I've had no better luck with this game since I started playing it again. Once, I died to radiation while managing to drink every cansiter I had except the Rad-Away ones.

Hah. I'm gonna get back into this game. Iit is awesome.

I won. I suppose I got some lucky drops and mutations but everything counts. No tribble farming. Details and possibly some tips in spoilers.

• The winning character

  A lvl 16 psion. Selected for their high natural skill in swords and mutant powers. An optimised +3 Lightsaber cuts down anything it seems. A very lucky drop from a monster at the bottom of the sewer, as I had not discovered one before. I had to enhance it myself, dropped as debugged +0. I have found Lightsabers as early as the room I spawned in. I found 75 HP and 26 AC sufficient to survive the endgame, but I had Regeneration to heal my wounds. As you might suspect, a Lightsaber can parry many ranged attacks; at least Laser Pistols, Laser Rifles, Phasers, Pea Shooters and Blasters; possibly ray guns and projectile weapons.
• Sick, unfair combo

  Telepathy and Mental Blast will make this game so easy. Mental Blast can be used at anything in range, regardless of obstructions, such as walls and closed doors. Telepathy finds you the targets it works against. Better yet, if you use it on a monster who has not seen you yet, they will not even respond. Does not work on every monster, but it makes many encounters trivial.
• Foresee the trouble

  Telepathy has a long range and identifies many enemies who might give you trouble giving you time to respond. Telepathy works just as well in the dark too. Combine with X-ray Vision for seeing a short distance through walls and doors. No more surprises just behind the corners or the closed doors. X-ray Vision also makes finding secret doors very simple.
• Eliminating the clock

  Acquire a Radiation Processor and the Restoration mutation if possible. With these two you can recover from any and all damage you might take, given time. Rushing things seems the most likely cause behind YASD moments. I am uncertain if the Recognizers I encountered at the early levels once were just an unlucky spawn or a result of dallying though. They are not very impressive. Most of my characters have died either from Strength or Constitution loss, by poison attacks or radiation sickness.

  • Floppy Disk of Identify (FDoI)

• CAUTION; Radiation, the creeping death; knowing this stuff makes the game significantly easier but will most likely spoil a lot of your fun finding out yourself.

  • The following will irradiate you: carrying around Mutagen and Gamma Ray Guns (GRG); quaffing Mutagen; possibly  standing on the tile with Mutagen, GRGs and vats; spending time in most parts of the Gamma Caves and in certain rooms; radiation traps. There might be more, such as being hit by a GRG, but I am not sure.
  • Avoiding radiation: Geiger counter will click when around radiation; vats, mutagen and ambient radiation all trigger it; presumably GRGs too. Never rest in a room that you are not certain to be safe, corridors (outside of Gamma Caves) are safe from radiation, unknown if the doorway to an radioactive room is safe or not. Identify all ray guns by zapping them at something (other than yourself). Mutagen is trickier because quaffing unidentified canisters might kill you instantly (Antimatter), better stash them till you get your hands on some FDoI. If you wear a Radiation Suit (random type of jump suit, use a FDoI), you should be immune to all radiation except quaffing Mutagen and the Sludge from a vat.
  • Curing radiation: You might get lucky quaffing from a vat, but it is more likely just make things worse. Rad-Away works wonders, but is rather rare. You can pay the robo-doc ($200) in the Robot Town (lvl 8 ) to cure radiation; 5th option if you have no other ailments than radiation sickness and do not have a Babel Fish to understand its speech; robo doc also sells restoration service ($200) to cure the CON damage but I do not remember which option it is. The Radiation Processor implant seems to be the best option, if you can find one as it will constantly cure you of radiation, even radiation sickness if you already have it; just have restoration handy if it did not work fast enough, such as after drinking Mutagen in Gamma Caves.
