WELCOME TO
AMBERJEWEL
the frozen wasteland
the wealthy tomb
Seeing as I have nothing better to do, I'm starting a succession fortress! Simple as that! Now, I know that other popular succession forts have some kind of thingy that something, but Amberjewel does not have that. It's vanilla DF. Well, I removed aquifers, but those are just an unnecessary pain in the butt.
I hope I've summarised everything that is vaguely important in the sections below. If anything is unclear, just remind me to clarify it.
I'm going to take my turn first, just to get everything started. I'll try to keep the OP relatively up-to-date.
I'm serious. Please remind me to do so.

THE RULES
because these are important
- Standard Spring - to - Spring turns, although this may change depending on any nonsense that occurs.
- You have TWO WEEKS to play your turn, unless there are regular, detailed updates. After the two weeks are up, you must upload the save for the next player.
- No intentional fort-annihilation. If you purposefully screw over the next player's turn, we're reverting to the previous save.
- The fort doesn't have to have any specific layout. You can build in whatever fashion you please.
- Narrative for your turn is (somewhat) mandatory. It doesn't have to be good, it just has to be there.
- Save files are to be uploaded to Dwarf Fortress File Depot (http://dffd.wimbli.com/) or similar site with a link IN THIS TOPIC, so I can make it easily-findable for everyone else.

Spring 90, writings of several unimportant dwarves
We finished walling off a piece of the cavern, and are now growing our food in it. It's still defenseless from the water side, though, we'll only wall that off when we succeed in melting some glacier ice.
http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/4508/cavernfarm.jpg
A dining hall, barracks with a separate room for executing caged enemies, and some living quarters are being excavated.
Migrants arrived, 24 of them. None of them altruistic males, but we got 3 guys with crossbows now, they are hunting the Yeti as we speak.
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/19/20thslate90migrants.jpg/
Also, one of them is very much suspected as a vampire. A pity, he's a Great Mechanic, Siege Operator and Siege Engineer.

Oh hell, it's my turn.
PaintedCrypts has to wait a few days more...
Good to see you continue this.
Also, I did some digging around in Legends Viewer, the goblin civ we have a fight with is low on manpower, but...
Populations
848 Goblins
41 Dwarves <--- so about 1 in 20? I'm curious wether or not they'll show up among attackers.
4 Dwarf Prisoners
1 Tortoise Devils <--- and it's not their law-giver anymore, but still alive and a member. Strange. Those sieges might get interesting.
1 Human Prisoners
Oh gawd, Bumble has a family? How can he tame yetis and live in caves with brats to care for... ;)
I'm afraid he can't, those dangerous tasty building-smashing lumps of fur are too smart to be domesticated. Which is a pity, they'd be potent war animals seeing how the combat with the vampire went.

1st Granite, 91
Dear Diary.
As the most sane person among this crowd I was chosen as the Overseer of this frozen hole in the middle of yeti-dwelled snowy planes. Just the best place I ever wanted to live in. That was sarcasm. And that was the most clever decision they ever made. "Cause I have urge to bring this place to glory and power, to make the name of AmberJewel thunder all across the land!
So, first my order should be - dig down and find us some warm magma!!! Period.
And you others - utilize that coal that piles in the garbage with dead lizards. No, I don't know why it is there.
3rd Granite
Miners dug into second cavern. Go on digging and seal all with walls. We do not care about cavern stuff, for now.
Also they struck cassiterite veins. If we find copper ore, we'd can armor our military in bronze! that's not bad, I think.
12th Granite.
Miners struck microcline.

... Feylers, mah love, can you please NOT announce me about EVERY boulder you dug there?! Thank you kindly.
12th Granite, Updated
WHOA! Feylers, that the great news!!! A spire of adamantine was found at the third cavern, it's more than 15 Urists high, as we can see, and who knows how deep it goes!! Feylers, my love.. we will be legendary rich!!
4th Slate, 91
Miners finally reached the magma sea. Now they are digging magma tank for our forges, and then we can start digging adamantine!
Other news, we're making artificial farm zone, and our weaponsmiths are making silver hammers, just to raise up their skill before starting adamantine work. Oh, I'm so exited about it, dear diary!
20th Slate
Dear Diary,
We have more migrants, 4 citizens and 4 children with them. Good, we suffer from lack of miners.
19th Felsite, 91
We've done with magma forges, and smelting every ore we have.
Elves came, I hope they have some sunshine for me. I miss it soooo much in this place... when we get rich, we will take baths of sunshine!
15th Hematite, 91
Diary, they had NO sunshine!!! and no sun berries either!
We took their other plants, wood and animals - emu and giant armadillo. Just for fun
First thing is first, Bp920091 heads to the room of the person who's been collecting all of the eggs from the egg laying birds in the fortress. A knock rings out. "Yes overseer" The dwarf replies. "First thing is first, I wish to congratulate you on your acquisition of such great egg-layers in a fortress that is on a glacier." A smile grows on the dwarf's face. "However, there are some inefficiencies in the egg-harvesting area that you have used. First off, why have you not utilized the Battery Farms concept of past forts and had a controlled area for egg-laying? A 1x2 room with a nest box and a door works wonders, for two main reasons.
First off, you can control the birds, so that you can have them lay eggs as FAST as possible (they have nothing else to do). Secondly, you can control your dwarves. Dwarves will (doing their job) collect eggs as fast as they possibly can, often when you do not want them to (as when you are trying to get a large number of birds for egg-laying).
As a result, I have had the miners dig out a proper battery farm setup, and move the birds into it as soon as it is dug out and you can get nest boxes/doors in each room. Additionally, we are going to keep whatever male birds that we have in that room, so that we can both contain them, and possibly cull them (we only need one male for breeding eggs after all). That is all that I have for you, get to it."
Bp920091 leaves the room, leaving the dwarf feeling a bit shaken, but reassured that he was doing things mostly right.
After this, Bp920091 went to the door of the head farmer. His door was open, and he was looking stressed as he was pacing throughout his room. "Do not fret, as I have come to make your job easier. We are not only going to expand the farms, but we are going to make it so that the seeds are no longer hundreds of levels above you. " "But Overseer" The dwarf said, with a pained look in his eye "Even with that problem resolved, we cannot keep hauling the plants up to that gigantic stockpile when we harvest them. We lose so much of the crop that way."
"Ahh" Bp920091 replied, "That was the second part of my plan, as I am going to direct the miners to create storage areas for the plants that you harvest, just one level above the plants. As a result, you are not only going to have increased farming space, but faster replanting times and faster food storage times." Again, a look of relief crossed another dwarf's face. "Carry out your duties quickly, as without you, we have no plants, and without plants, food is scarce and drink is nonexistent. Remember, the faster you work, the faster you get to drink!" With that, the dwarf stopped his pacing and sped down to the farming area.

Next up were the miners, and Bp920091 caught up to them when they were continuing to mine out the adamantine vein. She called them over and they stopped working, some looking relieved that they were going to stop mining the demon stone.
"First off, I wish to congratulate you on your exceptional job so far, as you have dug out one impressive fortress. You are going to stop mining this adamantine, and you are going to start mining for ore (after you finish renovations of course." "Renovations?" A dwarf said. "Yes, Renovations, as you are going to first redo the egg-laying network in the upper fortress. After that, work on the new seed-storage area, then orders will be given to you all. Keep up the great work."
With that, the miners meandered up off the massive staircase, no doubt wondering how far they were away from unleashing horrors below.
Bp920091 followed the miners, needing a chat with the head craftsdwarf, someone referred to as "Mad One" She found him working in the craftsdwarf's shop, making more flutes. "I need to speak to you, and it is about the setup that you have here." "More flutes, I must make more flutes, precious microcline" breathed the Mad One in a hushed tone. "If you listen to me, I can make sure that you can make more microcline flutes"
That got the Mad One's attention right away, his muttering stopping immediately, all attention on the overseer. "First off, we are going to rework the whole workshop area. You know how long you have to go to get those precious blue stones? Well, we are not only going to put them next to your workshops, we are going to rework them to be safe from harm. Ever hear of a dwarf getting an idea into his head and snapping as he cannot complete it?"
The Mad One nodded in agreement, fully aware of the problem. “Now, what I am proposing is that we dig out a set of chambers right next to the workshops, where we can put the new workshops. The purpose of this is twofold, as we are going to safeguard the workshops from insane dwarves coming into them, and install doors to make sure that when they do go insane (not ever dwarf can have their inner demons calmed, unfortunately), we can just lock the door and let them wear themselves out, as opposed to causing bodily harm to their friends and family.”
This seemed to please the Mad One, yet a question still remained in his eye. “I know what you are thinking, and for now, just continue making the flutes as you have been doing. Once the workshops are constructed, I will have you tear down the current area and move to the old one (If it is even possible, I will have the workshop MADE out of microcline).” That cheered up the Mad One immensely, and he continued with his work making those blue flutes that so perplexed the overseer.

Next, Bp920091 headed down to the smithing area, seeing a hole in the walls of the staircase on her way down and catching a passing mason to plug the breach. She arrived at the smithy with no other problems. “Now, I understand that you have been working hard on smithing, and I will congratulate you on that, However, I am going to make your lives even easier.”
“First off, we are going to dig out an ore and bar storage area several levels above you. This will not only shorten your walking time, but make it so that you run out of ore less frequently. Secondly, we are going to move food and booze down next to your sleeping areas. This means that if you want to get a drink, or something to eat, you no longer have to spend hours walking up flights of stairs to get to them, just walk up one flight of stairs. I will commend the previous overseer on building beds down in your area, and those will come in handy, but you need to have yourself more of a way of living down here. Eventually, I even hope that you will never even need to come up and see the blinding sunlight again. You will be faster, more efficient, and happier.”

Ore Storage Area
(http://i.imgur.com/93qjc.png)
With that, a light flashed in the overseer’s eyes, and she returned to her normal state. Whatever force possessed her did not exist any longer, but she had a feeling that it would definitely return.
First Active Comission:
Have the forges work on smithing all of the tetrahedrite that we have (Copper for traps, silver for hammers)
Need: traps 5x copper serrated disk, 5x copper large manacing spike
4th Granite:
Seed stockpiles are dug out next to farms, created stockpiles, turned seeds off of massive food stockpile
5th Granite:
I have let the remainder of the adamantine smithing remain, but all future smithing will be of copper serrated disks and menacing spikes (and the tetrahedrite ore of course)
6 Slate:
A child has been posessed
He claimed the workshop in the middle of the microcline stockpile... instead of the one right next to him.
13th slate:
some migrants have arrived
56 of them, including 29 children.... thats a lot more mouths to feed, but i need the workforce
of the workforge, five are fishers, three are hunters, and the rest arent worth mentioning
14th slate:
Reshuffling of the noble positions
New Chief medical dwarf (who actually has a diagnostics skill)
In order to organize the new industries, a new Hauler name has been bestowed upon many dwarves (18 to be specific. The criteria was: do they have any useful talents that we would use? No? then they suceed)
28th slate:
I have ordered 3 new miners to begin working on the designations that i have passed down (the two legendary miners do well, but are only two dwarves)
NOTE: There is a lot of job cancellation spam about missing plump helmet spawns, ignore it. Its caused by a dwarf picking up a seed bag and only using one seed, and everyone else doesnt know where the seeds went and give up.
2nd Felsite:
We have finally run out of raw adamantine strands. Im not touching that damn pillar, its an affront to the gods to mine it and im not going to be one of the overseers to doom their fort by being too greedy. One of the members of the millitary called me a coward when i proclaimed this and i had a short word with him after the meeting was over. I regailed him with stories of fortresses that had dared dig too deep and found themselves torn apart by the horrors of below. Unimaginably fast, incredibly strong, and near invincible. Oh, and numerous as the stars in the sky. Taking on one of these monstrosities is a challenge, but not impossible. Taking them on in the swarms that they perfer is suicidal. If the consensus of the fort is to die in the most gruesome way possible, i will continue to dig. After this speech, he seemed a bit mollified, if not entirely convinced.
4th Felsite:
That child that entered the strange mood a while back finally finished his construction. A microline flute, as if we didnt have many of those before... Perhaps he takes after the Mad One. Children need role models after all. I am just terrified that the child chose HIM for his role model...
NOTE: Good god, 75 children... thats a LOT of nonworking mouths to feed.
12th Felsite:
An elven Caravan arrive (i intend to strip them of all of their cloth and booze)
I have the rest of the fort that is not doing anything bring all of the trap components, random stuff, ect
13th Felsite:
After the rest of the fortress has moved the goods for trading up top, ive had the industries broken down. The looms are going above the processed plant stockpiles (for faster processing), just like the stills. The crafting workshops are going in the new containment area (so dwarves can be sealed if needed). Wood furnace is also going in the new workshop area. The Kitchen is NOT going down there, it is going in the new workshop area (for faster access to food, not just plants. A Barrel/pot storage area is also going down there.
Food Processing area
(http://i.imgur.com/OCz4A.png)
Processed Food/Container Stockpile
(http://i.imgur.com/XgQnI.png)
Additionally, a cloth stockpile and the clothiers workshops are going one level up.
So, to summarize, here's how the faming levels work. Keep in mind, Level 0 is the level that was used for a tree farm and that the levels go up, not down.
Level 0 - Farms/seeds
Level 1 - Raw plant stockpiles
Level 2 - Food Processing
Level 3 - Processed Plant/Container Storage
Level 4 - Looms/Breweries
Level 5 - Clothiers workshops/Cloth Storage
Level 6 - Clothing Storage
A handy tool for remembering how they work is that plants grow UP, and so do their products.
19th Felsite: A kobold thief showed up, got scared off by a dog, and ran off into the snowstorm
AN: Im still confused about that gigantic pit right outside the base, we've got floating ce and random mechanisms in it, with two levels of water at the bottom. As far as i can tell, that's fresh water, and im not touching it. Some voodoo sorcery must have caused it.
5th Hematite:
The damn broker gets off his ass and actually gets to the trading depot. We buy every single piece of wood off them, as well as all of their cloth (of which they brought seveal dozen bins) for five spiked silver balls (Of which we have 54 of). I don't know about these elven fetishes, and i don't wanna know.
18th Hematite:
More Migrants arrive... great... We are lucky this time, only one child and nine Dwarves. Since we desperately need more smiths, and since trap components dont require much, if any skill to make and still be just as effective, ive drafted them all into smithing.
28th Hematite:
Its like a swarm of Dwarves decide to actually do something smart and converge en-masse on the gigantic bar stockpile that has been clogging up the forges for a long time. Here's how it works. Copper bars get the level immediately above the forges, bronze, and gold/silver get the level above them. The few non copper, gold, or silver bars that we DO have will remain in the other stockpile. Ore is also going to be stored in those levels (same levels as bars, for consistency).
13th Malachite:
Everything is running much smoother now, industries far more productive than they were before. In celebration for this, i have had the newly constructed clothiers workshops create 15 of every type of clothes (its not like we are wanting for cloth, as we have FIVE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY rope reed fiber cloth)
Speaking of that, the orders for the copper trap components were finally coming to completion. The rough design of this is as such. Each one of those traps is filled with Five Copper serrated disks and Five Copper Menacing spikes. The serrated disks are incredibly effecive against everything that is not at last coated in copper armor, and the copper menacing spikes have enough force to penetrate steel (Oddly enough, only the spikes will penetrate steel, not the blades). This is a simplified setup of one of my past assignments, the fort of hammerlaw. That fort was continually under siege (for eight years straight), and not a single goblin made it past the first section of weapon traps (admittedly, it was a 2x16 corridor filled with those traps, but redundancies were put into place.
None of the adamantine weapons that were smelted under my term lay used, they are just sitting next to the forges that made them in a special stockpile.
22nd Malachite:
Another child withdraws from society, claiming a craftsdwarf's workshop
On another note, we have over a dozen yeti that have been caught by our cage traps... im not sure what to make of that. For starters, i never knew that there were yeti, and secondly, i didnt know that we caught enough to start a damn breeding operation out of them....
24th Sandstone:
More migrants arrive... Why do they keep coming, we are already packed...
13, 5 of them are children (seriously, 75 children. Who brings their kid to a fort like this?)
Also, none of them are notable for having ANY sort of millitary training, forge training, or any skill with the farm... More haulers... yay...
27th sandstone, a dwarven kid withdraws from society... them kids with their strange moods...
15th Timber:
A caravan shows up, we move the spiked silver balls to the trade depot to trade them... probably for their whole damn caravan.
16th Timber:
that kid starts making that construction thing that he got in his head. he dragged off two of our precious logs, two raw gemstones, and a piece of yeti leather... i have no idea what the damn kid is going to make.
20th Timber:
The damn kid finished making a highwood drum... damn that kid, couldnt he have made some adamantine armor or something?
24th Timber:
We trade seven spiked silver balls for every piece of leather, cloth, steel bars, plump helmets, any sort of meat, and and fish they can see that the caravan has...
I can be damn sure that we arent gonna run out of food/drink anytime soon (we should be good for drink for at LEAST two seasons, if none is made)
15th Moonstone:
The merchants finally leave
16th Moonstone:
'
7 Peachicks finally hatch, 4 female, 3 male (males get culled, females go into battery farms)
26th Moonstone:
The culling complete, i have taken another look at our stocks. Additionally, i have discovered a use for our fishers who spent so long getting here. They can clean and gut the (apparently WHOLE) fish that the traders gave us...
19th Opal:
Good God, over ten births this month... make that 11. Dwarves need more things to do i guess.
25th Opal:
Well, it has finally happened, we are given the chance to become part of the empire... as a result, I nominated The Mad One for the baron (he's mad already, so he's practically a noble)
27th Opal: The outpost liason finally gets around to talking to me... i ask him to bring as much cheese, meat, beer, wood, barrels, and cloth as he possibly can.
Obsidian:
Besides more babies being born, the final engravings being put to the main meeting hall... nothing happened. Ive gotta write one heck of a finale
1 Granite:
"ATTENTION!" a voice rings out over the crowded meeting hall. This was the end of the year that Bp920091 was overseeing, and every single dwarf was called into this meeting. From the Dozen or so Forgers who never ventured above the farms, to the hunters who kept the fort secure and captured the wild yetis. At the moment, over two hundred and Five Dwarves inhabited the fort (now a metropolis, on its way to becoming a barony), so the hall was packed so tight that many Dwarves could not turn around. Additionally, the yetis that were captured could have been said to be in attendance, as they were in the far back of the hall.
"CITIZENS OF THE FORT OF AMBERJEWEL!" Rings the voice again, recognized as the overseer who had so organized the fort that they inhabited. A strange purple mist seemed to leak out of her mouth as she talked, parts of her twitching slightly. "I HAVE BROUGHT ORDER TO THIS FORT OVER THE PAST YEAR! WITHOUT ORDER THEIR IS CHAOS, AND I INTEND TO BRING ORDER TO THIS FORT FOREVER!" The surrounding dwarves looked at each other, knowing full well that each overseer had exactly one year of a term. The unvoiced thought was "Is this overseer really breaking the only unbreakable rule?"
A mumble seemed to come from the mouth of the overseer, too quiet to hear. "I HAVE BROUGHT THIS FORT TO ORDER TO PREPARE FOR THE IMPENDING WAVE. AFTER ALL, WHAT IS THE POINT OF DESTROYING A FORT THAT IS UNORGANIZED, SIMPLY NOT FUN, ILL TELL YOU!" At these words, the surrounding dwarves seemed to become restless, but from the mouth of the overseer a quiet shaking voice seemed to be saying "No... You wont... OF COURSE I WILL, YOU FOOL. I HAVE BEEN CONTROLLING YOU FOR OVER A YEAR AND YOU STILL HAVE NEVER ONCE BEEN ABLE TO EXERT YOUR OWN WILL!"
At this point, the Mad One seemed to get an idea and started playing one of his blue microline flutes that he kept with him at all times. "IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO STOP ME, I WILL BRING ABOUT THE DESTRUCTION OF AMBERJEWEL." "No, You wont", said the quieter voice again, dwarves remembering this voice as that of the overseer bp920091 before she became overseer.
A slight rumble seemed to be emanating from the overseer's position, and she seemed to be vibrating. "Quick, Play More Flutes!" Said the Mad One. "WHY NOW, WHY HAVE YOU NOW PUT UP SUCH A RESISTANCE! YOU WOULD SURRENDER WILLINGLY IF YOU KNEW WHAT WAS COMING! MUCH QUICKER AND EASIER TO DIE BY MY INTERVENTION THAN WHAT WILL ARRIVE SOON." The millitary, seeing that this was something that should stop fast, moved close as if to detain (or kill) the overseer. As the approached, the purple mist around the overseer shifted into a purple glowing sphere and they were able to come no closer than ten feet to the overseer, in any direction, as if the sphere was stopping them.
By this time, several more dwarves had picked up flutes and had started playing, the music seeming to affect the overseer. "THIS SOUND, IT COMES WITH THE END. WHY DO YOU PLAY IT!" "You will Never suceed, we will stand strong, we will defeat all who invade us" came the old voice of the overseer, louder and steadier than before. As the Mad One contuned playing, the surrounding dwarves kept picking up flutes and the sound rose in intensity.
A child seemed to get an idea and dashed off (many of the dwarves thought this cowardice). An grating scream built from the overseer, the voice that had spoken with authority becoming sharp. The shaking contined to build until many of the miners became worried for the structural stability of the whole fort.
The child that had run off down the staircase reappeared, pushing an object into the Mad One's hands, and his eyes lit up with glee. Ritharsazir, the microline artifact flute that had been completed by that same child months earlier was raised to the lips of the Mad One. As he drew breath, a loud "NO!" could be heard from the overseer. As the Mad One played Ritharsazir, the pulsating purple glow seemed to intensify, the scream rising in intensity as well. "GET OUT OF MY MIND!" the overseer shouted, bringing with it a clarity that had never been heard in over a year from the dwarf. As the Mad One played his heart out, a black shrouded glow seemed to rise from the purple glow. The scream rose in pitch, the black glow raising far above the head of the overseer, the connection narrowing betwee the two.
The rest of the dwarves that were not playing flutes were awestruck by the sight. A large black bubble seemed to be growing over the overseer and the purple glow of the overseer, with the link between them narrowing. The music seemed to reach a cresendo, the climax of the song, and the scream seemed to die completely, the shaking of the ground stopping. "SO BE IT! YOU WILL NEVER BE GRANTED ANY MERCY FROM WHAT WILL COME!" "WE NEVER WANTED ANY FROM YOU! DEMON! BEGONE!"
A blinding flash of light was seen by all in the room at this, the Mad One stopping his playing along with everyone else. As the eyesight of the dwarves returned, they saw bp920091 on the ground, slowly getting up, cracks in the stone all around her leaking purple smoke that rapidly dissapated. "I Think i am done for awhile, I dont care who leads the fort, take it into glory" said Bp920091, her voice returned to normal. "I just want to go and plant plump helmets for now."
As she said that, she slowly walked down the staircase, leaving the shocked crowd to think about what had just happened. The Mad One was the first to recover, packing away the now legendary flute and walking back to his workshop to create more of them. The rest of the fort soon followed, resuming their jobs that they had done before.
Once again the fort of Amberjewel was without an overseer, but they could deal with that tomorrow.
Ill be uploading my whole save file, with DF included (as im going out of town, i may as well make sure its playable).

The Post for the spring is out! I'm not the best at writing so bear with me here
A journal bound by yeti leather lies here
1st Granite 94:
I decided to build the royal thronerooms near the caverns since there isn't much room above
(http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o660/zimer02/royalbedroomsamberjewel_zps42ddaaf4.png)[/img]
Also I saw a dwarf without a foot getting a drink, it was a bit disturbing actually and when yelled at her to go to the hospital she replied that there was no hospital, so I need to get that done,
I can already tell that this is going to be hell, and to think the king is going to be in this hellhole soon
3rd Granite 94:
Nothing much has happened, I ordered the engravers to smooth the miners bedrooms downs (felt bad for them) and a child finnaly became old enough to work not sure on what to do with him though
8th Granite 94:
Well the hosptial done, hope I don't have to see anymore footless dwarves wobbling around, also the Kings bedroom is in the middle of a gold cluster might maker for some quality rooms, still can't get anything done since most of my workers are building that giant pymarid thing outside( why do we need that anyways)
13th Granite 94:
A goblin kidnapper was caught outside today, I guess the allure of having over one hundred children to chose from outweighed the freezing cold, and the yetis, is it just me or do Goblins look downright disgusting, I'll have to make a choice of what I want to do with him later
(http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o660/zimer02/snatchercaughtamberjewel_zps21b347cf.png)[/img]
17th Granite 94:
A yeti reverted back to being wild again, scared the living hell out of me when it tried to bite my hand off.
Also two more goblin kidnappers have been caught outside, I still can't figure out why they would want to trek from there towers to some frozen glacier in the middle of a snow storm to try and steal children.
Before I could leave the office for a drink one of my advisors told me they caught ANOTHER goblin snatcher, I swear to Armok if there's another bloody goblin then I feed them all to the forgotten beast in the caverns.
It's only been 2 hours from the last time the caught the snatcher to tell that they caught another damn snatcher, is there like a brigade of them slowly crawling towards the fortress or what.
16th Slate 94:
Not much has been going on for the month, The miners have dug out the Kings Bedroom for and the Ice pyramid (still don't know why it exists) has gotten a few new floors also the yetis keep becoming wild
26th Slate 94:
Oh no
(http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o660/zimer02/thekingamberjewel_zps96b1495c.png)[/img]
The King is here and we don't have the office or the tomb ready, I scrambled the dwarves to get everything set for the king, I'm working overtime to get the his gold furniture ready, this is bad, he's going to have me beheaded for sure.
14th Felsite 94:
An elven caraven arrived today, a lot of them actually, I haven't been paying attention to our tradeable goods as much as pleasing the king so I sent a couple of finished goods up to trade
(http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o660/zimer02/elvesamberjewel_zpsae09dc50.png)[/img]
16th Felsite 94
The elves didn't have anything good on them so I traded some stuff for their logs
24th Felsite 94:
A ranger claimed a craftsdwarf workshop, mumbling about some grand design or something like that, oddly enough he picked the one that was all the way down in the caverns
1st Hematite 94;
The fortress so far is going on either great or mediocore (not sure on which one) we haven't been attacked in a while but we don't have much set up for the King as of yet, I swear summer going be a hell trying to get everything set up.
So how's my writing, too much writing? not enough writing?, anyways summer will come either by late tonight or tomorrow morning
Due to exams this took forever but it's finally here
9th Hematite 94:
Since not much has been going on in the fortress I'll tell you my latest plans
(http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o660/zimer02/Overseersfloorsummeramberjewel_zps790ce78b.png)[/img]
I thought of the idea of making Private Quarters to all the previous overseers, (and current) one of the miners called me out on something, but never the less progress must go on
14th Hematite 94:
One of the Rangers have started building something, I say something cause he won't tell us what it is and thematerials are a bit questionable
(http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o660/zimer02/questionablematerialssummeramberjewel_zpsd61cac10.png)[/img]
18th Hematite 94:
He finally made it and it's worth a fortune
(http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o660/zimer02/legendarysummeramberjewel_zpse2d87de9.png)[/img]
4th Malachite 94:
An Armok damn Giantess decided to travel from where ever giants live and decided to attack our hole of a fortress in the middle of a glacier! a glacier! I would think that the freezing cold factor would be a turn off but no, every damn thing has to come at us, I seriously doubt the military when it comes to this so for now I ordered everyone inside the fortress
(http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o660/zimer02/GiantesssummerAmberjewel_zps69bf1d6b.png)[/img]
8th Malachite 94:
Surprising enough one of the hunters outside got the beat on the giant and shot her to an inch of her life, unfortunaly he stoped (for some reason and casually walked away like it was no big deal) so I'm opening the drawbridge and letting the military deal with this.
10th Malachite 94:
The military did it! they killed the damn thing chopped the damn thing's head off, one of the King's bodyguards actually ran faster than any of the guard
(http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o660/zimer02/finishingblowsummeramberjewel_zps16bdf22a.png)[/img]
13th Galena 94:
You know, Galena was going great and all but those stupid gobbos decided it was a great day to attack our fortress, maybe their friends of the snatchers we caught? Nah, even if they were why would they go a freezing wasteland to save them but that's their their choice
(http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o660/zimer02/siegesummeramberjewel_zpsd048a842.png)[/img]
15th Galena 94:
Since the military said to me that they're not going out side in the cold (the hell type of military are these guys) so I had the bridge close, unfortunaly the only dwarf with the balls to run outside decided to run outside when the bridge closed, and smashed his head.
Damn gobbos, later I recieved word that the dwarf caught outside was father! Those gobbos will pay for the death of my father they will pay!! (ignore the fact the fact that it was mainly caused on his and my stupidity, makes for better stories)
I'll try to get Autumn to go a lot faster than summer.
Unfortunately most of the pictures got lost but a few made it
Here lies a journal bound by yeti leather, it is studded with gold
5th Limestone 94:
Great news, the man who died was not my father actually, it was just some dwarf who my advisor somehow thought it was my father,
15th Limestone 94:
Uber_pye has been possessed! I think, he running around saying some strange name in the dark, then again he normally does that
15th Limestone 94:
After finally being fed up with the compliants from dwarves that the gobbos are calling them insulting names, I decided to sick the military after them, they waiting near the gate waiting for me to pull the gate
17th Limestone 94:
After two days of organizing I got the military to muster at the gate, I ordered them to wait for the gobbos to charge at them.
18th Limestone
I can barely believe I have to call all of these bloodclots "the military"
First, the gate opened, two dwarves got a little anxious and charged ahead, that's to be expected. They eventually were getting they're ass kicked so I sent the rest of the military out. Half of the dwarves decided to jump off the bridge, fall on their ass, and let the gobbos get some hit's in and killed two dwarves before the competent half came in and saved the day.
13th Sandstone:
Good news everybody, Uber_pye made an adamantine crossbow! while I wish he did it with something less valuable it's still worth the gold.
17th Timber:
A kobold has almost infiltrared this barren Glacier to steal our stuff, despite the fact there's stuff outside worth value he has to come into this crowded hell hole
18th: Timber:
A caravan from some fort has arrived, there's not much that we need so I traded them some stuff for all of their booze
I'd forgotten about this thread. Is that bad of me?
Don't worry, I occasionaly forget that I'm supposed to do a journal ;)
here it is the last of my story! Winter wasn't very exciting through :(
Here lies a journal titled AmberJewel bound in yeti leather, on the journal lies a picture of AmberJewel the journal
19th Moonstone 94:
Not much is happening so I've decided to train most of the peasants into doing something other than being a leach
(http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o660/zimer02/peasantwinteramberjewel_zpse03d4dd6.png)[/img]
18th Obsidian 94:
Another bloody forgotten beast has decided to come to the fort, I swear we will never be able to explore this place.

1st Granite 95:
As I was told by my official I can finally leave this hellish position to someone else! I can set back and watch as someone else deals with the gobbos, the king, and everything in between.
I will get the save up As soon as I figure out how to.
Somewhere in a galaxy far, far, away...
Diary of "Moses" Charcoalblockades, Captain of the Amberjewel Guard
2nd Hematite, 97
Our mayor is a fat, lazy, teenager. The whole fort looks up to him, though, because of how he "struggled through" all his pitiful problems. He doesn't think, doesn't work. He just sits on his ☼gold throne☼ and eats ☼cuttlefish roasts☼, surrounded by barrels of prickle berry wine.
The militia commander's no better. She waddles around patting yetis and complaining that the entry hall is too drafty.
Her captains are even worse. One of them, Thob or whatever, just stands around the mayor, currying favour, saying she's "on duty", "guarding our noble leader".
Corpses litter the halls. Nobody knows where anything is. Except the magma forges, everyone knows where they are, but no-one can be bothered the two-day climb down the stairs.
Corpses litter the halls. There are goblins running amok in the shallower levels. Most of them got sliced up in out serrated disk traps, though.
Corpses litter the halls. We have food and drink aplenty. The mayor complains of hunger. The smiths complain of thirst. The militia complains about "long patrol duty".
Corpses litter the halls.
Corpses.
Everywhere.
ptah.
I'm gonna clean this place up. We're an Armok-damned Mountainhome? Let's at least look like an Armok-damned mountainhome.

It completely took him by surprise. Njals was putting -dog tallow roast [4]- in a food barrel when some fellow hauler said that he, Njals "Atticsinews", had been elected as fortress overseer for next year.
Not that it was a bad decision. One among the few dwarves with higher education, talented diagnostician himself, he had a reputation for his great analytical abilities and amazing memory. Nevertheless Njals felt being a stranger to Amberjewel. He arrived only half a year before, in midsummer 98, and had no time to look around since then. Despite his plain-spoken, cheerful, patient nature and readiness of speech he had no long-term acquaintances among underground dwellers (say nothing of friends!) Full of hidden mechanisms and unorthodox engineering solutions, the fortress was a big mystery as well. Its design became quite hectic as previous overseers struggled to overcome chapter of accidents which all but led to complete extinction.
"Wonder if I'll be able to pass it in a better state year hence", Njals thought, directing his steps upstairs. Main entrance security measures were to be inspected first.
I've played an in-game month already; have spent almost a day to understand what's going on. It was fun (in common sense.) Still have a lot of questions. I've never played such a big (in terms of space) fort and some game features are completely new to me. I've never breached caverns, to be honest! Also it's impossible to understand existing minecart routes (there are no zoom to stops etc!) Like it very much though.
As I'm trying to make fine narrative and I'm not a native English speaker, writing will be a limiting factor to my progress. Please PM in case of unclear wording/grammar.
Ok, this third-person writing is quite tricky, so I'll revert to simpler descriptive first-person narrative.
I've started with issuing some simple orders to check dwarven input response time. Produce some booze, produce some biscuits, produce mayor-mandated buckler etc. Manager was too busy at first, so I've stripped him from other jobs. Then I've explored the fortress (main entrance, caverns entrances, magma etc) and reread the thread to get bits of useful info from previous overseers. I loved bp920091's part the most because he explained some fortress design. Thank you british petroleum! Should say that I take off hat to edgefigaro who was able to overcome the disaster. Also, floating stones looks terrific; may be one of the best fortress features so far.
Grazers started starving to death on a grassless pasture, generating miasma clouds. Regular refuse stockpiles are full and/or not accepting certain kinds of refuse. So I've designated to dump rotten corpses. It happened that Amberjewel had at least 3 (it's difficult to check how many exactly) dump zones: one over air-locked pit, one over magma channel and one just somewhere. Of course, dwarves put rotten corpses to the third one, spreading miasma even more. I plan to overhaul refuse management to improve happiness a little. To deal with grazers I've created a second pasture to the south of the new farm plots, it actually had a lot of fungus/moss concealed by mud. Looks like it was a tree farm once, but we have a bigger one now anyway. Also I plan to slaughter all the grazers except milk- and wool-giving.
As far as it goes, most of the fortress will run itself
I've found that the crippled legendary miner, one of the survivors from happier times, was refusing to work. IIRC the previous overseer mentioned this too. First I thought he was unable to move due to his leg loss, but that wasn't the case. He moved to his quarters and just stood there, hungry. Hungry? WTF? Food was like 15 tiles from him. I've just ignored him for a while. But then the mayor did something similar (had he tried to feed the miner?):
Eventually I investigated. The reason was that some citizens and most of children were assigned to a burrow which occasionally intersected the food stockpile, but just a little. There were no food left in the intersection, only booze, so they were doomed to wait for a lucky hauling job or starve to death.
I was horrified to read the health history of the aforementioned miner:
It looks like health care was in a very poor state. I even wasn't able to find a hospital at first, but when I finally found it... Classy: no tables, no traction benches, no soap, but shitloads of cloth and thread.
Well, ingame Njals is a doctor by profession so he definitely will fix this.
I've checked our metallurgy industry and found we had a little iron reserve but a lot of flux and quite significant amount of goblinite and coke. Producing pig iron/steel from smelter menu doesn't work though because of a bug (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=434). Designating smelting via manager solves the issue. I plan to melt all the goblinite and produce as much steel as possible, maybe forge some decent steel mail shirts/helms (we have mostly bronze armor for now).
I'd be very thankful to uber pye if he explains the vital controls necessary for trading/accepting migrants etc. I've found only a lever controlling main entrance bridge so far. Pulled it twice, launching some poor cat into the air; nevertheless a trade depot was still inaccessible from outside. We have 2 depots btw (second one is neatly airlocked but deconstructed and not connected to the outside at all). Also, how to control the western tunnel? (http://i.imgur.com/XRiFHu0.png)
And how to start the notorious minecart trap?
Some random stuff occured. A peasant was taken by a mood:
Its base value is over 121 kilodwarvenbucks, making it second most valuable artifact after adamantine crossbow (756 kdb).
Somebody was concerned about minotaur growth rate? Well...
Latest weather report: the weather has cleared after a snow storm. The temperature outside is 9982 U (-10 C). The temperature inside the glacial part of fortress is 9990 U (-6 C). The temperature in dwarven quarters is 10015 U (+8 C). The temperature in magma zone is 10075 U (+42 C).
Upd: Ok, I've found a lever controlling 3-way bridge and am trading with elves now. Injured 2 dwarves in a minecart trap, which seemed to be turned on.
Ok, so what happened next? Here's a report of events from mid spring till beginning of winter.
Our fortress has a complex entrance facility (F1). Internal corridor is connected to a sort of outside island with a bridge, and that island is connected to the ground via another (so called three-way) bridge. The island has an alternative connection to the trap room beneath. All this stuff is controlled from our workshops level (F2).
When I found the three-way bridge lever, I immediately pulled it. Elven merchants arrived shortly; I was very happy to be able to trade. At that moment I hadn't any idea about how the trap works, why it needs reloading, what is minecart at all etc etc. It happened however that the trap was turned on, so very soon I had 2 freshly injured dwarves (an adequate mason and a proficient potter), the game on pause, me learning stuff on wiki. =) I still don't understand how the trap works, to be honest -- difficult to tell when it's already constructed. I decided it's not that important since you can obey safety rules and treat it like a black box, and went on.
As I said before, I planned to establish high standard healthcare among other things. Nothing was ready in the late spring, though, so capable dwarves hauled their unconscious comrades to the old tableless hospital. I quickly built a table adjacent to both patients to provide some urgent surgery and proceeded to build proper hospital.
I placed it close to the well area, where bp920091 planned it to be (i.e. over the jail). However I was concerned that patients may catch a cold from contact with ice walls, so I decided to coat entire room with wooden walls and make a warm parquet floor as well. Probably it's the most luxurious thing you can do in a glacial fortress with constant lack of wood. First tranche included 5 separate wards with a bed, an adjacent table and traction bench each, separated by colored wooden walls to cheer sick dwarves up. There is a room for another 5 wards left.
At that point I became concerned by fortress defense or, rather, the lack of thereof (I haven't understood the trap design so I wasn't able to rely on it solely). Thus I quickly finished a sniper's nest uber pye designated. I was in hurry so instead of nest it became a pillbox: single story, 3x3 roofed building with a single free tile inside and 8 embrasures menacing in every direction, encompassed by a minimalistic moat. Just then bad luck struck me again: while deconstructing an unnecessary staircase on the pillbox roof (first I planned to make it two story), another dwarf managed to do something stupid and fell unconscious. I have never realized how did that happen: a job was none but innocent, just removing a single staircase with nothing above it. Still a high master spinner was so unlucky that he got twice more wounds than 2 dwarves injured by minecart trap combined. o_O
Dwarves finished the pillbox just before siege came.
I sealed the fortress (elven caravan had already left, but early human one managed to slip inside), stationed marksdwarf squad in the pillbox and continued with healthcare problems. Newly-established soap industry produced bars of valuable forgotten beast soap (trace amounts of forgotten beast venom provide mild analgesic effect). A couple of fully equipped wards was already built, so I deconstructed beds under sick dwarves and removed old hospital zone to have them hauled to the new hospital. I switched to other tasks for a while and was surprised to not find patients neither in old place nor in new. It happened that our fortress had another bad-equipped hospital, placed deeper inside and eventually closer to the old one than to the proper one.
Looks like every second overseer wasn't able to find a hospital and built a new one himself. =) Well, I took on the mantle. =)
After some more bed deconstructing two injured dwarves were moved to the new hospital and started to receive proper treatment. The third one was stuck in the old hospital. I tried everything to unstuck him, but nothing worked: I couldn't build a bed again because he was occupying the tile (the same for statue to move him), assigning him to a squad didn't help. I tried to build a mini-hospital around him (he needs bone setting) but it didn't help either. I haven't tried injuring him more, though. (!!!) I'm talking about Ducim Dodokdegel, Mason. If you manage to unstuck him please describe the process. I think the bug may have been caused by deconstructing the bed when the dwarf was requesting wound dressing (this request can still be seen through z>health screen, but not through his personal health screen). =(
Our marksdwarves did a good job, already scaring away 2 goblin squads out of 4.
I was amused to notice that due to compact pillbox setup enemy was so close early on that some dwarf have entered a martial trance. Third squad managed to pass the active trap and occupy top of the island, being too far from the pillbox to be shot at. I've raised the main bridge and carved some fortification straight beside it, to allow point-blank fire at the enemy from the main entrance. Still it was very difficult to position dwarves properly -- they tended to scatter behind the embrasure. So I've designated some statues to block useless tiles. =) Before it was done third goblin squad was half dead, half fleeing. I disbanded the marksdwarf squad temporarily to let them eat and drink in comfort. The fourth enemy squad led by goblin mace lord fell back but haven't left the map however.
After a time I stationed marksdwarves in the pillbox again and opened trap entrance and main bridge together to lure goblins closer. Almost immediately some Urist McLateDwarf runs to the main bridge instead of the pillbox and starts loosing bolts at the enemy ignoring personal commands to hide. Thus I wasn't able to close main bridge without killing him. When goblins were close I designated toggling trap entrance lever, other marksdwarves were shooting at approaching enemy at full rate, but civil dwarves were extra busy and let the mace lord and a troll pass the trap room. At this moment I realize that the lone marksdwarf is probably dead, but raising the main bridge meant killing him for free. I let him fight instead. Surrounded, he started wrestling with the troll and was thrown off the bridge dead.

I designated toggling main bridge lever immediately, the troll managed to get inside the entrance corridor but the goblin mace lord was launched into the air following nice parabola and died. The troll was killed by human caravan guards almost immediately.

The rest of our squad thinned out remaining goblins and the siege was over.
Meanwhile I've uncluttered magma smelters a little and introduced a goblinite stockpile on the magma level (F6) (material set to iron/steel, base quality to standard/well-crafted). You can d-b-m entire thing from time to time. Some marble was hauled to that level too.
5 steel mail shirts have been forged, steel helms and leggings are next in turn.
We have 22 iron bars, 22 steel bars and 10 pig iron bars at this moment -- some improvement over start of turn.
Some news related to names dwarves:
Heisenberg became an accomplished cook.
joeclark77, legendary bone carver, has grown to become a peasant (obviously a minor bug).
Wolfgrim became a talented weaponsmith.
casser has lost the mayor chair to some thirteen years old peasant.
Njals became an adept diagnostician. I've made him chief medical dwarf.
The rest are safe and sound.
We had an immigrant wave of about 10 dwarves in spring. Our numbers are 82 at the moment (early winter). We had no immigrants in other seasons.
Two injured dwarves have been healed:

The second one still has an infection, though, but I hope forgotten beast soap treatment will help.
The marksdwarf squad gained some skills:

That's all for now. I have 3 more month to play, expect to finish soon.
Ahaha I'm screwed.

Have no idea how it happened. What should I do now? Try to minimize losses or just fight? The problem is that the beast occupied our main stairway (of sorts), so marksdwarves can not fire without getting into melee range.
As I realized the toad is much slower than my dwarves, I decided to wait and lure it to open space, then engage with crossbows to avoid possible poison. It almost worked as expected. Most civilian dwarves were fleeing successfully and our captain of the guard even managed to put 2 bolts into it somehow. But then the beast caught up with our thresher, who moved slowly because she lost her foot before and didn't have a crutch. She had an adamantine spear instead. A short fierce brawl ensued. The beast bited her left hand and ripped it away but luckily the spear was in the right hand. She injured beast's middle spine, falling it over. The beast died after some agony, caught in a burst of it's own boiling extract. A video is here (http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-2552-fbkill).
Our heroic thresher military career is probably over, because she lost a foot AND an arm how. Unless that you retrain her to marksdwarf.
Oh, she can hold a crutch, a shield and the spear all in one hand. Also, how come she didn't get any of that boiling extract on her?
I thought first is possible only in adventure mode. I have no idea about the second.
The rest of year was quite uneventful.
Beforementioned stuck injured mason got unstuck somehow, got a strange mood and produced an artifact "historical" statue. Then he received all necessary treatment.

Steel production was running smoothly. Our armorsmith forged a bunch of steel mail shirts, helms ans leggings, and there are some steel left however.
Kobolds got pretty brazen.

Save is here (http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=7712).
I forgot to say something important: we now have a domesticated yeti child!
OH HOW COULD YOU!! YOU HAVE FAILED US ALL.
I'm joking. Don't worry, it's not the end of the world that you couldn't finish your turn. It happens a lot, and I think we can just move on to the next person because we're so organised.
I think.
Who is up next, anyway?
Okay, thanks. The latest save is the one Njals linked? I'll download that. You're going to get some story about the fort in a few days.
EDIT:
From afar it looks glorious. Giant pyramid rising from the ice cold glacier. It's the true masterpiece of the Dwarven engineering. How could anything as beautiful as this be chaotic hellhole where the yetis crawl to die?
The I move couple of z-levels down.
Oh god.
This is one of the least fucked up floors of the Amberjewel. So we have whole stockpile full of severed goblin hands?
And then the prisoners... We have currently 82 dwarves, few hundred or something like that animals and about 60 prisoners.
Really? What we are going to do with 60 prisoners? Hell, soon were going to have more prisoners than we have a citizens.
I don't even pretend to understand what the heck is going on there. What you see is a room full of stray yetis punching and kicking a bunch of cats. Why? I don't have a slightest idea. Which ones there are the bad guys? The cats or the yetis? Are those others the members of infamous Cat Mafia (the one which detonates fortresses with thermonuclear weapons)? And yetis are just defending the glory of the dwarves? Or are the cats the defenders of the fort and yetis are trying to kill them? And why are those yetis so ineffective? Maybe they are pacifist yetis and trying just to calm the cats down (which, in this scenario, are anti-nuclear protesters - wait what but aren't cats walking nuclear reactors?)?
...
Where is booze stockpile. I think I need a drink.
I dorfed myself. I'm now legendary mason. And I hate oysters. And I have an adamantine crossbow. The artifact one.
I guess you don't mind if I'll start building an apartment to the pyramid? Not like I care, I already started it. I ordered every dwarf either to build my room or to dump all trash (there is clothes for like needs of thousands of dwarves) into my brand-new atoms-smasher. Also I planned to paint the pyramid's inside with goblin blood, so I started to build dropping chambers for our prisoners. Also, I ordered full golden furniture for me.
This so called "front gate" is the most stupidly complex thing I've ever seen. I have no idea how it is supposed to work. Oh, migrants. More slaves for me. That's nice.
... how the front gate is supposed to be opened? Never mind, what or where the front gate is?Ah, there's some notes. Is is "front gate" or "three-way gate"? I don't know. I'll pull that, and those other levers too. I even got the migrants safely inside!
Some ghost just scared a dwarf to death. Pretty sad. Now I have fewer workers to build stupid things for me. I ordered some slabs to be engraved. It took some time before I even found any craftsdwarf's workshop. Why is everything so stupidly designed. This layour may work with 200 dwarves, but with 80 dwarves everyone uses most of their time just to walk from place a to place b.
There is my atom smasher. All these clothes lying around are totally killing the FPS. It's just 42-55. I started to mass-butcher useless animals like cats and other things. I didn't touch to the yetis. I ordered some of them to guard the gates and trap corridors and stuff. I also built a dropping chamber for the prisoners abowe that yeti-cat-clusterfuck-room. Let's drop some gobbos into the mix. I don't see what could possibly go wrong.
One of our best smithes got some stupid idea and claimed his workshop and some adamantine wafers. And he is demanding logs. Hell, this fort has literally everything but logs. We are in the middle of a glacier, man. Do you see many trees growing there?
I ordered someone idler to (have I mentioned how much I hate idlers? Every time I see one I put him to haul some trash) hack down some pink mushroom-trees.
Then. I want to know who made those statues. Those gold statues are going to be in my room.
And... that idiot made a statues of oysters. If there's one thing I haet, it's oysters. The world is literally full of good things that could be made into statues, but no... Oysters.
Goblins came. It seems that I forgot to close the front gate. I still don't have an idea which lever closes it? Is is the "main entrance" (or something like that) or "three-way gate-whatever"? Also, DEATH TRAP sounds good. I ordered it to be pulled. And I stationed military into the ice floor.
I don't see anything working even if I pulled all the levers. Our traps hovewer are absurdly effective. Now I see why do we have so much prisoners. At least half of the invaders are in the cages now. Including the leader of a goblin squad. His soldiers are now just sitting in a circle near that cage waiting their boss. Not like they could open the cage or anything. They just sit there. In the ice brigde. I wonder if there's a lever which retracts that brigde...
Still no deathtrap. Let's deal eith them with good ol' Dwarven Iron. Or adamantine-steel-iron-bronze combo. For some reason there's a civilian dwarf between a goblins... how he is even managed to get there without getting killed? And where is he going? Outside?]/i] Why?
Well now he's not going anywhere anymore.
That Närber guy is just plain badass. He punched some goblins into face, ran into that corridor-thingie (I don't understand why dwarves are trying to get outside - they aren't trying to stockpile anything, that one had "no job"). Then he died. The end.
Yeah, adamantine weapons are awesome... but... why is that macedwarf wielding a sword?
The thing is that the military of the Amberjewel is a bunch of losers.
The problem is not in the equipment. We have weaponry and armour for a giant dwarven armies.
No, the problem is that they aren't always active. They take weeks to pick up their equipment before they will arrive into the battle. And then they have forgotten something (like, you know, the weapon) and they run back into the furnaces the hundred levels below the surface. And then they wonder why everyone is getting murdered.
After this battle is over, I'll make those losers to the fighters. I'll make sure they have a weapons they are skilled to use. And that they have best possible armour (we really shouldn't use those bronze armours, we have enough iron and steel). In the dwarven fortresses, there is a three important things - military, military and military. And maybe awesome golden rooms for the leaders. I'll make sure that the fortress of Amberjewel won't ever lose a fight again.
So those were events during the spring. More will come soon.
man, i really should explain my death trap
ok the lever noted with OPEN DEATH TRAP will pull in a bridge so that things must go in to it
the entrance to the death trap is next to the sniper's nest
the death trap is those three gold minecarts on those circular tracks (if they are not there, please reload)
the mincarts are endlessly being boosted by impulse ramps(http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=120935.0 (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=120935.0))
the exit to the death trap is in that ramped rectangle you see in your 6th picture
if a minecart has stopped you can use the lever noted RELOAD DEATH TRAP
this lowers the draw-bridges south of the trap so that you can restart them(just un-forbid the minecarts)
there should also be a lever that stops all the minecarts (I don't remember where it is or what it is called)
We have a problem.
After a hard fighting in the Corridor of Dwarven Stupidity, I managed to push the goblins outside (they are still waiting for their caged leader). Now there's that goblin running in the ice chambers. That bastard has... like, four names?
So many dwarves have fallen to this spear.
Wolfgrim, I love you. Now we have a legendary weaponsmith AND artifact adamantine battle axe? Can a dwarf hope for more? This is awesome.
I dorfed you, edgefigaro. That's first unbearded male dwarf I've ever seen.
A crossbow barrage led by Matoro the Bloodsnow managed to hit a couple of times to that goblin. Shey eventually bashed that goblin into head for couple times. That bastard is down.
Dwarves, why can't you all be like Shey?
I managed to glose the gate. I think I've understood the gate levers now. Amberjewel is safe for now. The next project is the military.
At first I disbanded whole military. I'll let them to recuperate for a moment while I check the stocks.
We have inside the Amberjewel:
10 iron/steel battle axes
6 adamantine battle axes (one artifact)
1 iron hammer
12 silver hammers
3 steel hammers (is steel a good hammer material? Isn't it pretty light?)
2 steel short swords
5 adamantine short swords
1 iron spear
4 adamantine spears
8 silver maces
28 copper crossbows
~100 bone crossbows, including 2 human bone crossbows and 2 goblin bone crossbows. 38 forgotten beast bone crossbows.
28 bronze breastplates
~60 iron mail shirts
9 steel mail shirts
1 steel greaves
3 iron greaves
30 bronze greaves
40 iron helms
33 bronze helms
17 steel helms
2 iron gauntlets
68 bronze gauntlets
65 bronze high boots
2 steel high boots
45 iron shields
31 bronze shields
I ordered the smithes to smelt all copper, bistmuh bronze and other stupid things like silver spears. We have awesome amounts of weaponry. Since we don't need to worry about food for couple of years, I'll build very big active military force with mainly smithes and masons as a civilians.
And I'd like to say I really like that first picture. It's beautiful. What tool makes it?
This tool. (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=63484.0)
man, i really should explain my death trap
Thanks. I'll try to figure out how it works. I've actually always wanted to see finished minecart impulse gun so I could study it and finally build one by myself.
Fuck, I'm dead. Again.
Do you dorfing? Again?
Also I planned to paint the pyramid's inside with goblin blood, so I started to build dropping chambers for our prisoners.
If I may make a suggestion.
Dropping chambers will prove effective at painting the floors with blood. But not the walls. For the walls, you are going to want to propel a prisoner so fast against the side that they do something akin to exploding on impact.
Conveniently, inside the pyramid, we have a partially constructed impulsed roller coasted.
And I do believe that it is a couple more impulse ramps and one dwarven autoshotgun attachment away from becoming a much more effective spraypainting tool than simply dropping goblins onto the snow.
Update: On second thought, I don't know if it is possible or how to get a live, uncaged non dwarf creature into riding a minecar.
Okay. The great communist reform has begun. First, nearly all of the dwarves got their profession changed. Now there is only haulers, builders and some special guys like mechanics and doctors. I ordered the farms not to grow any crops. We have ~9000 units of food and ~2000 units of drink. For about 70 dwarves. We have two animal trainers, two doctors, two smiths and everyone else is either mason or just hauler. I disabled all stone-, wood-, food-, and item hauling, because we really don't need them. We don't have to producre anything.
I rearranged military to small homogenous squads. Their barracks and shooting ranges are in those great ice halls. The uniforms (I made new uniforms for them) don't have weapons assigned beyond the fifth position, so remember to assign more weapons if you make squads larger.
So this came. It would be awesome to capture him and put to the labyrinth. Unfortunately the goblins killed him.
I started to seal off the caverns. Instead of continuing the previous overseer's walling project, I just floored some stairs and cut off large parts of empty corridors and things. I was very lucky, since I got final floor built just before that FB arrived nearby - it was really like six tiles away from the stairs. Ah, sometimes dwarves don't fail completely!
So our Chief Medical Dwarf, Njals, built a tunnel tube door. Why does everyone want wood for thei artifacts. Like they don't know that we're living in a Armok-forsaken glacier.
Matoro, the captain of the guard and the overseer, had her dining room finished. Those wooden tables might be even more luxurous than the golden ones. You know, because we're living in a Armok-forsaken glacier.
Some humans come to trade. I made them to take our garbage near the depot. They took it and left. Trader profit was someting like 45k dorfbucks.
... woah, that goblin civilization has a plump helmets as its symbol. So this is the reason why do they keep attacking! They want our plump helmets, since they can't grow them by themselves!
Nearly every single iron mail shirt and helm has a symbol of gobbo civ in it. This may break some of the Geneva conventions...
And, speaking of them, the executions of the prisoners are not going well. Since we have few dwarves and incredible amount of hauling, I didn't dump their weapons. I dropped some into the yeti/cat -room. Yetis suck. They are idiots. They made that one goblin elite wrestler. Military killed those goblins. Also, I used the siegers as a live archery targets and engraved some fortifications at the room with those hovering stones.
Then I made some "open goblin cages in the middle of training session" -executions. They weren't effective. Neither was my giant clothing dumping campaign or animal butchering operation. Keets are hatching faster than we can butcher them. So the anwer is...
So far I've atom smashed 33 animals. We have about 70 animals left, most of them ordered for butchering (except war animals and yetis). This makes me remember one fort where I atom smashed children. I learned about tantrum spirals in that same fort.
I wondered why no one was dumping stuff into my atom smasher, so I decided to follow one dumper. I found some stupid chute. I think it was used for dumping seeds for farms or something. Well, that chute wass full of everything. I deleted that grbage dump and smashing begun.
Also, it's hilarious to pasture animals on a lowered drawbridge and then pull the lever... Animals fly everywhere.
Why do we have two human diplomats here? I didn't care much about them, we don't have any need for trade agreement. Other one came and said something about ending the war. What war? Do we have a war with humans? Hell, I'm probably the best overseer ever. I don't even know with whom we are at war. And speaking of war, siege arrived. So those diplomats weren't able to leave. That siege also killed a dwarf caravan. One speardwarf-merchant charged in a martial trance into a goblin marksman squad. He was killed. But hey, he kept fighting with at least six arrows in his body. That's a lot better than Sean Bean ever.
Another merchat hammerdwarf bashed the brains of two trolls into the snow and made whole troll squad retreat from the map. Then he was shot down.
Oh, some marksdwarf hammered that berserk-diplomat till death.
And now begins the part which was so large scandal that I had to resing from the overseer's position.
I ordered goblins to be dropped from my apartments. It was a drop of 7 z-levels.
And it was the most chaotic and embarassing execution ever. Hardly any of the goblins were even harmed. I still don't understand how that was even possible.
Also, those falling mechanisms nearly killed half of my military. And then there was a goblin elite lasher.
Oh, and then there was a fcking minecart. Which had killed two dwarves already.
Half of the military had to go into the hospital because of this execution. Some goblins even escaped to the ice halls and caused massive job cancellation spam.
And then this happened. A goblin hammerman versus a marksdwarf Kikrost Matchcobalt. One speargoblin had severd his hand. And then that hammerman attacked. They were far way from the other dwarves (most of the military was hunting down that speargoblin). I was sure that the goblin would kill that marksdwarf.
Kikrost disagreed with me and proceeded with bashing that goblin with his crossbow eventually becoming a hammerdwarf. Goblin tried to flee. Enraged Kikrost ran after him and fell him into the icy floor. They wrestled. Neither of them was able to kill the other one. The tie was broken by a swordsdwarf, who came and killed a goblin.
Also... at the final day of my reign, there was a depressed human diplomat who tried to kill himself by jumping off the cliff. In the room of the MAGICAL HOVERING STONES. He fell into the hospital and broke many bones. Sadly he didn't died.
So situation now: We have something like 60 dwarves (casualties came from minecart accidents and failed execution) and many in the hospital. Military is sparring and armed with adamantine. There is a siege waiting outside. We have a plenty of everything. I have pastured the most of our animals to the atom smasher, but it takes a time until dwarves have pastured everyone there. We have many cool cave crocodiles. Maybe we could start a taming/breeding program?
We're drowning into the prisoners. Maybe someone could make a magma drowner and bring every singe prisoner there? I'm pretty sure that those ~160 stupid useless units (the animals and the prisoners) are on of the main banes of the FPS. It was now 66 when I arrived to the spring.
SAVEGAME HERE. WHO WANTS TO BE THE NEXT SUCKER TO RULE THIS HELLHOLE? ANY VOLUNTEERS? (http://www.mediafire.com/?4ly8e46a20axy9n)
Someone dorf me.
The next overseer will, I noticed this after I had already uploaded the save...
Diary of Leon Slothsky, 14th Granite, 101.
Only two weeks have passed, and a new age has dawned in Amberjewel. The jubilant workers cheer every new policy proposal, but I know the revolution has yet to begin in earnest. Until now, my time has been occupied with both addressing the immediate needs of the fortress, and putting the right dwarfs in the right places; we must have a functioning ruling party to steady the ship while we sail the seas of reform. The gates of the fortress are shut tight that we might turn our collective eyes inward to cut out the rot inside us. We are a caterpillar in its newly-formed cocoon, just starting on the journey of metamorphosis. The other benefit to the gates being shut is that I don't have to admit to anyone that I don't know the location of the lever.
Here is a brief summary of the most notable personnel changes within the fortress.
Promotions:
Shey: This Novice Hammerdwarf has two good qualities. Initiative, and faith in the revolution. When the time came to depose Matoro, he convinced his squad to stand aside while he got his hands dirty helping out. However, he's not a good soldier, and he's not very bright. This combination of attributes make him uniquely qualified to my new Hammerer.
Ivanna: a one-handed hammerdwarf and marksdwarf with a keen intellect and many talents. A previous member of the fortress guard under Matoro, I had considered giving her his position as Captain. I've since reconsidered and made her the Militia Commander, a position whose responsibilities are distinctly less political. Note: Ivanna is a loner with no friends, and is currently unhappy following the loss of her hand.
Xenia: A no-nonsense dwarf with a soldier's constitution, Xenia is also the skilled shooter of a 2-man sniper team. She will be my hand-picked captain of the guard. Her partner, a former "Yeti Whisperer," will join her once he's recovered from his broken arm. She will also be joined by Bruce Wayne in policing the fortress, however he is ALSO bedridden at the moment.
Myself, Leon Slothsky: Perhaps the trickiest promotion of all to consider. As a popular usurper following an unpopular predecessor, I must assume the reigns of command, legitimize my rule, and institutionalize my power while simultaneously setting clear distinctions between myself and my predecessor. I have chosen to do this by assuming (and empowering) the previously quiet job of Fortress Manager. This clearly places me in the role of civilian administrator, and distinguishes me from Matoro, who took the job of Guard Captain to disastrous effect. My role in defense and criminal justice will be in terms of personnel decisions only, and the "soft" power that comes with that.
Demotions:
Matoro: Public enemy #1, the previous overseer of Amberjewel. He has estranged both the military and the populace with his bungling. Killing him outright would not be palatable, and letting him wander the fortress at will too dangerous. He has been stripped of authority and possessions and locked in a windowless ice-cell at the top of the ice-pyramid. His doom shall be determined later.
"Toady": His previous name has been stricken from records. He shall be officially known as Toady, so that his position and role in Matoro's tenure may be remembered. He was the manager, bookkeeper, and appraiser. He is now relegated to full-time refuse hauling.
Ike: Former militia commander under Matoro, he is neither a skilled soldier nor natural leader. He has been relieved of duties and reassigned to full-time refuse hauling ARMORSMITHING, since I have just been informed he's a grand master in the art. From each according to his abilities....
Casser: Former mayor, his weeping departure from office is immortalized in a gold statue. They were but crocodile tears, as Casser is a shameless dwarf without skill or responsibility. Having left the office of mayor long ago, he retained his palacial living quarters and extravagant possessions. He has been stripped of both and reduced refuse hauling duty, although once the need of his labor has diminished, this robber-baron may join Matoro in prison.

Other Personnel Concerns:
Rakust the Mayor has been left in his position. Under Matoro this job had few responsibilities as well as term limits. Rakust is no threat despite his popularity, and shall be left in his position. For now, he has been relieved of all other duties so that he may assist in counseling those dwarfs distraught over injury, loss, or stench.
The Chief Medical Dwarf, Njals, came to me last week in a quiet moment to make an urgent request. "The situation in the hospital is dire," he began. "There are numerous military and civilian wounded who need immediate attention, but there are only two skilled doctors in the whole fortress!" He began to elaborate but I interrupted him.
"Show me."
(http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/Slothen/Hospital.jpg) (http://s632.photobucket.com/user/Slothen/media/Hospital.jpg.html)
I took stock of the situation. It didn't seem all that dire, aside from some vomit on the floor and the meager supplies There was even soap! "No no, its much worse," Njals insisted. "This isn't even half of them. The new Hammerer is bedridden in a jail with a broken arm, and there are injured dwarves sleeping all over the fortress! Its just me and Dr. House; we need some dedicated nurses to fetch them water and change their bandages!" I granted his request and assigned two nurses to the medical team, to be at the sole direction of Dr. Njals and Dr. House. He also felt the need to clarify that the vomit was from a human that's been wandering the fortress, not one of his patients. I began to respond that it wasn't a huge concern of mine, when I was interrupted by a cackling far above me.
(http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/Slothen/human.jpg) (http://s632.photobucket.com/user/Slothen/media/human.jpg.html)
The hospital has a tall vaulted ceiling extending nearly up to the surface, for some reason. I could make out the human leaning over a ledge, high above. "Green icky for sickly ickle icebeards! Riggle baba yabbo maru!" He retched again. The hot sick dropped 60 feet through space to land all over an unfortunate hauler with a broken foot. I made a note to have Slays test out the strength of his hammer-arm on this guy once his wounds heal. With Njals satisfied, I proceeded to tour the rest of the fortress.
The state of refuse disposal in this fortress is abominable. I've counted no less than eight... EIGHT... large trash heaps, all of them underground, unventillated, and unsequestered from the rest of the fortress. All of them filled with an assortment of bodies, skeletons, rotting organs, and rancid fat. This isn't even counting the half dozen enclosed kitchens and butcher's shops filled with rotting foodstuff. Assigning the former manager to full-time refuse hauling was truly a pragmatic stroke of ironic brilliance, if I do say so myself.

What is a keet, why do we have them, and why are there a dozen of them in the main dining hall? Hopefully they taste good, because I am ordering all the keets to be butchered.
(http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/Slothen/Keets.jpg) (http://s632.photobucket.com/user/Slothen/media/Keets.jpg.html)
Also, we have a mason's workshop and a trash/animal compactor INSIDE the dining hall. Furthermore the trash compactor has two levers next to it. I wonder what the purpose could be (note: the lever on the right DEFINITELY controls the keet-crusher). I may decomission the keet-crusher at a later date, but for now I will designate the danger zone a restricted area to spare the fortress further loss of able-bodied workers.

It has been two weeks and barely a dent has been made in the refuse piles throughout the fortress. Our population is low, the corridors long and winding, and the amount of shit to be moved is massive. However, things are looking up, I've managed to consolidate the dumping zones to reasonable locations, and the workers are actually moving bodies to the garbage chute and the compactor instead of dumping them in the hallway in various locations as they had been doing [OOC: half a dozen prisoner-stripping dump zones were scattered about, I think that's been handled].
The issues relating to hospitals and the wounded are not so cheery. One of the nurses I assigned to assist Njals and House has died of dehydration. Apparently "Bim" was among the wounded and unable to feed herself, much less be of any assistance to others. A healthy replacement has been assigned.

A snow storm has come.
How do I know this? One would think it would be from looking out the windows of my office, but this is not so. I am in fact in my office, which is nearly the highest point in the fortress. My office does in fact have windows, from which I might see the sun rise and set over the endless expanse of glacial ice. Why then did it require a dwarf to inform me for me to be aware that a snowstorm has come? The answer of course, is that there is a five foot snowdrift already blocking my windows from last week's snowstorm. I have made a note among my files to have the windows cleaned and that feature of the office redesigned. Sadly, it may be many months before I can spare myself such a luxury. There are yet more pressing matters at hand...
Garbage collection is still proceeding steadily and the most immediate task on the collective agenda. Any change in leadership must start with cleaning, and the detritus of years of accumulated mishaps must be swept away. The garbage chute is performing admirably, however I had an idea to increase its efficiency. One option was to extend it several levels upward toward the open ice-cavern above the fortress, below the glacier's surface. It is here where the biggest garbage heaps lay. Instead, I opted for the simpler procedure of adding a stairway directly from this level downward to the top of the garbage chute. Since both areas are well within the outer defenses, the security vulnerability posed should be minimal. I shall instruct the mechanics to install cage traps once its completed.

Having ordered this, it came to my attention that there are only THREE skilled miners in the entire fortress. THREE!?!?!? This is a ridiculous situation. We are a respectable settlement of sixty fifty-nine dwarfs, and only three have EVER held a pick. We may be a diverse group of migrants and misfits, but where I come from, practically everyone has done a bit of mining at some point in their life. In addition to our three expert miners, I will be selecting five part-time miners from a list of volunteers.
I've attended to some preliminary labor reforms. Matoro's top-down philosophy for the division of labor was ignorant of the value of each particular dwarf, and nowhere was this more evident than in the monolithic "Smith" classification. Matoro's system had our master armorsmith Ike making swords and our master weaponsmith Wolfgrim making shields! Both of them were making gold statues ( we really don't need these right now, we have plenty already ) instead of our journeyman blacksmith Betsy (although Wolfgrim is still slightly better than her at that). As of yesterday, the "smith" classification is no more, in favor of the more granular and flexible system of armorer/weaponsmith/metalsmith. Critical jobs such as armor and weaponcrafting shall be restricted to the resident experts. Furthermore, all dwarves with a metal-industry job shall be collectively responsible for smelter operation. When I broke the news to them in a private meeting, they were all very pleased, well, except for Thob, who liked doing a bit of everything. Maybe if I have her make 50 golden trumpets she'll realize that crafts and toys are her true calling. Lastly, there are only a handful of metal-workers, which is why I thought it would be a good place to start implementing my reforms while the rest of the fortress hauls garbage.
While I'm on the topic of metal, a brief summary. Matoro left us with large enough stockpiles of copper, silver, gold, bronze, lead, and tin to last years. There's also a good stock of adamantine thread extracted which I've ordered to be smelted into usable wafers. I don't have anything particular in mind, I just want to make sure House doesn't use it for experimental treatments on our wounded and helpless hospital population. Iron and steel is in short supply, but the upshot is that we have large quantities of marble, as well as iron armor and weapons from dead and imprisoned goblins. It will be labor intensive to get it all melted, but for now I've at least sorted through some of it. Because of the large quantities of copper, I have halted all melting of copper, bronze, and silver items for the foreseeable future. We simply don't have the dwarf hours to waste.
Speaking of dwarf-hours, the fortress remains under strict and absolute lockdown. Traders, siegers, and diplomats will be turned away without being given the time of day. The ONLY exception will be migrants.
While I'm on the topic of labor and fortress population, the current count of bedridden or otherwise injured dwarves is at nine. If we exclude the fortress's four children, the four-dwarf medical team, that leaves only forty-two able bodied dwarfs. However, I have no complaints of the medical team, which are working day-and-night. At the moment Dr. House is performing a complicated reparative surgery on a nasty compound fracture of the foot and ankle sustained by Obok, a rather scrawny speardwarf. I'm told she is handling her convalescence well.
(http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/Slothen/Surgery.jpg) (http://s632.photobucket.com/user/Slothen/media/Surgery.jpg.html)
I've ended the standing order to make rock statues and issued a standing order to make ice blocks. Tosid the mason tells me this is impossible. Fine. Whatever. Nevermind. That's why he's a mason and I'm an overseer.
The Yetis are restless. They continue to give birth to semi-wild yeti offspring. Someone is supposed to be keeping them in line but I don't know who. I don't really care either. They're all in a pen, so I'm not too concerned. On the whole, domestic animal populations have plummeted, the the general satisfaction of my self and the fortress. I think most of them starved in their cages.

Migrants have arrived. Praise Kirar (my diety, associated with loyalty)! They mayor himself went to open the gates to greet them.

With a (another) snowstorm at their backs, in trudged 10 freezing dwarfs. Not as many as I'd like to see, but I'm not complaining, considering how small our population is currently, 10 new able-bodied dwarfs is a significant boon. A few millers, potash makers, a butcher, some novice metalworkers and such, nothing too outstanding, however one is an experienced surgeon and bone doctor, and another has some military training. I introduced Dr. Imel to Dr. Njals and sent him on his way immediately, Njals is competent enough to handle the rest. As for the other migrants, I introduced myself briefly and had the mayor give them the grand tour. I whispered to Mayor Rakust on my way out to be sure to show them the trash heaps and the garbage chute.

The fortress has been successfully resealed. With the arrival of additional workers and the additional doctor, and due to the hard work of our medical team, we should be able to reorganize and reinstate the fortress militia, fortress guard, and return the fortress alert level to normal. There are still eight five patients in hospital, but they have made great progress. Many have spent weeks or months in traction or have undergone surgery. The doctors do have one complaint, and that is that the water they take to their patients freezes in the bucket after the first use. In a moment of exasperation unbecoming of an overseer, I told Njals to fuck off and feed them magma for all I cared. It wasn't my decision to build the worker's paradise on the frozen ass-end of the world.
Two of the new migrants immediately started playing with a gold minecart as if it was his own toy and not a piece of deadly fortress equipment. They have been reprimanded in addition to their minor injuries. I have reiterated the standing order forbidding the use or relocation of minecarts without my express permission.

[OOC: lastly, I'm a bit too tired to figure out a way to comment on this in character, but I've noticed some unusual behavior/bug that I'd thought I would share here. Basically two dwarfs have had the "rest" job on a table, the same table, for a long time (many months). I'm sure you can figure something from the dates, as it seems like the one brought later has been getting treatment but the one brought sooner isn't getting treatment anymore. I'll continue to observe. I haven't been watching like a hawk, but they've both been on that table for awhile.

Well, I've had Amberjewel nearly two weeks and only gotten through spring instead of an entire year. I enjoyed playing and putting out the two updates so far, but I think it would be unfair for me to hold onto the game for however long it would take me to finish the in-game year. I'll provide a few updates and tidbits here to bring the next overseer up to speed.
-end of spring, elves showed up, followed immediately by an ambush. Gates were never opened, gobbos are chasing camels around through the snow. The next overseer can attempt to get the marksdwarves equipped and put one in the sniper nest, or just open the gates and let the traps go to work, but be sure to double check burrows first as there are tons of socks outside.
(http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/Slothen/ambush.jpg) (http://s632.photobucket.com/user/Slothen/media/ambush.jpg.html)
- most of the garbage is dumped, but the entire fortress is obsessed with transfering all our adamantine strands to the hospital 100 z-levels away.
- Yetis have been going semi-wild.
- The dwarf I dwarfed for me has been in traction for my entire turn, the two dwarfs sharing the same table left the hospital with no intervention from me. Military is mostly healed but mostly unquipped. There is plenty of equipment and means to produce more.
- Food and drink production has continued to be suspended. Minotaur labyrinth suspended due to being designated under a lake.
