Title: So much nicer here.
Post by: Cespinarve on September 29, 2010, 01:26:19 am
Recently gotten into Minecraft, right around the time that DF had that "won't run on Macs" little problem, and frustrated with my latest fort, I decided that my semi-annual break from DF would be good. Only so much Dwarven stupidity I can take*. ANyways, I feel the need to say how much... better the Bay 12 forums are. The response time is better, the people are helpful. You're all much smarter, and more attractive. When people think about what kind of forums The Old Spice Man would frequent, they know it's not he Minecraft forums, or Neopets. It's Bay 12, with the lovely gray-and-black colour schemes, and in jokes about Kitten murder and beating elves to death with their own children.

I... I love you all so much within reason! When paypal finally pulls it's head out of my ass and let's me buy Minecraft I'm donating twice as much to Tarn Adams as I'll pay to Notch.

*JUST PUT IT IN THE FUCKING STOCKPILE, FOR THE LOVE OF ARMOK JUST FOLLOW MY DAMN ORDERS ARHGRGHRGHRGHR

This is a remarkably civil and well behaved forum.  I suspect it's partly due to the fact that you need to have quite a lot of patience to get into DF, so most of the more troublesome individuals get weeded out of the community itself.  Even so, I am often pleasantly surprised by these forums.

For a forum as old as this one is you have to admit there is still shockingly few.

Just how would one troll a forum capable of discussing at length the most efficient method of trapping mermen to extract, process and sell their bones? We don't exactly have much of a tendency for outrage here. I guess you'd have to preach Jack Chick or something?

As somebody who has spent quite some time on the-site-that-shall-not-be-named, the bay12 forums are a really nice change of pace. I love the community behind DF so much its astounding. I rarely see people get mad at each other in these threads, and even when they do, they seem to retain their maturity and don't turn into babbling idiots.

I never thought that could happen on an internet message board, so I must say, I'm quite shocked.

Before I got into DF, I was into this Harry Potter online rp thing, and their forum was appalling. Everyone bitched to everyone, and people who gave their opinions were considered trolls. It was like high school combined with the ugliest people one can ever see. I swear, i must be the best looking (read: average) Harry Potter fan, if I'm to take that forum as a pop. sample.

Then I get here and get called a deity for my wordsmithing. Hell, I've never felt more welcome on a forum.

Plus, someone chewed me out for making an MST3K reference that they didn't get, asking me the relevance on talking about Tom Servos on a thread about Crows.

Honestly.

It helps that the average age here is probably well into the 20s; when you look at the Minecraft forums, however...

What's the average age on the Minecraft forums? 12?
Title: Re: So much nicer here.

At the very least, I think we're looking at single digits here.

Plus, those of us who frequent the forum and are below the average age are mostly fine :)

Sig'd.
Though it does require a highly specialised definition of the word 'nice'...

Honestly, I've never seen a flamewar on this forum, ever.  I've seen nice polite discussion about why Urist McForumer's deathtrap of magma won't work and a slightly patronizing suggestion as to how to make it better, followed by Urist McForumer agreeing readily to try it.

I think it's because with a game like this help better be appreciated or else you're screwed.

There might have been a couple on the lower forums.
And I heard a goblin camp thread got deleted because of flames flying high.

Every time Scott puts a new comic on VGCats, you can bet that a good three quarters are going to bash it, on its own forums.
Here every update by Toady is followed by cries of "Praise the Toady One!"

Nobody criticizes the newbies about their posts, and everyone is civil about almost everything.
Truly, this is the forum holy land.  8)

Ok there are some themes that are exceptions (Gay dwarves, furrys etc.) but everything else seems pretty tame and i like that.

Once every month or two I see either a series of posts that gets deleted by Toady, or a Toady post complaining about a series of deletions he had to make that I missed. So flame wars do happen, but they're not common. Mostly on the Suggestions forum or in the FotF thread.

No, YOUR MOM is.. oh wait I did that one already.

It's a matter of perspective. As a veteran of forums ranging from "standard teenage gamer fights" to "hard flamewar central" (we're talking about six-paragraph essays on how much of a prat the other guy is, involving detailed descriptions of nonconsensual sodomy with foreign objects, the Hindu caste system, and the difference between 'idiot', 'imbecile', and 'moron') to places where the participants really would kill each other IRL given the chance, this place is fairly civilized and I find myself needing to stuff war-mode back into its box from time to time.

The fact that Toady bans for fights and not much else helps a lot.

It's not all praise; people do bitch, and I'm one of them, but most real complaints are of the long-standing bugs (soap, clothes, contaminants, where the hell's the dungeon master...) so we don't get the kind of "it's badly flawed" "no it's perfect" you see on, say, Xbox forums.

Also the dwarf-related boards seem to be nicer than the general-discussion boards. Hard to have arguments in between goblin grinders and noble magma pits.

And thus we discuss the merits of dealing with them

The only thread that I've seen here that could be classified as a flamewar derailed into people posting ascii-art of cheese after a few pages.

The culture of rampant absurd silliness that this forum seemingly has developed probably mostly stops those kinds of things from occurring.

This is an exceptionally nice and intelligent forum. And by that, I'm referring to regulars and long-time members. Newbies come along, and they either start nice, get nice to fit in or get forced out by well-thought-out ownage by the older members.
Let's face it, flaming happens, but only to those that deserve it. By which I mean the stupid and the trollish. You would never be flamed for being furry or for needing help or something else incidental and meaningless on this forum, but if your a dickhead, you're getting a verbal beatdown. When you realize your jokes about the experienced poster's mothers are having no effect, you will eventually bugger off.
At least that's how it goes in my experience.

I think there was a thread like this before... If I remember the reasoning was that the learning curve in DF is so steep that trolls can't play the game long enough to find something to complain about.

Amazing though, the most flame I can remember is the poop-in-DF argument and the channeling creates ramps argument... and those weren't that bad.

Yea, the forum is great here. Best i've ever seen. I HAVE seen the flames of the over troll a few times down in the other games section but thats mostly due to "outsider" people coming in without having to get over the DF learning curve, heh.

I think the entry bar is set pretty high around these parts which naturally discourages the undesirables.
Look at the amount of time & effort learning to play Fortress mode takes, most average internet people don't have the attention span or level of commitment to invest in that to then turn up on the forums & act like they would elsewhere.
If anything that investment gives people a sense of camaraderie with the others here especially when there's no "I win" scenario in this game & it requires a hell of a lot of lateral thinking to get beyond the merely surviving level of a fortress.

The only trolling that really exists with regards to this game is "OMG TEH INTERFACE SUCKS WHY WOULD I PLAY SOMETHING THAT BAD" or certain elitist types who go "lulz you use tilesets n00b pure ASCII is the only way to play DF" which in my experience tends to mainly be on other sites where DF is discussed (both arguements can GTFO TBH).

I agree stuff like the Mermaid farming thread, which was pure awesome, kill most trolling attempts before they're even conceived. If stuff like that is normal & discussed in a rational manner, even held in high regard for the hubris it's hard to think of things which could rile people.

I spent a lot of time thinking about this the other night, and I believe I found a very believable reason why this forum is so nice, aside from the learning curve turning most troll-type posters away.

Anybody who plays this game past the initial learning stage and actually gets to the point where they "understand" the game has come to terms with the fact that you cannot win DF. With that being said, there's no competition. Without being able to win, and with a game thats so diverse, there's no reason to compete. There is no right way to do anything in this game.

An example of this would as simple as something as embarking strategies. There's no need to fight over petty things such as which embark skills/goods are the best, because in the hands of a skilled player, you can embark without any skills and just a log of wood and build a decent fort just fine.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that instead of arguing over whats "best" so that we can "win" better than anyone else, we all help each other see new and creative idea's that allow us to play the game in a different way. I've not seen one person on these forums claim to be a better DF player than anyone else, I've just seen them say they have more experience, or that they've come across said problem before and then listed how they overcame it.

I personally believe that the "Losing is fun" mentality that all DF players have is ultimately what sets this community apart from all others.

I dunno, maybe this is due to the "Sanity is not a requirement to play this game" thing.

It's the learning curve.  It's like a rite of passage; we've all had to drag ourselves through a series of hilariously failed forts in order to become megaproject building, elf sacrificing, kitten eating DF players.  Not only does it weed out the weak, as mentioned, it also gives us a shared experience of initiation we can bond over.  We aren't embarrassed to talk about our painful early failures because we all had them... and they're generally hilarious.  This has some unfortunate side effects; we can be self-congratulatory pricks at times.  This thread is one such example -- not that it's stopping me from posting in it.  Thankfully, we generally keep it among ourselves and don't go looking for fights in other forums, so it's a minor problem we could afford to be more conscious of, but don't have to start a crusade over.

Of note is the fact that, while we occasionally tend towards hero worship of Toady, when we do have a bone to pick with him, it's generally constructive criticism -- at worst, it's very whiny criticism, but it never reaches open hostility (http://mwunsch.tumblr.com/post/1179254565/notchdrones).

While DF is amazingly subject to total abuse, any time someone even HINTS at insulting Toady sparks fly crazy much. You got a complaint that the new version isn't coming out fast enough? be prepared for 2 pages of hatred to appear on your screen. In retrospect, It's not so much as fanboyism to the game as it is fanboyism to Toady, I guess.

I feel your pain.

Another thing I somewhat can't get myself to like here in B12 is that there's so many obsessively complex and/or massive megaprojects around that the small things are often kind of ignored. Also, in a similar vein, there's just so many players talking about what they do in their games, there's just not enough attention going around to react to all posts as they would perhaps deserve.

This is one of 2 forums I frequent (aside from occasional jaunts to 4chan - my misanthropy needs to go somewhere, right?), the other being xkcd. A few of the more debate-oriented subforums get flamewars and the like, but the others are great. some great people there (and lots of highly competent mods).

As an aside, I'm curious. How many of you frequent the higher and lower forums?

In the 0.31.14 release thread I made the mistake of suggesting that it might help us test the new features if some of the insanely long list of bugs in the tracker were fixed. Apologists & fanboys poured out of the walls.
Don't take this the wrong way, but you've managed to insert a comment on your feelings about this issue into how many threads lately? That's probably not helping your case.

All the nastiness happens on the lower forums, but it's still way less than most forums, which is nice.

Ironically, everyone who frequents the lower forums are basically interwoven and there's like several massive groups of friends, who all know everyone else in the Finally section and almost never come up here. It's the amount of people up here that's doing most of the work keeping the flames down, combined with a good community and two fair and respected moderators.

You're on a forum full of ingenius, evil overlords that chat about new ways to murder harmless kittens who also secretly control groups of deranged, drunken midgets. How could you not love that?

That's what makes this forum so nice and peaceful; we can all relate to this single, steep learning curved, mind numbing roguelike game.

...I come up here pretty often.

The only threads I've seen that have what could be described as a flame war would be the Atheist discussion (Well, of course.) and when Lillipad posts something someone doesn't like in Forum Games.

I don't remember ever, ever seeing a stupid or agressive poster there. This is somewhat disturbing, as I'm accostumated to the Dofus and Wow forums (where flaming and stupidity run rampant).

Well, you may also seldom find the boring poster, but that's also astonishingly rare.

People are helpful, and respond quickly. It's even better than the XKCD fora.

All in all, this is really freaking me out. You abnormal mutants.

Derails are part of a forums life cycle.

The ability of our forum to start on any topic then randomly derail into another topic and continue randomly derailing for eternity is what makes DF immortal.

I would definitely agree with a lot of things that have been said before in this thread. A good amount of other forums I joined I barely posted, if at all due to the lack of maturity. I'm sure there are similar forums out there in quality, but I have yet to find a better forum than the bay 12 forums.

Also, on the topic of derails, they can be annoying from time to time but generally they make me laugh when the thread comes to some ridiculously unrelated topic, and then stays on that topic for a while. I think the derails are part of the charm of B12 forums, but that may just be me  :)

To be entirely honest, this place couldn't be better.  The game is legendary, even in an incomplete state.  The community is great here.  (And the ability for a thread to start about X and derail to Y and then derail again to Z, then derail back to X and go to W and V and then randomly to C skipping everything in between...  well, you get the idea.)

the thing is, every forum does that. But the users (and mods) here take it in stride. They're less topic-differentiated threads than more natural threads of conversation that can flow.

On the other hand, most other forums don't feature incessant back-patting about how smart and superior they are.

Masturbation is normal, doing it in groups seems like a natural progression.

The *worse* thing that DF forums have gotten into (off the top of my head) has been either the sexy-mod/comic for dwarf fortress (which I didn't mind) and the classic ascII versus 'graphics'.  (which we *all* known that ____ is much better then the other one) When I was looking into minecraft for the first time, I almost wrote off the game just due to their horrid forums.  Last night I saw a posting on a 'mod' some one did, where it was obviously a kid's first attempt at changing the icons in the game and he was proud of it, and everyone was flaming him for doing such a poor job.  wtf is wrong with those people.

I think a lot of the credit for our forums consistent level of quality is that Toady cares about how the forums are run and that he takes action when it is needed.  Now i have only been here for, what, 3 years (?) but I would  imagine that when the forums were smaller, Toady established the culture of the forums, which have carried on to today.  This can be seen in the self patrolling that occurs sometimes, but also just in how people act on the forums.

So... go DF Forums! (?)

There is only really one topic that the Minecraft forums aren't horrid in: discussing designing computers/digital logic with Redstone. The threads are either filled with people praising everyone who happens to know something about digital design as gods, or people trading information on how to do things with the Redstone, which is a nice change from every single other post on that forum. I've gotta say that Redstone is possibly the only thing that Minecraft has over DF, and thanks to the lack of blocks that Redstone can actually interact with, it's a lot less useful than computerized mechanisms can be here.

You know, I don't think people here really have that long Memories. There has been some trolling, and outside of the "lower forums" too.
Nothing too unreasonable, but it was there.
There's also been moans about how new people ruining the community a year or so ago, so everyone with join dates in 2009, you ruined the community!

Hostility of forums is always a matter of perspective and numbers of new people who are treated with respect versus how many are trolled right away.
"OMG POAR MAGMA ON IT!!!" is a good way to encourage the growth of negativity, since it isn't helpful to new people. Then again, people who post replies to that of "You are stupid", no matter how polite, gives the OP a justification for hostility.

You make the community the place it is. Every single individual who takes part in it. If you like your current community, pat yourself on the back. If not, look in the mirror and GTFO.

Is it so much nicer here? Depends on your perspective. To some people, no.
