DF General Discussion / Orc Cancels Siege: Too Cold
« on: September 04, 2009, 06:33:02 pm »
So I've been generating world after world in an attempt to spawn a nice site that's cold, has magma, underground water, etc. etc. in a 4x4 or smaller space. Rather than wait for one at random, I set it up the gen so there's a ton of volcanoes and the temperature max is 25.

Anyways, I'm running with both temperature and weather on when I get my first siege (running the Dig Deeper mod, so its orcs in steel armor). Naturally, I button up and hunker down... when I notice one of the orcs had died. Odd.

On my previous looks I hadn't noticed any wildlife, so I think "hmm, might be a giant cave spider!" So I zoom around excited, but no, they're just lying there dead. Huh. I point to one of the orcs and check for injuries, and surprisingly, their arms are all brown or yellow.

Did I mention the max temperature is 25? The orcs are freaking dying of frostbite!! I LOVE THIS GAME

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Good luck, or bad luck?
« on: March 11, 2009, 07:56:18 pm »
So here I am, just booting up a new fort with orc mod. I fully expected to get raped in the first year, so I have to dig in as fast as possible.

I dig into the mountain. I set up hallways with sniper-points. I arrange for the farms, the workshops, even have a dining hall planned. I got it all planned out and I'm ready to rock. I unpause the game and start digging.

Three levels down, in my central staircase. "You've struck Adamantine! Praise the miners!"

...

God damnit.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Your most uber "Duh" moments
« on: March 05, 2009, 04:06:56 am »
I know there's a million topics for "best fort" or "best artifact", but not near enough "best -dur- moments". It'll make the newbs feel better, I'm sure.

Probably one of my better ones happened just today. My dwarves weren't moving seeds, roasts, or drink even letting it rot in the kitchens. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what was going on, so in desperation, I dumped it all in my garbage disposal (a trapdoor over a magma vent), hoping the bugged items disappearing would fix it. But it didn't!!

About a season later, I figured out I had turned "Forbid Food" on. DURRRR.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Execution Method
« on: November 26, 2008, 06:10:11 pm »
What is your favorite method of execution?

So far, mine has to be the "Pillar of Blood" - make a very tall, narrow tower with a hole in the center and a wide base. Take the sacrifice to the top, and throw him down the center to splat on the bottom level, giving loads of gooey blood up to Armok.

My second favorite would have to be dropping them into a small 4x4 room completely filled with serrated blade traps. I call it "the shredder".

DF General Discussion / Failure to Recover Wounded (Solution)
« on: November 19, 2008, 12:02:17 pm »
I did a search of the forum and only found this mentioned in one or two places a while back, so I figured I should start a new thread.

Every now and then a dwarf will get injured in combat - no big deal, right? But the job to recover them will get cancelled (usually for the same reason they were injured in the first place, a goblin hanging around there) and no new job is spawned, even though you have 30+ idle dwarves.

Well I did find out the solution, strange as it may seem. You have to actually tell the INJURED DWARF to "Activate/Deactivate", to reset their jobs and make them remember "oh yeah I need to be rescued!". It should spawn a new Recover Wounded job after that.

Strange but true.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Argh! Die clutter/blood die!!
« on: November 07, 2007, 04:56:00 am »
Call me a perfectionist, call me a neat freak, but I hate this blood bug! And the stones that are EVERYWHERE! ARGH!

Anyone have any good fixes for this? At the moment, all I could come up with was modding the init files with [NOBLEED] on all the creatures.

For the stones though, I put a garbage dump next to the magma vent. They toss it in, and it melts and disappears. (Bwaha, melt useless stone, melt!)

... anyways, anyone have any better suggestions?
