Is there anything wrong with that? i use lol and rofl in situations where normal(loud) laughter would be awkward.

You can suppress your laughter enough to just say "LOL"?  If that's the case, then you aren't actually laughing...

Unless you're referring to the electronic medium, in which case you just haven't learned to type laughter properly.

Depending on its linguistic and social context, the letter 'a' in the English language can represent any one of five different sounds, in addition to the diphthong by which we name it.  "Normal" doesn't really have any meaning.

Sorry, linguistics student and fan of phonetics here.  Having said all that, I don't personally know what sound the umlaut-A represents.  (Does it depend on the language it comes from?)

Just think of the phonetic a. Now extend it and make it flatter. It doesn't get much simpler than that. Or you could use almighty Google.

I normally speak in near perfect BBC English (which is actually sort of embarrassing sometimes) but if you listen long enough, you'll notice the odd phrase or word from a game or an obscure language.
