Other Games / Rogue Trader 40k RPG from Owlcat Games. Coming out late 2023
« on: December 08, 2022, 10:38:35 pm »

Owlcat Games announced that they were working on a 40k Rogue Trader cRPG about 6 months ago, but they just released an alpha for it this week, and that gives us a bit more information of what this RPG looks like.

If you're not familiar with Owlcat Games, they're the developers behind the Pathfinder video games, Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous. I enjoyed Kingmaker but never could get around to finishing it, but Wrath of the Righteous thoroughly hooked me and I had an absolute blast playing it. Its not a perfect game by any means, but its definitely one of my favorite RPGs, and the setting of that game makes me incredibly interested in seeing these folks tackle a 40k game.

Rogue Trader seems to be like their Pathfinder games in that its an isometric cRPG where you play a customizable protagonist Rogue Trader with a party of NPC companions, including a Sister of Battle, an Eldar, and a Tech-Priest. And like the Pathfinder games it seems to be an adaptation of a tabletop rpg, in this case though its the Rogue Trader RPG. The game is set in the Koronus Expanse, a lot of the companions match up with the different tabletop classes (Seneschal, Navigator, etc.), and the stats and skills seem to be the same as in the tabletop. Character levelling seems a bit different, but its possible they've just organized it a bit more than the tabletop did.

Unlike the Pathfinder games, it seems that they're going exclusively with turn-based combat, and there seems to be a half-cover/full cover system similar to XCOM and other recent turn based games. My personal expectations for a Rogue Trader game would be a mix of trading, exploring, and fighting both on the ground and in space, and it looks like they're trying to go for all of that. There's space combat in the alpha (albeit in a very unfinished state), the world map makes it look like there's a lot to explore, and managing trade and stats like Profit Factor sounds like a core component of the game.

If you absolutely want to play the game this second, preordering gives you alpha access, but personally I'm going to be waiting until release date since that seems like a good way to burn out on the game.

Mafia / King of the Mafia 7: Round 2 (6/7 players)
« on: March 10, 2020, 12:00:52 pm »
An unmoving skeleton lies on a large throne, as distant angry whispers echo through the hall. "The King should only in office for a year, but this is his third year of reign!"
"There's precedent, Toaster ruled for two years as King before. What you're suggesting is regicide."
"Toaster was much more competent than this guy, he just hid as the other two killed each other. We have to get him to resign."
"Quiet now, the walls have ears and the throne room is just ahead."
A door closes, and silence once again falls upon the halls. The skeleton stands up and stretches, laughing to himself. He had been killed a long time ago, but only now did they dare bother him enough to discover it. It was finally time to find the next King of the Mafia.

Previous game list:
King of the Mafia (second thread)
King of the Mafia Continued
King of the Mafia 3
King of the Mafia 4
King of the Mafia 5
King of the Mafia 6

Rules
Shamelessly copied and pasted from previous games. Please note the AntiLurk system especially, and hammers are active in this game.
Welcome to King of the Mafia, your chance to win the fabulous crown of this subforum!  The rules are below.  They were originally written by Dakarian and have been edited by webadict and me (my edits are in italics).
You think you've proven yourself, child?  "Oh my, I won as town!"  Meh, that's easy with a whole army at your back and power roles you can abuse.   "But I've beaten the town as Mafia!"  PHAH!  With friends and a horribly weak town.

But can you do both?  Can you take down the mafia with 6 others, then turn around as mafia and BEAT those 6 to a pulp?  Can you pick just the perfect role-braving additions caused by an evil mod-that will not only help you as town but also as scum?  Can you fight off endless waves of people, including those you've killed?

Well then step on the hill and see if you have what it takes to be King of the Mafia.

Spoiler: Basic Rules:  READ! (click to show/hide)

Specialized Rules:

Inning is not required to sign up.  To sign up read only the first two pages of Xylbot's role list and choose ONE role from there (and PM it to me).  You will then be assigned with that role, with a possibility of additional features based on balance or tomfoolery(though nothing hidden).

Once 7 people have signed up, the game begins.  A random person will be picked as KING MAFIA and will be given, on top of their role, the Mafiakill.  The First Round ONLY will start with a kill-less Night (that is all killing abilities will be disabled).

From there, the game continues.  During the game, anyone else can Sign up to be put on a queue. Game will play like a standard mafia game.  If you die at any time, you may Sign up again, though others who haven't played that round will have priority.

If King Mafia is killed at any time, the round ends.  Those in queue will take the place of those that died to refill the ranks back to 7 (those still alive remain), a new KING MAFIA will be picked, and the game will start on the next phase (Old round ends in Day, new round starts at Night...)

Play continues until KING MAFIA succeeds in being the ONLY one alive.  Note that all players being dead does not fulfill the KING MAFIA win condition - in that case a new round would begin with 7 new players.

There is an antilurk system in place.  Each RL day, you MUST have either voted (even if its for the same person) or sent in an action.  Fail once and you get one prod.  Fail twice in the same round and you will be killed, a player in Queue will automatically Sub in for you, and you will not be able to rejoin.  Ever.

All may join this game, though be aware of the antilurk system.  Please read this line Dariush.

*Toony Edit on No-Lynch policy*
Players may choose to no-lynch two days in a row. Otherwise a lynch must be made. If players force a tie then the lynch target will be randomly decided between the lynch candidates. If there are only two players left the compulsory lynch rule is not enforced, instead a stalemate results in a mafia loss.

You're done with the rules.  Now join and claim the mountain!

Players for Round 1:
-IcyTea
-NQT Ascetic (Survivor)
-IonMatrix Modkilled Bodyguard (Town)
-Hector13

Roll To Dodge / Another Gunfight in the Saloon (Turn 7)
« on: July 14, 2017, 08:21:46 pm »
The newest arrivals at the Drunken Prospector Saloon simply wanted to drink their problems away. Their gang leader had led them to rob the Transcontinental Express, but the job had left him dead and no money to show for it. The 6 survivors had just gotten their drinks and sat down when the saloon's doors swung open and the local sheriff walked in, gun drawn. He'd been tipped off that two of the survivors were willing to turn in their gang in exchange for a pardon. And so began another Gunfight in the Saloon...

Gunfight in the Saloon is a RTD that combines ideas from the card game Bang! and an old RTD called Six-Shooter. Each player starts the game with a hidden alignment, with the exception of the sheriff, and a six-round pistol. Each alignment has a secret condition that must be met in order for that player to win.
Spoiler: Alignments (click to show/hide)

Alignments will be determined randomly at the start of the game. A D6 will be used to determine the success or failure of your actions.

To join, simply submit your character's name and some sort of characteristic/quirk they have. This will determine some sort of modifier you will get at the start of the game.

Playerlist (I'll take 7 to start):
Glass (Jack Spades)
OceanSoul (Shouts-with-Bow)
Madman198237 (Samuel Crank)
PaPaj (Garry Maxwell)
Johiah (as himself)
Eschar (Slab the Killer)
FallacyofUrist (Fallacy)

Other Games / King of Dragon Pass- Now on Steam
« on: August 04, 2015, 09:34:50 pm »
There didn't seem to be a thread on King of Dragon Pass but its one brought up a lot by people in this forum, and I didn't know where to ask this question anyway.

Since King of Dragon Pass was released on Steam this week, I was wondering whether or not to pick it up from there (I've been wanting to grab this game for a while). From what I've read about it, this version has a lot of new events added but a few minor performance issues. Does anyone know whether its worth the 12 bucks for the new content or is getting the normal version from GOG or somewhere else better?

Thanks!

Create a meta RTD on bay12
(4) You create an RTD where players roll to create a forum game. You think smugly about how clever you are, before wondering if people will respond.

I'm sure someone has done something like this before, but this is a minimalist RTD where you, as yourself, attempt to create and maintain a forum game with the standard d6 helping or harming your progress. Will it be an ISG, an RTD, or a mafia game? Will it be a deathmatch, or a minimalist game that dies after 10 pages, or one of those monstrosities like Warrens of Oric the Awesome or Einsteinian Roulette? Will it be remembered as fondly as Looter's Delight, and when it fails will you or someone else attempt to reboot it like Perplexicon? You and the d6 will decide!

Simply post what kind of game you want to create to start.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Return!

It's 1863 and the Civil War continues to rage. In the Wild West, the unlikely duo of Blondie, the Good, and Tuco, the Ugly, continue to hunt for a chest of gold buried in a cemetery, with Angel Eyes, the Bad, continuing to pursue them in his own search for the treasure. Their search brings them to another Union military camp, where once again a team of Confederate spies are sabotaging the encampment.

This game is a normal Mafia game with the exception of three players are third party players with no interest in the main portion of the game. Please pay attention to the King Mafia style voting rule in place.

This game can have between 12 and 15 players. With 12 the set up is 7 Union soldiers, 2 Confederate Saboteurs, and 3 being the GBU. 15 player set up is 9 Union, 3 Confederate, and the 3 GBU.

Union Players are Town and win when all Confederates are dead. The lynch vote is the town's main weapon. The town will get two players who have secondary abilities. These two players will have a random chance of being one of several roles, a General (is able to reveal as an night action and receives an extra vote, but can't be protected after he reveals), a Captain (able to inspect players), an Angry Private (has a one-shot vigkill) and a Guardsman (a Jailkeeper, roleblocks and protects his target).

Confederate Players are Mafia/Scum and win when all the Union players are dead. The Confederates have access to a quicktopic and have a Night Kill. The Confederates also have one player with an extra ability, either a Captain (inspects players) or a Saboteur (roleblocker).

The Third Parties:
The Good: This player wins by keeping the Ugly alive until D4 and surviving to the end of the game. The Good knows who the Ugly is and has a one-shot Nightkill. The Good appears Confederate to inspects
The Bad: The Bad wins by keeping himself alive until the game ends or the Good and the Ugly are dead. The Bad has a Nightkill. The Bad appears Union to inspects.
The Ugly: The Ugly wins by keeping the Good alive until D4 and surviving until the game ends. The Ugly knows the identity of the Good. On the first Confederate attempt to kill the Ugly, the kill will backfire and result in the death of the one performing the kill. The Ugly also will survive the first time he is lynched, but his identity will be revealed. The Ugly comes up as Confederate to inspects.

The Bad will leave the game upon winning. If the Good or the Ugly lose (due to the other one dying) they will leave the game. Due to the nature of the Good and the Bad's win condition the game must continue until the start of D4 for the Good and the Bad to win.

Roll To Dodge / Roll to Operations Control
« on: December 09, 2014, 07:14:03 pm »
Hello, and welcome CTU veteran. As an award for your long and distinguished service you have been promoted. No longer will you risk life and limb battling terrorists, insurgents, and other enemies of the United Nations, Moons, and Planets. Instead you will use your years of experience to guide field operatives through various missions from the comfort of our state-of-the-art operations room. You will brief a 5-man Tactical Squad on their mission's targets and parameters, coordinate their efforts, and relay to them additional information and support as required. Your new job may no longer be deadly, but you will be overseeing men who still face danger. I hope we do not need to remind you that if you lose men through any fault of your own, you could be tried for as high a crime as treason. Should you excel in the operations room as well as you did on the field of battle, further promotion may be in store.

Roll To Dodge / Refugees of Morgana: A Sci-fi RTD
« on: September 13, 2014, 04:02:16 pm »
Refugees of Morgana

The Cenric Empire was once great and powerful according to the historians. Even as close to a hundred and fifty years ago, the Cenric Empire controlled most of the Alefian human planets, and could destroy Svingar’s battle fleets with ease. But now the empire is crumbling, with civil war, corruption, and renewed assaults by the alien Shar’Drei as the cause. Eight months ago, Emperor Winton the Brave, agreed by most in the empire to the best ruler in recent history, was assassinated. Winton'’s heir now sits on the throne, but civil war has returned to the empire.
Until now, Morgana was a peaceful prosperous planet, affected only by occasional pirates or Shar’Drei raiding parties. But after Winton’s death, an ambitious general named Mordred had his troops declare him emperor, and Morgana became his main stronghold to fight against the rest of the emperor. As a result, a large imperial army has attacked Morgana, and much of planet will likely be destroyed in the struggle.
For one reason or another, you are currently in Doferum starport. Are you a citizen or a deserting soldier, or someone important trying to flee the planet? Or are you a soldier in Mordred’s army waiting to board a transport to a battle zone? Or are you something else entirely?

Have you ever wanted to be an evil henchmen? You know, the kind with awful marksmanship and armor who get slaughtered by the heroes in droves along their quest to overthrow your overlord. Well, here is your chance. Sign up today! Because, if you don't join up, the evil overload will mind control you into joining anyway.

This is an inverse Adventure RTD. Instead of being the heroes, your job is to stop them. You will likely fail at this. Because this focuses on the heroes, situational rolls that are normally bad (1s and 2s) are good for you (ex. The overlord decides to send out (1) half his army to slaughter the beleaguered and outnumbered heroes). However, combat works normally (ex. Hero attacks Mook 1 [6 vs. 3] and slices Mook 1's head off). I'll start with 5 players

Mafia / Beginner's Mafia Sprint: College of Cardinals (D2)
« on: May 03, 2014, 08:35:57 pm »
Beginner's Mafia: Sprint
College of Cardinals

This morning you found Pope Mafius I dead in his chambers. His death was anything but natural, as his body was hacked into pieces and demonic symbols were written in blood on the walls. All evidence points towards a conspiracy by two demon possessed cardinals. The 7 of you came up with a solution. You have locked yourselves inside a room each day, and after a day of prayer and discussion, you let the Holy Spirit pick a cardinal to be exorcised through casting votes.

Tired of the plodding pace of normal games? Just not interested in spending more than a month reading and arguing? Never manage to finish a game? Then the Sprint edition of Beginner's Mafia is right for you! Specifically designed to be great for newcomers and dabblers in Mafia, the game eschews many of the traditional rules of BMs to create a setup that is more fast-paced, fun and interesting. This game will never last more than a week! That means no waiting around, boredom or long-term commitment!

This setup puts its greatest emphasis on getting you to enjoy playing Mafia and to spark your interest in it. It still has an instructional aspect, however, and as such an IC (or two) will be present in the game to play the game with you. Their primary purpose is to teach you to play Mafia, and will do everything to further that goal even after death - but keep in mind that the playing IC(s) will still play for keeps.

Mafia Gameplay

The game of mafia has a simple concept. A large group of players known as the town plays against a smaller group of players known as the mafia. In this setup, there are seven players, with five town and two mafia.

Before the game begins, each players is given a role and an alignment by the moderator. There are two alignments in this setup: Town and Mafia. The town outnumber the mafia, but each individual member of the town does not know the alignment of any of the other members. The mafia know the alignment of everyone on their team and they can discuss the game privately in a special mafia chat. The mafia has access to a nightkill that they may use in the Night phase, while the town occasionally has roles with abilities that are used during the night.

Once everyone has a role, the game begins in the Day phase. During the Day phase, players may discuss the game and each player has a vote that they cast publicly to lynch a player. At the end of the day after some predetermined amount of time, the player with the most votes is lynched. Lynching does two things: it reveals a player's role and alignment, and it removes a player from the game. Once lynched, a player is no longer allowed to post in the thread.

Sprint Gameplay

Sprint specifically plays much like normal mafia, but with two notable exceptions. The game is effectively Nightless: Each Day, players may collectively decide to lynch a player, but instead of advancing to a silent Night the game begins with the next Day immediately. Thus, the playerbase must talk constantly, and there is no set time to send in actions - anyone with a power role and thus a night action must send in the action during the Day. It will then occur after the lynch, before the next Day starts (like a normal game). Because of this, the game will start with a single 24 hour Night to let everyone read their PMs and the Mafia to coordinate.

Each game is run with six beginner players and one IC, and the game will always consist of the following roles:
  • 2 Demons (Mafia Goons) - May decide each day to covertly kill someone after the lynch, before the next Day. Must survive.
  • 3 Townies - No powers, must lynch Mafia.
  • 1 Ward Placer (Doctor) - Can choose someone each day to protect from the Mafia kill. Must lynch Mafia.
  • 1 Experienced Exorcist (Macho Cop) - Can choose someone each day to discover the alignment of. Cannot be protected by the Doctor. Must lynch Mafia.

Rules
  • Voting - Votes are cast in red and should include the name of the targeted player. Other colors may be ignored.
    • Persus
    • Vote Persus13
    • You pesky demon, Persus! Burn in hell where you belong
    • Vote Perseus13
Are all acceptable ways to cast a vote if the target is clear enough.
    • If you want to simply remove your vote, you may put unvote in red text. You must explicitly state this.  It is possible to put the name of the player you were voting afterwards, but it is not recommended as it can lead to confusion.
  • Death - When you are dead, you are prohibited from posting in the thread. You may make a single 'bah' post after you die, however, it must not contain any game-related information.
  • Winning - Mafia win when all town players are dead. Town win when all mafia players are dead. As such, the game will auto-end if the mafia population ever equals or exceeds the town population.
  • PMs - Never PM another player. You may freely PM the moderator to ask game-related questions.
    • Never quote anything the mod says to you.
  • Edits - Never edit your posts for any reason. You will be modkilled if you do.
  • Replacements/Activity - If you find yourself unable to play, you should request a replacement. We may try to talk you out of it if it's for any other reason besides you not having enough time to play. Since the game only lasts a week, though, please try to stick to it. It's only a week.
    • Prods may be requested for a player. If they have not posted in the thread within 24 hours, excluding weekends, they will be prodded.
    • I will modkill you if you don't post for an entire Day (48 hours).
    • Please be active. The greatest killer of beginner games is poor activity.
  • Day Length - Days will last 48 hours, including weekends.
  • Extensions/Shortens - There is only one available Extension for the entire game; once you use it, it's gone. It is for 24 hours and may be used at any time if 33% of players (min 2) agree. Days can be shortened to end immediately with 51% of votes (min 3).
    • Votes for extension/shorten are done in boldface. Extend, Extension, Extend it up yo, Shorten it out y'all are acceptable ways to vote for an extension/shorten
    • Extensions/shortens can be opposed by declaring opposition (Oppose Shorten/Extend, I oppose this notion!, My Oppose goes to this), and they count against the total number of votes for an extension/shorten. Extensions count as opposition to shortens and vice versa.
  • External Participation - While the game is ongoing, if you are not a player, an IC, or a mod, refrain from posting in the thread.
    • Play to win! There is no hopeless situation, so don't ever give up. And remember, be bold! You learn nothing and you gain nothing by holding back.
  • Miscellaneous -  Use of cryptographic hashing is not permitted.  If you want to have hidden/obfuscated messages in your posts for later use, come up with them using your own wetware.

Roll To Dodge / Roll to Convert: Reboot edition
« on: February 13, 2014, 11:28:11 pm »
Hello, all, I'm resurrecting ROLL TO CONVERT, with the only improvement being a player limit.

A minimalist god conversion game with an 8 player limit

You are a monotheistic god who currently has one prophet in an ancient land. You can speak to your prophet in visions, and when he requests signs, you can do them, if you have enough converts. Think of it as Prophets of a New God where you are a god instead of a prophet.

To play, just fill this out.
Name of god:
First action for prophet:

Each of you starts out with a single prophet in a village.

Mafia / The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (Game Over!)
« on: February 11, 2014, 10:34:50 am »
The year is 1863, and the location is the wild West of the United States. A Confederate army is trying to take control of the West from the Union, and have infiltrated several men into a Union camp to sabotage it. Along with them are three men who don't care about the war, but are merely trying to make it through alive so they can get to a secret stash of gold.

Hello, and welcome to my first attempt at running a Mafia game.

This game is a normal Mafia game with the exception of three players are third party players with no interest in the main portion of the game.

This game has 13 players, of which 7 are Union soldiers, 3 are Confederate Saboteurs, and 3 are third parties.

Union Players are Town and win when all Confederates are dead. The lynch vote is the town's main weapon against third parties. The town get one power role in the form of the Union General, who can inspect a player at night to determine whether they are Union or Confederate.

Confederate Players are Mafia/Scum and win when all the Union players are dead. The Confederates have access to a quicktopic and have a Night Kill. The Confederates also have one player with an inspect ability, the Confederate General.

The Third Parties:
The Good: This player wins by keeping himself and the Ugly alive until the end of the game or until the Bad dies. The Good knows who the Ugly is and has a one-shot Nightkill. The Good comes up as Confederate to inspects
The Bad: The Bad wins by keeping himself alive until the game ends or the Good and the Ugly are dead. The Bad has a Nightkill. The Bad is essentially an SK with an additional goal. The Bad comes up as Union to inspects.
The Ugly: The Ugly wins by keeping himself and the Good alive until either the Bad dies or the game ends. The Ugly knows the identity of the Good. If the Confederates attempt to kill the Ugly, the kill will backfire and kill the one performing the kill. The Ugly also will survive the first time he is lynched, but his identity will be revealed. The Ugly comes up as Confederate to inspects.

When a third party wins or loses, and are still alive, they remain in the game, but with the Union win condition.

Roll To Dodge / Gunfight in the Saloon (Round 2)
« on: December 08, 2013, 08:54:24 pm »
Alright, so I had an idea for a game that was a cross between Mastahcheese's simple Six Shooter game and the card game Bang!.

So the way this game works is that everyone has a pistol with 6 bullets. The success of each shot is determined by a D6.

Spoiler: Roll Table (click to show/hide)

However, each player is sent a role via PM and with one exception, their role is kept secret from the other players.

Role List:

Sheriff: The head of the law in the town. Everyone knows who he is, thanks to the shiny star on his chest. His goal is to eliminate the Outlaws and the Renegade. (1)
Deputies: These men want to protect the Sheriff from harm and eliminate the Outlaws and the Renegade too. (2)
Outlaws: These three men only want the Sheriff dead at all costs. Even if they die in the process. (3)
Renegade: This man wants to survive, and be the last man standing. He needs everyone else to die in order for him to win.

I'll take 7 players for the first game
