Title: Shadow of the Demon Lord - IC Thread - Game Start!
Post by: Sirus on February 25, 2019, 05:26:45 pm
Tomrik's Hollow.

A bustling community in the Northern Reaches, ringed by stone walls to ward away the occasional rebel group or beastman raid, and surrounded by farmland to the east and the Dark Wood to the west.
Founded by and named for the great hero Gregorius Tomrik, it has grown from a single muddy street into the center of local commerce and culture. His descendant, Gunther Tomrik, rules the town as lord.
Nominally still part of the Empire, Tomrik's Hollow finds itself mostly standing on its own. Aside from the great coastal city of Gateway, there exists no other significant military force in the region.
This far from the Alabaster Throne, the chaos and upheaval caused by the orc uprising is almost nonexistent. People go about their business as usual, just with perhaps a bit more apprehension than normal.
This, as with so many things, is about to change.

The Dusty Duck was a perennial favorite among the locals and vagabonds of Tomrik's Hollow. Its drinks weren't the best, but nor were they the cheapest. The food was adequate, but neither particularly moldy nor particularly exquisite. The wenches, while pretty enough, were not for hire like in a couple of the grungier watering holes along the docks. But it was the oldest tavern/inn in town, and that lent it a certain prestige that none of the other establishments could match.

The tavern was lively on this fine Summer evening. A group of halflings from Good Fortune were singing (loudly and out of tune) around an extinguished fireplace. The serving girls were kept busy bringing tankards of ale and plates of food to a number of tables. A dwarf sat on one end of the bar, examining a strange tome. The bartender nodded welcome to a well-built woman in a red cloak while completely missing another, younger-seeming woman that managed to slip in unnoticed.

Everyone gave the large orc in the corner a wide berth. Although she was alone, and the majority of the orc rebels were raising havoc down south, no one wanted to set this one off.

Imrak, Raina, Maraline, and Hate are in!

As she walks in, Raina responds to the nod and addresses the barkeeper, beaming.

"Henry! I'll have a cup of the good stuff, the real good stuff, for myself and Maraline. Today's a good day!"

Having failed for some time to catch a serving girl’s eye, Hate got up and ambled over to the bar, waiting to order. She was quiet for such an imposing form.

”Beer.

Please.”

She tried to look bored rather than wary: she was planning to leave at midnight to acquire and deliver a set of fairly fresh internal organs. It meant she could afford to drink, but that she probably shouldn’t… In the meantime, she was happy to be left alone.

Henry waves in acknowledgement. "Two cups, coming up! One for you and one for...ah, if it isn't young miss Stukberg! I warn you now, young lady, that I counted the coins in the till!" The barkeep added the last sentence in a mock-serious tone of voice, wagging a finger even as he smiled. He and Maraline's father had gone back quite a ways.

"And, ah, coming right up ma'am. Just as soon as I tend to these two." The much-smaller Henry put on a brave face but clearly was unused to having 7-foot orcs in his tavern.

Imrak averts his eyes from his book long enough to disdainfully regard the other patrons, before returning to the important and pressing matter of ignoring everything.

He grumbles softly to himself through his whiskers, absentmindedly patting the coarse hairs with a spare hand.

"Cheers, Raina."
Maraline Stukberg was a diminutive figure - even compared to the other humans in the bar, never mind the seven-foot orc that loomed up as she approached the bar.
Despite that, the girl snorted at the barkeep's comment.
"Yeah, sure, Henry. Now was it twenty coins you had? Nineteen? Oh, look, musta been three."
She grinned cheekily, wrapping her hands around the cup the older man handed her.

Before Henry can finish serving, however, there's a commotion outside.

"--again! That's a dozen gone missing this month! I'm not gonna put up with this pigshit one more day, I'll tell you!"

Into the Dusty Duck bursts an older man in the raggedy clothing of a farmer. He is quite clearly agitated, and also quite clearly not entirely sober. Henry puts down a tankard with a sigh. "Evenin', Dawls. What are you making a racket over this time?"

"It's my goats, dammit! Another one went missing last night! No blood, no broken fences, no nothing! Just gone!"

"Ye sure ye didn't just get the count wrong again, eh Dulls?!" a wit among the patrons shouts. Dawls stops ranting in order to glare unsteadily at the crowd.

Post by: Sirus on February 28, 2019, 07:25:12 pm
Apparently unable to find the heckler, Dawls climbs onto a chair so he can be heard above the general din.

"I'm tellin' ya! Someone's stealing my goats, and I want the bastard caught! I've got money! Catch whoever is doing it and bring 'em to justice, and I'll pay everyone involved a silver shilling! I swear on my ancestors!"

A few people look interested now, but most are either cracking jokes or returning to their drinks. Henry attempts to draw Dawls down off of his chair.

"A shilling, you say, for what sounds like an easy job? We'll just have to think like goat thieves, or perhaps like goats. That's something you can do, right, Maraline?"

Raina gives Maraline a knowing smile as she drinks, slightly wincing at the alcohol's strength, before talking a little quieter.

"Though given how I've heard Dawls treats his goats, it wouldn't be a wonder if they've just run away or something. Wouldn't be the first time. Still, easy money for a bit of wrangling. What do you think?"
Title: Re: Shadow of the Demon Lord - IC Thread - Game Start!
Post by: lawastooshort on March 01, 2019, 03:55:19 am
Hate hesitated. A shilling? And silver? Real silver? That sounded nice. But getting involved with missing anything could mean a narrowly escaped angry mob for an obvious seven foot tall brute. Even here, everybody knew that orcs were untrustworthy good-for-nothings, right? Only good for the filthy work no one else might want to do. Corpses, cabbages, and sewers. Probably not as far as goats.

She looked at the two human women in a way she hoped might suggest interest but absolutely no prior involvement whatsoever no sir.

Raina looks at Hate, noting the interest.

"Ah, madame Orc, you want to join in? Well, if it's a shilling for everyone, not a split, I don't see why to refuse help. Heh, if you're as strong as orcs usually are, bet you could lift a goat in each hand and just carry them into the woods..."

Post by: lawastooshort on March 01, 2019, 05:05:38 am
"I- I didn't do that!"

Hate realised it wasn't an accusation.

"Yes, I would, thank you... I probably could..."

She looked down at her beer. Were those blushes or blotches?

"Never seen an orc blush before," Maraline remarked, doubtlessly reducing the embarassment Hate was feeling. "That said, if you had nicked the goats it'd be easy money gettin' them back, yeah? And if not... well, there might need to be some head-bashing or somethin'. "

She nodded, obviously decided, before she raised her voice.
"'Ey, Dawls! If you're bein' honest about that shillin', me and Raina and big green 'ere, we'll find your goats. Or maybe their bones. But we'll look for you."

Scowling fiercely, Imrak slams his book shut and hops down from the barstool, straightening himself to his full height of nearly four feet.

"Incessant disruptions! Can't you see that I'm working on something important?! Even the lowest dwarfish drinking halls carried more poise than this lawless cacophony! By my beard, you'd never see a Bronzecudgel carrying on like this and disturbing a place of leisure! We have some decency... And a Bronzecudgel digs deeper into his cups than any other!"

Slightly distracted by his own boasting, he puffs himself up even more.

"And furthermore! There's no sense searching for wayward goatseekers when a dwarf clearly stands before you! No other race carries greater kinship with the caprine kind; dwarfs have tended goats since before the lesser mountains ground down to the valleys you now colonize... Indeed, from the rock came the dwarf, and from the dwarf came the goat; their bearded heritage showing as proudly as our own. Why, my grand-uncle Gjermund is the finest goatherd in the mountainhomes, singlehandedly raising hundreds of the finest dairy goats for near on two centuries!"

Still scowling but clearly quite pleased with himself, Imrak strides over to the goatherd and stands at attention.

"I, Imrak of the Bronzecudgels, respected scholar and famed orator, humbly accept the terms of your request. And as a sign of my generosity, I'll even handle the necessary legalities free of charge."

Pulling the requisite materials from the writing kit in his pack, Imrak begins drawing up a contract.

"Full name and place of residence...?"

"Hey now, mister, don't try to get this to be just your job. It's a shilling for everyone involved, so surely you wouldn't mind a bit of teamwork? Imrak, was it? I'm Raina."

Raina extends her hand for a shake as she looks down at the contract Imrak is writing. Upside down, of course, but is the document in any language she knows either way?
Title: Re: Shadow of the Demon Lord - IC Thread - Game Start!

Imrak looks up at Raina, looks at her hand, looks back at her face, contemplates briefly, then turns back to the contract with a grumble. He starts drawing up a section mentioning "adequate compensation" for "secondary actors" that are "employed in a cooperative capacity".

As for the legibility of the document, that depends on Raina's experience with legalese. It's written in Common though, at least nominally.

The urchin viewed the dwarf doubtfully.
"Well, you do look kinda like a goat, but we got 'ere first. Sop you're the one comin' along with us, rather than the other way round."

She glanced at Raina, then shrugged and grinned a little. If the dwarf thought he could cheat them out their coin, he'd learn just how much that bit of paper was worth.
Title: Re: Shadow of the Demon Lord - IC Thread - Game Start!
Post by: Kagus on March 02, 2019, 05:58:13 am
Imrak sighs and rubs his brow in exasperation.

"Listen, if you'd prefer to enter into an undefined oral agreement with this gentleman, with no guarantee or collateral on payment and no legal recourse in the event of complications, medical or otherwise, that's your choice to make."

He puts his hand down and looks up.

"Historically? Not a very good precedent for that decision. Now, no one knows better than a Bronzecudgel the value of rewarded assistance, so if I might be allowed to finish outlining these protections and assurances...?"

Hate sidles over, trying to peer over a shoulder.

"The paper... makes him promise?"
Title: Re: Shadow of the Demon Lord - IC Thread - Game Start!
Post by: Sirus on March 02, 2019, 10:19:14 am
"Ain't never had to sign no paper in all my life," Dawls grumbles. "Swore on my ancestors, I did. 'Sides, you could write anything you want on that paper and I wouldn't know it until you kicked me out of my own farm, or something."

Henry, sensing an argument, stepped in. "Dawls has been lived here his whole life. He ain't the sharpest tack, but he's always come through on his promises. I don't imagine that he'd try to cheat any of you, but if he does you come see me. I'll make sure you're recompensed for your trouble."

Dawls, apparently missing the earlier insult, beams with pride at the notion that he's honest.

"Aw, thank you kindly good sirs and ma'ams. Blessings of Astrid upon ye. Follow me; my farm's outside the walls but we oughta be able to get there before it gets too late. I'll put you up for the night, and show you around in the morning so you can get to work finding that damned thief."

Dawls waits patiently for his four helpers to toss back their drinks, then leads them through the streets of Tomrik's Hollow to the eastern gate. After a short conversation with the guards (which mostly consists of "watch yourselves out there") they are let out into the sprawling community surrounding the city proper. Here, those too poor to afford a home within the walls - or have trades that require a lot of space that only the wider world can provide - live in the hopes that they can seek refuge when trouble comes to call.

"It's this way!" Dawls calls over his shoulder. He leads the group further away from the gates, to the outskirts of the community where tightly-packed buildings give way to pastures and farm plots. Eventually, after the sun has finally vanished from the sky, he marches up a dirt path towards the wooden hovel he apparently calls home. A large shaggy dog comes out to greet everyone, barking wildly but not acting even remotely aggressively.

"Get down, Mop! Damned dog. Don't mind him, he's as dangerous as he is useful. Hasn't caught the thief even once." Mop takes exactly zero notice of the insult. He's more interested in sniffing at Raina.

"Right, well, I don't exactly have much space in here. You four can kip in the barn." Dawls points to a larger structure, also made of wood, looming on the edge of visibility in the deepening night. "Ain't much, but it's dry and there's blankets. I'll show you around in the morning."

Dawls looks startled at the suggestion.

"Well, I guess that makes sense. They ain't yet hit two nights in a row, though. Well, if you wanna stay awake all night I'm not gonna stop you. The goats are over this way." The farmer walks a short distance past the barn towards a fenced-in pasture. The goats are barely discernible to people without darkvision, but those who can see clearly in the dark can make out several dozen goats clustered about, clearly settling in for the night. Aside from the occasional bray, the animals are silent.

"Looks like a simple thing to watch over them from here. How about this? We split into pairs and each pair keeps watch while the other sleeps. Or, hm..."

Raina sees thoughtful for a moment.

"I suppose for it to work we'll need to build pairs that can work together... Can we do that? That would mean not calling the other person a barbarian, dwarf."

"Everyone thinks orc means barbarian, so Hate and the dwarf can go together, less damage done when he calls me barbarian. You can sleep together, and he can tell me about papers that make promises... I am not afraid."

Hate extends a hand.

"Hate, at your service, milord dwarf sir."

"I suppose for it to work we'll need to build pairs that can work together... Can we do that? That would mean not calling the other person a barbarian, dwarf."
Bristling at the slur, Imrak replies "Oh would it now? Does it also mean not acting like barbarians? Or is that too much to ask of this merry band?"

Hate extends a hand.

"Hate, at your service, milord dwarf sir."

Imrak eyes the hand warily. "Imrak. Of the Bronzecudgels." he states curtly. "And I suppose the fact that you didn't flee at the mention of the name means you're not from the Horned Skulls, and I have no personal quarrel with you. But even so..."

He straightens himself up to be as imposing as it's possible to be when craning one's neck to address someone who is roughly twice one's height.

"...don't think for a moment that I have forgotten Guldurak. Nor forgiven."

Apparently satisfied with his dramatic performance, he adopts a more pragmatic tone.

"And asides; last I recall from my teachings, orcs have better darkvision than most humans. Still not as good as a dwarf, but perhaps it might be prudent to not let the two blind ones try to keep watch at the same time?"

"Oh. I would have liked to hear about the promise-papers, but that's true, I can see well in the grubby dim."

Hate turns back to the two young women and then back to the dwarf.

"Well."

Pick me, pick me! she thought, whilst hoping no one would.

"Who is Guldurak, Mr Imrak, and what did she do to you?"

Hate hoped it was a story of forbidden love gone wrong. The Damsel Guldurak and Brave Mr Imrak. Travelling story tellers didn't pass by Tomrik's Hollow half as much as they should, she thought, and far too often talked far too much about heroic humans fighting this that and the other. What nonsense. She secretly quite liked the more romantic tales - she liked to think it came naturally from being somewhat less brutish than the average orc lady. She could be almost refined, if she was given the chance.

"Oh, don't worry about that. It's not that dark, I can still see really well."
Maraline glanced in the other girl's direction. Already the gloom was transforming her into an umbral figure.
"You musta 'ad your carrots as a kid. I can' t see a damn thing,"  she griped.

She looked back at the orc and the dwarf, thoughtful.
On one hand, if there was anything nasty taking the goats, the orc was a six-foot-plus wall of beef - and the most likely to be able to thump whatever it was that popped up. On the other hand, the dwarf was even smaller than Maraline, so hopefully any predator would go for him first.

She laughed and stepped forward, tapping Hate on the stomach.

"Looks like me an' you are watch buddies, yeah? Long as you don't 'ave me for a midnight snack or anythin'."

Imrak nods pensively.

"Yes, yes, that's fine... You can watch the herd, I'll take a look around for spoor before the trail gets too cold. No sense waiting until the sun's out and making everything bright and miserable."

"Yes, yes, that's fine... You can watch the herd, I'll take a look around for spoor before the trail gets too cold. No sense waiting until the sun's out and making everything bright and miserable."

The dwarf quickly finds bootprints, hoofprints, and paw prints all over the place. The paw prints are (probably) from a dog, presumably Mop. Sadly, Imrak doesn't have any real experience in tracking and can't begin to determine which bootprints belong to Dawls and which might belong to someone else, or even himself or his newfound companions.

The hoofprints, meanwhile, seem to lead out from the pasture's gate. There are so many of them that tracking individual trails is sadly impossible to the dwarf's untrained eye.

The barn is, as Dawls said, nothing fancy. Rusty hand tools cover one workbench, and larger implements hang on the walls. A fenced-in stall with a collection of buckets must be where the nanny goats are milked. Maraline quickly deduces that most of these items would be entirely worthless in a monetary sense, except possibly as scrap metal.

A large wardrobe is filled with scratchy blankets, probably intended to keep the goats warm when winters grow harsh. There are more than enough for everyone in the barn. A ladder leads up to the barn's second level, which is mostly empty. Roughly a quarter of this level is covered in loose hay, likely the leftovers of the previous winter's goat feed. Still, there's enough to make simple beds for the night.

Buried under the hay, trying to keep a small white dog from giving away their hiding spot, lies a clockwork creature shaped something like a spider...

Weaver of Secrets is in!

Behind Maraline, Raina walks in for a quick look.

"Phew, not the the worst roof I've slept under. You going to be alright here if I keep looking around with Imrak? I'll come wake you and Hate up once it's your turn."

While talking, Raina looks around for an easy way to the barn's roof. Perhaps a hatch inside, or just a ladder outside? She's not going to climb up there just yet, but it'll be a decent vantage point once the group settles down for the night. Nearby trees might make for more covered spots as well, so she looks for any climbable ones nearby once she's done with Maraline and the barn. With both mercenary and rebel experience, where there was plenty of reason to be able to keep lookout from a hidden place, recognizing good ones shouldn't be difficult.

Tickled at making friends who are already calling her affectionate pet names, Hate follows Maraline into the barn to catch a nap.

"Shh, I know you don't like it but after things get quite we could take what we need and go, now we need to stay still"
Snow certainly doesn't like bread, but the dog is hungry and eventually settles into his meal. He starts fussing again when a massive orc comes up the ladder, but once the orc falls asleep Snow quiets down again.

There is no hatch for the roof, but Raina locates a ladder lashed to the barn's back wall. It's old, but it looks sturdy enough.

There are a number of trees along the border between Dawls' farm and the neighboring fields, but these are tall elms with the lowest branches a good eight feet off the ground. Climbable, but not without risk of a painful fall. A more likely prospect would be the old and gnarled pear tree around the side of Dawls' shack.

((Sorry I forgot, I thought others need to do stuff))
Take Snow and try to stay in the dark close to the edge of the barn until I get to the door.

Imrak checks the fence to see if it's up to standard.

It isn't, of course, but there are varying degrees of sub-dwarfiness.

The fence looks adequate to hold goats in, so long as they are not overly-interested in getting out. It's getting on in years and is made of wood, but at least it doesn't seem to be falling down anywhere.

Maraline inspected the blankets before she left them be in the interests of not being eaten alive by fleas, wrinkling her nose.

"Gah. Smells like goat ass."  she muttered as she climbed the ladder.
She plumped the hay into something approximately bed-shaped before she lay back, listening to the sounds of the night.

((Next time I leave the game inactive for so long, give me a swift kick to the gonads. I'm such a lazy slob sometimes.))

Dawls retreats to his shed, and the impromptu party settles down to wait out the night. A few hours pass. The moon rises high in the night sky, casting dim light over the sleeping community. All is quiet.

Until, that is, one of the watchers spots movement coming down the dirt lane. Two cloaked and hooded figures, probably men from their height and build, approach Dawls' property as quietly as they can. One of the figures throws something in the general direction of Mop, who quickly pounces on the object and appears to begin eating it.

With the guard dog distracted, the figures carefully open the pasture's gate and approach the sleeping goat herd. Perhaps these are the thieves?

Who is awake, and what will they do?
