There was a moderately successful game of Masterwork mod which used the same premise.  There are a few things I recommend you do in order to keep things orderly;

1. Link journals and other character posts in the OP.  Sorting through even a few pages without a glossary is quite cumbersome.

2. When a turn is complete, kindly send a PM to the next in line.

3. A friendly competition between the Fortresses would be entertaining.  Should you choose to do this, you would be tasked with keeping track of kills per year, wealth, etc.  An amusing write-up comparing the Fortresses per year would be quite a chore for you, but ultimately rewarding for reading.

4. In order to ensure that each Fortress is kept at relatively the same time line, a Fortress shouldn't be allowed to advance more than 2 years ahead of its' twin.  To that end, Dorfing and turn requests should be assigned evenly between them.

I feel like forum activity has slowed down quite a bit leading up to the new release this year, so don't be disheartened if this peters out.  Is a fun idea to be sure, but as you say would require a significant playerbase.

Yeah I was just thinking about something like this. It came from wanting to see a Icehold/Murderfloods crossover but that's beside the point. Everything Immortal-D said stands. My idea was that players should play the fort down the list then switch forts to create a kind of parallel dimensions feel. The biggest obstacle is the inactivity in the forum.

You could try reworking the plan. Do it with only three or four people and have them switch between forts. Each fort could have a different goal which might keep them from becoming too much alike. They'd have to be really diverging goals though. Like one could have the goal of colonizing hell and the other could have the goal of building an above ground tower. Those are just the first two that come to mind. Someone else might have better ideas.

thanks for the advice and feedback. I think that I will wait until Toady updates the game before starting this, then the inactivity would be less of a problem.

When you do I'd definitely like to give it a go.

I don't know if I'm looking forward to the version update or not... My computer might not even be able to run it. It barely runs 40.

Just a suggestion, but if you're going for an alternate dimension you could generate two worlds with the same seed which would (I think) give you the same geographic location to found the fortresses in, but a different history for each. Meaning slightly different neighbors, rulers and other background for people to base their inevitable background rp stories on. Fun? Maybe? Feel free to ignore...

As a suggestion: Each time someone plays a 1 year turn, they then have until the end of the following week to upload their write-up of that game, so that each person who receives a save file will always be in the dark about what has happened for the past in-game year.

You may even make the turns 5 in-game years long or however much of those 5 years can be done in 1 week before posting the save file.  This way, the various histories will be even more inscrutable to the person who gets the saved game.

A further modification to this idea might be that at the end of the 1 week or 5 in-game years, that the fortress must be abandoned before saving the game.  The next person then will have to start out "recovering" the site, and will get to rediscover all of the stuff that happened there in the last turn with all of the population marrying, having kids and so on during that two (in game) week between Overseers.

One further expansion on this idea is that there are two fortresses in 1x1 adjacent plots, but run by different dwarven civs.  Each one takes a turn building for a year or five, trying to outdo their neighbor in a kind of "Keeping up with the Urists" type of contest.  They take turns back and forth, attempting to have a more valuable fortress, or to have the highest towers, or to have the most skilled craftsperson/warrior, ect...  Anyway, each fortress is retired before the game is saved and the other fortress is then unretired for their turn.  If ever the game crashes do to a "nemesis unit" error, then another adjacent site can be embarked on by that civ and the old one is retired for good instead.

All of these could be a lot of fun for a parallel fortress game.

You mean 'retired', right? Abandon and all you'll leave the next overseer is a scattering of socks and one lost merchant.

I'd be interested in giving this a shot.

But Bob, I don't think the goal is to make the fort inscrutable to the person who picks it up- that would just over complicate things.

Might be interested in this further down the line. How about using the same embark, same starting seven (basically embark then copy the save), same named dwarves for both forts? Not only would it be interesting to compare the differences in the fortress layouts, but also the fate of the named dwarves. Obviously this will conflict with Shonai_Dweller's suggestion, but its another approach to consider.

That is exactly what I meant. Same world, same embark. I would embark once, save, than copy the world folder and rename it.

This has happened a few times in Breadbowl, and I can confirm it's interesting to see a dwarf alive and well in one copy of the game despite having watched them have their head caved in by an Ettin in the parallel one.

I would recommend starting the divergence after the first year, once a very basic fortress has made and the first two migrations have arrived. Otherwise the only thing the parallel worlds will have in common will be the starting 7 and the map.

I think this is a good idea. A bit more in common would be nice for comparison's sake.

Good thinking.  Splitting the Fortresses after 1 or 2 years would allow for a better comparison down the line, plus whatever amusing reason that Overseer comes up with for a parallel universe.

It'll take awhile for the new version to be stable enough to support a succession game. Maybe it'd be worth it to give it a try if there's enough interest?

Maybe.  Invaders are by no means the only source of !FUN!.  However, if you are experienced enough to not die to self-made disasters, there usually isn't enough other pressure to create suitable entertainment (at least in my opinion).

Okay, it seems that enough people actually want to play this, so I guess I'll start it up now. You can get on the waitlist while I update the OP.

I will also follow QuQuasar's advice and play the for for one year before copying it and posting it. So that'l take some time. Should be soon though.

6. No save scumming unless it is to circumvent bugs/glitches. If any other reason to save-scum occurs, notify me.  If a fortress falls, than the remaining players will be assigned to the other fortress.
I had a thought about this- how about if a fortress falls, we diverge again with the surviving fort and add the remaining players on there?

I suppose that could work. My turn just hit summer. It should be finished by tomorrow.

I'll sign up for a turn. I'm experienced enough not to die to self-made disasters... I think. I did flood a swimming pool the other day but not deep. Now there's just mud all over the engravings, unpleasant but not a disaster.

You're right, we're going to need a lot of players if this is going to be a red vs blue sort of scenario.

Both of you are in.

@Deus Asmoth: I think that it would be better to give the dwarves nicknames in each universe, as you become the overseer of that fortress.

Instead of spoiler-ing everything, have you considered two separate forum threads for the two different fort-forks?

I think a single thread is probably better, since it keeps the forts linked chronologically and thematically.

Both of you in. I am now assigning players to the different fortresses. Take a look at your fortress and only look at reports from that one until you have played your turn.

As for my turn, it is now finished.
Spoiler: screenshots (click to show/hide)
Stats:
Population: 18
Created Wealth: 24175
Kills: 1 Turkey Hen (by the way, anyone who wants to look at the save, you can see a dog wrestling a Turkey Hen in the reports)

Notes
Good starting situation. Rooms for everybody, fully self-sustainable, masonry, carpentry.

Save File
The fortress is here (http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=11219). Elagn, once you get your save file, rename it by adding a 2 instead of a 1. DDDragoni and Elagn, please confirm when you receive the save file.

It's quite simple. Copy the save, retire the duplicate fort, open up Legends, and press 'p.' The world-gen-info will be exported to a .txt file in the parent folder, named "regionX-world_gen_param."

Spring and summer completed. I should have a write-up tomorrow.

I fixed it, converting to ASCII made everything all better.

why. why oh why do you need ascii?

Because that's what the game was coded as. Texture packs don't change just the graphics, they also change the raws to make the graphics work. If the raws don't match up to the texture pack, it can interfere with graphics and gameplay. ASCII is the basic, so it's used to "clear" the effects of texture packs.

It's more using (N) notes.  (p) place a note where the cursor is. (n) to name the note. (t) to add text description for that note.
And then, the bridge should also add a note corresponding to the lever that controls it.

Parallel Fortress Succession Game!
(Version 40.24)

THE GAME IS NOW OVER.
All turns have been finished. Thank you for playing, everybody!

"This is a succession game with a twist. I will play a fortress for 1 year like a normal game, but then, I will duplicate the save and have two fortresses being handed down. The fun from this game will be seeing how much the fortresses will diverge as time goes by. Each player will only play one of the fortresses, and must refrain from reading any of the journals from the other fortress. Be creative so that the divergence will be more interesting."
- origamiscienceguy

Rules
1. Each turn will last 1 dwarven year and the player will have one week to finish and upload their turn. Any player who takes longer than that (without reason) will be skipped and the fort will go to the next player in line.
2. I will assign waitlisted participants to one of the fortresses. Do not look at anything about the other fortress until your turn has finished.
3. All parts of posts regarding the progress of a certain fortress must be in spoilers. If you have not played your turn yet, do not look at any of the spoilers for the fort you are not assigned. so that you won't be inspired by the happenings of the other fort.
4. Use exploits at your own discretion, except for the following, which are forbidden:  free adamantine/steel, using dfhack to create or change items and editing the raws.
5. Do not purposefully cause the destruction of a fortress.
6. No save scumming unless it is to circumvent bugs/glitches. If any other reason to save-scum occurs, notify me.  If a fortress falls, than the surviving fortress will have its save duplicated and the remaining players will play that duplicate save. This will occur as many times as necesary.
7. Have !!FUN!! and be creative.

The Embark
Now, everybody may look at the world, embark site, and embark supplies as they are the same for each fort. You may also view the first year of the fort.
Spoiler: Embark information (click to show/hide)
The materials are the default "play now" items and skills. The map has plenty of trees, and what looks like plenty of metal. It also has flux stone and no aquifer.

Competition
There will also be some competition between the forts in the following areas:
1. Population
2. Wealth
3. Kill count. (Everything except for other dwarves counts towards this)
As a result, make sure that you post the current population, wealth, and kill count once your turn concludes.

Glossary and Player List
This will be updated as Player's turns are completed. And as players join. If you want a second turn on the other fortress, let me know. However, new players will get their turns before yours. Your names will go on a waitlist and assigned once a fortress has run out of players.

Just throwing it out there, but the last turn I played in a succession fortress (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=151709.0) ended with literally the entire population of the fortress dead. Let's hope this one goes slightly better!

Yeah, I'm still working on writing up spring  :-[. I have Halloweenie things to do tomorrow but I'll try to finish it over the weekend.

I have an idea. I know we're dwarfing ourselves as they play the game, but how about the Fort 2 overseers give me the vanilla names of their dwarves and I'll see if they're in Fort 1 and then dorf them and make Named Dwarves Still Alive a competition stat.

Dastot Inodbubnus (brewer) - Dragoni: Arrived in Workclench on the 1st of Sandstone year 125

Ingiz Zolakalath - De:  arrived on the 5th of Malachite year 125

As for the competition, Fortress 2 currently has:
Population: 127
Created wealth: 2,074,000
Dead/missing non-citizens: 124
Named dwarves still alive: 5/5

The save can be found here (http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=11251).

I fully approve! Dragoni and De have been named in Fortress 2. The following need naming in Fortress 1:

Inod Duthalmedtob - Elagn: arrived on the 5th of Malachite, 125
Urvad Imusheshtân - EoyaBosan: arrived on the 27th of Granite, 127

Very Good EoyaBosan, you may now look at any Fortress 1 reports, past or future.

Urlance Woolsbane, please grab the save and post once you have confirmed that the save file is working.

About the cross-fortress dwarfing thing, I think that that is a fine idea since it shouldn't affect each fortress differently, so go ahead and do it if you want.

Good Job De. You may now look at any Fortress 2 reports in the past or future. Don't feel rushed for getting your final report out, you can take your time if you want.

Deus Asmoth it is your turn to handle Fortress 1. Please post here once you can confirm that the save is working.

Good. I was a bit worried.

Here is the final bit of the year 127. I'm sorry it took so long. I've learned a new respect for people who do succession forts. I never realized how much longer it takes to play when you're trying to keep track of all the details and arrange them into an interesting story.

Competition Stats for Fortress One year 127

Population: 106
Named Dwarves Living in Fortress: Origamiscience, Dragoni, De, Elagn
Wealth: 2733604
Artifacts Created: 5
Total Dead on Map: 130
-Dwarves Killed during my turn: 4 (I think this brings dwarf dead up to 7 but it's hard to count)
     -Goblins: 30
     -Titans: 1

Here are some screen shots of Fortress One from the end of my turn.

This sounds like a great idea. I'd ask for a turn, but I'm not exactly good at DF (Iven't even bothered with forges aside from one metal throne), and I'd probably do stupid things. Still hope it goes well!

Dorfing - This is a bit of a complicated fortress. If Deus doesn't see this message and check if you're present in Fort 1, I'll have a look at the save. Zipping programs don't seem to work on my computer (I just went through this whole thing in Immortal-D's experiment of a fortress) so I can't actually get into Fortresss 2 to make direct comparisons.

I suppose you could have a second turn on the other fort if you want. You know what, I'll make this official.

Regarding Second Turns
If you want a second turn on the other fortress, let me know. However, new players will get their turns before yours. Your names will go on a waitlist and assigned once a fortress has run out of players.

I'll unspoiler this comment just because reading the thread about trying to exploit archery training to create infinite adamantine doesn't sound like it's actually a very efficient use of resources regardless of the fortress you're in.

There's also the competition between the two forts to consider (and that is why I concur with De that this discussion be visible to all). Creating adamantite by using the archery exploit differs little from just creating it in DFHack, both would make the comparison of created wealth an absurdity.

I was wondering anyway if the small-ish DFHack tricks I normally use, such as clean and fix-ster would be OK and though I see no way to check if the other side uses them, there ought to be an agreement on what is acceptable.

Not that I truly believe such a thing as a gentledwarf to exist.

Fortress 1.

About exploits: If you think that it goes against the spirit of the game, don't do it. While a few thinks I will outright ban: free adamantine/steel, using dfhack to create or change items. editing the raws.

For things like atom-smashing, dwarven radar, dfhack clean, use your own discretion.

That's fine, I've kind of given up trying to keep the forts synchronized. Do you think that you will be finished before the weekend is done?

Same question to Deus Asmoth.

I had this problem as well and got around it by contacting them. Apparently they've been blacklisted by a bunch of email servers, including gmail, so you never even see the activation email in your spam box. Support activated my account for me when I asked.

Although the saves are compatible, updating gets us very little except for bugs, since a lot of the new features require a new world. There's also a greater chance of the save being corrupted.

Sorry everybody, I completely forgot about this over Christmas beak and I have already started another game on the forums. In the past, if I try to run two games at once, usually both games end up gone. So I won't be able to run this game anymore. If somebody else wants to take over then feel free to. I'll put a link in the OP to whoever is running it now. Sorry.

I could continue to run it, why the heck not.

So should I make a new thread?

And will we upgrade to the newest version or not?

Just edit your "IN" post. I'll make a link to it in the OP.

Save (131-01-01) downloaded and running.

I told Daniel this will be a very busy week for me already but what with others postponing, I'll take my turn but probably only start on Tuesday, Jan. 19th, expect an initial update at that date..

What is the tileset being used? It looks much like the Phoebus tileset I'm used to (or is that LNP converting automagically when I load it?). I'm running 0.40.24 with LNP r20

Right, it took ages before I dared unpause the game and I am certain I must have missed some important matters. Also the game runs sort of slowly, so things are not progressing as fast as I'd like. So my first report covers only one month.

This is still the old version since none of the new stuff would work unless we make a new world, and bugs would probably ruin it.

After a quick look at workflow's source files it seems it saves the settings to the savegame. Not really sure how dfhack PersistentData thing actually works, but I cannot find other place where data could be stored.

Cheers!

When you get a PM, the forum sends you an email. ANy replies to that email (which I think is what happened) would not go to anybody.

Thank you for finishing your turn so quickly, Tatjam. It's now Japa's turn, but because he's busy I'll ask Eoyabosan if they want to play again.
You need to make an account on this site (http://dffd.bay12games.com/) and upload your save there. Then post a link here so the next player can download the save.

Added you to fort 1. In fact, you can play next if you want, Japa is probably too busy to plat after Tatjam.

Hmm, okay. You can play it on the newest version, I guess, as long as it works. We were still playing the old version just because updating to the newest version was unnecessary. DFhack is crashy in the newest version, though. If you have problems, please tell so alexs can maybe try uploading the save again.

Title: Re: Parallel Fortresses Succession Game. | It's happening! (again)
Post by: Paddywagon Man on June 07, 2016, 07:20:52 pm
It all started during a drunken stupor in the Mountainhomes, as all things dwarven do. I'd been hobnobbing with the Grand Marshal, eyeing one of those cushy desk jobs the nobles get, when the conversation turned to the topic of colonies. Colony defence, to be precise.

Turns out we've been losing fortresses at an aboslutely shameful rate - seems like all it takes for a colony to fall these days is a blob of old snow or farts or something with a long-ass name to pop up through the caverns and rout the booze-addled morons that made the fortress their home. As the Marshal complained, I in my drunkenness made the mistake of bringing up a promotion.

So now I'm being sent to one of our far-flung fortresses - Buttclench or some such - as "Military Inspector". I have no idea what to expect, but the stories I hear about fortresses have me pissing in my boots. You see, I may have exaggerated my military accomplishments in my resumè - I haven't the foggiest idea of how to train a militia, wouldn't know a forgotten beast from a Kakapo, and I sure as Hell aren't cut out for life in a fortress.

But it's too late, the wagon's pulling in, and I can smell the place already. I hope that when I release this diary, I'll be sipping sunshine on a pig iron throne in my cozy Mountainhome lounge, but Armok is a cruel god. I feel this fortress will be my grave.

End first page, Diary of "Paddywagon" Stinthademal, Military Inspector of Workclench

I do apologize for taking the save hostage and disappearing for months at a time without explanation. I feel really bad about it, but I've been working at my new job and I haven't had time for much of anything, let alone playing DF and posting on the forums. The only thing i can do to make up for it is to finish what I signed up for. So here is the save (http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=12173).

I have the write up mostly fleshed out and ready to go along with pictures, so expect them to be up within the next few days.

Well, I guess I've now read the in-depth storylines of both forts.

...xub313's graphs need to be updated, for one, but it was bit helpful in what to expect/which to read first. For one, it helped me find that I am indecisive in what I want.

And read it I did. Not every page but rather the updates.....And even that took a long time! Not unexpected with ...what, 17 years I guess of succession fort.

Spoiler: Fortress1 (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Fortress2 (click to show/hide)

It's....The differences are....Each overseer may have their own character, yet new years do not result in as much of a mess as I've thought of succession forts, even if they result in about as much of a mess as I've come to expect. The changes echo years down the line and change the history. Origamiscienceguy's start is still affecting the present 7 years later in myriad ways, and the decipherable pattern reveals a bit about the nature of succession forts everywhere, even with the stated goal of differentiating the fortresses.

26 dwarves died and 2 were born during my short reign. We also killed a few trolls, boars, giant chinchillas, and cave crocodiles, but I regretfully lost the sheet I was keeping track of numbers on. Created wealth went up by about 7.1 million dwarfbucks. Morale went down a bunch, good luck to my successor...

The total number of dead at the end of my reign is 498.

I would love to play another turn! Having downloaded the most recent save file, however, it unfortunately seems that my poor flimsy laptop can't run the fort at any more than three measly frames per second, so I'm going to have to turn it down.

Workclench was a fine fortress, and I'm proud to have left my mark on it in the form of a giant sacrificial pyramid on the surface and a horribly mangled demon covered corpse in the depths. It is sad to see the fortress end by FPS death alone, however. If only some kind soul with a beefier computer would come and invite the circus to town to give the fort a proper seeing off...

Can confirm (error with both 7zip extraction from rar and Dwarf Fortress giving an error). Also, it is only 5.9 MB when last fort 2 save was 17.6 - don't think the forts have diverged that much.

Shit, I'll try reuploading it.

Also, Japa, you can try playing on version 42, it should work. Fortress 2 was fine when the save was moved from v. 40 to v. 42.

Edit: Now it should work! Link. (http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=12331)

Japa has cancelled his turn, so the game is now finished. Thank you for playing, everyone, and thank you origamiscienceguy for letting me be the GM!

I'll write a wrap up post when I have time.
