About 3 years before my latest fortress was completely overrun by goblins, I had a cat come in with an immigrant wave.  When the original owner died, the cat, as expected, reverted to "uninterested" status, and adopted a child.

Unfortunately, the child was kidnapped by a goblin while playing outside, and my squad of military dwarves wasn't fast enough for a rescue.  I subsequently got the "has died in a cage" message.  The cat, however, seemed to think that the child was still its owner, even two years after the child's death.

Two other cats in that fortress adopted a leatherworker (who died in a flood), the broker (who starved in his locked room after demanding green diamond items), and ultimately, a mechanic, before the fortress fell.

Is it possible that "died in a cage" doesn't properly update the child's death?  I did notice that at least one parent became upset, and had "has lost a child" as a bad thought.  So I'm curious why the cat didn't revert?

Yeah, it's possible, since, despite the message (which I may have gotten rid of now), the child doesn't actually die.  The cat should probably still be updated though, so I've noted this down.

The child doesn't die from being roasted alive and made into a thoroughly nourishing meal for the goblins?  What then do the goblins do with them?  ..Do they raise the kids as their own or something?  If so, will future DF releases have them appear as part of gob sieges?
