Heh. The one upside of cat 5 hurricane going over my house? For a week or so light pollution around here was basically 0. Probably the most beautiful night skies I've seen in my life.

One of those things that drives home why light pollution is called pollution, ha.

Yeah, that just... doesn't make sense to me. There's plenty of jackets that are lighter than shirts, y'know?

3
... so a shacket is a jacket with really big pockets? Not being familiar with the term, that seems to be what images of it are saying.

E: Unrelated, just made sorta' braised chicken for the first time in, like... two years or something. Didn't have the really good stuff (unsalted teriyaki or sweet and sour sauce), but curried chicken with garlic and butter came out just fine. Dumped it in some wheat penne with a pile of cheese and some bacon bits, heh. Is good.

One of these days I'm going to actually braise something, but sorta' braising makes for really damn good chicken regardless of actually doing the whole "cook for hours" thing, so...

It's been a while, but I used to do that in college fairly often. Nothing weird about it, it can be pretty refreshing.

Just... maybe not when it's lightning, too. Just rain, no zappy.

Heh. I'm nearing 40, and the thing that's really started to get noticeable is that happiness without one... it's definitely possible, but easily? As your body slows down and breaks down, if you don't have some kind of pretty damn close relationship with someone, shit actually starts to get increasingly hard, and especially if you're not pretty fucking wealthy. It's damn rough, tbh, and just kind of compounds whatever other issues may have existed.

It's more about mutual support than anything to do with romantic love or relationships in that general region, but, well... most cultures that's the only way you find that kind of support, family of some sort. Stuff more distant than lovers or parents/children rarely seems to cut it, not that even those relationships are any sort of guarantee.

It's kinda' the rub, really. If you don't have someone that really cares about you, well. You don't have anyone that really cares about you. Y'know?

And if there's a society that's supportive towards folks like that, I don't know of it :-\

Does anyone know when people switched to using the lowercase m for million (10^6) instead of thousandth (10^-3)?

Every time I read it my brain hangs, even though it now seems ubiquitous.

Is this only in the US? Does metric media suffer from this?
Uh, some point before I was born? I don't think there's been a point in the last 30+ years I have meaningful memory that lowcase m on its own has been used for anything but million. I don't think I've ever seen it used for mili-stuff (which, yeah, as hec noted I've always seen used in conjunction with something else).

That's basically my entire interaction with rice cakes, ngl. From what I've seen the popped stuff is largely the same construction, somehow or another. There's actually ones that taste okay, but most of 'em... it's like eating cardboard and/or styrofoam.

And, like. I gnawed on plenty of things I probably shouldn't have when I was younger.

I'm making that comparison from experience, not hyperbole.

Being a planet, if it's tidally locked then it's tidally locked to the star it orbits. Because if it orbits a planet then it would be a moon!
As near as I can tell from the checking, that's not necessarily true! It'd be weird, but the current strict/IAU definition of planet (other definitions make it even easier, heh) doesn't seem to preclude one having a "cleared neighborhood" but still being tidally locked to a satellite, or something odder than that.

As I understand it, some of the forgiveness is not counted as income, but some is. I don't know the details.
As far as I can recall, it's neither consistent between jurisdictions nor types of loans.

There has been some concern over the (theoretical) forgiveness being taxed, because it does count as income under certain circumstances, but I don't remember it actually being that big of a concern (especially considering at the absolute worst you'd still be left with a debt a fraction of what it was) for (federal) student loans in particular.

You're assuming the folks in question don't understand the basic of loans, though. Intentional and malicious misinformation is entirely possible when you're dealing with that kind of mess, too.

Hey, GO didn't say anything about the planet being locked to the star, yeah?

The apparently most straightforward trick to it would be exactly that, still having a day/night cycle of some sort. Far as I'm aware there's nothing necessarily preventing a planet from functioning like that.

12
Fun fact checking on that turned up: Every moon in our solar system large enough to be round is tidally locked with the planet it orbits.

Of those? Seven apparently have atmo (including ours, if barely!), four thick enough to have weather.

So a larger orbiting body tidally locked in a habitable zone? If the conditions are right, that planet could have atmosphere. There's no guarantee of it, but it should be a possibility.

... the US independence day? Don't go with the labour anthem, go with the stateside one, maybe someone else can declare independence from the british that day, too :V

14
That's just a pokemon, though? Anoriths are more doofy than freaky :V

...I would definitely take that away from them, stray or not.
Yeah, I intend to if something hasn't happened to it overnight. Just didn't want to deal with cat pieces after work, ha. Going back to sleep right now 'cause five o'clock is too goddamn early no matter what my bladder thought (fuck getting older, bleeeeh), but some time after I wake up next I'll scrap it into the garbage can or somethin'.
