Title: Nazusharel: Bloodwaters, a Community fortress
Post by: Urist Imiknorris on December 21, 2009, 02:22:51 pm
I just received orders from the King himself.
He wants us to establish an outpost.
IN THE DESERT.
Oh well, it's not nearly as crazy as that group he sent to some glacier, or the one he sent to bridge an ocean. I think he's starting to feel better - that cave-in last year probobly hurt his brain-thinky-thing.
As it stands, we have some preparation to do. The seven of us have to get all our gear together, and I still don't know most of them.
There's Ups, the miner. Good, hardy job for a dwarf to have. He also says he's a prety good siege engineer, so even better once we get set up.
Then there's Argatson. He claim's to be a carpenter and stonecrafter. I honestly don't believe him, but we'll see.
Dermonster is obviously a furnace operator of some sort. He won't be much use in the desert, but you never know. He claims to be the best glassmaker in the Mountainhome, so I hope he can use cacti as fuel.
There's a farmer, whos name escapes me for the moment.
We have a woodcutter, who calls herself 100killer9 (strangest name I ever heard), so I assume she can use that axe to cut through armor as well as trees.
And our full-time military, Comcastic. He's a macedwarf, and good at wrestling too.
Comcastic begged me to buy a mace, so he can train on any local animals. I agreed, and also bought him a buckler. Don't want him dying to a camel.
Dermonster requested some bags, so that he can get started making glass. No sooner said than done.
We couldn't bring an anvil, but we won't be needing it on this barren ocean of sand.
Since half of us like cats, I'll bring a kitten. Good for morale, and bad for vermin. Win-win!
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm feeling sober, and I HATE IT.

100killer9 is only my username to keep it consistent with my other usernames.

1st Granite, 403.
Great. Comcastic just told me that he went through the area and there were no animals at all. Figures. This sea of yellow hurts my eyes, no surprise there aren't any animals here.
The moment I said that, a dozen two-humped camels came in sight. Comcastic ran after them; They split up and ran away. Comcastic is still chasing them. We probobly won't see him for a while- those things are fast. Meanwhile Ups and I grabbed the picks and went to carve out a shelter. I rather like this mining thing. Really easy in soil, too.
The mighty hunter Comcastic has returned! With one kill. He said something along the lines of not being fast enough, so I'm trying to figure out a way to train him.
There are more trees here than we thought, and 100killer9 is still cutting. Meanwhile, our kitten seems to have adopted Dermonster. This is going to go really well when IF the frogmen start to show up. They might not even bother.
18th Granite
Our farmer's been griping about having nothing to do. I told him to start bringing our food inside, and went to dg a farming area.
We've gotten a small workshop area above ground, and our wood stockpile isn't looking bad either. Dermonster is making some charcoal for his glass furnace, I wish we had some magma. We can't really afford much wood.
It would be cheating to use out of character knowledge, so the dwarves have no idea about the magma pipe. Also, I may not be able to update much for a while. My internet connection is being very buggy and SLOW.

Right in our soon-to-be-central stairway! The local wildlife may be a problem- 5 fire imps, a fire man, and a magma man- but Comcastic might actually have some use now.
27th Granite I'm stumped. I have absoutely NO FUCKING IDEA what the hell's going on here. We just found the biggest goddamn garnierite vein I've ever heard of... In SCHIST. This place confuses me. Oh well, nickel is magma-safe, so once we smelt it, we can make some useful stuff.
(There are no journal entries for a large period of time.)
7th Hematite This garnierite vein is just ridiculous. It also hurts my eyes. (Not in picture: Argatson making stone crafts)
The fortress is starting to look more like a proper dwelling than a simple hole in the ground. We even have a defense system in place (though it won't stop building-destroyers, like the dreaded Giant Desert Scorpion)
Basically, in the event of an attack, we seal off the hatches at the top of the ramps, forcing the attackers to enter through the long single-tile hallway to the left. A pressure plate is hidden just before the far end of that tunnel, linked to floor hatches adjacent to it. Enemy steps on plate, hatches open, enemy is stranded, hallway is sealed, and catapult has a target. We just need a good operator (or failing that, luck.)
