With the smithy up and running we'll be able to do some much needed blacksmithing. We can't get the pick quite yet, since our smith is only level one and we have no iron bars, but we can make a nice weapon upgrade for our soldier once we have some bronze bars made.
Speaking of which, Dorsidwarf, do you want to go to Archer or Knight after Footman? Knight will take a bit, since we need steel armor to make it worthwhile. Archer should be quicker and generally less painful in a fight, but not as heroic. Up to you. I'm sure we'll get more soldiers to help you out soon.

Right now I'm pondering setting up guard towers leading down the mountain into the valley. Something to let us leave our little ledge without opening up the fortress to too much danger. Still, there is stuff down there that could let us start making medicine and cloth, both things we'll need soon. Eventually our farms can do that, but I don't recall how high level our farmer needs to be for that. And she's still only level 1.
We could also get another guard tower set up off to the side near the farms to help intercept enemies before they reach us. Although that would be more useful one we've got more soldiers. Ideally I'd like to have an archer on each side with a few footmen/knights as roving protection.

Final tally for the day. We're all alive, but things could be better. For one thing, about half the town is hurt and unhappy. We'll need to keep at least a few of the soldiers on duty at least until Dorsi and Mushroom have most of their health back. I think our latest settler can stay a soldier. Those stats are just too good to pass up.
I put our Trapper back to her old job so we have plenty of pelts to turn into leather later. I think Eyla will move to being our Weaver once we don't need her on soldier duty. Her Spirit is just too low to make a good soldier.
Also, our Miner seems to have lost his job. Maybe the mod needs to be updated. Oh, well, not really a problem. I want to build some walls on our flanks anyway. The fewer spots monsters can show up (and our soldiers silently run off to fight) the better.

Yeah. That was brutal. I am apparently not so great at this game on hard mode.
On the upside, I now know to keep a large stockpile of basic wooden sword and shields so we can have a militia rise up as needed. And we may want to institute a mandatory military rotation to keep all of the crafters and whatnot training up a bit. That could have been much easier if we'd have all those swords fighting at the start.
But we did survive, somehow. We'll have to see if we can keep that going.
Mushroom is the only PC survivor of the massacre. For those that lost your settler, feel free to claim a new one if you so desire.
