Gnomoria and Game of a Dwarves or something like that. Both of them are lame-ass (see: casual gaming (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/images/4/40/FunComic.png)) bad copies of DF. I recommend Dwarf Fortress.

Apparently Dungeon Keeper 2 is a bit like DF.

For other rogue-likes you can look here; http://roguebasin.roguelikedevelopment.org/index.php?title=Main_Page

That's were I find most of my time-wasters. Most of them are free as well, so that's a bonus.

I've played Evil Genius, in which you have to micromanage a hidden underground lair similar to Blofeld's in You Only Live Twice.

Of course, it doesn't compare even slightly with DF, except it has 3D graphics and some nice touches.

Depends on how much like DF. None of the DF-likes actually designed to be like DF are really worth playing, although Stonehearth (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1590639245/stonehearth) looks like it might change that - if it fulfills its design goals effectively and has reasonably fun gameplay it could end up with a versatile and vibrant adventure/modding community like the original Neverwinter Nights.

Things that are only kind of similar in that you build a base have already been mentioned - Dungeon Keeper is the king of that genre as far as I know, though it's getting dated. If you just like building things indirectly Majesty: A Fantasy Kingdom Sim was the first game to do a lot of that, although you just place buildings moreso than truly designing anything.

At any rate, the best game for being like DF is DF itself.

This is my own main problem with roguelikes lately - the Dwarf Fortress is just too good.
If every roguelike from now on ran on DF's "engine", I'd gladly play 'em.

I'm probably just too used to DF's interface and ASCII (YES, ASCII CAN DIFFER!).
Sad me.

Try: Any generic RPG. Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall is one that often comes to mind for me as similar, at least in its world generation.

It looks like DF but prettier, which I don't argue with. It's cool how you can see your stuff building and such, and it looks like building would be easier and a bigger part of the game.

The combat looks horribly though, and judging by the trailer I doubt you'll actually have to dig for different types of metal and make stuff for your guys like you do in DF. It looks more like how towns does it, were you just can make anyone a "Warrior", and they fight for you.

OP, you might consider backing this project if you have the patience and the money.

Also: not sure if these were mentioned, but if you're looking for a game like DF, but  easier to learn and play (judging by your grammar), you might want to consider my before mentioned Towns game. It's like DF for people who can't/don't have time to learn DF, aka lessors that will soon be under our rule. The game Gnomoria is also a similar concept to Towns; DF-like game-play, simpler everything, unfathomably less in-depth.

You could try miner wars if you're into hardcore.

It's like adventure mode in a 3d spaceship; everything will kill/cripple you. They'll tell you what to do, as you're supposed to be doing it. Listening to them will kill you.

Exploring is fun, but it too will kill you.

There is also mining, but 60% of the rocks will kill you.

If you're looking for survival roguelikes then Unreal World is a good one and you're already playing that. You should also try Project Zomboid and Cataclysm DDA.

I believe Timber and Stone: http://www.timberandstonegame.com/ (http://www.timberandstonegame.com/) is an excellent DF-esq type of game in 3-D. Definitely a bit lighter but I believe the developer does plan on adding many features as time passes much like in DF.

Speaking of 3D it would amazing if DF were to eventually be ported over with something like Unity.

if you like DF adventure but want more depth than "become vampire then kill stuff" wait for the next update, sounds like toady is going to have a MASSIVE overhaul to combat and the like in adventuer mode, as well as more depth to interactions between races, like occupattion and rebelion and the like, i think the next update is scheduled (hahaha schedules) for sometime this summer.

Cultures, Alien nations and Wiggles are both kinda DFy.

You have families with kids that can learn new profesions in school (or learn them by practice in Cultures albeit slower).
It's pretty much a lightened DF.

Daggerfall has only one random world generation seed, so I'm pretty sure you'll get the same world every time. It's just that, you know, it's the size of Italy, so of course you're probably not going to see all of it in your lifetime.

If you're into more building and production management type stuff I recommend Anno 1404.
You can pick it up pretty cheap off amazon/ebay. Alternatively buy it from the ubisoft store but then you'll have to use their "game launcher". D:

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned ADOM.

Really popular rogue-like from 1994, still releasing new versions.  Arguably a combination of the best features from the hacks and the bands.  Obvious predecessor to DF.  You can tell it influenced Daggerfall as well.

Much smaller world than DF but (compared to adventure mode) more skills, magic, a more interactive environment, and IMO more replayability because there are goals to reach and more ways to play the game.  Each class drastically changes your strategy and there are some interesting ones like "farmer."

EDIT: and I can confirm Daggerfall is the same world every time.  The dungeons are all randomly generated, but they're the same design (and even the same name) with every character you play.  The game world is actually closer to the size of Mississippi, still big, but it's pretty impossible to walk from one town to another without fast travel because of the limited view distance.  DaggerXL should change that, but for now, kind of have to use fast travel.

Yes.  So is the "Tamriel Rebuilt" project for Morrowind.  The Elder Scrolls games are surrounded by a really good community.

now, bear with me, the Tropico series is very similar to DF for these reasons:
1.the people are stupid, and they will follow your orders when they damn well please
2.an easy way to keep the people happy is build a few bars.
3.meeting foreign/domestic demands is much like mandates, ranging from easy (i was already building a weapons industry anyway) to annoying (we want $10000 in cash/burn the foreigners/use only windmills for energy)
4. very high potential for cruelty. make your workers work for free, and have your army gun down the rebels, because win conditions are boring
also to note i can play many hours of either without knowing what happened with my time
