Title: Stonehearth community settlement - Mountainhome
Post by: Mephansteras on April 16, 2018, 08:36:21 pm
(https://www.stonehearth.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/sh_logo1.png)

For those of you who don't know it, Stonehearth is a graphical DF-like game. You start with 7 settlers and head off to build a new settlement in the wilderness. It's a bit more gamey & cutesy than DF rather than simulation focused, but it's fun. And while it is still in Alpha (and therefore unfinished and buggy) it is far enough along to actually be a game at this point.

So I decided I'd see if I could get a little settlement going with you guys. I'll run it like a normal DF settlement game where you guys can claim people and help make some decisions about the settlement and what we should be doing.

To start off we need to decide some basic things:

What will we name our settlement?

What difficulty will we play on? (Pleaceful (no monsters), Normal (Monsters grow stronger as the game goes on), Hard (Stronger monsters from the outset and getting harder)

What kind of starting gear do we want? (Extra food, Extra starting tools, Extra money)

What kind of settlement do we want? (Happy village? Merchant village? Military Outpost?)

We'll start with 7 settlers and will get more as the settlement has more food and wealth available. Much fewer than DF, but we'll still end up with a few dozen as time goes on.

The first 7 we can change look and gender, the later ones we just change name and profession.

To claim one, post the following:

Name
Sex
Preferred Profession (https://stonehearth.gamepedia.com/Classes)
Basic look (Haircolor and style, skin tone) - First 7 only.

Cool. Think I'll get started on this tomorrow evening, in case anyone else wants to chime in or claim a settler. After that we'll just go with what we have and if anyone else wants to claim people later they can.

And so it begins. Since choppy is the only vote, we're going full dwarf on this one!

Full disclaimer, I haven't ever tried Hard before so...we might all die.

Do you guys have any requests? Ideas on how we should build out our fortress?

Right now I'm pondering setting up guard towers leading down the mountain into the valley. Something to let us leave our little ledge without opening up the fortress to too much danger. Still, there is stuff down there that could let us start making medicine and cloth, both things we'll need soon. Eventually our farms can do that, but I don't recall how high level our farmer needs to be for that. And she's still only level 1.

We could also get another guard tower set up off to the side near the farms to help intercept enemies before they reach us. Although that would be more useful one we've got more soldiers. Ideally I'd like to have an archer on each side with a few footmen/knights as roving protection.

I don't know why but that new settler Yuffa Mushroom Belltower tugs at me . . . I do like the idea of being an archer, one day. (Second choice is shepherd, which to judge by the wiki she'd also be good at but would be farther in the future.)

I think the campfire should remain outdoors to prevent cave adaptation. :P  Seriously, though, this started as a "Dwarf" run but my own DF style includes quite a few surface features, insofar as I can establish a safe perimeter. The campfire outside is a like a beacon to weary travelers, "You are not alone this wild land! Welcome, and enjoy our Mountainhome!"

I'd like the next male migrant you get, Meph.  Shove him into the Blacksmith career and make all the stuff, for the mountain-home and for sale.
     Name him Urist McKaos.

     Thanx.

Oh noo, poor Dorsi getting beaten around!

Clearly the poor soldier simply can’t fight worth a darn without the rune blade she’s named for ;p
Knight would be a cool specialisation for her but go with whatever the colony needs are when you get there

Got a nice large update for you. Would have been up yesterday, but I couldn't connect to the forums.

We're in pretty good shape at the moment. Our biggest limitation is people to actually put into all the classes.

For the next session I think I will focus on getting the interior of the fortress finished up. We have more rooms to make and furnish, and we'll need to get our miner upgraded to his official Profession.

Any suggestions or requests other than that?

I've never played Stonehearth, so I was real worried when I saw dorsi on the ground, ahah!

I imagine that when she's hurt bad from now on, the other guard will lock her in the tower so she cant sneak off and pick fights with the wildlife.

Hehe. Yeah, I'm not 100% sure on how it works but I think we have a reasonable amount of time to rescue a downed person before they die. Death is very possible, though, especially if things start to go wrong and we end up with lots of people knocked out at once. At least based on what I've read.

Dorsi feels like she’s a waste of space when she spends ages lying in bed recuperating, so she has to fight everything to prove herself, but she gets beaten up in the process and has to spend ages in bed recuperating. A vicious cycle of broken noses.

Can we make metal gates/fences just to make it even more difficult for the mobs to get in, or at least have it take longer?
I guess it might be more related to how much ore we have and the types of defences we can make from it.
Title: Re: Stonehearth community settlement - Mountainhome
Post by: Mephansteras on May 11, 2018, 06:49:41 pm
Hmm, I don't recall if there are. I'll have to check.

My current plan is to put up some solid walls on both sides of us so that enemies have to go at the gateway tower to get to us at all. We'll see how that works.

I’ve never played stone hearth, but is it possible to restrict your colonists to areas? If so that might help the wildlife-bashing issue with the soldiers

The engineer can make lockable doors, so that might work. We need to actually get an engineer first. Thinking of it, that class may be the one that makes metal fences and whatnot. We'll have to see.

I see that the Engineer makes lockable metal doors, maybe that will slow mobs down, or even keep them out for good.  We need time to heal.

I wanna have a bow. :) Maybe leave Elya as a Footman a little longer, then if the archer needs more HP you can switch their roles so the arrow launching is still covered?

It probably all depends on the foes. So far they seem to be melee types and the archer shouldn't need quite as much HP. No idea what the future will bring.

Things are going pretty well, all told.

Dorsidwarf, your call on when you want to move over to a Knight. You'll do less damage but will be much better at defense and drawing aggro from the monsters. You'll lose the fancy mace, I think, but should be able to use a snazzy sword. At least once you level up a bit.

Cool ... so I take it the hood is part of the Archer uniform?
I'm gonna call myself a Ranger, then.
Be all barely talking and scary intense scowls.

Mushroom: Down, now! Did you hear that?
Civilian: I didn't hear anything.
Mushroom (grimace): Exactly.

Can we mine out some trenches in front of the wall to slow the monsters down even further?
If we build concentric rings of walls around the Mountainhome, are there reinforced gates we can install in the walls?
Lastly, everyone starts as a miner for two or three levels just for the hit points....totally dwarfy.
Title: Re: Stonehearth community settlement - Mountainhome
Post by: Mephansteras on May 18, 2018, 06:04:43 pm
We can totally mine trenches, yeah. I'll have to see about doing that in the future. Once the current mining orders are done, though.

Proper gates aren't in yet, though we can do reinforced double-doors, or later on Iron doors once we have an Engineer.

That would be pretty dwarfy, I agree.

Code: [Select]
     1. Do trees regrow?
   If yes, then;
     2. How long does it take?
     3. Any chance of walling of a tree farming plantation?

Post by: Mephansteras on May 19, 2018, 01:41:46 am
They sometimes drop seeds. Often enough that we've been doing a fair amount of replanting and harvesting already.

Not sure how long, but a few days for a decent size tree.

Sappho is also probably high enough level to just farm them on her own now. At a certain point you can just plant them in fields, I think.

Based on what your building design tools look like I'm on a different version but a max level farmer can plant trees. Probably the same for you.

All our friends. :(

I, Mushroom, vow to avenge ye! >:(

Except I have no idea how.  :-[

Did we at least salvage most of the equipment?
Since it looks like food and wealth are going to be plenty with our population so low, I think we should focus on (re-?) building the walls/gates and training a new healer.

Mushroom may need to go back to Footman, since she's the most experienced fighter left, I think? Her HP seems a bit low for the front lines but the extra levels could be invaluable to hold a gate.
Title: Re: Stonehearth community settlement - Mountainhome
Post by: Mephansteras on May 31, 2018, 09:40:31 am
I don't think we lost any equipment, no.

Hard to say. I think Archer generally out-damages the other classes, so while Mushroom is less tanky she's killing stuff faster. Your call, but I'm inclined to leave her as is for now.
Title: Re: Stonehearth community settlement - Mountainhome
Post by: mightymushroom on May 31, 2018, 11:00:07 am
Well then I guess not. I'm of the opinion that the best defense is a stout wall, very closely followed by good DPS.
If Mushroom provides the latter, I can let someone else be the meat shield.

I’m not really sure what happened in that fight. Jump-cutting straight from “everyone levelled up!” To “everyone died” meant it took me quite a while to even notice I was dead.

Also why were the wolves so incredibly dangerous and how did the entire enemy force end up on the inside of all our defenses
Title: Re: Stonehearth community settlement - Mountainhome
Post by: Mephansteras on May 31, 2018, 09:46:16 pm
Sorry, it can be a bit tricky to make screenshots make sense.

Basically what happened, is that as part of building the scaffolding to make the wall our people decided to put ladders all the way up to the clifftop. This let the monsters climb down and use our scaffolding to climb over the wall.

The wolves were a problem not because they were super nasty (though they were no pushovers) but because they were fast and everyone was dealing with the big guy. So while we wailed on him and chased him around, the wolves were biting everyone. We took a ton of damage from them even as we were winning against the big guy. And the wolves could easily chase down and maul people running away from them because they were so fast, which made it really hard for us to rescue anyone.

The *everyone leveled* thing happened when we killed the big guy. But shortly after that the people who were taken down early in the fight started dying because they hadn't been rescued.

Yeah, sorry, been super busy and haven't fired this up in a bit.

I also saw an update from them yesterday that they are going to be moving from Alpha to Beta soon and will not guarantee backwards save compatibility. So I'll try to get in at least another update or two before that happens. But we may have to start over with a new fort sometime soon regardless of how well we are doing.

And on that generally cheery note, that fort is done. The beta patch has dropped which is supposed to break a number of things.

I'm thinking about starting up a new one in a few weeks once they iron out the inevitable bugs.

Are people interested in me doing another community settlement?

Ah, does this mean we beta backers will finally be able to give the game a whirl as well?  Your thread piqued my interest in the game, which I had otherwise forgotten I even backed back in the day. :3

I'd be quietly interested in another thread.  It looks like you've been having a lot of !!FUN!!, after all.
