DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What Is Your Preferred Endgame Condition?
« on: October 16, 2012, 11:22:16 am »
I voted for "Clowns" because it is the most end-game content you can arbitrarily trigger to "win". Allow me to explain:

1 - FPS death isn't an intended feature and is by far one of the most subjective aspects in the game. It can wildly range depending on your computer's specifications, so this means you can have a FPS death with 50 dwarves or play normally with 200. You can also have FPS death because of a pathfinding bug or game programming issues (e.g. the game handling data the hardest way possible making it consume an unecessary amount of memory). So FPS death should be out of the table, and I hardly believe lots of people consider it to be "win". They usually abandon because they get pissed about not being able to do anything, or they force a "fun" situation.

2/3 - Losing spectacularly is considered "fun" and win by most people. Actually, this might be my personal favorite. Losing because of a legendary megabeast that was sleeping for years under your fort until you dig it up is as satisfying as it gets. By a certain point of view, this is also the only way of "winning" with the first option, because you made your fort last so much long that it will have to be spectacular to make your fort end. It can be frustrating if you were really engaged into a personal megaproject and it ended up making you lose your fort and progress.

4 - These are extremely fun but it usually is the most frustrating way to lose. Because it is so "easy" to set up defenses (you could literally just close up your fort, tell the invaders to fuck off and live without even needing to open it up), there are literally infinite ways of dealing with these. It is much more satisfying to release a sea of magma into the invaders than losing to them in a "fair" fight.

5 - Yeah that's win, but your fortress won't die. After it you'll end up doing something else or relinquishing your fortress anyway, in which case you'll be missing the whole point of the game.

By point of the game I obviously mean making epic (and !!EPIC!!) stuff and bragging about it on the forums more than you would if you had 100000 gamerscore on LIVE. Also having infinite times more recognition for it, and eventually becoming a legend to never be forgotten by the community.

You just came back and embarked in an evil biome?

Armok loves you and welcome back to Dwarf Fortress.

If you're bothered by that as an author, why not just bring over the information yourself, if it still is in fact accurate.

This statement sumed it up.
This is an open forum for any user that wants to join, for whatever reasons, and we are free to express ourselves. However, Richards, even though I (kind of) understand your indignation, it does not justify calling Quietust, one of our most important and contributing members ever, a "problem" and demanding anything.

Yes, the wiki is as much ours and Quietust's as it is of the authors, like you said. Then you're not in position to demand.

The wiki is not a simple "complement" to the game, like most wikis. People don't go there to search for quests or whatever. They go there to literally learn how to play, because this game is so complex that it is borderline impossible to be properly played without common shared knowledge, may it be personally inbetween players (which is more than often inaccurate) or through the wiki. The wiki should be as trustworthy as possible.

I'm a D for Dwarf fan myself, and have read most of these articles. I found them extremely amusing and entertaining, even the ones that contained true information amongst jokes and such. But when I was playing seriously, interested in learning more, I mostly skipped these articles. Although most are funny and very well written, they end up not having as much credibility, which is an important point in any wiki (especially when you strongly rely on it's content).

Even today, with all the "scrapped" content you mentioned, there are still inaccurate articles and information spread by people as truth because they see it on the wiki. If one reads a wiki article, he will very likely believe it without questioning, because he'll probably consider it to be tested before getting on the wiki. Most people that are looking for funny DF-related content come to the forums in the first place, the wiki is meant to be a "serious" (as it gets) place with reliable information.

Yes it is not fully updated to the current version. It is an important todo for the wiki, this article is pretty important.

DF General Discussion / Re: I absolutely love the idea of DF

Give it a time. If it doesn't help, use stonesense.
Stonesense's graphics reminds me of Tactics Ogre for the SNES.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Window movement on each start
« on: September 28, 2012, 07:12:03 am »
This is very likely a problem with your Operational System.
What OS do you use? 50px down every time you RUN the game or minimize it and restore?

If the answers are: Windows and run, I seriously recommend you to get over it, because windows problems are a pain.

Alternatively, you can backup your important things and download a new client. If this doesn't solve, it's clearly a problem with your operational system.

DF Suggestions / Re: Adding Multiplayer/LAN to Dwarf Fortress
« on: September 26, 2012, 08:35:25 pm »
There won't be multiplayer DF.

This has numberous reasons. DF's programming isn't the world's 8th wonder. He is a genius and probably ridiculously good at math, but he admitted that he is an average programmer. It has a lot of flaws that could be solved, but we all know too that Toady works by himself, not even his brother has access to the source. It is his life project and he said he plans to work on it for at least 10 more years, and the source will only be released upon the event of his death. So he won't be getting any help soon.
Afaik, Toady makes his living from DF, and that's the reason he won't release it. We all know that, should he at least tried to implement a kind of multiplayer, even the most vague resemblance of it (like highscores or even spectate only with a chat, like some rogulikes do, i.e. http://tiles.crawl.develz.org) it would raise, probably double the amount of donations. When Toady released Adventure Mode donations doubled, and they never went down again. DF became much more popular and has a kind of religious cult.

tl;dr he can't do multiplayer by himself without crucial losses, that's the reason he wont. And yes the community doesn't mean much, it's all up to ONE single person and he said he won't, so it's not a thread that is changing his mind, not the 100 that has been made and the 1000 to come.

Just so you know, danger rooms are an exploit

Toady said it himself.

DF General Discussion / Re: Do you play DF at work?
« on: September 26, 2012, 10:13:55 am »
I wish. But I know that if I really could do it, I wouldn't work at all! LOL
It was hard enough to work when everything was allowed. At first, I used to irc and forum-play a little. Now IT are stalking me and they even blocked b12 forums along with obvious blocks, like youtube and facebook and most game-related websites as of now (I think they unblock it all for the breaks). I've downloaded it and read a bit of legends but I could't actually play it. But then, my work involves a lot of people and they watch my screen all the time (probably the reason why b12 forums just got blocked) so I won't screw with it. >:

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Under attack!
« on: September 25, 2012, 02:58:42 pm »
And just when I thought that the were-guy went away without killing anyone and gave me more
time for defense, an ambush!.

Report: 21 dwarves killed (33% of the whole population).

Including 7 soldiers (of course, they ended engaging the enemy without armor nor weapons despite being
just there, four blocks away).

Should I just start over again? (actually that would be the 4th fortress in that world (though 2 of them were reclaims of the first one)

On the other side, 3 killed. (2 goblin maceman, 1 goblin hammerman)

But somehow I think the enemy loses are more because some hunters came... because my army you know... they went pig to the slaughter.

If you're still having fun keep going; if not quit or savescum -- Losing may be fun, unless it ISN'T

This advice was too user-friendly. As we all know, neither DF or b12f are meant to be friendly.
Thus, our DIG system has been activated (Dwarven Interaction Generator).

####THIS MESSAGE HAS BEEN GENERATED BY ARMOK AUTO-REPLY SERVICE. PLEASE, TAKE IT INTO CONSIDERATION OR DIE IN A FIRE####

Don't abandon it. Your fortress is fully functional if you have 1 (one) or more safe, sound (not necessarily) and sane dorf. Armok reminds you that, despite being a hard deed at betimes, the knowledge and experienced attained from such act will be completely worth your while.

Should your population drop below the above number, please, abandon your current fortress and restart.

Thanks for using the Blood God services!

DF General Discussion / Re: What is YOUR most wanted feature?
« on: September 25, 2012, 02:47:27 pm »
There are real, legitimate glitches within DF (including exploits, such as danger rooms and "coin multiplying") that should be taken care before.
Well, but since I don't use coins and don't build danger rooms because I dislike exploiting, I don't care about those.
But I agree they are serious exploits that should be fixed as soon as possible.

It's not done with coins only, they're just the most effective. You get roughly 50%+ (150% metal back total) metal from melting coins than you used for making them. Including candy (blue metal).
I'm such a noob that I never found candy and made only about 10 iron weapons in 5 or 6 forts I've lost.  :P

Some fucking proper AI to dwarves run to the secure area when chased by a goblin army.
Everytime, EVERYTIME there's an ambush, about 10 dwarves will start running towards the enemy army to haul a sock I forgot to forbid and then when the army chases them, the dwarves just run around like headless chickens. And when I order a squad to attack and then cancel because I notice they're just too weak, the bastards will keep running to a random location with "no job" status.
This is the only frustration I'm having with Dwarf Fortress.

Well, I grant, the military system doesn't work nearly well, but... If you look from a point of view, nothing on DF does. Nothing is really "exact" or precise at DF. You send orders and stuff and your dwarves do when they will or have the time. It's not like strategy games where you click or designate an order and either your troops do it at once or pop a message error that they couldn't do "X" because they are doing "Y". DF is much more complicated. Imagine it as a real fortress, and you're a single dwarf. You're hauling stockpiles and then you notice you're being ambushed. They take the same time (arguably more) than you to realize that. Now imagine you're a soldier this time, and received an order to attack the enemy. In the MIDDLE of the battle, you receive an order to withdraw. It won't go as expected.

There are real, legitimate glitches within DF (including exploits, such as danger rooms and "coin multiplying") that should be taken care before.
