Must be because we Finn's find the dorfs to be so similar to ourselves.
Often drinking, and often overcome with stupid suicidal behavior or violent and suicidal behavior.
Just like with that sauna thing that labelled us all as stupid barbarians who are stupid and barbarians.

I just thought I'd share.
I have spoke to a few mixed german and polish crowds and I hardly ever get positive responses about dwarf fort.Thats because they are heretics and need to be purged in the Dwarf Emperor's name.

@cyks: you spoke to the wrong crowd, apparently.

Also note that the 40K universe couldn't handle the dwarfs, and they were expunged...I'd rather say the dwarves couldn't handle the 40K and left for DF.
No, they got bored and left for DF.

Be careful, you're mixing your excessively violent and suicidally bleak gaming settings. In DF, it's 7 alcoholic squats against an unforgiving world, psychotic clowns and an uncaring and fickle player. In 40K, it's uncounted billions with an unforgiving and uncaring god-emperor (well, mostly his priests and bureaucrats) against psychotic and fickle xenos, heretics and traitors. Granted, the characters are doomed in both settings, but you need to keep the wild-eyed zealotry in the correct game... ;)
edit: The elves in both settings deserve to die slow-ish. Also note that the 40K universe couldn't handle the dwarfs, and they were expunged...
I wonder if there's something about the Finns socially that attracts them to this kind of gameplay far more than even the nation (and language) this game was built in?
Actually, I find this very interesting... especially since this game is only released in English, but English-speakers are only third most popular.I doubt the language has much negative impact in Finland at least, seeing how most of our entertainment is in English. With Finnish subtitles when it's on TV, but still.
Was gonna say. Finnish is about as dominant a language in Finland as Welsh is in Wales, from what I've seen/read/heard.Actually, I find this very interesting... especially since this game is only released in English, but English-speakers are only third most popular.I doubt the language has much negative impact in Finland at least, seeing how most of our entertainment is in English. I know that European gamemakers have very different views on gamemaking philosophy, especially in the board game market. I wonder if there's something about the Finns socially that attracts them to this kind of gameplay far more than even the nation (and language) this game was built in?

Yeah, it's not like we speak English all the time. IMO, Finns might write and read in English well, but actually speaking in English is pretty difficult for many. Still it's a lot more like Finland's second language than the the actual second language. Was gonna say. It's not that Finns don't speak Finnish: we love our language. It's just that we also speak english very well. Why? We have to, to be able to communicate with outside world. Finnish language is kinda alien to any non-Finn.
It's not about Dwarf Fortress specifically, it's just that Finns are shut-ins who like doing a lot of Google searches. It can show up in amusing (http://www.google.com/trends?q=goatse&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0) places.WHAT THE FU- BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOURG *Mwahahaha* UUUUUUUUUUOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
Finland is awesome. You like metal, DF, coffee, library books, and rally driving.http://www.migri.fi/netcomm/default.asp ;)

Yep, DF is pretty known in Finland. I've said it before, but a stranger actually interrupted a discussion I was having with a friend only to ask if we were talking of Dwarf Fortress. Which we were. That's awesome.
And on another occasion, after watching a movie with a group of six people, someone mentioned DF and it turned out every person knew the game from different sources.
Oh cool, Dwarfish actually has the words to write my last name. So, you can call me Eshimid from now on. And if we end up in the same fortress and get to first name terms, Lashëd is pretty close to that. Lashëd Eshimid.
SUOMI FINLAND PERKELE!...
I am in the Denmark category of Dwarf Fortress players but I have been to Finland about two times for festival purposes and I adore that country; especielly because of their alcohol and saunas. So yeah, guess that's the reason why I love this game so much.

Finnish alcohol ain't that special. For example I'd rather enjoy most other lagers over the domestic ones we have here. Trust me, I've tried and tasted them. Maybe a bit too much even :(
I always thougth it was the about the amount, not the quality ;D
We in Finland like our granite and woodcrafts. Beer and cider too and the Finnish variant of Vodka. Got hella lot forests and lakes.
I put the Finnish language into my DF, and you can have it too:
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2921
I have dwarf names like Muuri TasapainoSauva, Veitsi MieliJäristys, Esine KultausKupari, Kaari DuuniPauke, Uurna KirkasVuori, Järistys Maa-autuus (miner), Valli PulmaHiili.
I've tested the language with site names, dwarf names, and goblin names.
And yet, I can't get any of my friends to actually try DF out.
Maybe we're just good at doing google searches.
