I wonder if its possible to get powerful enough to beat those char guys...If you hit first with a shotgun, they'll usually go down in one shot.

I always end up finding them roaming the streets.
How do you find the grocery stores?
All I get is apartments and stuff, and hardly any food.
It's an interesting game but it would be nice if there was a goal to work towards beside generally surviving, escape, creating a safezone, destroying a big bad, etc.
But every part of my city ends up being business.I always end up finding them roaming the streets.

Look in shopping districts, like described in the first post.
So I'm currently a black guy running for my life. I had an ally, but he's gone now. I can't seem to find any stores, though.I'm currently a girl with kung-fu skills, killing undead left and right. :D
and I can't find the save/exit button...Shift+K shows all controls and you can change them.
Kung-fu girl died. 3 zombies with 3-red-bars each jumped at her. It was nice having agility 3, but I guess that doesn't make you all powerful. As I said, I find "firearms" to be the most useful skill.
:'(

It was nice having agility 3, but I guess that doesn't make you all powerful. The number of bars is their aggression level, not difficulty. 1 bar means they haven't noticed you(or are attacking someone else), 2 means their "tracking" you, 3 means their coming after you.
:'(
Small update:Too bad that update isn't on megaupload.
alpha 2.1 = less annoyance
For sure I added new features in alpha 2.1.
But more importantly for the players it will be much less annoying to play:
Use the mouse to look at the map and handle items, no more look/inventory modes.
You can disable the delay in animations.
You can control the amount of district simulation, from 0% to 100%, and it is set to very low by default - much less waiting when changing districts.
The game won't exit when you die anymore, just go back to the main menu.
Long Wait command, wait for 1 hour - no more spamming "Wait", also the long wait command interrupts when something important happens.
Fixed all reported bugs (and few more).
I'd like to see picking a name and sprite implemented soon, as well. It hurts my immersion a bit to be playing as a black guy named Ulrich Smith, or a guy with giant frizzy pink hair named Carl. I'd like to be me, you know?Well based on my french skill, and unknowning use of a site I never seen before.
Also, I can't find the update. Where eez eet?
Also, do NPCs with Leadership recruit other NPCs?Yes.
To speak truthfully the NPC AI is really dumb. Also, do NPCs with Leadership recruit other NPCs?Yes.
NPC AI r smrt. Wish I could tell em to run away or sleep somewhere else...

Yeah, but that's not fun. You'l have to starve to death at some point.
I've never understood when people try their hardest to figure out ways to make a game boring and impossible to lose.
QWESystem Shock is the best series ever.
ASD = Numpad replacement
ZXC
RTY
FGH = Everything else replacement
VBN
I do that in some games.
Edit: If you notice, that's System Shock's setting somewhat. >.>
When I run it, I just get a massive red X and then a fatal exception. I was told it was because i'm on Vista...Not to be a dick, but get XP or win7?
Halp?
Few things
(1) Make sure you're running it as an administrator
(2) Uninstall, then reinstall it.
(3) The error you're seeing happens to me quite a bit, ya wanna know what it's called? You probably know, but it's a memory leak! Oh the fun! Beyond steps 1 & 2, I can't really halp ya. Sorry <Insert sadface here>
Is there any way to push something through an open door?Kick the door down. You'll lose the door, but you'll get a plank for it. And if you're pushing stuff around, you can just put something where the door used to be.
download pulled out for a few minutes, hot fixing an annoying keyboard bug
I can imagine the city deteriorating over-time and becoming overrun, causing you to retreat to the outskirts and build a base, and farm. All the while taking out the usual mob of zombies. Occasionally you'd have to go into the city and search for rubble and scrap that will supply your manufacturing. You made me order both Max Brooks's books from amazon with this post. Though by the sound of that, I'll thoroughly enjoy them and I decided to order Whispered Worlds anyway, so I guess saved on postage.
It sounds like World War Z, and I LOVE that book.
What skill should I choose when starting a new character. Excluding random.
x2, I can give you a quick rundown.Medic is best paired with Tough, unless you plan on finding a lot of Green Pills(which makes it quite useful, assuming it works on pills). Medkits restore a base of 5HP, half of your starting max. The at less than 5HP, the extra missing point or two isn't going to kill you*.
Agile-Good for if you want to be able to defend yourself against skeletons.
Firearms- Not so much a good skill unless you can find lots of guns.
Medic- Makes those little bandages you find much more effective.
High Stam- Allows you to run away longer and break more furniture and stuff at a time.
Leadership-Utterly useless at this point, it seems. They're just meatbags.
Carpentry- Helps when you have tons of planks and have a powerful zombie after you. Best way is to close door/window and then barricade it. It holds them off longer than the usual plank'n'run.
Hauler- Allows you to keep one extra item, which is good. Keeps you from making that frustrating choice--Weapon or food?
The rest are more late-game, when you know your surroundings.
I know it's a pipe dream, but an online version of this would be incredible. Fifteen or twenty (or more?) players on a server, scattered throughout the city. Find cell phones and coordinate, try to meet each other somewhere. Get turned into a zombie and hunt your companions.Urban Dead/Quarantine 2019?

Basically the same experience you just described.
Anyways, this game is pretty fun, except it seems like Zombie Masters spawn too much/too early? Like, I often leave the first building and find one jumping over cars at me :(

Disciples are BEAST.
One hit full health with char armor on, and unloading shotgun blasts.
My current run went a bit awry.
I managed to find a Char building that was broken into. I found tons of dead CHAR guards, from disciples I'm guessing. There were medkits everywhere. I decided I would stockpile these medkits into a nearby safehouse. (I tried to make a safe-house in every district I visited.) It didn't go over that well. The 2nd run I had to escape from a zombie master and his mob, and got lost. I couldn't find my way back, and then midnight hit. I went into a house and blocked it off with furniture. Zombies busted through while I shot with my crossbow. I took down 5 zombies before they came in. I was low health, close to my last medkit. I go to replace the furniture and sleep. I wake up in the morning, 6 o'clock. Then, I find out I was just a couple tiles west of the safehouse I was going to use.
I really need my minimap fixed. :'(
The one that increases your Max Sleep is somewhat useless, since it just means you have to sleep longer to fill it up as well.
The hat ones are zombie masters. I would give up the other bonuses for light sleeper if it woke you up when a hostile came within a certain distance.
We don't want to lose our three week survivor because a zombie decided to claw its way through our barricades with no provocation, do we?
We don't want to lose our three week survivor because a zombie decided to claw its way through our barricades with no provocation, do we?
Yes we do!!! ...sometimes you don't do anything wrong and yet shit happens. Tantrum spirals aren't fair eather but we still love them! :)
I once had 3 layers of shelf+full caded shop doors. While I was asleep a disiple broke ALL OF IT and killed me. Difficultcy is one thing, but THAT is another story(how the hell did that NOT wake me up?)
Well, RS crashed earlier today, I've destroyed every trace of it from my system and tried to reinstall it, but whenever I try it says the application could not be launched. Any ideas?

I've destroyed every trace of it from my systemThis means Add&Remove programs too
IIRC, Beds don't do anything, do they? I always sleep on the ground...
The most annoying thing about this game is when civilians steal your food and that my mini map is bugged and doesn't work. When they steal any item, really. Having to smash apart an entire store to get 3 planks because they steal every single one is a bit ridiculous. I would prefer if you could target and kill survivors. Also, maybe an ability to put some kind of Keep Out sign on the main door to your lair would be nice, as squatters coming in while you're away and trying to claim the place is annoying.
Groups of people should really have someone on watch always when the others are sleeping, then make the guard wake up the rest if attacked. Would make followers a lot more useful as well.
Press "O" and change theirs directvies to "don't sleep" while you're asleep. More complex orders are planed for the future.
Has anyone noticed that reaching level 3 in Awake and Light Eater doubles the rate at which the related stat drains? Now my 3-week old character loses 2 sleep and 2 food every turn.Seems like a bug, you should post this here http://www.roguetemple.com/forums/index.php?topic=1197.0
My new run is doing great. Found a pharmacy and collected some medicine, then found a grocery store with enough food to keep me alive for a week! I'm just resting inside with my companion untill we run out of food.I did that too, then a disciple decided to come in through all the shelves. Amazingly enough, I survived the encounter. Though at night some other nasty thing got me and by morning I was roaming the streets in search of BRAAAENS.
Damn, killed at Day One, Hour Twenty-Three. I was locked up in a supermarket where, from what I can tell by the dead bodies and empty guns, there was a massacre. I had already blocked the three entrances, and only one zombie remained inside. She just managed to kill me in meele combat. I should have used that shotgun...

Yeah normally when I see that sort of stuff I save the game and THEN try to kill them without my uber shotgun. If I fail, reload and kill.

I am no save scummer, good sir! I will fight and die on my own terms!
Erm, what kind of issue you're having?
And yea, somehow, someway a zombie got through the massive shelf barricade and killed me and my supposedly awake partner in my sleep, darnit.
I still have yet to survive more then 10 days.
I havent exactly checked most, or even some of the "bug fix" stuff, but im having a problem downloading. This problem may even have been discussed in the thread already, but im not reading 140 posts again. =/
Whenever I try to download alpha 3 from megaupload, it works for like 3 minutes, then the connection gets reset. Cant download it because it wont finish. I even got an account with megaupload, seeing if it was because I didnt have one. Same result.
I have a dial-up connection(might be why), Vista, and thats probably all thats needed to be known.
"Edit" Tried it with and without account on IE, and without account on Firefox.
Bikers don't need guns to kill zombies when they have jackets that awesome.
We should get solo good hero bikers for a change :P.I got that email I posted a few pages back, you will be able to draw your own soon man.
Also that huge district reminded me of Nights of the Dead warcraft map. If only I could change graphics to more gloomy one, I would draw ALL of them :).
I think this game is pretty damned good for a zombie survival roguelike. Still, a few annoying things. I will usually die to a legitimate death. But often, I'll have a nice safehouse or store boarded up and in the case of the store, shelves barricading the door. I decide to wait or sleep and when I wake up, the zombie is already attacking. Now, I can almost understand sleeping through that kind of stuff, but if I'm awake, and just waiting, I shouldn't just watch as a zombie plows through my barricades and begins to attack me.
Anyway, still been having fun. Not doing all that well, but still fun. Most fun game so far was finding a CHAR office right at the start, breaking in, stealing a bunch of their crap, including two shotguns, 3 medkits and some armor. Nobody even stopped me.
Jervous, what settings are you using?
That district looks massive.
Elie Carpenter was a man and a civilian.
Just remember... while you are sleeping a disciple will tear through the barricades and kill you.
That won't stop them.It does when said zombie is unable to path to you, I find they time out if you have 2 tiles or more of space they cannot see through in a row.
Yeah, but some zombies are especially hate objects, and will smash any furniture they find.
Trust me, if you stay in a building more than a few days, you'll notice exploratory attacks on your barricades.
huh, does food respawn in those grocery shops? I keep swapping districts when things get too hot in the current one.
what's bows for?Shooting zombies?
I have seen crossbows, lots of ammo. I think they are in sport stores.
I prefer Char buildings, simply because its all rooms and doors. Hide in one of the rooms near the back, and barracade it, and you got a pretty low chance of getting discovered.Break down a door and cover it with a fridge.
Three problems with it though. Cant get a bed in there due to doors, Char people usually dont like me, and Char buildings are kind of rare.

Actually, food basically spawns as "A new wave of refugees has arrived!" and they have food with them. Thus, when they die, they drop food everywhere.
you would think those cars would stop burning eventually. And after raining for so long too.
there is plenty of food to go around. I dont think you really need to worry about it. Just be sure to get light eater maxed.
Also I think there is a way to win. Get all skills up to level 3. I dont know how many days that is though.

This is probably glaringly obvious, but how does one find the screenshots you have taken?

My Documents.
This game is okay, but I agree with everyone who says zombie masters, disciples, and neophytes are stupid. I think Dead rising had the right idea. Tons and tons and tons of zombies, all of which are slow and stupid. You can't kill them all, but you can out run them.
This game will be better when:
You can go up to the second floor and jump out of a barricaded house.
You can set traps and wake up when your defenses are being broken.
Special infected are removed.
There is a better base building aspect.
I also agree that it would be cool if the Zombies when somewhat dormant during the day. That way you'd have a few hours to gather supplies before you had to run back, hide, and defend. I know someone already brought this up.
char offices are easy to empty if you know when the guards sleep times are.

The End.
I end up holing into the red buildings with tons of medkits and shotguns. Going out in the day for food. The red-outlined black wall buildings with similar furniture are the CHAR offices.
I checked and the zombies haven't attacked the selves I pushed yet.Just you wait. A disciple will pass by one day and murder you in your sleep.
I'll go for the items and such if you go for the characters Deon. Deal?I wanted to make character sprites... And items should match them. So wait a bit if you want, ok? Or you could make a totally different set :). I would like to collaborate but we need better base sprites first.
Human sprites changed means haircuts, clothes, items etc. changed :). It's 6 AM here so I need some sleep first.You... Stayed up through the night again?
I've just got a crazy idea to make all survivors into dwarves and monsters into HFS demons, and city in a cave location with towercaps instead of trees...Hahahaha. Dwarf Fortress corrupts the soul, doesn't it?
DAMN YOU DF! You fill all my mind and take all my love :D.
Because the trees do not really fit 1-tile height I've decided to change them to exotic bushes. Now the question of how the bushes got there. :P
Now parks look nice :D

And I don't want to go Chibi style. No way.
By the way, how do you hire people, once you get the Leadership skill?Stand next to the person you want to hire and press 't' Then, press the key for the direction the NPC is standing in.
By the way, how do you hire people, once you get the Leadership skill?Stand next to the person you want to hire and press 't' Then, press the key for the direction the NPC is standing in.
The amount of people you can have is limited by how many leadership points you have; the most you can have is 3.
Also, i havn't tried it yet, but you MIGHT be able to avoid this limitation by taking an NPC with the leader skill who already has followers on as a follower to yourself. That way you have a bunch of NPCs linked to another NPC, which is linked to you; potentially every NPC could end up following you if you did this enough times, where every NPC has leadership at 3, and 3 followers with leadership 3, etc. Of course the amount of food it would take to keep this number of survivors alive would quickly become impossible to maintain.
May I ask, what is a neck leg?Uhhhh, a leg for a neck?
May I ask, what is a neck leg?
Edit: Man it's disappointing how bad the AI is but still, it's a pretty fun game. I'm on Day 20 now and have an Army Rifle with 120 rounds of ammo, an Army vest, a med kit, and 3 Army rations. If followers worked a bit better I'd have some of them too but they all forget to eat (even if food is right there on the ground) and die. They should take the food and eat when hungry.
To everyone, about the AI in general, I'd like to hear about concrete problems so I can try to fix/improve them:Serious issues:
1. What AI (baddies, goodies or followers)?
2. What does this AI do that is stupid/bad/annoying?
I like to break into char offices grab what ever I can, and then barracade them when I leave so they can't be looted.
Grab everything you can and drag it back to your main safe house. When you go out next only take a gun, extra amo, a med kit, and armor. Waste the ammo in any guns you run across (why not?). Rampage. Rinse repeat.
In my current game I have a pretty nice safehouse with two layers of shelfs infront of the front door and an inner cube protecting my stash of food, weapons, and medkits. I sleep with a shotgun.
They should take the food and eat when hungry.
The only reason they do not :
1. Their directives is set to "don't take items".
2. Their inventory is full. Most likely you gave them too much items, because they are supposed to always keep one slot free for food.
3. You gave them an order to guard/patrol and let them rot here with no food.
4. They are in danger and don't have time to eat (unlikely).
They should take the food and eat when hungry. They are programmed to eat only when hungry and I've never seen them eat when not hungry. I'll check again, might be a bug.
I think the only thing that it could be (because 1 and 3 aren't even triggered, and 4 isn't likely as there's no zombies around) is 2, but even when they do have an empty slot, they don't pick up food. Or rather, they pick it up, but they don't SAVE it. They immediately eat the food and then its wasted. If they'd pick up food and save it for when they're hungry (or to just have a spare), it'd be much better.
They are programmed to eat only when hungry and I've never seen them eat when not hungry. I'll check again, might be a bug.
---
Keep posting AI suggestions, I'll read all of them but don't have time to answer all the points.
i just want to kill other survivors.This.
i usually put something big in frount of the door usually keeps em out
i just want to kill other survivors.
It's highly unlikely now, but I once died sleeping next to soldiers and was trapped in a corner as a disciple swiped at me and two soldiers were sleeping right next to me. I had no chance since it got the first blow as I died right next to them.
I got killed by a someone playing obnoxious music she seems to be able to shoot farther then can see.
Well can you program them to carry spares? Makes holing up with followers completely pointless.
And here's an 'in-action' shot of the bug.
Both hungry. I've waited several turns to allow them to pick up the groceries, but they just stand there. Take item directive is on, and they both have free inventory slots (as shown with Patty).
What's the food consumption per hour during sleep? It seems to be about the same as being awake, which really isn't quite accurate. Course, considering the theme of the game, that's probably not a top priority.
Here's a bug i've noticed:WAD. Sleep decrease faster during night hence the jump in the timer during day/night switches (ref. manual).
The timer for your sleep will jump on a time event change. The skill 'Awake' may have something to do with it as well, or at least i noticed it more easilly when i have the awake skill at 3.
I got myself down to 0 hours of awake-time left. I hit the sleep key and slept in a bed, and the timer increased normally. I got to 9 hours on the sleep timer or around there and the new day came; the sleep timer then set itself to 24hrs. It then increases as normal again, and i hit 56 hours of awake time...
A few hours later and i go from some 50 hours down to 23 hours, because "sunset" came along.
Edit - Awww damnit, a 3.1 crash. Thanks, will fix that.
<snip>
or just their stats increasing each days without a limitation in their own traits like the player
I think that exp through killing is a bad idea, fighting should be the last choice. I also think that zombies shouldn't get stronger overtime, there should be just more of them.I agree with that but I wouldn't mind other options if I could toggle them.
So you're ok with killer droids instead of black ops and x-com agents instead of national guard? Then it will be ready soon :P.
So you're ok with killer droids instead of black ops and x-com agents instead of national guard? Then it will be ready soon :P.
Let me guess. You're going to end up sprite modding this game into a chrysalid attack, arn't you?
Misinformed. I don't know the criteria for "being a roguelike" but it's not the need to have ASCII graphics. see: Elona.Roguelikes are generally turn based, tile games with a preference for characters over graphics, and are sometimes extremely hard.
It's day seven in my game (alpha 3.1,) and I've just had this crash 4 times in a row.I got that crash before, I was sleeping then an NPC shouted for some reason and I crashed.
Crash report.Spoiler (click to show/hide)
First 3 times I was trying to enter a new district, crashing sometime before the game finished simulating 5300 turns.
Last time, I successfully made it through, and cleared out a CHAR office. The crash came out of nowhere as I barricaded myself in.
I usually don't bother with CHAR offices unless zombies already cleared 'em out. In the previous versions they were loaded with shotguns and medkits, and the CHAR guards inhabiting the place have decent armor. Said guards are dangerous, though.Yea, +2 armor and like 7 firearms skill.
day 14:
Tons of food, ammo for evey gun, each gun, military armor.......... with greatly increased number of zombies, still got tons of medpacks, and full health, and a huge kill count.... ammo makes it too easy I'm finding.... zombie corpses are EVERYWHERE! i find that as long as you hunt them down before they evolve, you're safe, i spend half the day killing off the nights spawn, rest gathering more items, to easy now, any suggestions for challenges anyone?
.... zombie corpses are EVERYWHERE!
any suggestions for challenges anyone?change settings ) default ones are pretty easy
I believe he meant without restarting.any suggestions for challenges anyone?change settings ) default ones are pretty easy
I believe he meant without restarting.i think some settings change without restart actually ) though haven't checked. you can see it in the mortem logs...
Guy walks right into my house and steals all my supplies, and I CAN'T shoot him?
drag a bed it
Uhhh, you just break windows and doors down to planks and shove the bed out.can't take beds through broken windows, door you can after you break em, and pro tip: Watch your stamina, if it gets to exhausted, and you get hit by a zombie and take even one dmg, it will stay at exhausted for two turns, you can be zerg swarmed by skeletons just because you are to exhausted to fight back.
I tried maxing everything for 570% difficulty. My best effort was to survive 14 hours (probably 90% of the time I would die in the first 3 hours).any suggestions for challenges anyone?change settings ) default ones are pretty easy
All my games end with me getting killed by bikers.
Just like real life!
Or maybe people die when they get shot.point is you don't but they do, they also don't wear armor... which is unrealistic, heck a soldier can take down 2 black ops... makes little sense.
think of this, if you saw a guy in army armor, with tons of weapons, covered in blood, who obviously isn't in the army, coming towards you and you had a gun, would you not shoot? i mean the shock factor would cause em to attack.
It occurs to me that gangers and bikers should demand items from you, rather than kill you on sight. If you don't give them it, then they'll rough you up, enslave you, or kill you.

Well, my point is that there's nearly no distinction between the undead and the living.well that's a 'clever' social commentary =D
Ok, this is an older version, (before ammo) where I think I pretty much won the game.
All skills maxed.
I was holed up in a char office that had.
-A fridge blocking the first 1 width entrance.
-a cabinet where each door used to be
- a fridge where the door the the rearmost room was (my sleeping quarters)
My stocks included
90 army rations
19 groceries
10 health packs
I had the following full guns
11 shotguns
7 pistols
21 army pistols
5 hunting rifles
I finally got bored of killing all of the zombies in my blocks and the surrounding blocks, and stopped bothering with army drops. So I took off my armour and fed myself to the zombies
69800 points and just under 500 kills.
Next version!
Is there a way to pick up items without using the mouse? IE a hotkey?
I was doing EXTREMELY well in my last game. I had a very safe house that was stocked with 7 medkits, a BUNCH of blue and green pills (although I never used them), 20 or so bandages, at least 30 army rations, a ton of shotgun, rifle, and heavy pistol ammo, and a little trash heap in the corner. And of course a bed!
My guy had army body armor, an army pistol, a giant hammer, a shotgun, a rifle, and at any given time I'd have one stack of primary ammo for my rifle. This was looking to be a VERY long game, I was having no trouble at all with anything. Zombie masters? No prob.. Gangstas? No prob.. Bikers? That slaps me on the knee. Black ops? No.. oh wait. Yes problem.
I was exploring and I bumped into a couple of black ops fellows.. I got shot once by one of them and I went down like a ton of bricks. These guys are insanely dangerous.Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I survived for a Day and 6 hours, this game is tough going. Is it wise to start making a permanent base or should I always be moving? Because I need a source of food if I want to do the former.good idea is to keep moving for the first two days, then when you find a good defensible location, with a store that has food nearby (or the store itself) barracade the crap outta it, and only go out during daytime for quick ammo/weapons runs.
well known fact, due to the self inflicted injuries, depressed attitude, and old scars, emos are usually unnoticed by zombies due to the zombies confusion on whether they are living or dead.
Jesus, my guy looks like some sorta EMO. :-\

4. Companion "Sarah Irvin" civilian woman with two first names too. Has been with me since day 22.

Shelves....er, I hope you havent got attached to that base. :P
"Edit" Hmm, finally tried out the new version. A lot harder. Expecially when you go into differant districts. I entered a new district and emptied atleast 50 pistol pullets into a zombie horde lead by a master. Then later died to gangsters because I got overconfident and didnt realise two pistol pullets could end me. :P

The dead-white makeup also gives the apperance of a post mortum status. This is why we should kill all emos.

um, i hope you all know that 3.2 is out ) quite an improvement. That was fast. Let me see if it's save compatible.
I would not want to eat meat that's been sitting out for 3 days! You're thinking too specifically. Jerky, sausages, and other plastic wrapped pre-cooked things that come from animals. "Meat" is a general term to avoid having to sprite multiple specific meat-looking objects, and code specific rules for each of those objects.

[More food] should certainly be done, but the survivior AI is very close to what it needs to be.Yes, the food things shouldn't be top priority. Also, hell yeah the AI is certainly a great deal better at doing its survival thing. I think the chance that non-follower survivors get skill improvements is a big help to that; hopefully it will be an option soon so you can set it to 0% or to 100% (and the same for the follower skill gain, so if you really wanted to, AIs never gain levels)
The reason the power grid would go down isn't that all the power plants would be trashed immediately. The grid itself is what would fail. It's difficult keeping a complex power grid running when there are erratic swings in the power usage. It's a complex electrical engineering problem that requires foresight to avoid blackouts. The utilities don't expect everyone to turn on their lights at midnight when the zombies strike. And getting the power grid back online is a whole other headache that requires the self starting plants and the plants which require an outside jump to act in coordination, hard to do during the apocalypse. If you are in a region dependent on coal and nuclear power, it's not inconceivable that sabotage or bad luck could take out the power pretty quickly and the chaos would keep it down. On the other hand, if there was a small local plant it might be realistic to isolate it from the grid and restore local power. Or if you are in a region with a lot of green power the grid would probably intermittently come on and off again until all the solar cells overheat and stop working or the windmills connections to the grid shut down. If you're in Las Vegas the Hoover Dam would probably stay on unless someone deliberately took it out. Coal power is the vast majority of power in North America and the majority in most regions of Europe.
1)AI do discard items. Could happen they died at the wrong time and dumped stuff.
2)Decaying foods means you have to actively search for army supplies or food carried by refugees.
3)Bugs:
Melee weapon stamina penalty is not used properly, so that's a bug.

I like how the updates are going, gameplay is pretty intense now and surviving takes more then just getting alot of food and finding a relatively safe place to barricade yourself in. Plus Its nice to see survivors actualy trying to survive this time around.
Welp, had another good round. Theres a couple spoilers in the mortom, so if you havent seen the HFS, just read the score or something.Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I was hoping I could see if there was a month achievement, but luck didnt favour me.

Oh, found a "half glitch". I was standing on a stack of 10 blue pills(because the buzzards where about to take the items I dropped), and I decided to wait till he leaves and then proceed what I was doing. However, he just stood there next to me. I held down the wait button and he just stood there, getting hungry and tired. Then a friend came, so two people were staring at me. Then another. All ran when the zombie master came. :P
So if anyone wants to report that to the developer for me it would be nice(unless he still checks this).

Staring contest?
[Subways]A seperate level entirely from sewers hopefully, no engineer in their right mind would connect or even put sewers and subway on the same horizontal level.
subwaysIt'd be nice ifforplaces like this there's a way to fix up the trains and generators, allowing fast/safe travel, and lighting thats better then night but worse then day, so you could travel down there at night time going back to your base?
The staring contest is an AI glitch. It wants one of the items you are standing on and patiently waits. And waits. And then waits some more. I knew the problem but was lazy since it didn't seem to be noticed by players ;D :o. I'll fix that.
I'll add subways of course, that's what I meant by "undergrounds" in the "next version" section of the game faq.
There's still a lot of stuff I want to add to the maps (police/fire station, factories, airport, mayor office, CHAR places related to the plot...) but they probably wont get in the next version yet, depends how fast I progress on other tasks.
I think I found an AI issue. Whenever a survivor attempts to barricade their sleeping area, they always seem to only barricade two of the (most of the time) four entrances into the room. Anyone else getting this?
I think they're following that Zombie Lord in the doorway. Do the zombie master's groups come with the masters and the lord as well?
Don't you love going on a food run to feed your family of survivors and all you find is 8 expired groceries?
Puke fest in the gun shop we are hulled down in.
People with insane memory usage and loading time, what options settings do you use?
My guess is that you have almost everything maxed, correct? :P
Please tell me so I can rebalance the settings. 8)
I like how , in this game, the military is helpfull, but not very and dies and runs out of ammo.
A shotgun might be worth multiple items. Not just one.
What does CHAR stand for?
Campaign for Humans Against Reanimated?
Just starting to play version 3.21. Can I just say, were are all the items? 3.1 was full of them. Game is definitely more FUN. (Need to use run key more.)
What did that have to do with what I posted Creamcorn?
Can I just say, where are all the items? In other survivors' pockets.
Can I just say, where are all the items? In other survivors' pockets.
When you first start your game, if you play the game with the initial district revealed, take a moment to look at where you're spawning.
If you see a fridge or a table, that room will probably have groceries in it. If you see cabinets, there might be items on them. Of course, survivor ai's seem to spawn anywhere in a building, so by the time you get there the item (and survivor) may all ready be gone.
(look at your saved game files they shouldn't be that big especially at default settings).
And independance!
Few things I want to ask.Use? Flashlights? Cellphones?LOL
Does anyone use flashlights or cell phones?
Does anyone actually like the crossbow over a firearm?
So I thought I'd give this a try today. Entertaining stuff. I'm on day seven now but seem to face more problems with people taking stuff out of my stash than I do with zombies. Only time will tell though, eh?

Zombies, for some reason, completely avoid CHAR offices, it seems. So I sleep in them. Best source of shotgun ammo as well.
Zombies will follow your scentGood luck if the zombie that picked up on it was a zombie master, with followers. ::)
New peeks for version 4.0! And yes, there may be powerplants. (Or at least it sounds like it to me.) Any ideas/thoughts? (Zombie alligators in the sewers?)

Fund it.That sounds good.
Also, a sleeping bag should paralyze you for a round when you wake up, since you zip it up, and to use it you'd have to drop it on the ground first.
So it would heal you, but it'd also make you really vulnerable, and you might lose it if attacked. Don't pick bad places to sleep, though, and it's great.
I agree. With the sewers coming in the next update, these would be handy as I seriously doubt there will be any beds down there.Fund it.That sounds good.

I don't think sleeping in sewer filth is a good idea, sleeping bag or not.You wouldnt be sleeping in sewer filth, there are rooms down there.
Some park benches could have a higher health metal version. This just made me realize that matresses are the best zombie barricades. Think about it. They cant smash them down or claw through it.
For beds, the important part of a bed isn't the frame, but the matress; when a bed is "destroyed" it should be the frame that goes first. (metal frame beds should also exist) This means beds could have two health bars: One for the frame, and one for the matress. The way the matress works as i see it, is that it's a really big medkit, with alot of health that it can give you but only slowly. If you use the bed while injured, you use the medkit (and bleed all over it) and eventually it becomes an unusable mess. Vomiting and having something die over the matress should also damage its health (or lighting it on fire) Otherwise, the matress cannot be destroyed, but can be pushed around.
Even when the matress "dies" from use, it becomes a skeletal metal-spring version which is really crappy (1/9th normal) but infinite use, and stacks with use of a sleeping bag (2/9ths normal?) to 1/3rd a normal matress.
This is slowly but surely turning into Left 4 Killing Dead Rising Floor 2: The Roguelike.Perpetuated :D
Double Perpetuated. :D
Another update. Looking good.
But when you've jumped on a fence, you are directly on top of it. That should take stamina.the way the game displays what's happening, it sounds like the player is jumping from fence post to fence post instead of just walking along the damn thing like a normal person would. Also, these fences could have wider-then-normal tops, making walking along them easier. anyways, the tl;dr of my idea is that:
And on crafting-What about generated steel mills that have steel ingots, and some of the stuff you need for crafting-You could craft pistols, rifles, etc. as your blacksmithing skills goes up as well as the ammo for them. Imagine a survivor settlement, building large barricades and rifles and such. Wish there was a realistic farming system too, that way you could hold out for extended periods of time.NotSureIfSerious.jpg

Well, Farming would have to be balanced out, since obviously it's not easy to farm for yourself and others in a zombie apocalypse. Maybe it would require a skill, and when plants finish growing they have a chance to survive based on A. how many times water reached them, B. How many times stepped on, and C. Farming level of character who planted them. It would take a few days to grow the crops yes, and they would go bad faster unless stored in a fridge, but it'd be a self-sustainable thing.

Dear god Mechanoid, what settings do you have? Jesus christ, that's.. More zombies than I've ever seen in one place.280% 8)
I've seen zombie master clusters about half that size with the default settings. On Day. Fucking. One.There's a more powerful zombie master that can control other ZM's. That is what you probably ran into, if evolution was turned on.
just started playing this, longest survive 3 days so far, Are there any good basic strategies?shopping district, subway, bunker down and horde food.
He'll likely check it out again no matter what we do. There aren't that many places on the internet who know about Rouge Survivor. If only we could spread the word.
Also, his youtube channel claims he is in France. Just thought I'd mention it.
Also, is there a sewer key? Those fences are quite nice to trap you and get swarmed by zombies.Sewer grates are intentionally indestructable, i think, so there is no way to get around them. Nor have i seen any version that has a door.
This character should start with Hauler 3 for TEN army rations, Light Eater 3, and Awake 3. This way the character will be more likely to be awake when the player comes by, will be around for longer so the player has more time to do his thing.please dont do it =D
When this character dies from starvation or otherwise not having informed the player, the player should get a message "You feel depressed for a moment."
Can anyone provide pics of the CHAR Base?

As far as I can work out, spraypaint is used to mark areas of interest. A spraypainted square shows as a different colour on the minimap. Useful for marking out areas of interest in the sewers (for example a ladder that leads up in front of the grocery store) or marking out the exact location of your safehouse, etc.
I think it attracts more migrants or something, maybe you could mark warnings on buildings or something.
Also what should I do at first, make a safehouse? Also how many weapons are there? (don't tell me what they are just how many

Suggestion:Being a nanny, but how is 10 max undead and no zombie evolution awesome, even for 50 days?
Presumably the player is wearing a watch, because he always knows the time. What if that watch had an integrated alarm that he could set to do stuff like:
Alarm duration - buzz the alarm for 1 turn, or 10 turns, or an entire 30 turns
Alarm count-down - if set to 60, and it's at turn 720, the alarm goes off at turn 780; and then for however many turns as set above
Specific time setting - 2400 hours, midnight; or 0710 hours, slightly after sunrise.
Leaders could also set their followers' watches. This way you could actually have the gaurds on a proper and well-timed rotation.
[Edit - also, fun leadership fact: Don't forget about the "Drop all" command. You can scam alot of food and ammo by doing this, and you don't even need to trade them for it!]

Not. Going. To. Ask.
Being a nanny, but how is 10 max undead and no zombie evolution awesome, even for 50 days?Starvation was turned on, making every survivor that spawns a potential zombie for a total of 25% zombies. Now that i look at the character dump again, it doesn't say that survivor starvation was turned on, or at 100% starvation zombies. Also, the map size is just a little larger then the smallest.
Say... Is it possible to set zombie population to 0%? Turn survivor pop way high up, and try to survive in a city gone mad. Screw zombies, now you have to deal with people.

I agree about the whole insta-zombie problem.
Even with the fastest kind of zombies- the supernatural kind, not the virus kind- there needs to be at least a few seconds where the recently dead fully "die" and become empty corpses for the souls of demons to animate.
It says 4-0. I'm at 4-0. It's a business district full of a bunch of char offices/shelters and one house. Every single square has been explored.

I don't want code-based mods, I just want to be able to change enemies' names and parameters (speed/damage/hp).That is code based mods.
I got this when I try to run the game:Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I really want to play. Any help?
On a normal graph, you start in the bottum left corner, but on this one, you start at the top left.
How is it code-based if we do not get any code at all? Values are just values, the pictures we edit actually are variables too.I don't want code-based mods, I just want to be able to change enemies' names and parameters (speed/damage/hp).That is code based mods.
Changing any variables is considered in my book a code based mod.
In a normal program like this, information such as the capabilities of units like the zombies would not be kept in the code, but in an external database, not unlike an external graphics file.
Try updating your video drivers and net framework. It worked for me a few versions ago.
Resident Evil 2.Same deal for the police station,Except that at a police station, you'll have a decent chance of finding weapons and ammo, and a creepy police chief/amateur taxidermist who kills the mayor's daughter so can stuff her corpse and have sex with it.
Not. Going. To. Ask.
I am.
WHUT THE FLYING FUxK?
I updated net framework to 3.5 and the issue still bugs me.
So if all that's true, can this be implemented? Those are new abilities that are not in the game.
Chainsaw-Limited to melee range has an ammo meter that depletes over time when active
A gun that can shoot through walls?
Night Vision goggles?
Meals Ready to Eat (MRE a real army food item) that can only be activated by another item (hot water)?
Also, I'd find it appropriate if all other armors except for army body armor did not take up space. For the most part, standard U.S. military body armor weighs anywhere from 22-30 pounds.Every item takes a slot, even smaller ones like pills. This is to force the player to make gear choices.
Fix for no-minimap and directx crashes.
I might have found a fix for people who have these bugs/glitches:
1. no minimap displayed.
2. game crashes as soon as it starts and throws a directx exception.
You guys have probably an Intel onboard video card.
If you are experiencing these problems above and are ready to test the fix for great justice:
1. Mail me.
2. I send you the fix or tell you where to get it.
3. You test it and tell me what it does.
4. ???
5. Profit!
Many thanks to the brave volunteers!
Yeah, it was pretty awesome. The bikers are clearly a reference to dawn of the dead, when they just come in and ruin your perfectly good barricade and kill your entire party. However, is there any way to turn your cellphone off to spare battery?
Hi there.Ah I see, I can understand limitations of engine (because I wrote games too, but they were really small and amateurish).
I will add data modding in a future version. :-*
You will be able to change existing actor models and item models stats 8), but no new models. :'(
For various reasons I did not design a "proper" game engine, just the minimal engine I needed for the gameplay. That explains the "no new stuff" part. Designing a proper engine is nice and all, but for me it gets in the way of making and finishing an actual game (cf blog posts about failed past projects, all had grand visions, nice configurable engines... and no gameplay, cute hollow shells).
Ps: "rouge" means "red" in French, proper word is "rogue" :P
I may actually ask Roguejack to release this as a mod... But I am always unsatisfied with this and that, and I constantly want to update something... You know me :).
Grenades have been added. I haven't played in a while, but I'll have to pick it up again soon.Grenades?! I might have to get into this again.
