Creative Projects / Overseer - a light novel Worm x Dwarf Fortress story
« on: February 21, 2017, 03:06:00 pm »
I wrote this a while back, but I don't think I ever linked it here.  If I did, I wasn't able to find it with a quick search for some reason.  I put it on Fanfiction.net the other day.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12374063/1/Overseer

A young woman from the Worm universe triggers with the power to summon Dwarves from a saved Dwarf Fortress game. She finds herself pitted against the S9, a group of superpowered murderhobos who really are as dangerous and sick as the stories say they are. Can Overseer Shayla survive the siege and preserve her fortress from these invaders?

Creative Projects / Crossover fiction side project - Worm & Dwarf Fortress
« on: February 05, 2015, 02:27:51 pm »
I've started a little project based in the Worm universe by Wildbow.  Shayla, a young-20's LARP and Dwarf Fortress fan is induced to a trigger event by the S9.  The Master power she acquires allows her to draw dwarves and their materials out of saved Dwarf Fortress games into the real world.  Her sanity is not exactly intact.  Her dwarves obey her, mostly.  The S9 are coming back soon to try to recruit her, kill her, or give her to Bonesaw as a sockpuppet.

And she needs a drink.  NOW!

I and several other writers at Wordpress are looking into alternative places to write, if Wordpress continues to ignore it's user base and embraces a re-enactment of the first voyage of the Titanic.

One of the things we like at Wordpress is that the readers and authors can chat back and forth in a way much like a forum, but unlike a forum, the readers can't clutter the main thread...

I'm curious if there is any forum software out there that can emulate this.  Here's what I'm imagining.  It's not all critical, but the higher on the list it is, the more critical it is.

1)  Writer establishes an account.
2)  Writer creates a writing project thread.

The project thread is locked.  Only the writer can post there.

3)  Each post in the project thread opens a NEW subordinate thread.  That thread is open for general comments.

4)  A way to 'like' posts.
5)  RSS support required.
6)  Hit metrics by project thread and project post.
7)  Referrer information.
Eight)  Click-out information. (Darn Smiley)
9)  Many writers can participate.
10)  Writers can open a new thread for each writing project.
11)  Some sort of way for users to see what other readers who read X are reading.  Perhaps by direct comparing likes.

In other words, a forum with a functional style a lot like Wordpress pre-Titanic, but more focused on writers and our needs.

Other Games / Are there any Steampunk MMO crafting games out there?
« on: August 22, 2014, 05:17:45 am »
I'm thinking something like Worm Online, but Steampunk rather than Fantasy.

Anyone seen such a beast?  Everything in game made by players, with terraforming, and a steampunk theme?

Bonus points if there are zombies, and they can be harnessed for power.

Double Bonus Points if there is the option of PVP, and your dead enemies become zombies you can use to power your war machines.

I am having such fun imagining a world like this.  Tell me it exists somewhere!

Creative Projects / Reject Hero Blogfiction
« on: June 29, 2014, 07:15:37 pm »
Reject Hero is the story of Zeke Collins, a middle-aged man who acquires powers and abilities beyond those of normal men, becoming part of the superhuman community.  He wants to be a hero, but his peculiar powers are not exactly hero material.  The heroes don’t want him on their side, not after he activates his powers near them in a fight. Everyone hates him when he uses his powers, even villains. Civilians hate his alter ego so much, they forced a name on him that he can’t escape. This is the story of the super-person, ‘Strangest’

Come by and let me know what you think.  I got a substantial start before posting here.  There are 15 chapters of 3k+ words each.

Creative Projects / "Symbiote" Original fiction by me. Updated daily-ish
« on: December 01, 2013, 03:49:37 am »
As mentioned in the nanowrimo thread, I've put 20 chapters into an ongoing web serial fiction so far.  I didn't do it for nanowrimo though, I sortof caught the writing bog from watching this guy:  http://parahumans.wordpress.com/2011/06/11/1-1/

Wildbow showed me by example that serialized fiction is fun, and gave a damn good example of how it's done.  Go there.  Read it.  Even if you don't check out my stuff at all, read Worm.  The first few chapters are a bit slow but it picks up pretty fast.  In total it's about 2 million words, and there's all sorts of complex interactions between characters and concepts if you like that stuff, but plenty of simple straightforward smackdown if you like that.  Grey morality superhero universe.  Wildbow understands the Blood God.

As for my stuff?  A middle aged guy discovers one day that he has a symbiote when it starts talking to him and demonstrating some of the things it can do for him, and we go from there.  Modern fiction, I'm shooting for (mostly) smart enemies, and a hero with faults, trying to figure out what the fork is happening in the world with the human and symbiote populations.

The first book is seventeen chapters.  The second book is sitting at three chapters now.  I update daily-ish with posts that average about 3k words.  Feel free to stop by.  You can throw fruit either there or here :)

http://farmerbob1.wordpress.com/

The first few chapters were terrible for tense errors.  Several chapters in Book 1 might still have tense errors.  Working on that, but the worst of the narration tense stuff should be fixed, at least up to chapter 1.5

Book 1 = 17 chapters
Book 2 = 18 chapters
Book 3 up to the 2nd chapter now

DF Suggestions / Odd wording in d_init

Set this to NO to make Dwarf Fortress remain in the saved pause state when you load an active game.

[PAUSE_ON_LOAD:YES]

Please examine the logic behind the variable name and the description of how to use the variable.  It hurts my brain every time I look at it :)

DF Suggestions / Child and Pet AI change
« on: February 10, 2013, 03:31:05 pm »
Currently, children and pets seem to be very centric on their parents, frequently causing issues when the parents go and do dangerous things.

This is all very dwarfy, but for dwarven children, (not babies!) perhaps an AI touchup in regards to pets might be a good idea?

If a fortress has domestic animals that are capable of being pets, why not start bonding the pets and the children, not necessarily with adoption/firm relationships, but rather a caretaker arrangement.

If you have a pasture area, children would have the "job" of tending the pasture.  Nothing would stop them from doing whatever else they might want to do, but rather than being parent-centric, the children would be pasture-centric.

Taking care of domestic animals and notifying adults of problems with said animals has a long human tradition - it's an efficient use of a set of eyes and ears that aren't ready to do more difficult tasks.  I can't imagine that dwarves wouldn't have done the same thing.

In terms of gameplay, it would make children less likely to be accidental casualties in mining accidents, lava flow, drowning, goblin snatching, etc, provided that the pastures are well-located.  It might also help pathing framerates in fortresses where some female dwarves have 10+ children following them around like a train.

DF Suggestions / Diggles - yes from Dredmor
« on: December 28, 2012, 12:57:51 am »
A bit of back scratching for another game that was made by DF fans

Dungeons of Dredmor devs VERY obviously play DF, there are DF Easter eggs all over the game.

So... diggles, giant diggles and werediggles in Dwarf Fortress, if the Dredmor guys wouldn't object?

I somehow doubt they would object at all.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Human kangaroo god in my fort, lol
« on: December 12, 2012, 06:00:31 am »
o.0

I just got a human diplomat in.

It's a one-eyed kangaroo deity.

This is 100% vanilla 34.11, I don't even use tilesets.

And... it has deadly dust.  Here's to hoping that deadly dust only kills if you fight it, I'm going to try trading with the humans, and cross my fingers, lol.

I'll make a copy of the save too, and put it on DFFD, just in case this isn't supposed to happen?  Or if anyone just wants to play with it :)

After I get it uploaded I'll post the link here.

DF Suggestions / Allow unhappy dwarves to leave your fortress
« on: December 10, 2012, 06:20:54 pm »
Seems like the development process is working towards world persistence.

Rather than have Urist continue to get madder and madder as their mood gets worse and worse, why not allow sufficiently upset dwarves the option of simply waking up one day and walking off the map.

After they decide to leave, they will change to a non-commandable unit like a caravan merchant, and attempt to leave your fortress in the same manner that diplomats and merchants do.

Non adult children and spouses would follow.  Adult children would stay or go based on their happiness.

Other Games / Dwarf Fortress Tower Defense game
« on: December 09, 2012, 03:08:03 am »
I want a dwarf Fortress Tower Defense game.

All the mechanics for DF mechanisms and water/magma same as in the game, except what you make has to fit the maps, and you have a dwarf labor budget to install the mechanisms.

Imagine Dwarf Fortress meets Tower Defense meets Fantastic Contraption.

I will be turning it into a community game unless I find something completely broken, but this site is just too nice to keep to myself.
