Title: Offline Pirate Games
Post by: h3lblad3 on January 05, 2011, 01:54:30 am
EXCLUDING ONLINE GAMES

Any good offline pirating games?

For PC:
Sid Meier's Pirates!
X3 series? Maybe?

For Consoles:
Uncharted Waters series
Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat

I dunno, are there any other good pirate games?
Not necessarily just pirating, but with the choice/ability to do so.
I'll even take space ones.

It's basically Pirates! only even better.

Right, and as for the space ones, Space Rangers 2 lets you do some pirating, in addition to being generally awesome.

Never played it, but Dubloon (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Dubloon) looks pretty good. And apparently you can do piratey things in Oolite (http://www.oolite.org/).

They're both freeeeeee!

In Port Royale 2, you can choose to pirate.

Tropico 2 has you building a pirate base, as well as sending ships off on missions for plunder and exploration.

In Freelancer you can pirate the shipping lanes (This is a space game, though).

Those are the only ones I can think of at the moment though.

The Guild 2: Pirates of the European Seas offer piracy as a career choice, though it's not particularly interesting IMO. The Patrician series also seems to allow you to engage in piracy, though at a significant hit to your reputation.

In Freelancer you can pirate the shipping lanes (This is a space game, though).

You probably have more freedom to do this on multiplayer servers though. The singleplayer campaign would be trickier to complete if you piss off the local house you're in at the time. Though I suppose that's just added challenge.

X3 does have some freedom for pirates, but you'll have plot restrictions to contest with. You'd need to make friends with some races to get most of the plots done. Ultimately you'd probably be more of a rogue with shifting alliances, which could be fun in itself.
I know there are a few mods that make piracy more fun or easier to do, there's probably more where those came from. My only experience is with Terran Conflict though, I don't know how the previous games work with piracy. I assume they have as much freedom, if not more.

Can't really think of any other space ones, besides Darkstar One, which is probably similar to Freelancer in regards to piracy.

Age of Pirates 2

With mods it is almost playable without wanting to kill yourself because of the bugs and crappy interface, so "good" may be a stretch..but, it is very pirate-like and can be fun if you are in the right mood or are more tolerant than I am.

Space Piracy in Freelancer is a lot more like submarine warfare, if you ask me.

Actually, the very first Pirates of the Caribbean game was awesome. The only thing it had to do with the movie was the lore.

It's funny, (and by funny I mean strange but depressing) I wonder how many people know that this game was known as Sea Dogs 2 until one day the Sea Dogs 2 website was suddenly and mysteriously replaced by the Pirates of the Caribbean website and the Sea Dogs 2 forum completely vanished overnight.

It seems like Bethesda/Disney really got away with this one scot free.

The Escape Velocity games allow for some space piracy, and I know that EV Nova has a pirate storyline.

Sadly, EV Classic and EV Override are Mac-only, but some generous souls have designed some plug-ins for EV Nova should you want to play the first two games.

Also, anyone who hasn't played the Uncharted Waters series should; I'm enheartened to see that h3lblad3 knows of them.

 Play as Otto Baynes.

Aw, man, I always sucked terribly at Uncharted Waters. Even after I got in the habit of pre-loading my ship's crew to all fighting and just sailing up to the enemy captain for a boarding party.

Excellent game.

Use a SNES emulator, not DOSBOX.

Why?

It seems better to play with PC controls rather than SNES controls... At least, when I'm on a keyboard already.

I wasn't aware that there was a PC version, and the SNES controls worked out well enough for me.

It seems like Bethesda/Disney really got away with this one scot free.

To OP, try hitting up PiratesAhoy (http://www.piratesahoy.net/). The site focuses on wooden ships 'n pirates, and the forums can be a treasure trove for learning about upcoming swashbuckling titles.

And as to the quoted text above, yes. Many times yes. Disney be damned, the underlying game is great fun. The sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean has an extensive modding community, but to my mind it is not yet as advanced as the modding efforts that have gone into Pirates of the Caribbean. The forums for PiratesAhoy are home to the PotC BuildMod (http://forum.piratesahoy.net/forum/37-potc-build-mod/). A massive, and I mean that in every sense of the word, modding project that overhauls the base game in ways that cannot be fully explained, but I'll try. They even gained access to the source code for the base game, even better things are on the way.

Some features off the top of my head:
-New and more realistic Caribbean map.
-Sail from island to island in deck view (not the hokum zoomed out map)
-More realistic sailing, and sailing points.
-Cycling weather
-Cycling time
-Much improved trading system
-Better boarding actions
-A bunch more ships (that perform with a nice dollop of realism)
-Better quests
-More land based locations
-Random encounters
-Romance! (No SM Pirates! dancing and heaving bosoms)
-Multiple main story lines/eras to choose from.
-Overhauled character development.
-Some realism changes, like a fudging of data as to wind speeds and enemy ship info.
-More weapons and other items.
-Ability to fly false flags
-Many new diplo changes, and the situation with the powers in the Caribbean can be quite dynamic as a result.
-Many options that can be customised to preference.
-Many smaller mods are available to bring the experience more in line with your expectations.
-Crew management (food + wages + ability to customize both)

And I just know that I'm forgetting a lot of the excellent features. The BuildMod is buggy, but I've yet to play a game that rivals it. I queue some sea shanties up and then proceed to sail by the deck view only from island to island. Outrunning and outmaneuvering the Hun is just as fun and rewarding as combat is in this game. And the storms, wow. I just wish there were more sail settings to play around with. Give it a look, it might just be what you're looking for.

Not to sound truculent, but it came up before any SNES version for. The PC version is here (http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/276/Uncharted+Waters+2+-+New+Horizons.html).

That all sounds great.  But I'm curious, did they add back the other playable character they inexplicably removed when they changed the name to Pirates of the Caribbean?

This one; (http://www.gamershell.com/static/screenshots/798/19517_full.jpg)

Also, where the heck would I get this game?

Also also, there's a sequel to PotC?

Not at all, this simply ends the argument before it started to get to the middle. And provides a new opportunity.

This one; IMAGE SNIP

They added several back, including a female or two. Not sure if the pictured model is one of them. Just the initial character selection features several choices, once in-game you're able to purchase new outfits that completely change the clothing or character model of the PC. A generic Portuguese sailor, and on to a comely red headed lass, to a scrubby lookin' merchant. I recommend double-checking what outfit you're about to buy so as to lessen the chances for an accidental 16th century sex change. You can also buy outfits/model changes for your companions, as well as customizing names and such, so you could sail the Caribbean with a crew of buxom wenches (no matter what sex, shape, or clothing they originally joined you in). Or a grungy bunch of sea salts lookin' for loot in all the wrong places. In the latest build version you're also able to purchase modifications and different looks for your fleet of ships. I wasn't kidding when I said it was a massive mod. Checkout the forums I linked to in my post above. Or see if this Youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46kmqWgBJAI&feature=related) gets you hot and bothered enough to just dive right into the experience.

There is a sequel (or two), but as of yet the modding efforts are not nearly organised or puissant enough to take my attention away from the BuildMod (aka PotC: New Horizons). In time I think Age of Pirates 2: City of Abandoned ships (the latest in the SeaDogs/PotC line) will become the new bestest option for Yarr induced high seas hijinx, but that day is not yet come. Checkout the PiratesAhoy! forums, there is a dedicated modding forum for the sequel to PotC, as well as several other games.

PotC is from 2003, and it looks it*. Its age also makes it somewhat difficult to locate it for purchase at a reasonable price as it is so long out of date. Amazon has it on for $50 (http://www.amazon.com/Pirates-Caribbean-Pc/dp/B00009YUGP/ref=sr_1_1?s=software&ie=UTF8&qid=1294289953&sr=1-1). I can't comment upon whether $50 is a reasonable price for a seven year old game, so you may want to locate other online retailers that are a tad more reasonable. I suppose if you were sufficiently motivated by the cavalier bravado of the sailing scoundrel you might enter into a swashbuckling frame of mind well before finding, buying, installing and firing up the game, leading to a self-fulfilling sort of a situation.

Good Pirate games are difficult to find, but piracy itself is not condoned here on Bay12 as far as I am aware, so I wish you the best of luck in finding it for purchase.

*And behaves like it. Russian dev, buggy game. Massive mod with quite a number of bugs to add to the mix. But honestly, we're on the DF forums. If you can dodge a wrench...
