I think location would be the best way to do it as well.  But it has to be made very clear what the dangers you will face.  How far away in the world various dangers are, and how interested they would be in you.

Yeah, I found shotguns stopped being so awesome once I hit people with armor.  The problem is to make melee really work, you have to have strong gals.  New recruits just don't have what it takes.  I need to train up my new recruits more.

I am also save scumming a LOT.  I should stop, but I am still learning and making tons of mistakes so I feel like it's okay.

I need to look at the research tree more, it's very random what you have to research sometimes (Wrench is one of the required researches that you need for workshop).

Progress!  I need to actually plan stuff out more.  So far, things I have discovered:

Shotguns are awesome
Knocking people out can be lucrative.
Attacking ninja's at night is a recipe for disaster.

I need to get camo stuff going at some point, and start making pirate ninja's who knock people out.  I also need to get another aircraft with a gun, none of my current ones do.

Also, how do I continue the drill/codex thing?  I chose green, but now I don't seem to have any other research options?

Where can I find sky ninjas?  I also made a mistake and overstretched myself, so I think I have to fire a bunch of brainers to get my costs down :(

I made the mistake of using all my rare earth elements before I researched them, and now I can't buy any.  How would I get more?

Also, what does a plantation do?  I bought one but I don't see any other production options, it said I could produce wheat with it?  Is it automatic?

How risky is making more bases?  Do I have to worry about attacks?

This game is pretty fun so far.  A lot of unexplained stuff, like what a WORKER does and what LIABILITIES are.  This game has a LOT of depth.

Thanks for all the advice everyone.  I was doing better, but my infamy somehow ended up at -1000?  I may have made a few mistakes.  I also learned that taking out civilian shipping will reduce your infamy as well... I just followed a ship, I didn't recognize what it was, and I landed in this weird place that had a shirtless guy that looked like a hippie.  I stopped playing, so we will see how that goes.

Yeah, I am playing on the second difficulty which I think is the default.  What missions can you skip without any penalties?  Is x-grog just for selling?

I tried getting into this, I forgot how hard the original X-COM is in general.  So far my strategy has been to ignore all missions and just focus on harassing various shipping, and by harassing I mean waiting for them to land then attacking them since I can't figure out how to get a ship with guns.  Every time I try to do a mission I end up getting curbstomped.  Also, what does it mean when it looks like a ghost is coming out of someones mouth after you stun them, versus the z's?  Also, is there any way to tie someone up to stop them from getting up again after you stun them?  I tried using a rope but all it let me do was attack them.  Maybe I am doing something wrong.

Anyway, game is hard and all the walkthroughs are for earlier versions that are much different.

Also of note, the steam version has a fan patch auto applied (which fixes some things) but also nerfs necromancers, so there is that.  It adds a duration for troops summoned by necromancers, which is sad.  I think I am going to go back to the original game and go all overpowered with my necromancer, swarming the enemy with thousands of skeletons as is it meant to be.

So I actually got warlords battlecry 3 because of this thread.  Fun-ish so far, but it's kind of oldschool in that the in-game help is abysmal.  Make sure you look some things up.

I really wish there were more games in this "genre", it's my favorite playstyle.

Yeah it's still being patched and upgraded.

Chances are there will be a patch released with the expansion that may fix some of the issues.  There is also a chance there will not be.
