bring your own moderator
This gives me an idea for a mafia variant:

Eight players, eight games, each player is a mod of a game and player in the rest. If a player dies in one game, the game they're modding is lost. All games happen simultaneously. Bring-Your-Own-Mod ends when one of its games ends in a win for one team. Everything happens in the same thread.
This sounds amazing, and terrible, and amazing!

On an unrelated note, who here has had that experience where you are modding a game and really want to interject commentary in the chats, then remind yourself that you are the mod and say nothing?
*snickers at this in private, then quickly stops*

HMMM.

Okay, I must ask, what exactly is the allure of running bastard mods?

I have a reason for asking this, I'm not quite insane enough that I have no reasons.

:)

That's a bastard mod. Fun in puzzles. Think out of box.
Is there a box?

They present the additional challenge of figuring out rules and strategies. It's also fun to play with nonstandard rules from time to time.

Note the word RUNNING in my question.

I use words carefully.

Okay, I must ask, what exactly is the allure of running bastard mods?
Basically, you get to shove a nice puzzle at your players, which is fun to create.
Then you get to watch them struggle to solve the puzzle while still killing each other (and you).  Such struggling is likely to be hilarious to watch.

They can also allow more direct moderator activity than other games, in some cases.

eh, I trolled my players quite enough in the early days of Orbfalls, to the point where I have massive Q&A lists to answer any conceivable questions and they still had some questions.  Which may actually be partly the players trolling me, now that I think about it.

I'm actually thinking of writing up some rules for a Mafia set up that would have so many odd and bizarre rules that I think I'd have to call it "bastard", but I'll show more when I actually have some work on it, it's all theoretical so far.

SO.
I'm running Mafia in another forum~
I now seem to have found out firsthand why it was explicitly mentioned that asking one's favorite ice cream is a bad thing.  :'(
If that's the only thing being asked.
