aw ye its time for some vidja

I've been developing two video games for some time. Both of them are made in RPG Maker XP with different scriptsets, and both are video game spinoffs of forum games. Neither are released yet (except for a buggy demo that you don't want to play), but I expect to have something playable for both in the coming months. Progress of the games will be tracked here without cluttering up the forum game threads.

TWoOtABorn

TWoOtABorn is the official spinoff game of my long-running suggestion game, The Warrens of Oric the Awesome (see sig). It's based off the Pokemon Essentials scriptset for RMXP (though it will be modified to remove all references to the Pokemon universe). In this game, you play as Al, a womanizing vampire whose "Soul Star," the Illborn Exchange, lets him capture and command "Illborn," the monsters in the Warrens. The first release will contain all of Dungeon Level 2 and a limited implementation of the Underside. There will be several Illborn to catch, as well as a few hidden ones, and plenty more to fight. As this game takes place several cycles before the forum game, we will not be encountering Proxxy, Riltia, or any other cycle-dependent characters. This will keep the story and characters fresh.

FEF2XP is based on the FEXP scriptset that was long since abandoned. I've taken to adding some content to the scriptset while making a game based on Haspen's FEF2. There are two games in one here as, in addition to the FEF2 story, there's a much harder non-canon story acting as an unofficial direct sequel to Haspen's FEF1.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the engine, there are no battle animations, and all battles take place on the map, making the video game much more like the forum game.

FEF2XP is less likely to be of interest to the forum overall, considering TWoOtA's much, much larger readership.

Progress: Chapters 0, 1, 2, Intermission 1, 1A, and 2A are complete. They have missing some content, and there are plenty of bugs, but there they are. The next update will include chapters 2x, 2xx, and 3A.

This demo release of FEF2XP contains:

There's still plenty of content missing from these chapters. If you find any bugs, please report them! Even the smallest bug is relevant. I'm compiling a list of known bugs every release.

C: Confirm
D/Enter: Menu

X: Cancel/Skip dialogue

Spoiler: Known bugs (IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ) (click to show/hide)

*The bottom two weapon levels cannot be hovered over on the stat screen.
*IF YOU PLAY ON MORE HARDER MODE AND KILL OR FAIL TO RECRUIT CANDY, CHAPTER 2 WILL NOT WORK PROPERLY.
*Skipping dialogue at the start of Dea Historia may cause the level to load improperly.
*Sakura's Witch of the Wood doesn't seem to work properly.
*Characters without items work erratically and crash the game in some circumstances.
*Dance is incomplete, as is Canto. It also gives no EXP, so Candy is stuck at level 1. The next release will include Alec the bard, so I expect performances to be fixed by then.
*Dea Historia still starts when beating the Prologue with all but Irene dead, even though it's now been added to the main menu.
*Occasionally, battles will not end when achieving their victory conditions.
*Opening the menu right after achieving victory may crash the game.
*The level up screen may not show the right numbers. It also does not display CON properly.
*Sara/Irene's C support conversation doesn't account for dead units in the current battle.
*Grifen's Brew is incomplete but usable. If you use it after moving Grifen, it may crash the game.
*Visiting the house in Chapter 1 doesn't remove the Visit event, but it does nothing after the first visit.
*Thick Forest cannot be entered.
*Poison might not be working properly.
*You should not be able to move the cursor around after using a healing item. If this happens, recenter on the user and press Wait. I think this is Canto-related.
*Powdery brews and other items sometimes do not run out. I DON'T KNOW WHY THIS IS HAPPENING
*Plenty of things lack proper descriptions. Notably, almost all classes and very many items.

It has come to my attention that Fezz and Grifen are appearing on turn one. While one player has reported success, that's much too difficult, even for this game. There is now a hotfix for this (right click > save link as) in the post. (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=148547.msg6042211#msg6042211) You'll have to start from a new game for this patch to work.

EDIT: If anyone gets a crash at the end of Chapter 1, please let me know. It may just be the known pressing-buttons-after-victory bug, but it's very elusive.

Your hotfix dun work for me; Fezz and Grifen appeared at turn 1 and I downloaded&started da game 20 minutes ago.

The brew bug has been fixed for the next release.

Are you sure you started a new game after replacing Map007.rxdata in the Data folder?

Edit: Just tried the fix and it's working on my end.

TWoOtABorn is progressing nicely. 11/18 rooms have been finished for DL2, and plenty of events and Illborn have been added. There will be a limited selection of obtainable Illborn in Episode 1, but the choices will expand drastically in Episode 2.

One issue I had when filling out the 150+ Illborn was the distinct lack of enemy variety in TWoOtA itself. For example, the known enemies of DL2 are Wisp, Big Wisp, Scanbot, Searchbot, and Cleaner. In the forum game, this is largely a sanity saving measure as players can blow through enemies and floors fairly quickly when it's updating, but in the video game, each floor has enough content to fill an entire "episode" (game update).

There was one other Pokemon-based series that had this problem: Touhoumon. Even Touhou's gargantuan cast wasn't enough to fill all the Pokedex slots. Their solution was the addition of two to six "forms" for each character, starting from Chibi and branching off into Evolved, Attack, Defense, Speed, Technical, and Advent. Nearly every puppet had a Chibi and Evolved form accessible through the normal methods, but you could find evolution stones (or Touhou's equivalent) to branch off your Chibi puppet to its other forms.

TWoOtA will be stealing this neat mechanic. In the Dark Cathedral, you can sacrifice your beloved evolved Illborn to create Attack, Guard, Technical, or Special essences. These Essences can be used to evolve Illborn that have not yet reached their normal Evolved form. Most alternate evolutions have not been seen in TWoOtA, but the Special Essence cameos may look familiar.

I look forward to seeing the interesting team combinations this feature results in. The main boss battle of Episode 1 was finished today, and it contains some of the variants that will become available in Dungeon Level 3.

In TWoOtABorn, the Arena is much more structured than its flagship counterpart. Rather than tossing you into the world of a famous hero, it's a place of its own that draws in fighters from across the multiverse. You'll fight in a very Pokemon Stadium-esque arena.

Lower ranks will pit you against fairly obscure heroes whereas higher ranks will feature video game superstars.

Much like the Chinpokomans games, you can grow useful items. However, unlike Chinpokomans, these flowers

• are not self-replicating (you have to find seeds through daily events and loot rewards)
• act as direct-use combat boosts rather than held items (think X Attack instead of Oran Berry)
• are tricky to grow -- since TWoOtA is a dungeon, there isn't much good soil, and there's little to no rainwater

There's lots of time-based events in TWoOtABorn. I hope it's interesting enough to keep people playing Episode 1 for a few days just to see all the events.

I doubt that's Proxxy, given how often the First Sibling is said to reset.

TWOOTABORN PROGRESS

More rooms have been finished. Progress has been very slow. I have about 5 room left and then the Arena battles. Most of the remaining work is polish, debugging, and finishing a few media assets.

The music of TWoOtABorn mostly comes from the great artists at freemusicarchive (http://freemusicarchive.org/) (a valuable resource), but I'll be creating the "character songs" (the unique intro songs that play when you talk to the Sinister Siblings and their battle songs that play when you fight them).

Yes and yes. Former is an unintentional bug, also known as a feature in this game.

hit the bottom-left-most spring on screen 2 until the top-left spring turns into a ring. This may take several tries. Use the top-left spring (now ring) to bounce over to the island. Step on the exit to the top then back off then back on again.

There's a dummy character on the left I forgot to remove that'll boost your levels by 5. If you've already beaten the game, ignore it and just talk to the topmost shadow.

Shut it Down can kill him because of an oversight, but where's the fun in that? Easily the hardest part of the game otherwise.

Freeformschooler, that was a singular experience.

To say you made that in two days, the combat (perhaps because it's more chaotic) was a lot more involving than in OFF, which I couldn't stand (and it's a shame, because the concept was so great, but it basically wasn't even a game.)

I eagerly await the release of TWoOtABorn.
