Title: What do you think is the best weapon?
Post by: Dr.Propz on February 16, 2012, 11:53:59 am
Just curious. I've been playing with giant axes so I could disarm enemies, but once I get to the point where they wear metal armor I'm screwed

Well that depends what you want to use it for. A whip can easily incapacitate an unarmoured or medium armoured opponent in two turns , but an axe can chop of a limb 50% of the time , while a crossbow can one shot people tiles away.

Two-handed swords are my favorite, and knives for trowing, i often one-hit people with those.

I prefer BLUNT weapons, due to how zombies work. If you're going to reanimate a corpse, you want it to stay in one piece.

I usually go with spears and pikes, Because i find them good against armored and unarmored opponents,
and they're great at poking vital organs on pretty much anything.

Halberd. All the hacking power of an axe, with the stabbiness of a sword.

Any weapon that can be multigrasped.

Not sure, but anything multigrasped should give you more "oomph" in your swing, which'll lead to more severed lower bodyparts :)

Mining picks are awesome and nigh unstoppable if made out of steel or better and of high quality.

I've tried menacing spikes and giant axe blades, but picks always seem to work out better.

I'll second that daggers are bad ass throwing weapons and I make it a point to collect any I find on my adventurers.

Modded weapons all the way!

Spoiler: Song Hammer (click to show/hide)

The best part is that my enemies have them too, so it's not even unbalanced!  I actually ran into a trap with one of these, but I luckily spotted it before I would have tripped it.

For vanilla weapons, I'm a big fan of the longsword.  You get slashing, stabbing, and blunt attacks rolled into one.

Whips are stupid op against anything with pain receptors.
Picks are the de-facto ohk/dismember/penetration weapons.
Throwing/ranged I'll ignore.

On all opponents, picks and whips beat out all other weapons by a mile.
On unarmored opponents, picks edge out whips.
As opponents become more and more armored, the whips begin gaining traction and by the time adamantine rolls around picks are outclassed by landslide.
However, whips are useless against undead/collossi.
Picks can ohk collossi.

Gimme a sec and I'll link to !SCIENCE! from last version.

Colossi, yeah, there's no way to kill one with blunt attacks. I've been using hammers instead of whips, but I've been consistently OHKing zombies with a hit to any body part (the reraised corpse variety). Mummies should be able to be decapitated with blunt weapons, since I could tear off all of their limbs, but I didn't try.

Unfortunately, as far as I tried, you can't multigrasp one-handed weapons. It apparently only works with two-handed weapons

It was possible in 31.25 too. If you carried a weapon that was too big/heavy for your size, and had both hands free, your character automatically multigrasped. I think there were heavy penalties otherwise (when trying to use shield/weapon in the other hand).

Find a 2h weapon (Lets say a iron 2h sword)

Equip 2h weapon

Drop whatever you have in your other hand

Your 2h weapon should now say (multigrasped) instead of left/right hand.

So you can now use a shield to block, then when you get close, drop your shield and hack away with a 2h weapon!

I've seen multigrasp before in the last version, human pikemen being the most common example.

However, from what I understand there is no bonus at all for doing this and you're better off using a shield with a 2-h sword. Or there is no penalty for using a two handed weapon with one hand.

Unless somebody can demonstrate otherwise, preferably with !!science!!. Could probably be settled in Arena Mode.

The Pick.  Above all other options.  Armor fails against it.  Limbs get severed.  Things die in droves.

*EDIT*  I correct myself, bolts and arrows are just as good, and plentiful for melee use.

i'm putting my vote in the iron longsword basket... it goes through limbs like butter and doesn't get stuck like the bigger, but more powerful iron two handed sword. Great axes are nice too, but they also tend to get stuck in the body.

Long swords. Even a copper one works extremely well.

First a question. How can A person get a Human gut?

Second my fav weapon is a shortsword. The reason I can duel with shiel to get up close and drop it(shield) to disarm opponent. For some reason it seems to be more effective than daggers for my current hero at any rate. That said this is also a !FUN! way of playing. Ps the versatility of a sword is why I use it since I can stab to stop them from moving or chop to cut off the easier limbs. Although I admit it is not the best weapon in terms of stat.

Toady One himself told long time ago that if a weapon is big enough for you to multigrasp, holding it in one hand reduces your chance to hit twice. There should be an old "attack formula" thread of mine where I quote him on that.

I like whips and pic-axes myself. Sucks you can't take mining at start. For throwing I like sharp rocks, they are expendable, and if your knapping is good enough (And it is easy to grind) quite effective.

In previous versions, with the pointlessness of amassing wealth and the abundance of fine weapons, eventually I'd be throwing around +<<+Iron Pick(s)+>>+ like balled-up pieces of paper. Gave nasty paper-cuts too.

Recently, I have started to like morningstars (I start adventures as maceman), simply because morning star, it addition to bashing, does quite a lot of organ and tissue tearing (due to spikes, I presume). Plus, I don't know how they are simulated in the game, but they should have a bonus to hit. Morning star IRL is a weapon that is both difficult to control and difficult to defend against.

Halberds. Stabby stab cutters they are. Whips are good too, but that's assuming you only want to dent brains and avoid dismembering corpses for reanimation.

Also, any weapon that severs a limb when thrown.

Dual-wielding scimitars. salami slice tactics at the beginning and vs. tougher opponents (severing arms, legs etc until its incapable of doing harm then stab for the head), with high skills headshot-stabs to one-hit pretty much everything. pretty nice vs. groups, since you can severe legs to thin out the lines and with every severed part there is one guy less running right after you. some problems vs necromancers due to the high chop-off chance, i tend to use kicking/punching vs. corpses...the collapse with one or two hits, even though my skills are not that high.

I find that the most brutal weapons are melee wielded arrows and bolts.  Seriously just stab away, they are almost unstoppable.

Previously I felt pick was best.  However picks are a lot harder to find in adv mode than high quality arrows and bolts.  Also cause they are so light they have little impact on speed.

Why stop at 20?

Also cause they are so light they have little impact on speed.
Wouldn't that also impact their ability to penetrate? Hmm, silver bolts are depleted-uranium lasers, (or were, it's been a while), so maybe not. You should try to kill a colossus and get back to us with the results.

Arena Test with a steel bolt on colossus reveals:

It can cripple a leg in 1 hit.  But cannot sever anything.

Then again virtually all weapons fail to kill these and everyone knows to either kill them with throwing or by forcing them to dodge off cliffs so really its a useless evaluation.  And if anything the leg crippling facilitates the throwing or the running away and is thus quite helpful.

Against anything that bleeds, feels pain, or needs armor bypassed it is devastating.  Especially given that limb hits do that bone chipping thing that causes immense pain and most body shots hit organs.

On a serious note, while i realise there is a certain amount of !!science!! behind blunt weapons, probably warhammers, being the best in some number-crunchy sense, I find myself prefering swords.

When it come to lights out kills they do fine, longsword to the skull is nearly as sure a kill as hammer to the skull. Never mind breaking limbs, they take them off, and they seem to do a better job of body injury, aside perhaps from making people sick with a stomach blow. If the enemy is very tough and you cant land a CNS hit you can do the death of 1000 cuts. They'll bleed out eventually if you pierce a couple organs and generally slash them up. Marginal blunt weapon hits seem to do almost nothing, not even bleeding.

All weapons serve their own niche so really it's a matter of ones play style that decides what works best-

The Regular Weapons:

Pike & Spear - Useful armor busters, can penetrate deep, and make awesome support weapons. The only real downside of the Pike and Spear is that they both fall in two different categories of weapon use. Still, they work well.

Hammer - Precision bashing best describes Hammers. Use them to get through the armored opponents and break their bones, before finishing them off with a strike through their Helmets. Mauls are also two handed so if you want to just crush something you'll have that option.

Mace - Ye old Mace vs Warhammer may favor the Warhammer but Maces include much more then just the simple Mace. Flails and Morningstars make Maces an extremely versatile weapon class; with Maces working best on unarmored opponents and Morningstars crushing armored ones, Flails coming somewhere in the middle. The only downside of the Mace user is that no mace is Two Handed.

Axe - Arm and leg choppers is what an Axe is all about. An Axe will dismember and disembowel, especially if made of good quality. There is also a lot of diversity in the type of Axe you can use, with the Greataxe being an extremely devasting Two Handed Weapon for unarmored opponents, Battle Axes being One Handed and good with Shields, and the Halberd being a little less effective but decent with the stabbing ability for those armored opponents.

Whip - The lightsabres of Dwarf Fortress, a whip will quickly incapacitate an enemy causing them to give in to pain, before a strike to the head will finish them off - with or without armor or helmets! Hammers and Maces might do this but the Whip truly focuses on doing it.

Sword - The most versatile of the weapon classes, great for slice and dice with quick sword thrust to the face! Swords shine for their ability to inflict multiple types of attacks, and coming in various sizes along with the Two Handed Sword makes them a winner for all types of strategies that use them.

The Irregular

Bow & Crossbow - While they work the same for now, the Bow and Crossbow are 2 of the 3 launches in game that players can easily access. Bow's and Crossbow's are perhaps some of the most deadly weapons, only faltering in the fact that it takes a while to reload. They can also be used in melee but if your going to do that you should pull out a different weapon. Bow's and Crossbow's are invaluable support weapons.

Knife - Don't underestimate the simple knife, Knives make for one of the lightest weapons and they can be used in a simple stabbing attack. This makes them a great secondary weapon for say Bowman or Crossbowman. It's also a fairly nice weapon for Wrestlers who want to forgo the Shield. You start with a Knife in the beginning when you make a character in adventure mode, though only Human Outsiders can naturally begin training in the skill.

Pick - Picks technically fall under the Mining skill, but they are perhaps some of the deadliest weapons in game. They tear through solid rock so it is no surprise they tear through armor. They also can lob off body parts. The real problem though is finding them.

Blowgun - Never used them but I'll note they are here. Like picks they are hard to find.

***

Personally from the list I like Swords the best, being the most versatile weapon for any situation and being available to Dwarves, Humans, and Elves for training. However this doesn't mean it's the best - the best weapon will always be the one that wins out in the specific situation, and that could really be anything.

The Irregular
Eagle guts
Severed monkey tails
Zombie heads.

Seriously, nothing better than an army of heads hopping around and biting people until they are kaputt.

I was tempted to add Misc. Objects but I figured it would be too difficulty to describe the broadness that the skill would encompass.

I found a blowgun underground once near one of my old fortress never made it out to use it.
   My favorite is an axe.

Now that I think about it... what the hell do blowguns fire in-game, anyway? I've seen plenty of animal-folk blowgunners in the caverns in my day, but I've never seen the ammo listed. I propose that blowguns fire either tiny pebbles or supersonic bits of hair. This theory shall stand until !!SCIENCE!! proves me wrong. TO THE ARENA

My first cavern layer always seems to have a calm little tribe of serpentmen for me to treat like native Americans in a spaghetti western. But I never find any darts on their corpses, and no dart-firing ever appears in the combat logs. Maybe it's just a historical oddity of some sort.

Did they have blowgunners in the first place? If they did, then they tend to get into fights with animals. They may had used them up before you arrived.

Ever since I found out you could multigrasp slabs, I've made it my mission in every adventure to find one and do so.  What better way could there be to impart the secrets of life and death to the masses?

Otherwise, I prefer the longsword.  Slashing, stabbing, and bashing in one elegant package!  With about thirty shields in my other hand, I'm unstoppable!

How OP'd is this mighty weapon?

Silver makes for a horrible weapon.

Silver fighting picks are absolutly devestating.

Pierce: Spike
Bash: Hammerhead

No armor can stop a silver fighting pick, at least nothing goblins and humans make.

Hitting the target a few times first usually works. Even if you miss it makes the next hit easier apparently. You do have to be godly in swordselfship first though.

Books. Books. Nigh-on-weightless, available by the truckload at any necrotower, yet made of delightfully-hard substances and capable of being rapid-fired at relativistic speeds to shatter femurs (aided by a small contact area). My current adventurer's MO is machine-gunning things to death at range with an unrelenting barrage of the written word. The only bad part is cleaning them all up after.

Oh, and they make decent bludgeons in a pinch.

Language Arts just got a lot more hardcore.

I used a sword for a bit, but eventually just put the stupid thing away and caved in skulls with a turquoise-bound book about some town I don't care about. Then I found a goshenite-bound book in my bag and so am now dual-wielding literature.

ON THE ONE HAND: I am playing a vampire. ON THE OTHER: All this carnage is with Novice thrower and Dabbling Misc. Object. I think it balances out.

@Xantalos:

Rifles are the best.
"The flying musket ball hits the goblin swordsman in the left upper leg, tearing the muscle and shattering the bone!"
"The goblin swordsman gives in to pain!"
"You stab the goblin swordsman in the head with the bayonette of your rifle, tearing the muscle, fracturing the skull, jamming the skull through the brain and tearin the brain!"
"Goblin swordsman has been struck down!"

The best weapon is a mouth. No sword, whip or handful of liquid can measure up to the glory that is biting a Bogeyman in its head and shake its head off, and then spitting it so hard at the next night creature's head that it too dies.
