Title: Dwarves spending time with things and people they like.
Post by: Bytyan on February 13, 2012, 02:56:52 am
I think dwarves should spend their breaks seeking out things they have preferences for or people they are friends with, rather thans sitting in their rooms. I would be a subtle way of adding personality to each dwarf, and keeping them in harms way. This would get more extreme at the extreme ends of the mood bar, with depressed dwarves sleeping by the graves of lost loved ones and ecstatic dwarves finding their way into Urst mcSherifswife's bed, much to the dismay of Urist mcSherif.

Making dwarves do something during breaks has been suggested:

This objection is generic, poorly substantiated, unconstructive, and does not create a basis for discussion.  Please flesh out your objections before posting them.

Although it has been suggested before, I like the way this suggestion handles the idea. It makes perfect sense that a dwarf would want to spend time with another dwarf that it likes (i.e. hanging out with its friends). It might even lead to dwarves with poor social skills (and thus fewer friends) feeling quite isolated if everyone is staying close to their friends, forming little groups and you get poor Onul No-Mates standing around on his own, becoming slowly more depressed. On the other hand, if the dwarf doesn't like people, they might be quite content on their own (or be happy about it).

Meh. We are talking about dwarves, not humans. Who knows what sort of culture or social outlook they'd really have?

I think you can guess based on the Dwarven personality descriptions. It would be different to us, yes, but not to the point that this suggestion is negated.

Dwarves value history and have creative free thought, as we can see in their artwork. They create social networks, and when they are unhappy relly on them to bring them out of their black funk. They take pets for no better reason than an intrinsic love of things warm and alive. Do dwarves dream? It's debatable. But it doesn't seem like that much of a stretch to assume they enjoy their friends, and they enjoy the waves and pandas and dogs the carve and embroider, and might want to spend time with them.

Apologies to footkerchief, I found threads not lining up as nicely with my idea as yours, and assumed that it might be worth putting another way. I will be more diligent in my search next time I wish to bring forward an idea.

Edit: Double post! What a rush!

I like this idea, but I can se it being awfully difficult to code in without majorly impacting FPS as any idle dwarf compares paths to various things that they like.
