I've been playing a bunch of ADOM recently. Figured I'd do a let's play of it and make things more interesting.
What's ADOM?
ADOM stands for Ancient Domains of Mystery. It's a roguelike, similar to Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup or Nethack or Dwarf Fortress. It's got the dungeon crawling class based gameplay of DCSS, but has an open world similar to Dwarf Fortress. Also there's lots of ways to die.
What's the plot?
The Coming of Chaos
-------------------
For 6000 years, the world of Ancardia was left untouched by the
incursions of Chaos, but finally the sinister forces of evil and
darkness have found this young and teeming world. In a remote
mountain complex, huge dungeons were formed by great magical powers.
They seem to contain some kind of dimensional gate which allows
terrors from unknown dimensions to enter the world of Ancardia and
wreak havoc.
For years, nobody understood the true cause of sudden ambushes by evil
monsters, incursions by hideous monster armies, and the rising tide of
Chaos. Finally Khelavaster, the great sage, uncovered an ancient
prophecy foretelling the Coming of Chaos -- a dark and sinister time
when the skill, power and valor of a single hero would determine the
future of the world. The ancient scrolls of prophecy hinted at a
remote mountain range -- the Drakalor Chain -- which was destined to
be the final battle ground for an epic fight between Chaos and Order.
Khelavaster quickly made this known to all the intelligent races of
Ancardia.
Within weeks, many heroes set out to find the source of the chaotic
forces and destroy it. Khelavaster was among the first to enter those
dungeons. Many heroes have followed him since then but no one has
ever returned from the dungeons. Thus the forces of Chaos continue
their conquest and threaten to defile Ancardia...
You are one of those young heroes willing to risk your life to defeat
the forces of Chaos, gain fame, fortune, power, and ultimately save
your world and your people. After weeks of arduous travel, you have
finally reached the center of the Drakalor Chain and now face the
entrance to those dungeons of mystery which must contain a means to
save your world. You were told to visit a small village by the name
of "Terinyo" and talk to the village elder for he might have the
latest information about the region. Steady yourself and be prepared
to engage in a heroic struggle for the fate of your home world!
How do I submit characters for you to play with, Spehss?
Excellent question,
non-existent audience! Just make a post with a name, race, class, and gender. Gender choices are standard binary "are you a boy or a girl" stuff. Gender does play a slight role in a player's starting stats. Male gets +1 strength, female gets +1 dexterity. Races and classes are more interesting.
You can probably tell what's what if you're at all familiar with fantasy tropes. Humans are humans, dwarves are dorfs, high elves are (ugh) elves, gray elves are (ugh) more elves, mist elves are (ugh) ghostly super-elves, dark elves are drow and are kinda cool, orcs are orcs, trolls are
4channers ugly monster-people with huge regen and huger muscles, you get the idea.
Ratlings are rat-people. They're specialty is item...stuff.
Drakelings are lizard people. They can spit acid.
Hurthlings are hobbits but with a weird name.
Fighters hit things with swords, duelists hit things with swords but fancily, barbarians are illiterate barbarians, archers shoot, wizards wizz, necromancers raise the dead, etc.
Beastfighters are barbarians that punch people in the face. Also still illiterate.
Mindcrafters are psions.
Farmers are basically peasants. They get class powers letting them carry more, and they start with a pet dog and a pointy stick.
Merchants are like the merchants in game, but not as overpowered. At character creation they get some random items of a type (scrolls, potions, rings, etc) and will identify any of these items they find on ther journey. Also they can throw gold like ninjas throw throwing stars.
Chaos Knights are the anti-heros. They start with heavy armor and a huge-ass twohander. Also they start with some corruptions (like mutations in DCSS) and are always extremely chaotic (C-). Lots of people don't like chaos knights and will refuse to help them. This can lead to some...interesting challenges in game.
If you're an ADOM veteran, you probably know some combos that will either work really well or make me suffer terribly. If you're not familiar with the game, pick whatever and watch me splat it against the metaphorical wall.
Let's get ready to die, Bay12!
