Title: STEALTH WEREMAMMOTHS??!! - Now with +ART+
Post by: Dunamisdeos on July 24, 2014, 02:56:27 am
So, I get my second set of merchants from the mountainhomes. Suddenly, they start dying for no reason. They just start "being found dead". First, I thought bug.

Get it to bite your dwarves. Make them hunters to gain ambushing. Die horribly when full moon comes.

Wait, do werebeasts normally equip like that? The stealth is bad enough, but that steel war hammer...

Maybe it was one of the merchant guards, and just happened to hang onto the war hammer they already had in their hand?

I know I've seen some weird equipping mechanics when using a were-whatever Adventurer, where they continue to have their items on them without actually having them equipped.

Weremammoth seem like they would actually be useful, the only were creatures I get are things like rabbits.

I want you guys to understand that I never got any notification that this creature had entered the map. It killed an entire caravan without being spotted and then apparently disappeared without a trace.

There could be more, right now, anywhere and everywhere, stomping silently about and swinging enormous mammoth-sized warhammers with deadly quiet.

So, can you cage-trap were creatures? Because I've never had to deal with this level of lycanthropic fun before.

Well, for me the mighty were-badger is still the most dreadful of all creatures, but those Were-mammoths have developed some interesting strategies indeed. I think they rely on the "hey guy, there is a were-mammoth wielding a warhammer right behind you !" kind of jokes to remain unseen during their rampages. Nobody can seriously expect to have a were-mammoth wielding a warhammer right behind him.

BTW, no notifications when a stealth creature enters the map, even if it's a stealth mammoth.

Mwahahahahah, dwarves failed their spot checks.

But incidentally, all weapons in the game are standard sized. A warhammer wielded by a weremammoth is perfectly usable by a dwarf. This note is just to make sure you get the mental imagery right. The weremammoth tip-toes up behind the dwarf and bops it on the head with a teeny-tiny warhammer.

According to the wiki werebeasts in their beast form are trapvoid creatures, but I don't know if this was verified for .40.

I think this makes weres more interesting. Every time I get a were it would revert before having a chance to really do anything.

This is clearly the case. What does he eat? Has anyone ever seen him eat fruit, or leaves or anything? He is clearly carnivorous, and the reason that there are only puppets and a few humans on that show is HE HAS EATEN EVERYONE ELSE.

Oops Didn't mean to post here.

You are clearly the weremammoth (Snuffaluffagus) gathering intel. We are prepared, fool.

My current fort recently got a combat report of a Yak Bull fighting a Werelizard without an announcement, so something definitely seems to have changed with the new version. The report never mentioned anything about it attacking stealthily though, so I don't know if it was sneaking at any point.

Definitely adds a little more FUN to having a were-creature show up though.

I have a goblin werehedgehog who came to my fortress recently. She appeared from stealth at the top of my main stairshaft in werehedgehog form (I did not have traps set up at that point) and sat around there for a while, then turned into a friendly goblin (with tear stained eyes) and wandered around inside my fort for at least a month. Fortunately for the dwarves she only transforming one other time while in a remote part of the tunnels. The war dogs tried to attack her when she first came through the entrance as a freindly goblin (with both her and the dogs continually fleeing in terror), but my conscripted military would not attack. Eventually I mostly walled off the section she was in with a cage trap at the opening, which caught her while still in friendly goblin form.

Cage traps and an arena guarding the entrance. With luck, sieges will come during some creature's cycle and they'll get distracted for long enough to muster your army.

It reminds me of the D&D story about the guy who played as a bear, with all his points in the bluff skill and convinced everyone he wasn't a bear, except for one guy who called the bear out for being a bear, at which point the poor guy was taken away to the jails for offending one of the kings honored guests (the bear).

The Weremammoth is clearly doing the same thing, convincing people he isn't really a mammoth, because really, what sort of mammoth carries a hammer, right?
Followed by a sneaky *BONK* to the head when the victims guard is down...

There mammoth! There castle!

In all seriousness, I believe the only particularly dwarfy use for a werecreature which isn't a civ member is to pit it onto a pressure plate and use it to operate machinery once a month. A decontamination procedure for the well, maybe.

I want to try and test the benefits of running a all were-creature military, where the military is separated from the rest of the fort, but forces any visitors to path through the segregated mini-fort,
so you either get a regular dwarven welcoming party, or a sneaky-were-mammoth-silent-rave-with-hammers party.
Any wounds inflicted before the 'rave', are restored so that the 'rave' will go on forever, to the thumping sounds of Dwarven industrial techno.

I can't stop picturing my dwarfs as doing their everyday chores, all the while confidently dancing to hardcore techno club music, with unnecessary glow stick and fashion accessories.
I mean they already have alcohol, dark cramped spaces, questionable hygeine, interesting facial hair, they eat magical bright purple mushrooms, and only move in 'step' increments as if timing their actions to a silent beat....

Actually, no... when they transform to beast-shape, they gain the "trap immune" ability, so they stop activating the pressure plate.  When they go back to humanoid-shape, they regain the ability to activate a pressure plate.

This could be used as a method to keep were-aquatics alive in a holding area. You could tie the pressure plate to a method of flooding the chamber only when he transforms. I want a wereshark, you see.

The king of beasts is usually something no one expects to be as lethal as it is like carp or giant sponges. For a weremammoth, the game tells you to fear the night, so when one arrives you know it's lethal.

still, from this version's werebeast seems much more powerful than before.

This has changed. It has changed so hard. With the new calendar and such, they stay changed long enough to cause serious harm. They don't stand up to a trained military, but they will rip apart civilians and recruits with ease. Especially since they can learn combat skills.

Thats what I thought just now too, but, you see.. We're underestimating the stealth powers of the weremammoth.. It looks like the image is missing, but the problem is that its there and we're not perceptive enough to see it :(

So.. The weremommoths are the newest king of beasts now? o.o

Update on the specific Weremammoth in question: An accident in its containment led to the deaths of 46 dwarves. It was recaptured at the gates. I am quite sure that it is now a very skilled Weremammoth in terms of combat, and has become far, far more dangerous.

I have built a special vault for it deep under the earth. Here it will stay for eternity.

Until the next civilisation to come along digs to deep and to greedily also this is a great example of the starts dwarf fortress throws up

My suggestion is that it should serve as the first representative of your fortress to greet the HFS when the time comes. Just make sure its a full moon that day.

You can ensure this by setting up a containment area for it which will be opened by a pair of drawbridges (one leading to HFS, one to the fort) only after it has transformed and a second lever has also been pulled from inside the fort (so it doesn't escape early) Prepare the link between that sealed area and the mining tunnels first, unleash the HFS with no other way into the fort but to path through the were beast containment area, and then come the full moon the were beast will transform, the pressure plate holding the bridges will drop them, and you may witness glorious battle.

This is going to happen.

I was home sick from work today, and decided to try making art with my computer for the first time outside of MSpaint. I used to "do art" in high school, but it has been a long time since high school.

Anyway, I thought you guys might be interested in stealth weremammoth art.

I did a sketch in pen, because I cannot get too sidetracked from drawing an unrelated comic.

Oh no, they would 'spring from ambush' before.   Now they are ninjas.

Am I the only one to now imagine a Ninja suited Mammoth?

This reminds me of Ice Age 2 where the girl mammoth thinks she is a possum, and tries to be stealthy by holding a branch of grass over her head.

This is so beautiful. The way the third ninja is eyeing off the mammoth is brilliant.

Now kinda wonder if there's a player out there who lost a fort to a single ambusher silently picking off the fort.
Would they just chalk that up to Dying of Old age?

Third ninja? I thought they were mammoth feet. Now I can't decide how to see it.

Definitely Ninjas.  The mammoth's skills were so epic he got invited into the clan.  The guy to it's left just isn't really sure about this whole "Why isn't the house crashing down underneath us?" thing.

Or maybe he was a ninja before he became a weremammoth.
