Some time ago, I predicted Tunnelwound would be the Last Great Fortress of version 40d, and with a revolutionary new release of DF just around the corner I expect at least one or two of those words is correct. Tunnelwound is not the greatest fortress since the z-axis was created, far from it, but I expect there won't be a whole lot more like it before the release of DF2010.
I was going to make a long, epic story about it with adventurers coming to the great fortress of Tunnelwound years after it was abandoned and slowly finding about the history and everything, but I'm a lazy bastard, so no story time. Sorry. Here's the map archive and some pictures. Some of the pictures were taken when I first started the fort (and have been posted somewhere else at least once, but its nice to have everything in one place), some were just taken today.
The plateau is 100 z-levels above the valley floor, give or take a couple.

Arright, now I'm gonna take a break from DF for a little bit.

I finished the doomsday device, a rocketish device set to plunge into the magma pit. I just did a test run (on a separate save) and it works beautifully. When the new version arrives, I'll order it to be filled with provisions and some sleep pods (may do it now, unless the fire snakes destroy them), order everybody inside (recruit if I have to), retract the gantry bridges, and pull TEH LEVER.
So, lets go out in glory with the old version :)

Haven't had a goblin siege in at least a decade, guess they ran out of goblins. I was trying to kill off the elf and human traders so they'd siege me, but that never happened. The Barbican has yet to actually be used.
