in exchange for assorted metal bars, some logs, a few bags and ropes, a breeding pair of sheep, a few barrels of ale, assorted meat and plump helmets, and plenty of cloth and leather.

Short update today.

PSI is now dabbling in armorsmithing.

The fortress headcount is now 23, so expect moods any moment now.

By next update I should have the perimeter of the megaproject area channeled out, so I'll post a tentative blueprint at the end for commentary.

Annual Assignment Progress Report - 30th of Limestone, 1033
Garth Pagechapels, Manager

To be returned to the Mountain Home with the fall supply caravan.

------------

Initial site survey:  Terrain appears to be mostly comprised of clay and silt atop slate, with a wide river to the west and south, and low hills rising in the northeast.  Minerals thus far have revealed abundant tetrahedrite, but a painful lack of fossil fuels.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Wildlife is abundant and large but mostly passive.

The exception seems to be the honey badgers.  Upon arrival at the site we were immediately attacked by one of the creatures, which PSI rapidly dispatched by punching its ribs through its heart.

We set up base camp and I assisted Mion in smelting our hematite ore into iron and steel bars.  Mirei was equipped with an iron pick, and PSI with steel axe, helm, and a full set of iron mail armour.  Due to the shortage of fossil fuels we were forced to rely on charcoal obtained from the forest.  Fortunately, Chimp is excellently efficient with his copper axe and kept us in good supply.  Rep built a a set of makeshift kitchens and a still and turned our remaining food supplies into lavish meals and drinks, seasoned with PSI's honey badger and whatever edible-looking plants he could find in the area.

By mid spring we were prepared to start excavation on our fortress, and Mirei struck the earth.  Starky converted the resulting stone into blocks, furniture and doors.

Most of the summer passed uneventfully, save for the expected wave of additional migrants that appeared and lounged around in the half-excavated dining room like they owned the place until I threatened to excavate them unless they started being useful.  Most were tasked with aiding mining, while a few who has rudimentary combat skills were recruited to our fledgling military to give PSI someone to beat on.

It is now autumn, and we have completed the following infrastructure to support the many laborers I expect to aid in the waterpark's construction:

Traditional entrance airlock system, with togglable winding path:

Rep's farms:

The hall of metalworking (and dining room):

And the main floor:

Note: unconscious wild rhinoceros do not normally occupy the main hallway.  An investigation into the presence of this specimen is ongoing.

All right.  A couple questions, and a note that we're open to claiming migrants.

PSI is currently a peasant, would you like her to do some work in an area (armoursmithing?) so if a mood strikes her she won't be crafting some useless toy?

How do you all feel about danger rooms/traps, etc?  I've never built a danger room before, and I'm okay with traps, I just generally limit myself to one weapon per weapon trap.

Note: we're open to claiming migrants.

Garth surveyed his motley expedition team.  He had seen worse.  On their way to the outfitting warehouses they had passed Team Rocket, an expedition crew with the dubious task of building a steam-rocket to plumb the depths of the magma sea, starting from a drop into a nearby volcano.  Their leader, a white-bearded 'physicist' was wailing and desperately trying to explain to the guards pushing him along that "Steam can't be pressurized, you fools."

All the supplies were gathered, the wagons were packed and loaded, and the Splashfountains crew has attained the traditional seven dwarves.  Garth put tick marks next to names as he scanned down his checklist.

There was himself, of course: excellent mechanic and fabulous leader of dwarves.  Future dwarf of renown, fame, and wealth.

Next was... PeeSee? Psy? Si?  PSI.  Combat specialist who claimed some skill with an axe and armour.  She hadn't said a word outside of a single "Yes sir." when asked to sign her name on the expedition mandate form.  She stood in a distant corner now, going through a complex series of drills with a training axe.

Third was Mirei.  Miner and engraver.  Also not much of a talker.  She seemed like a good dwarf, helping the cook stack his many barrels of food and picking through the stockpile of ores to bring only the ones with the highest yield, and yet Garth couldn't shake the feeling that there was something incredibly off about her entire presence.

Fourth was Starky.  Mason and stonecrafter.  A raving lunatic if ever Garth saw one.  Starky bore a series of bizarre bruises all over her body and carried a wooden training sword which she would alternately twirl theatrically and recklessly hit herself with.  At the moment she was lying on the floor and repeatedly dropping a small rock onto her face in what was apparently a painfully ineffective attempt at self termination.

Fifth was Rep.  Stable, good natured, and a fairly good brewer, farmer, and cook.   He sat on top of an impressive pile of barrels full of supplies for the journey and working out menus on a wax tablet.

Sixth was Chimp.  Proficient carpenter and woodcutter. An odd fellow with a permanent grin and a ready joke for every occasion. He was crouched over a bundle of suprisingly primitive tools, meticulously honing the edge of each battered and worn piece.

And finally, Mion.  An enigmatic weapon and armor smith with a mischievous glint in her eye and tough set to her jaw.

"Excellent." Garth said, bounding to the top of the most heavily loaded wagon.  He stomped on a small mechanism, releasing a plume of sparks and red smoke that towered behind him.

"Ladies and Gentledwarves!  Tonight we ride for Splashfountains!  Glory and fame awaits!" he bellowed.

Prisoners generally lose all their aggressive behavior and revert to just trying to constantly flee the map.

All right.  Assuming we get a good smith soon, I'll fill both your requests by bringing iron ore and fuel and having the pick forged on site. Also, I can throw in a few pieces of flux so PSI can start right off with a steel weapon and helm.

The world is old and at relative peace.  Dwarves, tiring of their usual sport of dunking elves in magma and committing genocide against the legions of hell, lounge in their mountain halls.

"Ah shay."  said the king, spraying ☼plump helmet roast☼ across his royal apartment, "What we need is a waterpark."

"A what, sire?" Cog Battlehammer, royal guard and unfortunate recipient of the old king's unhinged attention asked, eyebrow only slightly raised.

"A waterpark.  I've always loved that little fountain in the dining room.  But I was thinking. What if we had, like, an ENTIRE fortress that was one big fountain?  Lovely mists everywhere.  Minecarts rides.  Waterfalls.  A moat full of alligators.  It would be WICKED DWARVEN."

"I-I see. It would, sire."  Cog stammered.

"The WICKEDEST fortress ever. No, wait.  It has to be fortress that's a fountain inside a fortress that's totally underwater. Awesome. I can't wait for it to be finished." The king leaned back, his hands outstretched in a mirrored pair of L's as if framing the imaginary scene.

"When was it started, sire?"

The king's eyes snapped back into focus as he glared at the hapless guard.

"It starts now, by my beard.  The expedition starts tomorrow morning.  I'm putting you in charge."

"M-me?" Cog's mind raced.  Banished to some forsaken expeditionary outpost.  Never eating in a real legendary dining room again.  Probably eaten by giant alligators within the year.  Forced to perform actual manual lab--

"Yes.  Find a suitable expedition leader and gather supplies.  Here is a seal of authority.  I expect a full report the moment they've departed."

"Yes, your Majesty. At once. Sire."  Cog saluted sharply and turned to the stairwell, deeply relieved to pass on the misfortune to the first expendable dwarves he caught sight of.

The king let out a happy sigh as the guard disappeared.  He smiled and hummed quietly to himself, stirring his keg of rum absentmindedly with a stubby finger.  This was totally his best idea since the semi-automatic wolverine cannon.

Welcome to Splashfountains expedition staging grounds.  Vanilla DF, except for some minor modding to make all civilizations hostile.  We are currently looking to recruit:

1 Miner
1 Carpenter
1 Mason
1 Farmer
1 Weapon/Armorsmith
1 Combat Specialist

Skill points are yours to distribute as you see fit, so long as you can effectively fill out your chosen role. I'll do my best to fill gender requests, but more advanced personality profiling is generally beyond my patience.  I'll just ignore the in-game description and write them as requested.  You can also ask to bring some items relevant to your profession or hobbies and I'll see what I can do to fit them in.

Dwarves outside of the starting seven will initially be the most useful in mining, mechanics, masonry, and/or military, so keep that in mind for requests.

---------------

I'm grabbing the first mechanic for myself.

'Garth'
Male Dwarf
Proficient Mechanic
Novice Building Designer
Novice Record Keeper
Novice Appraiser
Novice Organizer
Novice Judge of Intent

Items requested: 100 bags of sand.  For the... uh... beach.
Personality: Brilliant, conceited, theatrical, unhinged, and paranoid.
Personal goals: Create a ☼submarine fortress☼, become a living legend.
Bio: A mid-level mechanic working special effects in the royal theatre, Garth jumped at the chance to immortalize his name with a potential wonder of the world.

« on: December 28, 2012, 03:17:43 pm »
If you only specify that questions are to be asked, then will anyone answer any of the questions?
Apparently, yes.

11
I'd say aim to open up the cavern layers and attract some forgotten beasts.  And yes, post some pictures along with the journal entries.

12
Okay, I've looked over the list.  Asmel Tosidberdan 'Asmel Armorwalk' looks like a good candidate for Doktorship.

13
Nah, I'm good with just having a secondary class medical dwarf.  Since that makes the Doktor a little a more expendable, could he be uniformed with armor and allowed to run into combat to recover wounded?

I'll take a look at the list of dwarves as soon as you get it re-posted.  The link to the gallery seems to be dead right now.

14
Ooh.  Can I have a dwarf named "Doktor" with medical skills and mechanics enabled?  He (or she) needs an antisocial personality and wants a bedroom protected by a trap-filled maze.

Personal design philosophy of fortress security: "It's okay if they get in, they'll never get out alive."  As such, he/she'd like to place traps in unlikely and questionable locations whenever he/she can get away with it.

Just died a horrible bolt-riddled death in a necromancer tower after my drinking of vampire blood apparently did absolutely nothing to make me an acceptable member of the undead.
