Ummm, yeah, thats a river......
« on: January 19, 2012, 04:51:55 am »

I was looking for a good, high river embark, perfect for long, winging walkways into watery graves below, and I cam e across THIS:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

.......I'd say THATS a river. It's 50 friggin tiles wide(I counted!), and takes up most of the 4x4 embark! too much work for me to put a walkway across, but I thought I'd post this for your veiwing pleasure

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

going to be the first to ask...
Save? (possibly with a reclaim possibility on the location)

I've been looking for something like this for ... well, a long time. You don't happen to have worldgen details and a guide to the location, do you?   :D

crap, already abandoned(well, actually, used dfhack's die utility). I'll have to copy the world and run it to find that location again, when I get around to it., however, I can post worldgen parameters if you guys can tell me how...

Just look for "Major River" in the embark map.

Just look for "Major River" in the embark map.

Quote from: DF wiki
Rivers come in a variety of sizes from the major rivers spanning as wide as 40 tiles to tiny brooks which are only four tiles wide.

Major rivers can be identified on the regional map by their double dark blue lines which easily identifies them from other types of rivers which only have single lines. Major rivers are the largest rivers, potentially exceeding 40 tiles in width. Usually they have minor river tributaries and can often feed large lakes. The massive amount of flowing water found in a major river may have a negative effect on your fps.

Congratulations, it did not kill your FPS! Update the wiki.

If you're going to upload a save, do it at http://dffd.wimbli.com/ . On how, we need more information.

My current fort is built into extremely steep cliffs surrounding a river which is considerably wider than that. See: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=95451.msg2716906#msg2716906

But, that is a pretty good-sized river!

Honestly, I like to find a river, and then cut myself another river path. That way I've got my fort on an island.

Or you could wait for it to freeze over in winter, dig out the ice in the middle and wall it up/floor it over as fast as possible to build your island.

As I've never done it myself before, what would be the consequences of building a fort on top of the frozen river, not held there by any support when it melts?
