Shouldn't this be in the general discussion or life advice section?

Just let it run then, things tend to go to custard before to long if you do that, or they have for me anyway.

A wise idea. While in some respects dwarfs are still complete idiots, in others they are far too clever. Of course which is which is subjective, which is why a slider would indeed by useful, if probably a bit impractical to implement.

Do they actually serve a function if they are defined though, or is removing defined organs so deadly only because of the trauma required to remove them. Eg, is removing a liver from a dwarf only dangerous because removing a dwarfs liver requires stabbing them with a sharp piece of metal, or would the dwarf still die even if you just magically removed the organ with dfhack.

But the additional stress could still be enough to push him over the edge if he's otherwise stressed out, though this is more of a concern in some forts than others(and is also much less of a concern in more recent versions where dwarfs seem to be intrinsically cheerful, than it was back in the day). Even if it takes years for this to happen, its still a concern as highly skilled clothiers don't exactly grow on trees.

Alas, i only had one dragon. Really, in retrospect i properly should not have trained the dragon, as if i had not trained it my dwarfs would have happily butchered it after it was killed, rather than just leaving it to rot on the floor.

Locked my dragon in a cage in a room which i connected to the untouched first cavern layer, which was untouched due to web-spewing forgotten beast made of glass. Once i had closed the room off i unleashed the dragon, which killed proceeded to melt the forgotten beast. I then reopened the room(there was a hallway which allowed the dwarf doing the deconstructing to survive), and sent in my military, who after six and a half years, finally avenged their comrades who fell in the dragons first assault. It was a quick and easy battle, with no losses on my part.

And so now the rich gold veins of the first cavern are ripe for the taking!

Don't get greedy with the caster. Only one level at a time.

I find that plumbing in a set amount of magma first, then dumping water on top, has the best results.

Pockets of unreacted water are less harmful to dwarves.

This would be a fine way to approach the problem, if only i was not working in the magma sea. At any rate the problem was i had not channeled out some of the tiles which water needed to flow into to turn the magma in the first layer of magma sea into obsidian, which left some magma pockets.

I built a obsidian caster to turn the magma surrounding the candy vanes into obsidian, allowing me to gain better access to the stuff. Alas, due to some design flaws there were still a few pockets of magma in the obsidian cast, which has forced me to drain the thing of water and do some more work. This is a quite a common thing with my grand projects, i build them, and then have to spend just as long correcting the design flaws so they work properly.

You can play the arena likes it a beat-em' up already. Just create a few other creatures and yourself, and to place weapons around the map you can create cats with whatever equipment you want to place in that location, since creatures without a grasp drop equipment straight away.

In the new map Iceland seems like a much nicer place. In the first map the place was a bleak glacier with naught but goblins for company.

I feel like I've asked this before, but can't recall getting an answer or not. In legends/asking about yourself it lists rumored/known protector of the weak and being told about you challenging various bandits/killing them/etc, but I've yet to see if this exhibits progression like hero/hunter/performer. Is there a great/legendary/famous/anything progression for "Protector of the Weak" fame?
Thinking about it, if it was a material property factor as well, dark towers made out of slade would be the utmost safest place to hide because they are unmovable spare structurally taking it apart laboriously piece by piece, if a bronze collossus kicked it at full force it'd probably disjoint its leg.
Spoiler: Piece by piece eh? (click to show/hide)
Bwahahaha, fear me, for I am Daturtharnas!
What did you even do?

If you don't like hauling things up from the depths of the earth, then perhaps making the depths less deep could help? Using advanced world gen you could make it so that the magma sea is only 20 or 30z levels down, allowing you to  build your magma forges on it without having to spend an insane time hauling like you would if you built your forges on a deep magma sea.

The long awaited goblin invasion finally. They were about 150 strong, with beak dogs and trolls, and my military was finally able  the enemy on the open plain. We won, though we lost 5 soldiers(though 2 were mercenarys), and another fellow lost the ability to stand(though a crutch soon fixed that). With that over with, the cleanup is now underway. All of my idlers are now gainfully employed hauling troll fur socks to the atom-smasher.
