Title: Dwarfs!? - New casual indie game on Steam
Post by: Todestool on May 05, 2011, 05:56:00 pm
While I normally ignore any game on Steam that promotes itself as casual, the fact that this one has the audacity to compare itself to both Lemmings and Dwarf Fortress drew my attention.  I downloaded the demo, but I only had enough time this evening to play through the tutorials and one unimpressive effort at the tower defense game mode.
First impressions: It isn't really a puzzle game, so the comparison to Lemmings falls short.  It seems like you could get a level of anarchy almost meriting Dwarf Fortress levels, but this is mostly because your ability to direct your dwarves is minimal, and the Dwarves themselves are considerably stupider than DF's own.  It felt like watching an ant farm where the ants don't care if they find food, enemies, or deadly magma.  Still, I haven't tried all the game modes yet.

I'm enjoying it so far.  It gives me a lemmings vibe mostly due to the "OMG WHAT DID YOU JUST DO!?!" feeling.   :)

Not to be mean Todestool, but... the topic that links to was barely on the second page when you made this one!

To be fair, that topic was started back in March.
Also, to be fair about this game, it's not really worth the money*, because the gameplay breaks down like this, as far as i can tell from watching (horribly played) game videos on youtube:
*
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You have 2 types of units:
The one thing both types have in common is that they have no sense of self-preservation. This is the "Lemmings" aspect of gameplay. Like Lemmings, you get to play baby-sitter to the short, ignorant fools to stop them from killing themselves by using the few tools you're given. Tools like TNT to create a hole**, destroyable built walls, reinforced natural walls, and yes, Military dwarves. Unlike Lemmings, the list of tools you're given is obviously far shorter then that of Lemmings.
**
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Enemies are basically of "Kill you" and "Kill you faster then the last kind" variety and seem to be far smarter then your dwarves are, because they move towards your HQ to destroy it. Only really killable by military dwarves.

Actual gameplay revolves around managing not the stupid non-military dwarves, but the arrows on the ground. This is the mistake i keep seeing in the youtube videos, where people try to micro every dwarf, when it's simply not possible to. You put an arrow on the ground, and the dwarf follows it as a command. That's all you have to do, it's basically a top-down lemmings; arrows are blocker lemmings, that force the other lemmings to move in another direction. (in side-scrolling the only direction is reverse, but in top-down the effect is "walk in the direction indicated")

Have the most effective arrow layout to keep your retarded, non-military dwarves from wandering off and causing trouble by keeping them in a large holding-pattern loop of arrows; where they spend most of their time doing nothing but walking. Meanwhile, keeping your military dwarves in their own respective holding loops or attached to gaurd rooms or whatever so you can keep your military response times low. Keeping a few micromanaged idiots digging only where you want them to dig, so when they inevitably fuck up and hit water or magma or enemies, you can respond appropriately without getting shafted too hard.

TL:DR
That's all you have to do in the game to win it, manage the lemmings' dwarves' movement. Pay 10 dollars for a rehash theme changed featureless cut down aerial view Lemmings.

You could do this shit in Game Maker 6.

Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHkUox-XY44) is a youtube video of why you MUST keep your retarded dwarves "idle" in a holding loop instead of "idle" digging up huge areas of the map, because you literally lose control by lack of containment (of liquids)

[edit - spoiler tags work better then size tags, durrr]

So it's somebodies attempt at taking the phrase "Dumbed down for consoles" to the extreme by taking one of the smartest games for pc, and making it lemmings without the puzzles?

In a sense yes, because there is no 'safe exit' out of the map for any of your lemmings dwarves. The only reason to keep a dwarf alive is to either have a powerful military dwarf or three to handle threats, and to save time not having to march out his replacement -- except you inevitably march out his replacement anyways because they all die horrifically easilly.

Really, the only goal and puzzle is a high score. The over-arching puzzle is how you'll get that high score; except that puzzle doesn't exist because you can avoid all the difficult parts. Visualize a rubic's cube with under 5 randomizing moves made on it, or a sliding block puzzle that starts two slides away from a completion. The "strategy" to solve the high-score puzzle can literally consist entirely of micro-managing every non-military dwarf that spawns immediately out to a far-flung ore patch, while your more controllable military dwarves mine the nearby ones. Then you just prep every nearby cave for containment from the cash you get and order back the retard dwarves before they kill themselves by unleashing hell.

Retard dwarves are under your control, military dwarves are useful while not fighting, water/magma/enemies not obliterating you, etc. All the difficulties arn't really difficulties... But you could still fail to get a high score in time simply because the random map generator fucked up by not putting enough cash on the map, or enough close by to mathmatically keep yourself going (playing optimally, but still at a net loss) and such.

It's not a DF copy or anything, it has dwarfs and magma. That's it.

I like it, it's a good casual game to jump on for 5 minutes or so and have a go.
Title: Re: Dwarfs!? - New casual indie game on Steam
Post by: Max White on May 06, 2011, 05:27:00 am
Well, it is a top down micromanagement game that gives you indirect control of a small population, and your primary objective is the survival of this population by handling problems such as food supplies, water levels, and invaders. It also has noticeably simplistic graphics, so much so that they are hard to read if you are not accustom to such games.

Now there are several games I could be describing here, DF being one of them. I'm sure that this game took other influences aswell! But the fact that this game adds another layer of similarities by making it a population of dwarves, and has what is almost a trademark of DF, magma, it makes me wonder maybe the developers were trying to ride on Toady's coat tails.
Title: Re: Dwarfs!? - New casual indie game on Steam
Post by: Briggsy16 on May 06, 2011, 05:32:46 am
In the five or so games I've played I've never handled food supplies?

I think it's clear to see that from the similarity of magma and dwarves there is barely any other DF-ness in this game. I'm sure it took inspiration from DF but to say it's a dumbed down copy is just.. well dumb.

This game doesn't own dwarves you know? Other games are allowed to use them.
Title: Re: Dwarfs!? - New casual indie game on Steam
Post by: Max White on May 06, 2011, 05:50:49 am
Well no, DF does not own dwarves and magma and indirect control of your units. Why I was enjoying all these features in Dungeon Keeper II before DF came into existence, but that was a very different game. In threw you into a personified role, something DF does not do, it gave you clear objectives, something DF doesn't come close to doing, and it had a very different visual style.

But I ask you, Briggsy16, look past the dwarves, and the magma, and see that those are not the only evidence of dwarfness. For example, why was this specific art style chosen? It is very simplistic and symbolic, just like dwarf fortress. Now they could have had any number of reasons for making their game in this way, but you must concede that trying to wish on the same star that bought DF it's fan base is a possibility.

The simplistic art work because it's a simple game maybe? How is it symbolic?
Title: Re: Dwarfs!? - New casual indie game on Steam
Post by: Max White on May 06, 2011, 06:11:41 am
Do you see how we can understand how the very simple images relate to more complex concepts? That blue line of squares, approaching and retreating upon a wall of yellow, and retreating again? We can see that, and despite the fact that it does not resemble a beach at all, we can understand through symbolic colours and moment what is being portrayed.

Symbolism is ripe within games, and not just the type that your English teach drones on about.

So you've answered the question with a riddle, excellent.

How is the artwork in this game symbolic? Answer it properly.

The simplistic graphics hearken back to a more primitive time, when we were still running around in caves drawing on the walls in very simple linear symbols.

Food supplies? There was an update I missed or are you just talking about a game you haven't even played? If you even play this for 5 min and you still compare it with DF you clearly never played DF.

Thank you ein, as much as that wasn't the exact point, but derived from it.

I did answer your question, Briggsy. A blue square symbolises water, a yellow for sand. Blue is symbolic of water. This type of symbolism has been used since before anybody alive on this earth was born. But regardless, how the game presents itself is irrelevant as to why it chooses this form. Did it choose it because it wanted to embellish days long gone and summon a sense of nostalgia, or because somebody else was already doing that, and doing it very well?

The graphics are decent and simple. They aren't nostalgic as they aren't in that style.

Have you played this game?

Well no, I could not give a sock! I did watch the lp though. The point that you enjoy dancing around is the other mark similarity, instead praying on that sole distinction. The point still stands, regardless of if they must eat or not.

Away from the pointless arguing a bit, I figure this will soon be $2.50 during a steam sale, will it be worth a look at then?  I realize its not DF, but would it be a fun puzzle game to get 2.50 worth out of?

Also a small rant:  It seems to be a constant that every game that comes out that includes dwarves or is slightly like DF the topic about it dissolves into flames and bile on why its not as good as DF.  (this, goblin camp, etc)  Gotta say this is getting sad folks, DF is a very oddball game and the work of years.  Comparing other stuff to it is always going to be apples and oranges.  Any independent developer like this who manages to bring a game out deserves to have the thing judged on its own merits rather than being held up against something like DF.

Get the demo, I say. It is too much arcade for my taste. Really all you do is 1) encase water and lava so it can't get out and 2) train warriors to kill the rare, rare invader and 3) direct dwarves towards the good loot. All these 3 things can be done in one to three clicks.

Its funnier when you don't kill the bosses.  I had like a million spiders crawling all over my map because I ignored two spider queens.  :P

I also found out exactly why I shouldn't use my veteran lvl 10 axe-dwarfs to do exploratory mining when I lost all 4 of them to water flood.  Haha!

Hehe B12 trolling/troll bait pretty darn close to as ideal as you can get.

I need to download the demo for this and give it a whirl this weekend. I remember liking it well enough before and it sounds like there's some new stuff since I played last.

Hallo all my name is Robin and I'm one of the two developers of dwarfs!?.
This is my first time on the forums and I happened to hear there was some talk of the game.
So to clarify some of the things about the game :).

First we never intended to do a rip-off of dwarf fortress our game is in its base an arcade game about points. DF is an awesome dwarf simulator strategy thingy.
The comparison was a mistake from our publishers part and we apologize for that. It was spouse to say Dungeon keeper 2. I had some time said "it's sort of a little bit like DF as it has lava and dwarves".
So an minor error we don't think Dwarfs!? and DF are the same we did not want to sell them game on DF name. Using a reference is just a good way to try to explain a game to people who has never played it. I hope you all can forgive us for our error with the mixing up DF and DK2. So also here is some free keys for the games so you can all try it out and see that we are not ripping off the game.

And yes these are steam keys so to use them you need to go to the game tab and them activate product.

Wow, I really hope you are one of the developers and not a guy who took the keys from somewhere and gave us. Hehe, joking.

Thank you kindly for your presents! I am sure many of us dwarves like the Dwarfs a lot. I personally really enjoyed it.

Heh, Dwarfs?! I played sandbox more than the rest of the game put together.

I really wish there was the option to turn off the rage modes for bosses, it gets annoying when you're trying to breed an awesome spider army and the spider queens start hopping like mad and killing the other ones.

You are awesome man. I was curious about this game and wanted to try this out. Thanks.

:o
You sir, are a saint, or insane.
He's a true dwarf for being both.

EDIT:
The people that complain about it being too DF-like to be at ripoff status are just being asshats. Tried it out, and both games play differently (not that it's a bad thing). But really people, do research before you bash; or at least let things take their course. Not a fan or curious about something? Then don't pay attention to it. Simple as that.

EDIT EDIT:
Now for anyone that tries to steal the source code for DF and pass off their own from the original game as a base (and I'm not referring to Total Conversion Mods like the Wastelands mod for example), expect rage from everyone including the almighty Toady One himself. Plus, replicating DF even at it's basest element will still take a considerable amount of time, especially looking back at when the first releases were, and how many had been released since then up to it's present version with tons of trial and error over the course of the releases.

If something is ever a rip off, it would have to be damn close to what the product it's ripping off is. Dwarfs?! plays like an arcade (more like some of the classic DOS games of olde. Lemmings level of fun, I would compare it to), Dwarf Fortress is a fantasy world generator which also happens to be a very elaborate sandbox.

You didn't have to show anything, in fact. People who said that didn't even read about your game, and they were just a few.

I'm not sure if anyone checked their homepage today but... jeeze (http://www.dwarfs-game.com/). I have never seen such an elaborate apology over a perceived slight. Not that this isn't an incredibly cool thing to do Nomet, because it is, but I didn't think there were really any hard feelings between Bay12 and Dwarfs!? to begin with. There are just a couple folks on this forum who cry bloody murder whenever they see another game with dwarfs or...digging. Because Toady invented those things.

Anyway, it doesn't change the fact that this is an awesome thing to do. Going to try out the game right now.

Screeny of what I'm talking about for posterity (http://i53.tinypic.com/9aw8ox.png).

I'm actually worried about what Kinseti is saying. Are we so bad reputation wise as a community that an indie dev had to try to appease the more loud members with free stuff?

That's not a very good feeling to have.

Well, I feel a little less bad that they did a similar thing for Facebook and another place before us. That was nice of them too :) I'm hoping more people will try this game now, I certainly have (my first game was fun because it ended with half of my dwarves dead).

Screeny of what I'm talking about for posterity (http://i53.tinypic.com/9aw8ox.png).

EDIT: Fixed derp broken link

Nah, it's obviously that Toady invented games. And air, don't forget the air!  :P

I'm actually worried about what Kinseti is saying. Are we so bad reputation wise as a community that an indie dev had to try to appease the more loud members with free stuff?

That's not a very good feeling to have.
I'm kind worried now too, after reading the previous posts that might have caused this.

I believe there is one post saying it's a rip off, and the rest are telling the OP that he is wrong, along with other DF players.

Game's pretty fun. Just a few thoughts, I can imagine giant antlions would be a terrible surprise for dwarves to randomly face as a boss character, and would have to kill them off in a manner similar to how ants take on antlions (overwhelming force is best). Having random events occur like sinkholes would also hamper some arcade play once in awhile (dug out tiles all of a sudden become pits), running into ant colonies (or fire ant colonies) would also be a rather unpleasant surprise to dig into as well. Another boss idea could also be a sandworm/giant earthworm.

I dunno. Just got through the tutorial, so I don't know how many of those already are implemented or not.
Title: Re: Dwarfs!? - New casual indie game on Steam
Post by: Aklyon on July 30, 2011, 05:50:07 pm
Sandworms would be interesting if the dwarves were digging in a desert...
Title: Re: Dwarfs!? - New casual indie game on Steam
Post by: Itnetlolor on July 30, 2011, 06:13:29 pm
Well, with the earthworms, they would be particularly nasty beasts since they can eat both rock and dirt blocks as they move and can compromise some blocking of water or lava caves, however, their weakness is that they can only keep traveling in un-dug dirt tiles, meaning you'll have to trap them in exposed tiles before you can kill them off. Sandworms could be similar, except they're actively hunting other dwarves and are invisible until it's too late and can (exclusively) travel dug out tiles. Unlike earthworms though, they can't go through solidified rock walls.

Sandworms would be an especially nasty surprise since you are not notified about exposing a cave with them, so you'll have to keep a close eye on opening new caves as you play, and treat them with equal levels of paranoia as you would with lava or water. I think they would require at least 5 warriors or a few lvl 3< warriors to take them on.

That said I'm a big fan om building things that last as well. Deep and advanced strategy games is one of my favorite genre. So there might be some updates with a Dwarfs!? mode more focused on building and less on chaos control.

heres an idea i just thought of.

How about poison gas you could find in caves that spreads to a certain amount, then stops and just hovers around, but to remove it you would have to train a special dwarf or something and he could remove each block of poison gas very slowly? That might add atleast -some- more depth to the game.
Also, how about a building that could be built thats like a refinery, that you could upgrade and increases the amount of gold you get per mineral?

When I saw some of the posts on the Steam User Forums from people claiming that "Dwarfs!" and "Delve Deeper" were ripping off Dwarf Fortress for them all sharing some generic fantasy themes I wanted to rage punch my computer screen.

Yeah this is an awesome game, and I'm definatly looking forward to the "building focused" mode if only to see how it turns out. My games always go well up until I have about fifty diggers running around and getting into trouble, usually ending with like three water/lava caves being opened simultainiously.

I know this is old but I just had to comment! This is horrible, I bet you haven't even played the demo when you said this. There are no food supplies, the art style is simple because it's an ARCADE GAME! It's not some fancy smancy game with bloom or cell shading 3D effects, it's simplistic. Water is blue because water is blue, it can be murky but it's blue. If dwarfs and magma was to be always referred to DF and everyone criticized a new game just because it has these then what is the point of making a new game? Give these guys a break, they made a small neat game that is fun to play when you only have 5 minutes to spare or just want to shut down communication and be alone for a bit.
Anyways sorry I quoted a old post but it was driving me crazy.

We felt like showing some respect here cause there was a lot of flame on our forum regarding Dwarfs!? being a "rip off clone using the fame of dwarfs fortress". We where hoping to show that we are nice guys who just love to make games. And we credited DF as something that inspired us not something we considered we ripped off.

We are soon going to announce the things we are working on. We where thinking of adding a video dev dairy to talk about the game development and why we make the decisions we make so all who is interested can see the development. But yes the new updates are not officially announced yet. The reason being that we don't want to promise something that we can't deliver. We want to know that we can keep the promises we give.
