Title: *Spoilers* Got turned into [something unpleasant] - huh?
Post by: Anathema on January 16, 2011, 04:01:41 pm
So I'm trying to master adventure mode solo as a human demigod swordsman. For the record this is a fresh install of 31.18, a world generated with default settings, no modding, nothing changed except to add mayday graphics.

I was traveling near a frozen coastline between towns when darkness fell and 5ish bogeymen ambushed me - to make a long story short, I ran out across the glacier to escape them and eventually killed them one-by-one. But now I'm standing in the middle of a glacier and unable to travel; "You must move away from the water before you can travel."

Well, at this point I probably should've retraced my steps to the north, but I seemed to be halfway across this small bay and I was traveling south anyway, so I decided to continue south and cross the frozen bay. I walk.. and walk.. and walk.. for so long I suspect it's bugged somehow, seeing nothing but endless glacier and always unable to travel. Eventually I have to sleep, and continue walking through the day, until suddenly:

"You have discovered an eerie cavern. The air above the dark stone floor is alive with vortices of purple light and dark boiling clouds. Seemingly bottomless glowing pits mark the surface."

One moment, walking across a glacier, the next I'm in hell. It's populated by friendly demons which I can talk to (they don't have much interesting to say) and I am now "Average-sized for a horned devil" with no skills, no inventory, and a new set of attributes to match my new form (apparently devils have superior patience and high memory, but low social awareness. Go figure). Also, it appears I can fly. My description says:

"A great spider composed of salt. It has two long straight horns and it undulates rhythmically. Beware its poisonous bite!"

I've spent some time exploring hell, there does not appear to be a way out, or any quests or buildings or items or really anything at all except the glowing pits and the occasional friendly devil without anything interesting to say. For an adventurer, this is hell. What do I do now?

Build a fort, remove cotton candy, take over the world. Also, spoilers.

Ah good point, I forgot there are people that haven't discovered hell yet. Edited title. And I haven't managed to find any cotton candy - there's literally nothing here but glowing pits and demons.

Then try finding a demonic fortress.

Was that glacier around the southern border? As in, were you very close to it?

Nope, NW area of the map, but nowhere near the actual border. Also, just found cotton candy, although I can only fly one z-level up the shaft, there's an open space above me but I don't get the option to go up any farther. Exploring is difficult since it's apparently dark down here, I only get 3 tiles of sight in each direction.

Just upload the screenshots you take in game (i will assume you know how to do that) to http://img826.imageshack.us/ (http://img826.imageshack.us/) after converting them to .jpgs.
Can you retire your demon adventurer? You might end up somewhere else after coming back from retirement. Or you could try to travel through hell (if the hell regions connect) until you find a demonic fortress and maybe get out this way. But it's weird that there are no adamantine tubes. Anyway grats on finding a really weird glitch.

fakeedit: got beaten to it, gonna post anyway

Unfortunately, no fortresses on this map, made a fresh one to try out adventuring in 31.18 (I play 31.16 for fortresses, so that stonesense works). Also it won't let me travel underground, I doubt I'd have the patience to walk to a fortress anyway.

No option to retire either, I got bored and picked a fight with another demon. Apparently Demons of Pig Iron are much stronger than Horned Devils like me:

This has happened before, though I'm not sure if it was someone bodyswapping with demons specifically, just underground stuff.

Is there still that glitch where being directly under a site let you quick travel even while you were underground, or did Toady fix that? If he didn't, you can try that to escape.

nah it's not fixed just that being a demon might make you hostile to the civ thus most likely prevent you from leaving.
though seeing as your in the body swap state you could have just slept and the game would have randomly swap to a different body next time you wake up. due to how DF sleeping is just traveling in 1 spot.

Oh wow, it works. I slept once and woke up as an elephant on the surface. Again and woke up as a giant mole in a cavern underneath the ocean. This save has suddenly become far more interesting - I'll bet you didn't know cave crocodiles have high musicality.

Edit: Now experiencing life as a magma crab. It's a serene existence, swimming across the magma sea, idly seeking a volcano to gain access to the surface.

I'm attempting to reach a town as an Elephant. This is a slow process because any traveling or sleeping triggers a body swap. Bogeymen do show up to kill you even as an animal if you're alone at night, but you can safely wait out the night near a herd of friendlies.

About a day and a half's travel; had to rest (i.e. wait out the night, since you can't sleep) once and got there the second day with plenty of sunlight left. Surprisingly, the humans are friendly and can give me quests! "Hello elephant, a particular outlaw has been causing us much hardship.."

I knew it, THE ELEPHANTS WERE WORKING WITH THE HUMANS ALL ALONG! They hired them to kill us dwarves so they can come by when we're all dead and steal our stuff.

...

Anyway, what happens if you sleep in town? Can you switch bodies with one of the residents?

God, imagine how creepy this would be if you were the body-swapping adventurer.

You go out for a bit of camping, and when you wake up you are suddenly a completely horrifying creature in a giant underground cavern. Scared and alone, you go to sleep and wake up again as a crab, and finally an elephant. As an elephant, you search for a town or maybe a hospital, and when you get to one nobody really cares!

Traveled to a nearby fort to recruit some companions, and.. discovered that Elephants can't open doors. All my plans for becoming the first great Elephant general ruined. Which means I won't be able to sleep indoors in a town, either.

Anyway, moral of the story: don't sleep on glaciers. In fact, don't set foot on them at all, no matter how many bogeymen are chasing you.

Tried that, he just gave me the standard message about death finding me soon enough. I'd already gotten plenty of quests from the nearby hamlet anyway, it'd just be a pain to do them with no companions, bogeymen to contend with, and an unequipped/unskilled elephant's mediocre combat abilities.

For some reason, it seems to always go demon -> some critter on the surface (elephant, warthog, etc) -> underground critter -> underground critter -> repeat. Only the second body swap is actually interesting with the ability to visit towns and talk to people, once you get stuck underground there's not much to do.

That being said it is theoretically possible to quest as an elephant or warthog or whatever, I just didn't have the patience to continue, as traveling or sleeping kicks you into a random underground critter with nothing to do.

well sleeping in town/fort will lead to changing into one of the residents. so press your luck and wake inside the mayor of the town and go on a killing spree, just make sure to not die before you go back to sleep/travel.
The rules for body swapping seem to be is,
1. traveling and sleeping will lead to a character change.
2.The only time where traveling won't swap to a different character is if you go back to the same place the original adventurer is which finish the swapping and or going back to the place where your last person you swap to was(if you where urist the dwarf and swap to camena the elf to get back Urist you must revisit the place you pick up Camena due to Urist is now some where in that area, and traveling back might get urist back.)
3.Death is still PermaDeath.
4.Companions will leave you if you swap back to your character you had before.
5.if you swap to a different character and travel well expect your self to be warp to a different part of the map or the ocean.

Most of these rules (5ish,3ish,2ish,1) don't follow when you have Dfusion and change characters using the ?perma adv change? function under 'Adv_tools' rule 3 can be fixed by using 'tools' instead and exiting the program.

I think it might be because of your current vertical and horizontal coordinates. If you haven't tried traveling to some other region, try now: you have a good chance of changing into whatever they have there.

Maybe you can try to sleep under a labyrinth and become a minotaur or a night creature. I wonder what kind of stats they have.

Couldn't you exploit the game's lax treatment of creature size and just crouch down and go under somebody who is already standing in a doorway (thus blocking the door from closing and allowing passage)...

You can download the save if you just want to see it for yourself - as for replicating it at will, well, my best guess would be:
1.) get a ways out on a glacier
2.) exit travel mode
3.) sleep
4.) Continue walking - the first time it wasn't instant, I continued to walk a bit longer after waking up before getting abruptly swapped with no warning.

Or if you're patient and really want to duplicate the original conditions, exit travel on the shore and march out onto the glacier the slow way before sleeping. If that doesn't do it, then I have no idea. Since it seems to have something to do with travel/sleep and certainly never occurs on normal terrain, I imagine it had something to do with sleeping on the glacier, and maybe not being in travel mode at first (until sleeping, which is basically travel mode), but there may be more to it than that.

This is the most awesome glitch I've ever heard of. Kinda makes me want to write a story, y'know?

So.....has it been agreed as to how this happened? I honestly want to try duplicating it for fun and profit (but mostly that first one.) As far as I can tell glaciers are involved?

Oh hell this explains soooo much i found a Freindly recruitably demon on the surface somthing like the body swap must have happend to him

I just found this one guy named (Reko Mallumutk "Reko the Perplexing Martyr" Charcoal Devil) And i  found him inside this one human keep labeled as a prisoner  his equipment was decorated Nicely with facy items and his description is as follows (A great scaly Coyote twisted into a humanoid form it, Squirms and fidgets, Its charcoal scales are jagged and close-set, Beware its Fire !

He is skinny)

So this guy is some kinda forgotten beast that was captured or somthing? hopefully he will make a kick ass companion ! and turn all those goblins into !!Goblins!!

Log : When i was exploring with Reko we found some lions and he threw a fire ball at one lion killing it and then he ran into the flames and killed the rest !
Log II: After when getting almost to a fort i was heading too we where ambushed by a team of humans and I noticed Reko can also  Breath fire aswell as throw it also he is an awesome fighter
Log III: Later after 3 Ambushes i fell pray to a mace goblin because Reko got distracted by a swarm of buzzards and chased them away with fire balls while my skull was bashed in , maybe i  will find him again?

Those demons aren't glitches, they escape the underworld during worldgen and take over human and goblin civilisations. The demon prisoner probably came from a goblin civilisation that was conquered by the humans.

Dfusion pretty much makes this glitch easy to replicate and gives you more control on who you swap to.
the thing that causes this must be the game losing track of who's in slot 0 which should be the adventurer slot.
Sleeping in a glacier must have cause the game to miss count which slot you where and fill that in with the random character. this won't effect the legends which still follow your now NPC adventure and force the game to find another character to fill in that slot each time you travel seeing how to unload the map and reload it.

Kinda reminds me of the time I teleported  to the bottom of a Kobold cave and had to fight my way out.  8)
There was less body swapping tho  :(

While doing something similar, I once got swapped into an olm. This bug probably is glacier-related.

"In the lands of the south, your dreams can be made true... In the frost lands of the south, the aurora borealis fills the sky with magical energy. I once journeyed there, to reflect on the beauty of nature. After many long nights of fishing, I just laid and let the dreams come as they may while enjoying the smoke of an aged glumprong branch. I dreamt that I was a giant, hundreds of times more voluminous than any mortal... but I am rambling again. The oceans of ice contain much magical wisdom, waiting for you to come and partake."

Awesome bug, I keep dropping in the ocean, resting (!) and spawning as a cavern beast.  First I was a crundle.  Then a human mechanic.  I died, giving someone a chance at heroism and starting a little epic in the process. I was a voracious cave crawler.  The cavern was full of crundles, crocodiles and stranglers, I killed all of them.  Then I noted a battle between a strangler and an antmen tribe.  The strangler got one, but they got the strangler. I killed what I thought was all of them.  Mostly grabbing limbs and tearing--voracious crawlers are enormous, as I realize.  Then the queen ant appeared.  She shot me full of darts before I even got there.  I bit off her hand. She fired a dart into my head, pierced the brain, killed me.  I guess it helps having 4 hands. Now the ant queen can heroically rebuild her tribe with a legend to tell the hatchlings.

Use tweak and punch a hole through the ground all the way to the surface. After recruiting a demonic legion of course.

Then siege the elves.

Good idea.

Toadys somehow accidentally incorporated reincarnation and the afterlife into the game, only in dwarf fortress could something so amazing happen.

I just discovered this topic. This is the greatest bug ever.
I've never actually gotten to see Hell in DF before. I didn't know it was so much like the caverns you can find scatted everywhere.
Now I'm an elephant.
Now I'm on the ocean.
Now the game is frozen.
Now DF is the most needlessly detailed game I've ever played.

wait didn't I hear that before?
If you do stuff while in, say, the law-giver's body, does it show up in their Legends entry?

Also, this means that apparently Toady has the basic framework down for taking control of already-existing folks in the world. Awesome.
oh well maybe I should up date that body swap thread (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=64524.0) on the glacier method

It seems a lot more open than any cave my adventure's have been in.

Adamantine won't help you. You're going to have to find a Magma Pool.

Alright, DOING IT! RISE! RIIIIISE!
Does that still work in 0.34.11, by any chance?

Simply because that seems like a pseudo-feature bug and...
*prays that this hasn't been fixed*

this is bodyswap glitch and there has been work through the years (2011) that already made it possible to control any npc or formal adventurer now in dfhack.

I know, but the "glitchy way" seems much cooler to me.
DFHack is good, but kinda overrated, for me at least.

well the original script was made in Dfusion and fine tune it so that you can stay in the body if you want to... also kinda fix the whole can't retire. I also found(error corrected) the way to properly jump into different bodies through cage trapping yourself releasing the caged flag and walking away from your body, doing so unloads your character and quickly jumps you into a body nearby.

Not to bash on your English-speaking skills, since I'm not great at it, either, but not founded.
You can found a city or a company.

You probably meant "I found". (or "I find" if it's Present Simple).
Don't ask me to explain that further, I'm not an English teacher by any stretch. (not a Polish teacher, either, but that aside...)
